The 6.6L Gas Silverado is a great truck with a reliable powertrain. The new interior and new 10 speed really helped bring out the potential with this generation. My only complaint is fuel economy (which is terrible in all HD trucks) and price. The prices of these GM gassers are less competitive than similar Fords even when both are well used.
I have a 24 ZR2 with the 6.6 gas. Truck drives great and the transmission shifts very smooth. Acceleration feels great down low and around town. It does feel a little flat up top though. Basically feels like most of it's power is in the 1st 1/3 of the peddle. Putting it to the floor doesn't give you much more acceleration. Good overall, if they could give it more pepp up top, it would be perfect.
Different trans, but I have a 2022 GMC 6.6 gas 4x4. does not use any oil, no issues of any sort. Have had a catch can on it from new, usually 2 tablespoons of oil every 2k miles. My lifetime average with 22k miles is 14.6, mpg with lots of cold weather and 4x4 use. On longer trips with cruise, unladen, I get close to 18.
I had the same truck. It was a lemon from jump. 4 attempts to seal my rear window that leaked. I then came to find out it was a flaw in the body itself. They didn't believe me about the terrible hard shifting, and down shifting until they pulled the trans. pan to find metal fragments from the torque converter. Long story short, it got rebuilt at 12,000 miles then, started doing the same thing. Lost my ass getting rid of it with interest rates that went up.
I have 3 10 speeds in my fleet, one f150, one t350 and one f350 all 2021+ or newer. And I will tell you when you mentioned the skip shifting I realized what I was experiencing. It’s not a bad shift but more an awkward shift usually in traffic between 4-6. Other than that no complaints I love the 10 speed especially in the super duty. What a difference.
I have a 23 F350 with the 7.3. I have a buddy that has the 6.6 gas with the 6 speed. That isnt a very good match for that engine at all. Good to see the 10 speed helps out.
I have a 2022 F350 Tremor with 7.3 gas. The skip shift can be annoying because it can bog down between those big shifts, so I drive around town in tow haul mode which makes it run thru all the gears. Much smoother too. The transmission really runs smooth with a load behind it.
The GM/ ford 10 sp is used in the LD trucks and cars. Believe this is a whole different animal. GM calls their version the 10L100, This one is called 10L1000 and is PTO capable.
Any automatic transmission with many gears is a high wear unit, more moving parts equals premature wear. I would prefer a manual 6 speed transmission. I currently own a 2011 hd3500 with a 6.0 gas and a 6l90 transmission, got 150,000 miles on the original transmission, i replaced it with a custom unti from ATI. Best thing i ever did. Chevy needs a manual transmission for sure.
Nice video. I’ve been looking forward to this and especially the towing video. I think you will be able to disprove the common narrative that still shows up from other comments I’ve read, and that’s about the “lack of power” of the 6.6. It’s just false. As for the 10 speed, fuel economy won’t be any better. I actually think it could be slightly worse. But regardless, 8th and 9th gear is the same ratio as 5th and 6th was, and then 10th is just slightly taller OD gear. The real benefit to the 10 speed will be towing on grades and then like passing power 40-70 mph stuff. 0-60 will almost certainly be slower because the 6 speed trucks hit 60 mph in 2nd gear and the 10 speed trucks have to shift to 3rd. Shifting takes time so don’t be surprised if you find out the 0-60 is slightly slower. The lack of power comments are just laughable. Anyone that says that has very clearly never drove one of the trucks.
I’ve got a 2024 2500 gas. The biggest issue i’m having is a strange grinding noise in gears 5-6. I’ve taken it to the dealer several times, and they said GM is aware of the issue, but there’s no solution at this point. I’ve towed over 10k lbs often and it does great.
Hey I believe shifting is better with the Chevy/Gmc . My friend just had his Ford 10 speed replaced. The dealer kept doing computer updates but it wasn’t working. I would definitely go with the GMC

