    Wow man! Get called out by name AND see my truck and trailer! Awesome.
    So after nearly one year of ownership (December 14 will make one year) and about 18,000 miles I can say so far so good for my truck. I average around 15 mpg driving to work, which is a 30 mile round trip. I have gotten 17 mpg on two different 360ish mile round trips. And I get between 8.4-8.6 towing my trailer (pictured in the video).
    As for performance, I can’t complain. I don’t live in the Rockies by any means but here in East Kentucky and Southwest Virginia (elevations from 1100’-2500’) the best way to explain the roads are they are like a roller coaster lol. There all curves and several grades. The worst one is an 8%. That’s the one where the GM trucks need another gear between 2nd and 3rd. On 6 and 7% grades, it stays in 3rd gear and is able to stay at or above the speed limit (55 or 60 mph depending on where I’m at).
    So nice review. Pretty cool to see my truck and trailer. And again, no complaints from me.

      @@supporterofsanity wow pretty small world after all. I’m pretty close to the KY/VA border. The mountain that serves as the border for KY and VA is the 8% grade I refer to actually. Locally know as Pound Mountain or Jenkins Mountain. It’s easily the toughest grade in this general area on a four lane highway.
      I’m also fairly close to the KY/WV border too.

      Man that’s a thirsty truck.What’s your trailer weight? Flat or in closed?

      @@2hotscottpro 8.5’x24’ enclosed. About 9’ tall. You can actually see it in the video when JB mentions my name. He shows a picture. I think a good safe weight estimate would be about 7500 pounds tops. I’ve never weighed it but when it was new empty according to the sticker it weighed about 4000 pounds. I’ve since completely finished the interior and have cabinets and lots of tools and other stuff in it. The car weighs 2290 I think.
      I had a 2020 Duramax real similar to my current truck and it only got 2 mpg better than my current gasser. From my experience trailer weight don’t matter too much on mpgs. It’s the size and type of trailer.

    I recently bought a 2022 Silverado 2500HD with the 6.6 gas engine. Best truck I’ve ever owned. Previous to this I had a 2013 2500HD with the 6.0 Vortec which was also an excellent truck but I do love having more power/torque and a surprisingly very comfortable ride.. even when not towing. having bought this exact truck 2 weeks ago in black, I wanted to mention it can have navigation built in. mine came stock with the navigation tab, but would imagine it's a download once you activate the onstar. I was hesitant to go with the gas engine but after test driving both, I decided the diesels extra torque would be wasted on me for my needs. I used that saved $10K to buy the At4 HD with sunroof, rear window, wireless charger, and so on. basically the fully loaded version with gas was the same price as the base model with the deisel. so far no regrets. since my camper only weighs 8K pounds it will have all the power I need I think. absolutely love this truck. great review

    I owned an 01 2500 hd with the 8.1L mated to a 5 speed Allison and a 4.10 rear end. I currently own a 22 2500hd 6.6L gas. The 01 felt much stronger than the 22 does. It feels snappy empty, but with any weight behind it it feels soft. In 24 it will get the 10 speed auto, which I guarantee will help tremendousl. I miss that 8.1L torque, but not it's appetite.

      Stuart, had the same. 01 8.1 2500HD. now sporting 2020 f350 7.3 tremor with the 4.30 rear end. Almost 20 years of new tech and the new engines have similar HP and torque. A little better MPG towing with the 7.3. Night and day difference daily driving. Don't miss 8.1 appetite, but will say it treated me well for just under a decade.

    • @2015_Rubicnn

      @stuartmeier240 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2015_Rubicnn yes, agreed, but the rated torque numbers are not far off, with the 6.6 being rated 60hp higher. The 8.1 pulled hard from idle to redline, 6.6 goes to sleep by 4000 rpms. I think the 10 speed trans will help in 24, but I also think Ford has the right idea with big cubic inches. The fuel economy is just as good.

    • @2015_Rubicnn
      @2015_Rubicnn ปีที่แล้ว

      @Stuart Meier The 496 was obviously tuned etc for longevity and has 20 year technology deficiency compared to the 6.6L. Either way it's where the numbers are placed in the RPM band and not necessarily the peak. That 496 makes a lot of torque just about 1k RPM up to about 3200. Not sure about the 6.6...but I'm sure it will do fine with the 10 speed. Just image that 496 with today's technology and a 10 speed.

    • @stuartmeier240
      @stuartmeier240 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2015_Rubicnn totally, I really didn't understand why they dropped that option. I assume the lack luster of the 6.0 pushed sales of the diesel which must make them the most money. I would love to see a big block reintroduced. A return of the "454" would sell thousands of trucks just for novelty, and with today's tech would be a viable option. I am also curious to see how Chrysler does with a turbo straight six. That could be a real industry impact for pickups if done right, but I would think it will need to be north of 5.0L displacement to fulfill HD demands.

Pulls it with no issues. My last trip through Arkansas I averaged 12mpg. 31k on it now. Thinking about trading for the 10 speed when it hits the market. my only complaints about the truck is the old tranny and 3.73 gear. Would rather have the 10 speed with 3.73. One issue I have with this engine is its direct injection only. The valves will coke up with carbon over 50-100K miles. It’s a common occurrence on other GM LT engines. Won’t necessarily be an issue but long term 150-200K+ miles burning cheap 87 octane will definitely lead to intake valve deposits. I wish GM offered 4.10 gears as an option. The 10 speed will help in 2024 no doubt. I’ll be cross shopping the 2500 ZR2/AT4X 6.6 gasser against the 7.3 Tremor (port fuel injection; 4.30 gears) when I upgrade in a year or two. Another issue I’ve read on the forums is this 6.6 gas has a reputation for drinking some oil. Not a huge issue, but I’ve read enough forum complaints about it to mention it.

