The Banjo community needs more vocal fans like you to help push for a series revival. But saying "You don't have to 100% Tooie" is not a valid defense to legitimate criticisms of the game's level design.

Thanks I really appreciate that! We need a series revival for sure!
After replaying and analyzing the whole game I didn’t find a lot of the “issues” people complain about. Like Terrydactyland. If people don’t like to collect things and complain that’s who I am referring too. Not necessarily people who think certain collectibles need to be altered or condensed because of inherent bad design. (Like colored bananas in DK64 for example).
I believe Tooie holds up pretty well.
If you want my complete thoughts on every element I’d recommend checking out my Analyzing Tooie complete edition video. :)

@@jiggylookbackIt’s kind of funny; in my opinion, the colored bananas from DK64 are a lot of fun as a collectible, similar to the notes from Banjo-Kazooie. They show up in places you’re already going to and encourage you to explore new areas of the level while leading you to Golden Bananas, as well as helping you keep track of places you haven’t explored yet. The actual issue with them is that the tag barrel requires you to backtrack a huge amount over the course of the game to get them. If the game gave us the ability to swap Kongs at will, I’d be surprised if most of the criticisms of DK64 would hold up (full disclosure, it’s my favorite of the Rare platformers).
Kazooie was essentially a miniature version of DK64 without a tag barrel, and it definitely works. I personally prefer the sprawling levels in DK64 and Tooie, but the notes are a great collectible, and they serve a triple purpose as a progression-facilitator, a more minor objective to collect while you’re traversing a level, and a completionist’s endgame reward.
Tooie greatly decreases the amount of collectible notes by more than one fifth while more than doubling the size of its worlds, which not only makes the wide open levels emptier with both more space and fewer things to collect in that space, but it also doesn’t show natural paths to jiggy puzzles and objectives or mark your progress in a level as the notes of Kazooie and the colored bananas of DK64 did. There’s a fair amount of distance to cover between things you can interact with when you first enter a level in Tooie, and most of what you can do between those things is defeat enemies (that gain you nothing and respawn anyway) and collect consumables that you are usually already at capacity for.
In the clip at 7:24 where you argue against Terrydactyland being or feeling empty, while you’re flying around the level, I can see the following things: The water basin for the thirsty Dino, Mumbo’s hut, an egg to hatch, a pool and waterfall (maybe an underwater rock to break or a cave behind the waterfall; it’s been like six years since I last played it), and an alcove in the rock wall. There’s not a single note or permanent collectible to be seen or picked up (maybe you already got the one or two notes that would have been there, but I can’t remember their placements in this world), and most of that stuff that I mentioned seeing is actually inaccessible when you enter the level. You can’t hatch the egg until you get enough notes AND find the correct Jamjars move tutor, you can’t do anything about the thirsty dinosaur until a world or two later when you activate something that you didn’t know would actually provide water for it, Mumbo’s hut is largely useless to approach unless you already know where you need to take Mumbo (Mumbo can fulfill a single objective and is extremely limiting to walk around as), the cave behind the waterfall leads to a grouping of other things that you may or may not be able to complete, and I can’t remember what was in the alcove.
Now imagine being on foot as both Banjo and Kazooie and traversing the same area that you flew over. The space between things feels larger at ground level, you move more slowly than you do while flying, you continually reach objectives that can’t be interacted with, and there’s very little to nothing that you’re collecting in the process. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely stuff to do in each level, but with the level size massively increasing, the amount of Jiggies staying the same, and the amount of notes massively decreasing compared to B-K, Tooie finds itself with far more open and uninteractible (“empty”) space compared to both B-K and DK64, the latter of which has 25 main collectibles as well as 500 colored bananas, two fairies, a battle crown, and many colored coins in each level.