Great job on the videos, excellent reviews. I’m between the chev 6.6 gas and the ford 7.3 - towing a 9000lbs travel trailer, if both were priced the same what would you suggest? Cheers, Dave from Newfoundland! Can’t wait for the next video on this one!
Can't wait to see how it tows! I'm still on the fence on the 6.6 and 7.3 but this vid and the new interior ( finally ) is leaning me toward GM. We'll see what the tow vid shows. I'll check back then and thanks for the vid! 👍
Great video I wish the hood scoop was functional for adding like an aftermarket cold air intake for good airflow. Also in 2024. Why can we not get standard LED headlights? Also, I wish they would make a plug-in play tuner for the gas burners like a super chip tuner.
Thank you sir! It would be nice because in the Duramax hood scoops are functional so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to make the gas engines also functional.
@@TheGettyAdventures I have a super chip tuner for my 2005 gas burner GMC Sierra that makes a world of difference not as much as it would a diesel but a good updated tuner for the 2024 would be great and add more horsepower and torque
About time it got the 10 spd! Main reason, is they ditched the 4.10 gears around 2019, the 6.6 might good but i wasnt get rid of the best gear ratio good. 10 spd should evened that problem out
I had originally thought that as well but turns out all the 10 speed originated from that project. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford%E2%80%93GM_10-speed_automatic_transmission

