Banjo Tooie Deserves Better

Yep, I said it. And I'm not just saying that to be cool!
Banjo Tooie has to be one of the most underrated games of all time. From its massive levels to its lovable characters and music, Banjo Tooie is an ambitious game that simply doesn't get the credit it deserves. In this video, I examine both the good and bad and explain why I believe the sequel to one of the greatest 3D platformers of all time deserves to be spoken of in the same light.

Well put, both Kazooie and Tooie are awesome. And I think both games, plus Donkey Kong 64, have fallen victim to hype backlash. Those three games when I was growing up were regarded as instant classics, you rarely heard anyone talk bad about either of them, but sometime around 2020, people suddenly started deciding they didn't like these games. It might be bias because I grew up with them that I like them so much, but I think at some point someone just made a video about Donkey Kong 64 bashing it and then suddenly everyone hated it, and extended that to Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. Strangely enough, I almost never hear people trash BK or BT in real life, it's mostly just online.

lol tbh Grunty Industries was my fav level. Maybe it was due to its complexity.

My two favorite levels in the series are Grunty Industries and Rusty Bucket Bay lol. I dig the challenge and complexity, as well as the grimy, industrial atmosphere.

Agreed. The game is incredibly ambitious, and feels an improvement to Kazooie, as a sequel that improves and expands the story, universe, lore, gameplay, etc etc. Just everything a perfect sequel *should* do. Great video!

Well put. I truly believe Kazooie and Tooie are a perfect duology. Kazooie is a 10/10, but leaves me wanting more. By the time I finish Tooie I'm satisfied, and, frankly, ready to move on to something else hahaha.
Controversial opinion: we never needed a Threeie. 🤫 as is, the duology is fully realized.

I think Banjo Tooie was just slightly ahead of it's time. If they had given it a few more years (but not too many years because eventually 3D platformers kinda died lol), I think a lot of the more janky sections could have been pulled off successfully.

In my first revisit of the Banjo games in about 2008/09, I decided I liked BT more than BK. I'm aware of its flaws but I think it's great. My judgement was clouded when it came out in 2000 because of "collectathon fatigue."

I had some fun in this game (only in the jolly roger lagoon) but some things i think are done worse are
- Usually when there is a spot that you have to backtrack theres no way of knowing, because it just wastes time.
- in Banjo kazooie you would earn jiggies as you play the levels, but in banjo tooie after an hour of playing you can finally go and earn all the jiggies at around the same time.
- The bosses are awesome, but why are all of them easy besides the final one.
- while this game is more of a puzzel game than a platformer, the platforming isnt very good.
- the puzzels are probably worse than the first games ngl, as most of them you dont have to think for. You usually just got to find a random mechanic that does the same thing as the old mechanics, and then you proceed to use it onces.
- Banjo kazooies levels were usually a big opwn loop full of a lot of things, but banjo tooies were usually long empty paths, and it made it way more confusing for me.
Other than those things this game also had some great additions, like better movement, way way better swimming, and more in depth story. 🐸 I just typed like a redditor... 😅
