Tim was in Crowded House along with Neil for a while, but it was decided (as far as I'm aware) that things weren't really working out so Tim left the band. They'll still close brothers but their musical collaboration in that band wasn't gelling like it did in Split Enz.
As an American who discovered the brothers Finn in London 1988 I feel honored and blessed and Neil’s work became the sound track of my life. So bloody underrated in America it makes me ill. The crap that has been shoved in the Rock n Roll HOF and these guys are not it? It’s a fucking CRIME!!! ( and Hunters and Collectors too)
Hey Thomas Was lucky enough to see split enz a few times and were always great. America has some great rock bands like my favourite Faith no more and pearl jam nirvana soundgarden foo fighters Kiss many more but here in Australia we got songs from there the uk and other parts of the world and started to think we could make music as good as that We lost our sense of inferiority and have had some incredible bands like AC/DC I NXS MIdnight oil.Love Garbage and Sonic Youth but great you know thats not all thewre ois
Tim and Neil are from a small town called Te Awamutu in New Zealand. Ive been there a few times nice place. Before Split Enz were famous and just touring around NZ they stayed at my uncles house in Waihi when they did a local gig. One of the brothers can't confirmed which one asked my uncle if he wanted an autograph, my uncle said no. Good old New Zealand.
Split Enz had energy , melody ,originality and just about everything . Thier songs still sound fresh and full of life and even the ballads are sheer class. I listened to give it a whirl for the first time in ages the other day. You almost felt a wind coming from the speakers. A wall of wonderful sound. I love em.
I will never ever forget that this song was introduced to me for the first time in Grade 12 in Ottawa. I had just transferred to Colonel By High School near the Ottawa River. I had just worked out after school in the school gym and I proceeded outside to head for the bus stop. "Beep, Beep." A silver BMW pulled up beside me and the driver rolled down the window and offered me a ride. The driver was an acquaintance of mine and as we turned out of the school parking lot to the main road he suddenly "Cranked Up" a song on his ultra high-end powerful car stereo. As it pumped through my whole body I was polarized by the atmosphere of the song and it was this very song titled "One Step Ahead."
Musical genius Tim with perfect piped brother Neil . Tight & you know it ! Each taking their own journey's there after & should be nobelled musical ambassadors of new Zealand who had to put up with aussie B. sh..eep. only, to over come ! My heart still flutters God bless you all xo It's the way it is ! Thankyou so kindly
Im 53 For the majority of my life, for the love of sound...this band is always there. This connection between brothers, the rhythm, the beat... Such exuberance , Always relevant 💯💯✅️
Loved seeing them in lower Manhattan at The Ritz and Irving Plaza. They always looked great, all pasty like croupier cadavers. Always a lot of fun. What a great band!
I love their music 🎶 🎤 🎼 just as much as I did back then. In the original the temo change of the druming was a touch of brilliance for me. And I've met the odd lovely alien.😊
Chill dude. It's from an ARIA Hall of Fame inductee celebration performance. The host mentioned Australasia as that is the region and ARIA is the Australian based industry organisation. I thought it was pretty cool of ARIA accepting NZ's greatest ever band as one of all the time great bands from the region. Some Aussies like to stir you guys up as I imagine it can be frustrating seeing some of your great artists travel the world and live abroad for greater commercial audience and success.
Seen them live when they first toured oz at the playroom gold coast what a night to remember and what a venue with a tunnel under the highway strait to the caravan park and camping
While I adore Neil's Gold Top L Paul and wish I owned one myself , it swamps everything in the mix , Nigel Griggs original outstanding walking bass lines are what glues this songs ethereal melody and purpose together for me.
They sounded better the next year after being on tour for a few months. Favourite band from my childhood and was chuffed to see them reform. Even for a tour. ❤️
Lucky Bastards that got to see this ! .. Back in the day, I watched 300+ Bands a Year, in our Pubs and Clubs, over a period of many Years.. .. And there were TOO MANY great live Oz Rock Bands !.. ( Sorry , I'm claiming the Enz as ours).. But IMO , the Six standouts were... Mi-Sex, Mother Goose, The Angels, Split Enz, AC/DC, and Icehouse (in no particular order).. :)
Well, EXCUSE me.. Ozzies have a knack of trying to claim "SPLIT ENZ" as their😆😆😆success. Neil Finn admittedly came out and corrected it, by saying the band was from NZ.. the first appearance on SOLID GOLD in America, hosted by Marilyn Mc Coo was a life long admiration, respect for this talented band of the 80's and to me, will go down in Aotearoa/ NZ Music history as the best NZ BAND"EVER !!! KIAORA!!!😊👍👌
@@majesticgurl8606 one day you may finally get it.... those sort of Aussies are joking about, seeing if they can hook a Kiwi and stir them up. Personally, I don't do it but seen it happen many a time.
Having loved NF CH and the FBs for 26 yrs now and having heard several Enz songs live, for some reason i haven't got properly in to their music at large. This video and the Old Grey Whistle Test footage I've just seen have sealed it and I'm now on the hunt. Awesome share thanks!
@ Tow Ewing - Tom, you need to buy Space Waltz's only LP - that will confirm how integral Eddie Raynor was to them, the Enz, & every other band he touched. And, damn, it's a bloody great LP, sorely overlooked.
When Tim and Neil sing together, it is just magic !
The most beautiful, gut wrenching harmonies...
Tim was in Crowded House along with Neil for a while, but it was decided (as far as I'm aware) that things weren't really working out so Tim left the band. They'll still close brothers but their musical collaboration in that band wasn't gelling like it did in Split Enz.
Best of the best ;D
that's the damn truth
I’m a 33 year old from London and I fucking love these guys. Good music is good music. Anywhere and in any time.
Welcome to the fold, Brother! (From a ~68 yeah old who was there from the get-go. Seen them live, twice!)
You have excellent taste!
you can't put it any better
Their bassist laid a lot of great rythyms in quite a few of their songs. Underrated he is
nigel griggs.
Nigel is incredible... sooooooo underrated...
100%
The bass lines are just so fluent ❤
Nigel is in my top ten bassists. So vastly underrated.