Good video, I am curious how the truck, as a whole, stacks up against the F-250 7.3 and Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi. The transmission and some minor tweaks to an engine can make a major difference. Looking forward to the next one!
having towed with all 3, I would say the 7.3L is the best excepecially with the options of 4.30 gears. the 6.4L hemi is nice with the 4.10 gears and will get the job done. the 6.6L with the 6 speed was certainly at the tail end. Granted with the 10 speed maybe that will change!
I have a 2024 with the 10 speed. I’m having a very hard shift from 7th to 8th gear. I have just over 12,000 miles on it. I’m hoping they can do a relearn on the TCM when I bring it in to the dealership. All other shifts are smooth. You can’t even tell when it shifts except 7th to 8th. 😢
@@ffarmchicken personally I think they’re the same. What he’s referring to is probably true too but only for a different calibration. I’m sure they have the gas ones calibrated differently for the loss in torque from the diesel.
@thegettyadventures I picked up a 2021 with 60k km. Do you think I should install a catch can? So far I like the truck, decent hwy mileage for what it is (12.3L/100km at 100) Stop and go it gets worse of course. Looking forward to trying it out towing my RV this summer.
I would like to point out to potential consumers that an important portion of this video feels misleading. I recently purchased a 2024 2500HD with the L8T (6.6 gas) and the transmission is definitely NOT the GM/Ford codeveloped lighter duty 10L80 that is put in the 1500 trucks. The transmission is most definitely the GM/Allison codeveloped 10L1000 that comes behind the Duramax in the HD trucks since 2020. Of course it needs a different torque converter, shift points, etc to work with the gas engine(hence the different part number), however, it is essentially the same HD trans that weighs ~360 lbs vs the lighter duty 10L80 that weighs about 230 lbs. I say this with confidence, I crawled under my truck before I bought it, and examined the trans itself and transmission pan shape and bolt pattern to be sure. It is correct that Allison doesn't build it, GM does, they just worked together during the design and testing, but that has been the case for DMax HD transmissions since 2020 as well.
I think because of the common confusion Wikipedia has been edited to be incorrect on this one by including the 10L1000 on that list. There is a video of a GM Chief Engineering talking about the 10L1000 where he specifically states it was not developed with Ford like the smaller 10L80, and that it was developed and then tested in collaboration with Allison to their standards. I will attach to links in a reply below since my last reply with the links got deleted.
It won't let me add the video, its called "Allison 10-speed transmission in 2020 Silverado HD" by Hard Working Trucks, its the engineer speaking about the 10L1000 transmission. You can also find more specific info by searching "dieselhub 10L1000" on the web.
@@folkenheath Thats what ive been told as well. The 10L80 is lighter and not the same as the 10L1000. If its the same, no way it'll be capable of towing that much
Hopefully it locks out 1st gear when not towing. I actually paid blackbear performance to do this for me with a 6 speed auto, it was brutal with 4.10's how short 1st was
I know it does that on the duramax. Like the video is all about though... It's not exactly the same transmission. It really does make it much better to drive when starting in second when not towing with the duramax.
I’m getting 14l per 100 best and 15l average on my brand new 6.6 gas with the 10 speed and I only have 750km on the tuck so it will improve when broken in
I didn't think any GM pickup badged Allison transmissions were Allison built. GM sold their interest in Allison in 2008 when they were cash starved before bankruptcy.
could be, I believed the allison 1000 units that were in the earlier duramax trucks were legit allison transmissions. those same units were in schools buses and all kinds of medium duty applications.
Would you please go back a previous about you 1500 you had and the valve cover oil leak I wrote a question on there I’d love to get an answer from you!
I feel like most of these heavy duty gas engines are planned to fail with 6.6 direct injection and both 6.4 and 7.3 having crappy oil pumps. Also the 6.4 has MDS for some unknown reason.
That’s to be expected. Built in obsolescence has been a thing with the big three auto manufacturers for decades. Now they design them to be recycled too.
I'm not very well versed in automatic transmissions. we just don't see very many on the HD diesel side of things. But these boys wrote up a nice piece about issues on the 10L1000 nextgendiesel.com/blogs/transmissions-101/transmissions-101-allison-10l1000-problems-solutions-upgrades?_pos=2&_sid=5d125d919&_ss=r
i drive ford expedition eco boost 3.5 with 10 speed the skipping is really bad and it hunts for gears every time i change the drive mode to "towing" so it does not skip gears and that turns out to be smoother like butter
Make some sense. I've heard a couple people talk about the ford 10 speeds being a little frantic. The super duties and the f150's or for your case the expedition do use different units.
@@TheGettyAdventures I drive a 24 GMC 2500 duramax first GM vehicle ever always run Ford and so far I love it. Only had it a few months so time will tell if I made a mistake leaving Ford or not.
The direct injection would be a no go for me. My works trucks have to idle every day for hours. I would be afraid this would be a problem with this engine.
I mean that much idling isn't great for any engine but yes possibly the direction injection would cause more issues then a traditional port injection set up.
Anyone else have the engine lock up or have metal in the oil pan after hearing a slight ticking noise? just had the engine, radiator and AC compressor replaced on our 10 month old truck. Trans issues but "unable to duplicate" so far with dealer.
Does any Pickup Truck Company make a Manual 8 to 10 speed transmission. They have been needed since pickup trucks began towing Gooseneck trailers for work. It probably started in the late 50s or early 60s.
I just can’t get over the new design. It’s a truck and it should look tried and true, not gimmicky like a Tesla. I think Ram and Ford have the styling hands down.
None of the 6.6 have cylinder deactivation in either 3/4 or 1 ton in any year. GM will not due that in their heavy duty trucks and that’s a great thing.
I love the 10 speed on my 2024 L5P. Only weird thing is every time I underbody was my truck the check engine light comes on and then goes away. The duramax is great but unfortunately I had to have my EGR replaced at 9k miles and my tow mirrors replaced. Kinda leaning towards a Toyota tundra with the v6.
You driving a truck that weighs like 8,000lbs 96mph? Lots of energy to put into a wreck, not to mention no shot the speed code on your tires support 90+mph
I can echo the previous comment with my 2024 GMC 3500 6.6l gas with the ten speed being a very capable combo and a real joy to tow with. No oil consumption for me either. Now at 6500kms.

Ya when I drove the 6.6L with the 6 speed it was a little underwhelming lol
I'm really hoping the manual will make a comeback... but I highly doubt it.
Unfortunately it’ll never happen. The demand is too low for them to ever consider it.