@@iliya1933 however about Terrydactyland you’re also accounting the big space for transformations which this is one of the unique levels we get 2 transformations! As well as several caves filled with unique characters. It doesn’t necessarily have to have as many collectibles. The game gives you plenty of ways to traverse faster like flying or splitting up and hauling butt with Kazooie. Not too mention the smaller transformation interacts with the enemy Dino’s in a unique way and you can have conversations with them.
It did have things to collect but I for sure grabbed them lol.
Tooie does offer a cheato cheat for speeding up banjo which also helps. Tho you need to unlock it. You’re right it doesn’t have as many collectibles and that’s tooie as a whole. I think that would offer more to do but I love the worlds personally!
Terrydactyland I’m not saying is an A tier level but it’s not that empty and boring like people said. It’s got a dope theme, dope music, lots of little things to find. It’s just large which in my book doesn’t equate to bad. Now if it had no redeeming qualities I wouldn’t defend it but I think it does.
I’m also a big DK64 fan if you haven’t seen my other videos. I agree switching at anytime is nice and there is a mod for it which is awesome! You should watch my defending dk64 video I cover a looottt of stuff.
Same with my defending Tooie video :)

@@jiggylookback Oh yeah, I’m not saying that Terrydactyland has nothing in it or few redeeming qualities. It’s actually one of my favorite worlds in Tooie (I also prefer playing Tooie to Kazooie because of the larger scope), but I also think the criticism of it feeling empty when just playing normally is as valid (and true within the context of Tooie) as it gets. Talking to the dinos in the little transformation is great, but that’s a niche situation in which you’re transformed for a very specific goal (and you can’t interact with any other objectives while transformed). I’m not saying that’s a problem, but it doesn’t counteract the “emptiness” claim when most of your time traversing the level is spent as the bear and bird combo. Same with separating the duo. You can’t drill, you can’t ledge hang (though Kazooie’s movement options often counteract the need for this), and you usually need or want to be playing as the pair to easily access most things.
That means that, while there is a variety of traversal options, most of them only happen when you find a specific use for them, and you’re still just running around on the ground, covering a wide open space as B-K as I described in my last comment. I’m not saying you’re wrong in your opinion or that Terrydactyland is poorly designed or anything, but the practical experience of the level for a lot of people (considering the amount of Tooie and Terrydactyland detractors) is what I described, wider areas with spread out things to interact with and fewer meaningful collectibles between them.

  • @Redhollow
    @Redhollow ปีที่แล้ว +2

I've never understood the backtracking argument-Tooie has such a loose jiggy requirement to beat the game. I remember calculating it and realizing only about 1 jiggy per level actually requires backtracking. If you were to skip every jiggy that makes you go back and just go straight for Grunty once you hit 75, you would still have enough wiggle room to skip MORE challenges (like the Canarie Mary challenges lol). Casual players basically have it far easier with this game than it does with Kazooie. As a completionist tho I actively go out of my way to do thes challenges, so I do understand it somewhat. But the worlds are connected in a way that you wouldn't even need to return to the hub to get to where you want to go and that's awesome tbh. More often than not the backtracking is pretty streamlined in a way that you could either do things quickly or get back on track later. Like, for the cavemen mission where you need to go to WW to get them food, that takes less than a 3 minutes. However say you didn't have the right powerup to climb the wall back to TT, that's ok. You can take the train back to TT and continue from where you left off. Or go to another world through similar shortcuts to continue a different level.
As a kid the inter connected world designs and sense of big exploration was the main appeal. I would frequently reload old save files and just go to worlds to enjoy the atmosphere. I get that there's not much to do in some places or it's just too spacious, but that didn't matter at all to me as a kid. I just enjoyed spending time with Banjo and Kazooie tbh. Not to mention all the QoL improvements which enable things like actual satisfying speedrunning (imo)? Sorry but Tooie just beats Kazooie for me on so many levels.

I could understand why bk fans didn’t enjoy bt so much. Bk nailed the collecthathon formula, with fun open levels that got more challenging as you go. You could 100 percent every level 1st try besides freezeezy. Bt completely changes that and it feels like you’re playing a different game, so I can understand the disconnect. Bk went from a 3D collecthathon to 3D open world adventure collecthathon in bt.. I still think both games are great for what they do

  • @izzyj.1079

The thing with the levels being empty that you have to consider is that the worlds are bigger, Banjo and Kazooie move at the same speed as before, and the kicker is everything is bundled in nests.
In Kazooie there would be 100 notes to a level, and each note was just...a note. In Tooie, while each level still has 100 technically, notes are collected in nests of five at a time; plus the treble clefts worth 20. That adds up to only 17 actual collectables. Or consider how Glowbos replace Mumbo Tokens. In Tooie, each level has two Glowbos, one for Mumbo and Wumba respectively. Compare this to the five Mumbo Tokens in every level just for Mumbo.
The levels are big enough to require warp pads, but the but the collectables are all nested up so there's considerably less than them. I think it's pretty easy to see why someone would say the levels feel empty in this case, and I flatly disagree with that section.