Yip, unbe-fucking-lievable they’re not in it.
Don’t need the HOF to be a great band…

Split Enz are the Beatles of the South Seas.
fuckin a right, cheers, an irishman in alabama
Paul Mcartney also saw their talent as himself and Lennon
Great band
Good enough.
Truly agree with that comment. I always compared the Finn bros to Lennon & McCartney.
i reckon tim finn is the most perfect brother a younger brother could ever wish for
One of THE GREATEST BANDS EVER!!!!!! SO UNDER RATED, FOR SO MUCH TALENT AND GREAT MUSIC!!!
I demand one last Split Enz HOORAH!

You got them !!.. Good on you Brother.. IMO, tragically under-rated, and even better than the Crowdies !! ..
I always suspected that the younger brother had lead vox on #poorboy.....
He crushes it just like the studio version....frikkin flawless
❤
All these years i thought the wrong brother sang the high parts
Not enough words to explain how much I love these guys, back in the day split enz was the 1st kiwi band to get in the us top 20 with i see red ❤🇦🇨🎶

Damn, they're so good live.
Yes, they are.
one of the much under rated groups of our times.....and yes my 24 yr old son loves them too.....lol
My daughter was raised on Finn music ❤
My god these guys are magnificent, way back when and right now!! No change… talent up to their eyeballs - love love ❤❤
Really fantastic live version of this song (Poor Boy). Still got the original True Colours vinyl somewhere.

So fluent, natural and professional. Great performance.
Damn I miss being young and listening to this music, :(
Keep listening, it keeps you young! ♥
History never repeats the best song XTC never wrote.
Lol
Ouch now there's a sick burn, Mr Partridge!
So brilliant these lads!! Much admiration from here in the California desert! 🍸😁
Cheers from Oz
saw these at QEII park chch in 1984...magical times to be growing up round music like this
Just a great band. Very creative pop that doesn't grow old.
Wow, they brought back Mal on drums...
very nice!
Yes and also for our Australian tour.
Split enz, one of my favourite best group. I like most of thier song especialy 6 months leak the boat.

wonderful song to play for the reunion.
I absolutely love this song I saw the play Poor Boy in Sydney back in 2009 featuring Matt Newton as an actor.
still got it!
my favorite enz song
mine too
OMG they're still beautiful and I am still clearly crushing on every single one of them.
My favourite NZ band, no contest.

Next you'll be claiming Sam Neill and Russell Crowe.....and Chinese gooseberries....
@@grahamtrezise1114 You can keep Russell
Hadn't realised how big a part of that sound was Eddie Rayner
Well, check out how flat a lot of their post-Enz stuff sounds. Beats me anybody like CH or Tim's solo stuff.
Yeah, huge part of it. The Tony Banks of the Enz, ever present, but hides himself out the back behind the big names :D
Look up The Makers if you haven't
He's a genius, and it really, REALLY shone in Time and Tide
@@paranormalmanor260 Absolutely. "Pioneer" anyone?
Split Enz at the very top of their game...The mark of any great band is chemistry, and the chemistry these six players have is beyond unique
Pure bliss!
Tim looks as young as his younger brother Neil, minus the grey hair. Well done, Tim!
Tim meditates and swims every day. Quit smoking decades ago and doesn't drink much. He's very healthy.
History Never Repeats..they just turn the switch..and ON! Wow great live-wire performance!
New Zealand thanks
Excellent live reunion...
The arrangements are awesome would have loved to have been there x
Utterly unique.
Then, and now.
Truly.
25 years after and it sounds way better than original version
Loved these since the 70s and it never fails 🎸🎸

Amble up, mess about, pick up their instruments and go. Flawless immediately.
Great bands sound as good or better live.SPLIT ENZ live is musical magic
Niel rocking that LP is awesome..a Fender head thru a Marshall cab=great tone...love Tim's energy and voice..the band sounded brilliant.
YES!!!
Is that a Vox AC30 I see on the stage?
Neil
Bet he still ran it all through a Hot Cake though.
So far ahead of their time, back in the day. and it appears, they still are.

The announcer is wrong.. I saw Split Enz and Crowded House at Darling Harbour on the night of 31/12/1989.
Cool. They should have lasted longer than they did.
