  • Is the Quarken 27 Cabin the boat that will snatch the Axopar 28’s crown? This 8.4m cabin cruiser with its offset wheelhouse does things a little differently and features one of the cleverest interiors on the market.
In this in-depth walkthrough review and sea trial, Jack Haines finds that there is more to the Quarken 27 Cabin than its clever internal layout and eye-catching asymmetrical decks.
Based on the same underpinnings as the 27 T-top, the Cabin has the same lower deck arrangement and the same deep-vee twin-stepped hull mated to a single 300hp Yamaha V8 outboard, the only engine option.
The wheelhouse is packed with glass and its seating is very clever with a great selection of different arrangements depending on whether the boat is being used for travel, dining or leisure.
Below decks, it has an open-plan double berth and a toilet with a sink that can be curtained off from the rest of the cabin. It’s small but sensibly arranged.
The top speed is 43 knots and the boat will cruise comfortably between 20 and 35 knots, 30 knots being the sweet spot.
Let us know in the comments below if you’d rather have this or an Axopar 28 Cabin.

I got my Quarken 27 open delivered last june, so I'm biased, yet I rented an axopar 28 cabin for a couple of days 2 years back. Both great (day)boats and there's a reason I didn't go for a cabin version of either brand, living in the centre of Holland with too many bridges, but I feel that in finish and thinking the concept through in terms of real (experienced) boating usability the Quarken is in fact confirming my decision not to go for the axopar 28 two years ago. I do confirm the engine noise of the Yamaha is slightly more raw and present when at speed and yes the handling is marginally better on the axopar, but still Quarken has got it right..

I think I'm in the minority, but I do prefer asymmetrical cabin boats of this size, as it increases the interior space so much. Having said that though, I've seen all the serious players (Axopar, Ryck, Saxdor, Nimbus, Quarken) and what is the deal breaker for me and my wife is that this doesn't have an enclosed wc - hope Quarken would fix this in the next iteration. Another big flaw with the Quarken 27 is that it only has one vent in the sleeping quarters, so creating a cross breeze isn't possible - another vent on the starboard side would be an easy fix.
My vote is for the Axo 28 and Nimbus C8.

I've been looking around for this.... they're selling for $180k+ in USD (167k euro) -don't know where he's finding this for 100k euro!

I've just spotted your comment and checked their website. The £109K is without propeller, insurance, VAT . etc. etc. On sale used some are going between £123K and £165K like you said.

@@anthonystewart677 Interesting - I checked out this boat at a boat show recently and spoke with the dealer.. after stepping on the boat I immediately didn't like it anymore - it was super cramped (I'm tall, so maybe better for shorter folks) and awkward to move around. The Quarken 35 was nicer, but still felt a small for a 35' boat.

@@matthewp6272Yeah, I think although it is nice to some and has nice performance and handling, there are a lot of issues that would make you look around a bit if you had that kind of cash to part with. It would be just being prudent, really, wouldn't it.

Another great review. I get the impression that the Quarken has a better quality finish (no pun intended) to the Axopar. It looks like the perfect family boat to me, with little to go wrong

I wouldn't say no to one of these if somebody is thinking of what to get me for my birthday but if I'm spending my money I prefer the axopar, it's close but the asymmetric layout puts me off and I think that slight niggle would manifest into regret over time.
    👍❤️🇬🇧

I see lots of boats on this and other channels that look lovely but I'd never manage them by myself. This looks a perfect one man vessel though, small enough to crew by myself and still plenty of room on board.

Finally there is a factory building an asymmetrical cabin boat in nordic style. I never understood all the Nimbus Commuters, Axopar Cross Cabins or Nordkapp Coupes with two deep sidewalks. Why do you need two - do they train for a marathon on these boats? 🤔🤪
    Good Review and top Video!

Its a really nice design, though i do worry somewhat about stress fractures forming around those squared off windows, especially if you live in area's with a lot of rough water.
The fit and finish is great, though personally i prefer inboards for long cruising. It falls into the same feel and price range as the Ranger series tugs.

That cabin offset messes with my ocd. Cant handle the non-symmetry. You can get away with it with a wide and a narrow passageway, but no passageway on one side just looks weird.

Jack, I've been watching and enjoying your work ever since you were with those other guys. I even seen you working in the "how to" videos. Just love what you do buddy.
However, I do know of someone that dislikes your work... She feels I somehow loose connectivity while watching. Yes sir, my boss is a female. The other female in my life pays you no mind.... just sayin...