Fair enough. Glitter Gulch to me feels the most empty of all the worlds in Tooie. I think my comments are more geared toward Terrydactyland specifically.

for me, backtracking is really satisfying and adds so much life into every world, giving you the feeling like they are all connected together. I think the reason people are getting mad is because of all the walking you have to do to enter previous worlds but still, since you got the train and all the other entrances to the worlds it becomes very easy and for me, super satisfying. Tooie just feels like a more mature and balanced game, just and improved overall version of the original. The only small things I miss are the eyes on each item you collect and the noises they make ): Those small things like animation after collecting jiggy or having to bash buttons or notes being seperate rather than coming in whole packages or Banjo's and Kazooie's faces changing based on the ammount of health they had made the Kazooie a little more detailed and creative. Also, Tooie trying to be like other games (for ex. the shooting areas, races with this stupid yellow bird which drove me mad) is a pretty dumb move since the game already had ALL the mechanics needed to create it's own unique experience without copying any other popular games from those years. Both of the games are great and Kazooie is the prettier and more nostalgic one however we all have to admit that Tooie is just larger and better in most of gameplay and writing aspects.

Banjo Tooie would honestly be the vastly superior game (in my opinion) to BK if it wasn’t for backtracking, excessively empty spaces in the levels, didn’t make some moves redundant, improved updated mini games or less mini games, kept a tiny bit more of the happy Banjo Kazooie charm (such as dancing at the 10th jiggly, more rhymes, happier music for some sections and certain parts of some levels looking less grey) while still balancing it out with the more dark theme, and JamJars wasn’t the main voice for everything. Otherwise, both of them are one of the greatest games ever made.

@@jiggylookback Tbh I'm actually glad they got rid of the jiggy animation for every single jiggy you found, sometimes I just wanted to move and not wait, but the celebration dance for the 10th one would have been fun to see. The mini-games & backtracking felt like a chore to me at certain points but to each their own. If there is ever a remake/remaster of these games, maybe they can add or improve upon some stuff in Tooie (Kazooie is perfect the way it is). Nice comparison video btw.

2:15 This (adding Kazooie) to the attack was likely done as to justify why Banjo can't do it by himself when he splits up (as in Kazooie, it was only Banjo that pulled off this move). That's also probably the reason why they changed Claw Swipe from Kazooie (where it was just Banjo punching) to Peck in Tooie (where instead, it's just Kazooie who does a 1-2-3 peck attack ie. a grounded Rat-tat-tat-tat, with Banjo using his weight to ground the attack), so it would make sense to Banjo to learn his own move (Pack Wack in this case).
PS. For all the flack Claw Swipe got (which to be fair, there were very valid issues with the move), I still enjoyed the move and used it whenever I saw an opportunity XD
6:14 Actually that's the only time you ever actually have to backtrack in Kazooie and that's only if you are going for 100%. I like Tooie over Kazooie, but that's one aspect that Kazooie has Tooie beat.

Personally that’s my favourite part of the game, how complex and intricate the levels and quests are. I think Terrydactyland is a bit empty. The reason is because it has to have wide open spaces with nothing in the way to accommodate the size of the daddy T-Rex transformation. The unfortunate consequence of this is that when you're not playing as the daddy T-rex (which is most of the time since it's only used for scaring a caveman with a roar and nabbing one Jinjo), you have to traverse this ground normally, which is a lot slower. It takes a lot longer to get from place to place than it feels that it should. Not to mention a lot of areas look very similar, and like in Yooka-Laylee fashion, that makes it easy to get lost if you aren't careful. A simple change in visuals for some of the other areas in the world would have gone a long way to mitigate this.

