This song stopped me dead in my tracks when it came over the speakers at a fun beach party one night a long ago. I was so poor and so young, yet very energetic, hopeful about love and life. I was a shy romantic and appreciated a good lyricist. I appreciated good vocalists and superb melody. I instantly loved this song. I suppose it stood out because it was so unlike anything going on on the radio at the time - so wonderfully haunting. The same sort of awe happened a bit later with Crowded House’s music. I literally pulled my car over to listen. Of course it was Neil’s work again. Anyway, [short story gone too long here], this number will forever remind me of my wonderful, hopeful youth. This version is fantastic. Cheers and blessings Neil.
I am so crying AT 54 ;) He sounds the same as om MTV when i was a kid i really love both versions, but think i like this one the best, the old guys still has it all makes me feel young at 54 . today's music Sucks !!
I was at the Wellington show, which was amazing. The man is an absolute musical genius and the greatest songwriter of my generation! Allegedly, Paul McCartney was asked...what is it like being the World's beast songwriter, to which he replied...I don't know, ask Neil Finn!!
There are many good singer songwriters. Most recently Ed Sheehan has rightly gained a lot of attention. And, of course, Lennon and McCartney started the genre. But Neil is exceptional. His ear for melody and rhythm is beyond comparison. The orchestra adds another beautiful layer to his skill.
Am I really listening to the mature Neil singing this song, wow, wow, wow, there is no end to the talent and creativity of this greatest singer, song writer of our time, he is endlessly talented forever
Bravo 👏🏻 you pulled it off again Neil. Nobody in NZ has come close to his musicianship apart from Bic. He’s a cut above the rest. Sadly today’s generation don’t know what gem they have in their own backyard NZ. Thank you for sharing your gift with us Neil.
How does Neil's Voice remain so ageless? From Split Enz to Crowded House and everything in between, Neil's Voice has never wavered. One of my generation, and also the generation before me's greatest musicians of all time. 🙂
I was hoping that was the case. It's not possible to by this concert in some form? Seriously!? I'll purchase it immediately. it's amazing. Anyone know how to get the whole concert permanently?
I first heard 'One Step Ahead' on the radio as my parents drove me & my sisters home across the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1981. I thought I was listening to McCartney. Gem of a song with sophisticated harmony, wonderful melody & captivating lyrics. Great to hear 'One Step Ahead' with s string section. A real delight. Thanks, Neil.
I’m so incredibly grateful that I stumbled upon this gem. This has always been one of my favorite songs. I can’t get over how beautiful it sounds with an orchestra. WOW!
WOW----a fantastic version of this song! I only rediscovered it a few weeks ago but I loved it when it came out (I was a teen then) EXCELLENT performance peeps :) Thank you for sharing Mr. Finn :)
I have always loved this song from Split Enz, and find it one of their darkest amongst many of that period and earlier that both Tim and Neil have written. This stunning complex treatment gives it the right atmosphere it deserves.
This concert is amazing. Next venue should be the concert hall in Amsterdam, beautiful acoustics. Such talent!! I am not sure you see these comments, but if you do, Neil your a musical genius.
All about the bass, right? This tune on my Walkman...up there on my mixtape with Steely Dan, PFloyd, James Brown, Til Tuesday, and the rest in small town NZ. Thanks, Split Enz🫶🏼
This would have to be the best version of this song yet. A beautiful arrangement by the master. I wish they would advertise these concerts more. Sorry I missed it.
That is interesting to ponder. I can see why you think so. Intriguing to think what they would have created had they stayed together. A delicious contemplation!
@@SuperEdge67 Definitely. Crowded House was Split Enz with most of the experimentation and edges smoothed over. Neil is very talented but Eddie Raynor's influence on their sound is greatly missed along with Tim's songwriting.
sigh *** hard to believe he is 55, what a genius. If he had been around at the time, he would have hung out with Mozart, Beethoven, Bach ... untouchable talent
This rendition? Perfection, personified! When music was absolutely amazing!

What a beautiful summation of how Neil’s music make us all feel!
Beautifully said!!
2024 - Jesus. we simply dont have music like this anymore. Stunning, Simply stunning.

I was at the Wellington show, which was amazing. The man is an absolute musical genius and the greatest songwriter of my generation! Allegedly, Paul McCartney was asked...what is it like being the World's beast songwriter, to which he replied...I don't know, ask Neil Finn!!
Wow - really?! That's amazing!!
This song was my introduction to the Split Endz. On 8 track no less. The start of my 40 year love of all things Neil Finn.

Sir Paul McCartney agrees with you and so do I. I’ve been a fan since 1986 - he struck me then and then just kept raising the bar.
Shhhh

He has the voice of a tormented angel here.
Incredible! First heard it performed in 1980? 81? At the Ontario Theater, Washington DC.
I always find myself coming back to this clip... isn't it just brilliant?
Quite brilliant! As only Neil Finn can be. Have been impressed by his talent for decades.
100 and 10

Unbeleivable, live both in n.z and melbourne,i got to cook for him..the tone of his voice, live is unbeleivable
Atmospheric: a difficult love, a special time, a blue ocean, an idyllic but mysterious land! Very special!
Absolute genius - this should be released to buy on BluRay / DVD - come on Neil, make it happen!!!!
totally agree

I want this on BluRay so bad!!!!!! Being from the US there is no way I will ever get to see Neil/Tim live. BluRay would be next best.
Ima Gonnagetchew . He tours the US with crowded house and his solo stuff and brother, family......
Just amazing.... still on my 2024 Playlist.
Beautiful version!
Beautiful.
Perfection! Close your eyes and it could be the 80s. His voice still sounds vulnerable and ageless. The strings are amazing, too!
Just like the 80s, RIGHT!?!
This really needs to be released in some fashion. Neil's voice was crystal clear that night.
Gee i really miss Split Enz.
Violin and Finn for the win!
I love the original version but this is soooooo gooood !!!!! 😁
So nice we still have him to enjoy.
IKR???? Both are freaking GREAT!
My Favourite version of this beautifully crafted song which i have always felt is otherworldly now magnified with this Orchestra. Stunning

I agree with Five Minute ... and Heidi.
I saw CH twice in Chicago and once at the Ryman in Nashville. In any guise, he's fantastic.

Incredibly ! How well performed
Fantastic version, love it.
What can be said about the performance of this piece other than it is absolutely arresting. Might be the best live performance he ever did.

No, the Beatles were the Northern Hemiphere Crowded House/Split Enz.