      Carbon build-up has nothing to do with the octane rating of the fuel. Typically, you want Top-Tier certified fuel like Exxon, Chevron, Citgo, She’ll, BP, etc. They have better additive packages. But in a DI engine, they only help keep the injectors a little cleaner. The intake valves are fucked no matter what fuel is used because it doesn’t get sprayed across the back of the intake valves.

      Thermal Activity (heat) is the death of engines, transmissions, tires, etc. The flushing service on transmissions is the way to go...but only if the first service is performed at 30,000 or 40,000 miles...well in advance of manufacturer's recommendations. The "drain and fill" method does not remove dirty ATF from the torque converter. There are other competitors for some of these services now.....Wynn's; Valvoline, etc.
      All of the new 10 speed transmissions are way more complex than the prior 6 speeds...and the "piece of junk" GM 8 speed - 8L90 transmission. The 10 speed transmissions built for Class 2 (F250 / 2500) and Class 3 (F350 / 3500) trucks was accomplished via "joint venture" between Ford and GM, with Ford engineers leading the project. The result was the Ford - 10R140 and the GM - 10L1000. Both transmissions had problems early on (no surprise there). Newsflash: The 10L1000 is not an 'Allison' transmission. The 10R140 and 10L1000 share most of the same internal components and parts.

    Nice to see a full set of analog gauges, instead of the digital alternative. And a key? It's like an actual truck, almost. Looking at a 3500HD. May hold off until next year for the 10 speed. Looked at a Ford 350. Not paying an extra $5,000 just because a dealer thinks that they can ask that. Not with Ford's current (lack of) reliability issues. A couple dealers have sneered at a custom order, saying you get what they can get. But they seem to be ordering some with some bells and whistles. Just not the ones I want. Happy to see the 6.6 doesn't have the fuel management system. It was bad 40 years ago, and it's still bad today, apparently. GM needs to learn from its disasters. Ford too, for that matter.

      Best way to avoid any problems with direct injection is installing a catch can. After 2500 miles there was less then an ounce in mine. First gear in them is much deeper even with a higher rear end. For example, an 01 with 4.10 with the 4l80e will have a 1st gear of 2.48x4.10 for a total of roughly 10:1, where this truck has 4.06 x 3.73 for a total reduction of roughly 15:1. So it's geared 50% steeper with an extra 100 ft-lbs at the engine.
      Total 1st gear torque of the 01 is roughly 3600ft-lbs at the hub, this one will be roughly 7000 ft-lbs at the hub.

      The 6L90 ratios are 4.02:1, 2.36:1, 1.53:1, 1.15:1, 0.85:1 and 0.67:1.
      Your Allison with the 8.1 has a 12.66:1 final drive in 1st gear. A new 6.6 gas with the 6L90 and 3.73 has a 15.03:1 final drive. A good amount shorter. 2nd gear you have a 7.38:1 compared to 8.80:1. 3rd is 5.74:1 compared to 5.70:1. 4th gear you are direct drive so 4.10 compared to 4.29:1. The rest are OD gears. The 6.6 has great output numbers but it's direct injection coking prone design is not at all a long term reliable design like Fords 7.3 port injection motor. Ford finally went in the right direction and as a Chevy fan I wish gm would build their HD truck with a 8.8 liter big block design option like they sold PSI industrial motor company.

    All you guys bitching about the 6 speed, enjoy the $10k it costs when your transmissions go up in smoke. The 6L90E is a much better fleet transmission and is proven to go 250k or more with hard use if it’s maintained properly.

  • @JohnDiMartino

    This truck is GDI,the Fords and Rams use port injection only which is better for reliability and simplicity especially with the idling these trucks often do in fleet and contractor service . For 2023 the GM is the weakest base engine offering,Being topped by both Fords 6.8 and 7.3l port injection ,and Chryslers 6.4L 415 hp Hemi. The GMs do have stout running gear for sure, the 6 speed automatic is reliable and proven. The lack of a 4.10 ratio is an issue especially only having a 6 speed automatic and tall tires. This truck is a 1 ton with 2500 decals so no sense comparing it to the true 3/4 tons sold by ford and Ram. The best 3/4 ton truck for towing 5 th wheel is the f250 7.3L w 4.30 gearing.Night and day better than the GM 2500 1 ton.

    The integrity and weight GM compromises by not putting a real axle up front gives the left over GVWR to the rear. Its that simple.

      According to dyno charts it absolutely has the grunt. They have very similar torque curves.
      But that’s just numbers on paper. Regardless Ford charges a pretty significant amount extra to just get the 7.3. That’s a typical Ford move. And also Ford hasn’t built an OHV engine in over 20 years (until the 7.3 of course). That means something.
      So while I think Ford has went in the right direction to finally ditch the junk OHC “modular” motors they have pushed for the past 24 or 25 years, let’s not get carried away with the 7.3. And also it’s my belief that it will be rendered pointless next year when they offer the 6.8 with pretty similar power output for no up charge.

    No it's still a gutless gas motor and a heavy duty truck 400 horse and 460 torque is below their half ton lineup this is a larger engine it should do at least what the 62 does if not at least 30% better.
    I don't care how you slice it it's a turd same goes for the 73 and the Ford or the six four in the Dodge with the technology we have nowadays there's no reason why these things should be that low especially in a truck that's more than capable of handling a heavy duty load