I respect you're opinion and its a very interesting discussion. I much prefer Kazooie however, its worlds evoke much more charm and character. Tooie feels diluted in comparison. It does add some really cool ideas and improvements that you listed, that would be great if they were in the first one however for every good idea it has, it adds 1 or 2 more gimmicky and tedious ones that overall add to a bit of frustration playing the game overall. A lot of later Rare games ruined a great sense of harmonious balance both artistically and mechanically and 'Nintendo sense' refinement that there earlier games had, such as Kazooie, Diddy Kong and Goldeneye. It seems that when they got more free reign, they let their desire to show off and add as much as possible to games like Perfect Dark, Tooie and DK64 get the better of them. They had some great ideas and were incredibly talented still however, and would for sure take more of these over what we get by and large today

Tooie feels a bit dragged, it is very much walking back and forth. I‘m not against backtracking but I think it is just not well implemented. It feels like they just wanted to stretch the game. I also didn‘t like mumbo as a playable character. The only good use for im was In the first world and the Mission with healing the dinosaur baby was clever. Also the worldbuilding is too complex and I think it‘s just annoying sometimes. I would have preferred if they made 15 Jiggys per world, but with more interesting missions. The worlds seemed like they had backtracking just to have it.
The soccer minigame was fun and so was the ability to use mumbo jumbo even though he was essentially reduced to being used to flip a switch or open a door.
Kazooie had the better supporting cast

The eggs largely were pointless I’ll give you that. With the exception of clockwork Kazooie and a few brief uses of the fire and ice eggs.
Backtracking is an essential piece to creating a cohesive interconnected world though not all the backtracking was executed well as in too many steps. It should have been simplified to two steps tops.
I would really argue Tooie has a better supporting cast…it has just about everyone from Kazooie minus Tooty and Brentilda.
We have characters like Bottles wife, Humba, King JINGALING and Gruntys other sisters.
Also Better music is highly subjective. Jinjo Village is one of my favorite banjo tracks of all time and it’s from Tooie. Same with the plot. It’s pretty subjective which you like better.

And it isn't even that good the first time. Most of the mini games take too long and should really just end when you hit the target score instead of going for a time limit approach to get a high score. I replayed Tooie somewhat recently. It gets huge minus points due to the amount of lengthy cutscenes in it that waste your time. In Kazooie, you find a puzzle on the wall, press z, a jingle plays and a very brief cutscene of the world door opening plays. In Tooie, not only do you have to play the puzzle minigame each time, but you then have to watch a 20 second cutscene of jiggywiggy making his floor shiny, watching the camera get to the world door, hitting it with the magic beam, and then the door opening. Tooie is full of stuff like this.
Being able to play as Mumbo is a bad thing imo. He is slow and can't do any moves besides a basic attach and activate the mumbo pads. You don't ever want to play as him and just painfully do it whenever you find another mumbo pad you need to activate.
I think the decision to make the notes all groups of 5 was a bad one. In kazooie, they served as a guide to make sure the player explored every important corner of the level. Tooie doesn't have anything like that, and it really could have benefitted from it.
I still like the game, but i don't think I'll be replaying it ever again. Especially with its overly long intro cutscene.

Fair critiques. For my I enjoyed the jiggywiggy cut scenes they were epic but I agree when I was editing my last video I had so many dialogue scenes in Tooie I felt like it was all I was editing at points.

    1. Banjo-Tooie
    2. DK64
    3. Mario 64
    4. Banjo-Kazooie
    5. Glover
I have to put BK that low because the note system is that bad. If you don't have that awful note system holding it back, it would easily jump above Mario 64. BT isn't perfect, but it's fun and captivating to explore the worlds and solve the puzzles and it's extremely polished and ambitious and kind of acted as a foundation for the modern open world game. The moves are more underwhelming with some just being upgrades of other moves, but that's not a "bad" or "negative" thing; it's just a missed opportunity to have more meaningful moves to add. The game is not harmed by slapping new paint on old moves, it just doesn't gain extra points for it.
