@@gmansiThere’s another song that I have loved called Iris, I guess they never made a music video of it. I really enjoy listening to this because it takes me back to my early 20’s which I miss dearly lol
If we had the internet back in the 70s-80s I think that Split Enz would have been as prominent around the world as they were in Australasia at the time...a phenomenal group of musicians and the penmanship of Neil Finn really is second to none!...I will make this same comment on every Split Enz song I come across so don't @ me! lol
Yeah, I heard this song via MTV back in the early '80s and became a fan and then a fan of Crowded House, whom I got to see in Daytona Beach during Spring Break in a bit of a storm.Brilliant!
This song is a textbook lesson in restraint on the drums. Eight cymbal crashes in total!! Eight. Not twenty. Eight. The offbeat accents on the hi-hat are brilliant, too. The groove is incredible. I always cite this perfect song as a "less is more" example. Malcolm Green is, and will always be, one of my favorite drummers in one of my favorite bands ever!
In the 80s in NZ we had a lotbof great home grown music rhat was great....add the aussie bands and it was more than enough great sounds for a teenager in Welly.
This past weekend, I was at the "Back to the 80's Cafe" in Las Vegas, Nevada. They played this video, but I couldn't find who it was. It was one of the videos played in the first two hours of MTV. Great stuff by a fantastic band! (and good food at a fun place!)
I was 10. I just knew I wanted to listen. Superior musicians producing quality sounds. The birth of F.M radio and the Brothers Finn and their mates in this kick ass band making freaky new sound with fucking beautiful harmony It captures a listener, compelled almost😂👌to listen.drawn into it.
I was a kid in the 80's.....listening to Split Enz...my brother bought the True Colours album and cassette, so we would sit in the backyard in the middle of b*mf*ck Canada (left coast - Pacific) and listen to the album / cassette all summer long..... in a shitty pup tent....Thanks Neil, Tim, Noel, Nigel, Malcolm and others I can't remember..... and thank you so much evolving into Crowded House......but that's another chapter..... we got Waiata too plus, I visited Te Awamutu...city of roses..
An easy number 1 if re-released. Why hasn't anyone done this considering the dearth of good music for the last 20 years. No wonder the kids are listening to old music now. I feel so sorry for them.
One pharmaceutically-enhanced night in 1981 (after an evening’s gainful employment in a lounge), I discovered these guys, and the Police, within a few minutes of each other on Casey Kasem’s “America’s Top 10:” All of a sudden, I loved Rock ’n’ Roll again. (I hadn’t been this blown away by the sound of a band’s instruments since “H. P. Lovecraft II,” fifteen years earlier.) A cut from one of my personal “Ten Greatest Rock Band” LP’s.
@@CJArnold-hq3ey Not sure I got that, but you are correct, "America's Top 10" was a syndicated weekly video counterpart to Kasem's syndicated weekly radio show, "America's Top 40." I hope this helps to increase your understanding of the period.
Interesting I never heard of this considering it's strong song structure. Thinking this is a free flowing jam session makeover waiting to happen. At 1.125x speed it's obvious it could've been catchy especially with the embracing creative production treatment similar to like Michael Jackson got during the same time period. I don't know though; easier to say than do and glad to stumble across this!
Stop! I confess, sometimes, I don't know where I'm going, part of me stays with you, I'm slowing down, what can I do, it's hard to stay one step ahead of you...
I always thought Split Enz had a Beatles influence to their music. It was like The Beatles if they were a new wave act in the latter 1970s/early 1980s....
Day 6998. 2 x 3499. Raw honey and a few grapes and a bit of apple and all of my urine til 1.00pm then dried figs and black grapes and apple and iceberg lettuce and more urine. No change.
I LOVE this song, but i just used it in a mini thesis to a friend about fu@$k boys, lol. I was explaining how beautiful boys can grab your soul, because the Finn boys had that quality, back in the day.🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
Can someone from the band please fix that audio on this video? The audio quality is terrible compared to the album/cd version of the song... Great song though. I came to listen and was so disappointed by the sound quality i had to go listen elsewhere...
Sounds to me to be running a fraction too fast, it's made the pitch shift up a semi-tone from the original key, and it also makes Neil's vocals sound fractionally chipmunk like. For an official video the band deserve much better than this, whoever posted it for them I think they cocked it up. Listen to any live version of Neil Finn's, or Crowded House (or fans channels who've posted the same promo, and done a better job) the song should sound in the key of G, not Ab.
Split Enz were always "one step ahead" with their music.
More than one

Split Enz you are still one of my very fave ever bands! Pleeeease reform and tour Australia in 2024!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🥰
I saw them on their farewell tour in 2005 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, they were awesome.
Crowded House is touring around NZ now & Aus in Dec 2024. They play a couple of Split Enz songs.
One of New Zealand's greatest exports. Musical creative genius.
Once upon a time, MTV used to play gems like this. This song takes me back. Great song…definitely ahead of its time.
I used to tune in and watch all day in hopes of seeing Split Enz clips, circa 81-83.
Incredible pop song! This should be getting tons of airplay on local 80's stations.
I Got You, Six Months in a Leaky Boat and a lot more!

Split Enz will be much bigger in 100 years than they are now. Bet on it.
Too bad I won’t be around to collect.
Howz that? Aliens & A.I will like Split Endz, aahh OK??
I love Split Enz and this song in particular. It has a slight haunting sound to it, in a good way of course !
So lucky to have been young and inexperienced during the 80's. The sound track was synthesized and phenomenal.
Wow memories, great song, takes me back in time - summer, I was 14 when this song came out and high school. Split Enz were ahead of their time.
Split Enz were such Surrealistic Band ahead of their time and space. 😊👍 so sorely missed.

Love the slinky feel of this track
I remember seeing them live in 1981 and watching Eddie Rayner moon walk long before Michael Jackson got credit for it.
Keyboard dude with some wicked forward moonwalk8ng.
This is my favorite from Split Enz. It has such a dark and sinister tone to it, but still a beautiful melodic pop song.
I haven't hear this song for 40 years . I still love it ❤

1980 or 81? This group had a string of hits around that time. I quite liked them as a 15 yrld.

One of the first picture disc 12 in records I bought in the early 80’s .. great song and group !
Desperately needs to be remixed and re-released. Often hits late 2000s retro vibe in this track.
no... remixes these days destroy the music.
That dude in the back is doing the moonwalk….forwards
That is Eddie Rayner the keyboardist. He use to do that in their live shows befor Michael Jackson ever did it.

At 2:07 the keyboard player--Eddie Rayner--is doing the Moonwalk. Is that one step ahead? Or behind?
I'm in England, still have my laser etched 7" of this I bought just after release.

Not a song i liked but they were pretty groundbreaking with their film clip. Very original.
One step ahead of Jacko . That forward's moonwalk was 1 year ahead
actually more like 3 years ahead.
The Moon Walk was first developed by the choreographer and movie director Bob Fosse, decades before Michael Jackson made it famous.
