Imagine being able to sit down at a piano and come up with this....the guy is a genius and this song is a masterpiece. What a bloody great band these guys are too. As an Aussie kid growing up in NZ, I am so glad to have been a teenager in the mid 80's listening to their music
Yes. They're quite different from each other - different personalities, songwriting styles, and goals. I think they were both head-strong and Neil had his own different musical life to live. Split Enz split :( ... and Crowded House was born :) .
@@neilshepherd1904 Both fantastic musicians, plus got super cute as they aged. lol Split enz and crowded house gave us music to remember. Love them both .
wow last comment 2 years ago so sad only me here enjoying one of my fav songs, love it ! great work lads and forget what Rusty Crowe says ...Thank Christ for NZ ! and God Bless all Kiwis !
The chorus of this song is one of the finest pieces of music I have ever heard. The way it climbs and then resolves at the end is pure genius. Makes me melt....
I saw them at Festival Hall in Melbourne Australia in 1975 from memory with the brilliant Bon Scott and AC/DC. I was 14! My brain was blown by the magnificence of it all!!
Thirty-one years ago, I won my girl with this song playing in my 1976 beater Honda Civic. I wager this song can still clinch the deal even today. Thank you Neil!
In a thousand years, this song will still resonate - for young and for old - it so perfectly captures the giddy uncertainty, trepidation and joy of the one thing that makes our lives worthwhile - love, and all it's consequences.
My older brother bought Split Enz records as a punk when I was a kid in London. Heard them from him. Now he’s gone, listening to them always reminds me of him. Such great music. Kia ora to the Finn brothers & the rest of the boys. You made a difference to peoples lives & your music is out there in the world, entwined with our memories. Chur. Neat alright. Arohanui 💗
The self-awareness and emotional profession (and confession) is stunning. Omg a young 20-something (was he 23?) coming to that realization and making that commitment? "It's no New Year's resolution... it's more than that"? Who else but Neil would be that unique and rare?
@@jovesageradio that is true. But when the entity finds the right one...and the participant is willing. The river flows through them. The artists we revere and gave us timeless classics...all tell a singular story.
This song has me in floods of melancholy tears, and I really don’t know why… it would normally be because of a particular happy, or not, memory but maybe I’ve blocked something out and don’t realise what. It’s beautiful I guess that’s one thing ❤
Just saw a rendition of this song on tv for Mushroom records 50th anniversary. I grew up with this song and never really listened to it. Wow, now in my older years I think its such a great song. One of the all time greats.
If they released this live version on the radio today, it could easily be a top 10 hit. The composition is amazing, the lyrics are pristine and Neil's vocals are fantastic. Of course Tim singing harmony with Neil is ALWAYS magic.
Neil Finn will make you laugh and smile & think "what a charming guy" and then proceed to SHRED your heart & soul with his musical genius. the most extraordinary regular guy in music.
without doubt of the best songs ever written..nz was gifted to have split enz for as long as we did...years ahead of their time...truly gifted musicians
This music never ages. It's perfect. And I always associate New Zealand with it. And I believe the sea is in these songs. And for me, it stands for happiness. Even if it's only in my head, that's all I need!
I saw the Enz on this tour. One of the best concerts I’ve ever witnessed. The entire band is so talented. I don’t understand why they’re not on the road every year. You know you’re going to be entertained when these guys rock up.
Such a BEAUTIFUL song! Fantastic band. Absolutely fantastic. And this, like all their songs, is brilliant. Tim and Neil have bsolutely beautiful voices.
Absolutely outstanding underrated musicians.... A brilliant songwriter always takes me back to the greatest memories of childhood and era in music.... 🎶 👌
Oh wow, I was at this concert back in 06 at the tennis centre, this song was the absolute highlight, closely followed by “6 months in a leaky boat “ though it was all magical. Was just talking to my wife about this performance a couple of days ago and how beautiful it was. So stoked to actually find it on You tube! Still probably the best concert I’ve ever gone to see. Love the Enz!
My fave Enz song of all time. Was privileged to see this version in '06 at Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Brought a tear to my eye. And the song is finished unlike the original studio version
anyone who has been on stage and felt their voice get tired and then start to go knows what Neil was thinking here, but he went for it and my god, his voice sounds sooooooo cool here when it happens, so cool :)
Grew up with Split Enz in NZ...used to watch them all the time at the Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth. Best memories ever..saw them many times. Have always loved Split Enz, and used to buy all their albums back then.. :) Have a very big soft spot for Tim & Neil.
Nice one Tracey. I saw them first in the early 70's at the Buck a head concerts. Then bought all the Vinyl. And saw them live in Welly in 2004/05'ish as the Finn Brothers, just prior to this tour. Forever and ever they are my NZ