Either will get the job done.
Can't wait to see how it tows! I'm still on the fence on the 6.6 and 7.3 but this vid and the new interior ( finally ) is leaning me toward GM. We'll see what the tow vid shows. I'll check back then and thanks for the vid! 👍
the interior is a REALLY nice addition. and this truck is only a LT trim but it comes standard. I'm pretty pumped to see the difference towing.
we have 2 chevy 3500 10 speed and 1 ford 7.3 4.30 gears you cant compare the two -7.3 ford all the way chevys front rides a little better

Make available a 7 speed manual with a really low creep gear and a heavy duty clutch. Then take my money!
Those days are gone. The majority of drivers these days are not mechanical inclined and want all the creature comforts.
I would love a manual on my 6.6
No one knows how to drive a manual anymore
@@garybradley5143 really sad!
About time it got the 10 spd! Main reason, is they ditched the 4.10 gears around 2019, the 6.6 might good but i wasnt get rid of the best gear ratio good. 10 spd should evened that problem out
My 2014 Allison transmission is still working perfectly, let’s see how long the GM Allison lasts.
How about doing some comparisons between Ford, Chevy and Dodge comparing how their frames, suspensions and other systems are built?
I believe they codeveloped the light duty 10 speed, but not the heavy duty platform 10 speed.
I had originally thought that as well but turns out all the 10 speed originated from that project.

I trust your word
I am still undecided
Good video, I am curious how the truck, as a whole, stacks up against the F-250 7.3 and Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi. The transmission and some minor tweaks to an engine can make a major difference. Looking forward to the next one!
having towed with all 3, I would say the 7.3L is the best excepecially with the options of 4.30 gears. the 6.4L hemi is nice with the 4.10 gears and will get the job done. the 6.6L with the 6 speed was certainly at the tail end. Granted with the 10 speed maybe that will change!
Excited to see how she tows
My 2023 Ford 10 speed with the 7.3 does not skip gears.
I honestly really wanted to like the new Chevy HDs but man those seats are absolute murder.
interesting, I'd definitely have the dealership take a look at that.

You’re the only person that said the transmission is not the same as the diesel.
I noticed that too. Even at dealerships they don’t mention there are two different part numbers. 😮
It is correct that Allison doesn't build it, GM does, they just worked together during the design and testing, but that has been the case for DMax HD transmissions since 2020 as well.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford%E2%80%93GM_10-speed_automatic_transmission

But is it a workhorse?? 🤔
I've put 70k on mine in 2 years. It's also married to a gooseneck 24/7
I thought the fuel mileage was bad in my 2023 Ram 2500 Power Wagon, but this new 6.6 is a heavy drinker... I get 13.2 MPG with my Ram.
I have one has been great only gripe has been the dealer wants $700 to change the tranny fluid

Would you please go back a previous about you 1500 you had and the valve cover oil leak I wrote a question on there I’d love to get an answer from you!
Wonder if the gas spec trans would hold up to a supercharger? But then you're bringing the cost up to diesel territory....
please get your facts straight ford and gm did not partner on this transmission only on the light duty 10 speed in the half tons

I love the 10 speed on my 2024 L5P. Only weird thing is every time I underbody was my truck the check engine light comes on and then goes away. How dd you get yours past 96MPH? I have the GMC Denali 2500HD and it won't go past 96
He was driving in kilometres. These trucks are governed so you don’t tow 20k pounds at 200 mph.
You driving a truck that weighs like 8,000lbs 96mph? Lots of energy to put into a wreck, not to mention no shot the speed code on your tires support 90+mph
In the States, there is a speed limiter of 98 mph on the 2500HD.
In canada the limiter is set to 160 kmh
Great engine and truck
I can echo the previous comment with my 2024 GMC 3500 6.6l gas with the ten speed being a very capable combo and a real joy to tow with. No oil consumption for me either. Now at 6500kms.

They sold it in 2007
@taylorsvilletony773 didn't know that, what kills me when people ask if gm got Allison's stamp of approval when in all reality gm is allison or was for years!
The simple truth is if you tow a lot, diesel makes a lot of sense. If you tow in the summer a half dozen times a year, don’t be stupid and save the money. You might get your macho bragging rights, but you won’t win any smart awards.
No funswick!
Gm paid to use the ally name. Also known as a " sell out ".

For gas HD trucks, the Ram 6.4 Hemi . With the 8sdp ZF trans and 4:10 gears. Is the best all-around gasser. Just my 2 cents.
ITS NOT AN ALLISON!!!! ITS GM
This V8 is a basic motor no shutting down cylinders at highway speeds to save fuel ??
So GM can't engineer a transmission (Allison), or their own diesel (Duramax aka Isuzu)...interesting.
