Made these today. Thank you SO much for this recipe! I enjoyed them much more than store bought as there was not as much syrup inside which usually puts me off. Will make again and again!
Hi there, thank you soo much for this recipe. Am no baker but I tried this recipe last night after watching it months ago. What a hit! Absolutely amazing, better than shop bought.
Heys, unfortunately not... The creaminess of the yogurt will help keep it moist & the acidity helps activate the baking powder, which will make it fluffy and light. This is a no yeast koeksister and you will unfortunately need the yogurt for this recipe
Hey there! These are super delicious! I made these today and they came out super tasty! Just one question... a few of them exploded in the pot of oil which created a rather chaotic and messy situation!! I'm wondering if you know why this may have happened?? Otherwise, they were delicious!
@@eatmeerecipes thank you for your reply 😊 perhaps it was the oil.. I'm determined to try it again though. Just one more question, do you have the oil turned up high or at a moderate heat? Thank you again 😊
Shaam Seven it will come out extremely soft and fluffy if you follow the recipe, I have a video up on TikTok as well for these no yeast koeksisters vm.tiktok.com/3pX6co/ use yoghurt instead of maas (sourmilk) the full recipe with quantities is up on eatmeerecipes.co.za
Clara Charlottes sorry for the hassle you had to go through and for my delayed response. Will check what seems to be the issue with them not opening. Sincere apologies. Hope you enjoy 🌺
These are a different variation. Real South African Koeksisters don't have coconut on them, and would add ginger and cinnamon to the syrup while boiling. Add the koeksisters into really cold syrup immediately out of the oil, that way they soak up way more syrup. I don't want to sound critical, just some advice. I grew up eating these and my grandmother's are the best(That may be subjective but oh well lol).
Macaela Morrison those are the cape Malay koeksisters that you’re talking about 🙂 because I’m from Durban and grew up in the Indian community, this is how we made them. The coconut is always optional. Also this was a quick version without the whole yeast process.
Thank you for sharing ❤ the recipe. Not too sweet and sprinkling of coconut is fantastic. Thanks again. Will definitely try this

Can u replace the yogurt for more milk?
Heys, unfortunately not...
The creaminess of the yogurt will help keep it moist & the acidity helps activate the baking powder, which will make it fluffy and light.
This is a no yeast koeksister and you will unfortunately need the yogurt for this recipe

Molly Connolly heys, glad you enjoyed them. Oh my 😧I have never had that happen to me. Maybe your oil was too hot?
@@eatmeerecipes thank you for your reply 😊 perhaps it was the oil.. I'm determined to try it again though. Just one more question, do you have the oil turned up high or at a moderate heat? Thank you again 😊
Molly Connolly I always have it at medium heat, not on high because that can also burn the koeksisters
@@eatmeerecipes okay I definitely had the oil up too high then 😂 haha thanks so much Denisiya! I appreciate you getting back to me 😊 x
I’m fairly sure that is actually margarine?
Dennniiiiii 😁❤️
How do I make em extra soft and fluffy
Shaam Seven it will come out extremely soft and fluffy if you follow the recipe, I have a video up on TikTok as well for these no yeast koeksisters vm.tiktok.com/3pX6co/ use yoghurt instead of maas (sourmilk) the full recipe with quantities is up on eatmeerecipes.co.za

@@eatmeerecipes Oh ok. I assumed it was something like that lol The more you know!
And in Durban we do not like extra syrup 🤢
Please can you send me your Grandmother recipe.