My greatest moment was meeting Neil Finn when I was 15 and inadvertently ended up at the Party Boys after party at Delmonicos in Auckland (Tim Shadbolt... enough said! 😂) Split Enz have always been my #1 fave band ever and this is without a doubt the most beautiful love song ever written. My heart melts... ❤️
One of all time favorites.saw it on aussie tv when he was young.great talent.love you forever neil.reminds me of the fun years of my life in oz.my grandson loves Neil Finn. He's 3 and I have to play it for him.😚❤❤❤❤❤
Great music is timeless. Nothing over the last 10 to 20 years, or very little I should say, is timeless. But 50 years and now people will still be listening to this and the Beatles and Led Zeppelin and all of the great music from the 60s through the early 90s. Another way you can tell great music is when years later the artist can do a completely different arrangement the way they did with this song and it’s even better than the original. More poignant more emotional.
Imagine being able to sit down at a piano and come up with this....the guy is a genius and this song is a masterpiece. What a bloody great band these guys are too. As an Aussie kid growing up in NZ, I am so glad to have been a teenager in the mid 80's listening to their music
Fuck, imagine if bands still aspired to be “GREAT”
Thanks for the endless incredible art, Neil and co
One of the greatest songs ever, written by one of the greatest ever song writers....
I was about to say every word you said. Absolutely agree.
@@mattieslurmusic absolutely right.

You can see the magic when they were smiling, waiting to finish.. and the the last line.. 👍🏽
Neil Finn, one of the greatest songwriters in history. The little brother who stole the show.

Not everything he wrote was gold, some of his songs were just album space-fillers.
Personally I always preferred Neil.
back to my beloved 1984, thank you

The best song ever when I was 23.....the best song ever when I am 61....!
The chord progression in this sends a shiver down my spine.
I agree...it's a beautiful song in a melancholy cord...brings back wonderful memories for me
Loving this song all over again
such a beautiful song, just incredible.. Beatles level songwriting ,, seriously!
I love playing this on the piano. Like you say, the chord progression is really special. It's just a bit of genius, that's all.
Chord prog simple but absolutely knock out. Awesome songwriter and great wit too. Top guy.

Classic. The first concert I ever saw, Split Enz at Massey Hall in Toronto in about 1983, with the Payola$ opening. Majestic.

Agree. This song, and "I hope I Never"... Both absolutely brilliant.
When the time comes, play this at my passing ... I still love this song after many years.

I think this is one of the greatest love songs of all time, because it is a real love song, Neil's love for Sharon. Quite beautiful.🌟🌈🐶😇😘😍😅
My favourite song of theirs. Phaark they are GREAT !!!!
Such a beautiful song brings tears to my eyes written by a master
The harmony on "under the MAT" is the center piece of this song. Whoever came up with that progression .... magic.

What I'd give to get them back to The Bowl. It needs to happen
Nice added bridge part to the song there near the end
Find someone that you can sing this song to, and mean every word and have them feel and reciprocate to the same degree.
It was mine and my husbands wedding song back in 1997
Oh yeah, easy....
Tru dat,!
Making me cry....ain’t that easy.

The Legendary Finn Brothers❤

McCartney's ego is to big . Neil loves collaboration
It's already too late for McCartney, I think. He's a spent force.
