It’s bc the reader is a bot that puts the emphasis in the wrong places and speaks with very little variety of inflection. I love Maugham and was disappointed that I hadn’t found a good source of his stories on TH-cam.
Yes , he's fallen out of fashion over recent years . But his best short stories are the equal of Chekhov or Maupassant . He was no " old fogey "...! His style in his prime was just effortless ..
He’s brilliant always underrated! I read him extensively while living in the far east for many years. He really got the atmosphere spot on! Thank you 😃
I would love to do voice overs. I read many of his stories in my teens. Listening to the shorts in the evening for wind down time. I’m always quarrying the ending. Always wanting more. Never fall asleep first. After three short stories I have to stop and count sheep for sleep. Certainly am not getting six to eight hours of sleep. You have a wonderful group of writers to choose from. Many of these stories and books I have reread several times. It is like coming home to a familiar homestead. I may no longer live in the building but the blue ceded is in good shape sprawling over the front porch. The crab apple may be in flower depending on the month or year. Oh my they cut down the original and now it’s a white flowering tree. It is no longer pink. The big oak in the back is my roost for reading but my husband thinks 68 is too old for climbing trees. I gaze fondly at my chair ( leaning branch that stretch’s out from the trunk) is the perfect lounge chair.
Maugham was always non judgmental . He didn't tick boxes or use his talent to signal his Virtue.. He presented the readers with the characters and the situation / events that they found themselves in. The reader was left to draw his / her own conclusions. Similar to Chekhov and Maupassant .? It's just one of the things that makes him " great ".....?
Rather badly read. Sometimes I have to mentally re-wind and re-read the words mentally to grasp the meaning of the sentences, since the reader seems to have little or no comprehension of the sentences he's reading.
There are a number of Ashenden stories by Maugham. Wikipedia says that the next installment should be called 'The Hairless Mexican'. This recording contains the first three chapters ('R', 'A Domicilliary Visit', and 'Miss King')
Thankyou for these. I burned through this author’s work at an early age( young teens) and now that I’m 70’ I can do it again but with more care!
Wisdom comes with Age.....?
Come on! No comments...Maugham is one of the greats of English literature!!!!
That he is. The greatest.
Prefer Agatha Christie

I love the reader. Strong enunciation, inflection, theater background . S M requires attention to catch the subtle meaning. Thanks for posting.
"Of human bondage" if you have not read it, you should!
The Moon and sixpence" as well!
His two best novels and arguably the greatest English novels
This is very enjoyable. Thank you for creating this channel ❤
These are priceless.
I'm just a few minutes in and already hooked. You got yourself another sub.
Great. As, always.
Well done!
Hehe fantastic, after spending most of my life abroad I wonder if in my last moments I shall say ‘ England’ .
The Painted Veil❤
Yes!
And it’s an extraordinary film
Yes! Great! Thank You! Excellent!!!🦩⚜️✨✨✨
This has gotta be A.I. narration.
Yeah. It's a dissapointment. Mispronounced Nice in the beginning. Still, not a bad job, but puts a good voice actor out of work
Yes and several other grating mispronunciations but I suppose it's that or nothing.
great story
Why does his stories always tend to end with an anti climax?

Weird ending.
Climax with an aunty !
Graphomaniac fabrications
I thought it was a very good book , with a very lame ending ....
Disappointing .
Thank you 🙏 but darn what a cliffhanger to end this story on 💯is there by chance any further parts to this brilliant story.
Respectfully, Grace 🩰

@@miarencrowsdaughter6434 thank you 🙏
It's like a story half finished and I feel like I wasted an hour of my life, in that I could have been doing something else.
I do housework while listening.
