Love detective stories across the various genres. Simonen was a genius. Well rendered. Greetings from Australia.

I really enjoy the characterization created by G. Simenon; they are not black/white, good/bad, but human and his lead character is like the sociologist detective. He often is sorting through the lives of those surrounding the crime to uncover the motivation behind each person as he looks for the criminal; very often he has compassion for the circumstances that create a regular everyday “Joe/Mary” to be compelled into a criminal act.
Love all your choices & I ESPECIALLY like being able to come here for those stories or authors that are NOT anywhere else.
Hope all is well! Cheers! 🪭

Wow, Tony, I have listened to this book at another TH-cam channel and I will just tell you the Reader makes all the difference! you really bring all your stories to life. Love it! I tell all my friends that I go to bed with Tony Walker every night L O L! Don’t worry, I’m 72, and quite content not chasing after men big smile, I often fall asleep at night and have to figure out where I left off and finish the story in the morning. You’re really the best! Thanks. 2:38

Great commentary at the end, thanks. Very insightful and informative, for a relatively new Maigret fan, such as me. On the personality of the detective, i think there has to be qualities there which appeal to the audience. You mention Columbo, referring to his seemingly bungling, dim-wittedness. When all along the barrage of questions, his constant badgering of the perpetrators is a clever ruse to force the hand, and all done with a respectable humbleness. Maigret on the other hand, imho, relentless determination to solve the "puzzle ' as you termed it. I really like how Maigret keeps every one around him focused, he doesn't, to use the cliche, suffer fools gladly, yet still commands great respect from his colleagues as well as criminals and civilians alike. Straight down the line character, logical with no thrills. No deerstalker, pipe and 7% solution for this French detective. Not to say I'm not a Sherlock Holmes & Dr Watson fan. Hope this all made sense?

Wow! WHAT a story! For me, this one felt very different from the other Maigret stories- sure, it has us hoping- from what we know of Maigret's character- that he has cleverly put the pieces of the jigsaw together and the baddie gets caught, but there were the two very clever plot twists which prevents us from guessing the end- immensely enjoyable -partly because we get some surprises- right until the very end!- Thanks!

Simenon does a thing Ive noticed also in the wonderful Martin Beck stories, I am sure you have too. Deliberately makes it boring, to emphasise the repetitive nature of police investigation. Except it is never boring. Opposite of action stuff. And thats a rare talent. And yes of course its a police procedural! If only for this reason.

Love the Maigret stories. Have we lost our love of stories? Imagine, sitting in the tent, sitting round the fire . . . Now most of the stories we imbibe are absolute shite interlaced with inappropriate adverts. A good narrator reading a well written tale is a thing of wonder. Can be repeated even if you know the end, cos you appreciate something different every time.

Your teeth coming in are painful -- but they're just as painful coming out as well.😅
I've said it many times before but I'll say it one more time: I love the commentary, the sleeping dogs, the page turnings and the teething grandchild. I wouldn't take your channel any other way.
As for the story I knew it would be good, being one of your narrations, but this one felt even more immersive. I thoroughly enjoyed the foreign (to me) aspect along with all the incredible accents -- as well as the dry humor so rarely featured in American boilers. To this homogenized American, the old Paris Ghetto holds quite a bit of romance. As always, thank you so much for your time and hard work.
Love to Sheila, the dogs, kids, grand-kids, the scrapman, random parakeets and everyone else whose generosity forms the part of you that your audience has the good sense to engage with. Live long, Tony Walker.

I'm into Norse hard boiled detective Harry Hole`. I'm of Scandinavian descent and my grandparents spoke Norwegian so it's very cozy for me. But Harry feels very American to be nevertheless, because he's jaded and traumatized, damaged and also never runs shorts of horrendous murderers to chase. I can't imagine Norway being stuffed with serial killers like in Yank country. But Jo Nesbo is fantastic, imo, even if the genre is a well beaten path.

I don't think we are completely misdirected. Margaret says in the story he isn't sure which one is Stan and he goes on to then count off each person with Lucas. That is when I figured out who he was. That is misdirection for pre-war France, though. Hope you will do more Maigret stories!

WOW, HOW WONDERFUL TO FIND MAIGRET AMONG THE LISTINGS, I AM RAPT. SO GOOD TO HEAR SOMEBODY PRONOUNCE POIROT'S NAME CORRECTLY. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND OUT WHICH SERIES IT IS WHERE MAIGRET SPEAKS A LOT OF FRENCH, PARTICULARLY WHERE ADDRESSES ARE CONCERNED. I JUST LOVE HIS VOICE. I HAVE BEEN TO FRANCE ON A CAT JUDGES TOUR IN 1977 BUT NOT LONG ENOUGH TO LEARN MUCH FRENCH AND OF COURSE BY THEN THE FRENCH WERE SPEAKING A FAIR BIT OF ENGLISH. I WAS GIVEN A HINT, WE WERE TOLD THAT IF WE WENT FOR A WALK, WALK AS THOUGH YOU KNEW WHERE YOU WERE GOING, DO NOT ACT AS A TOURIST AND YOU WOULD BE A LOT SAFER. ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU FOR MAIGRET. BLESSINGS, TRIXIE, 87, SOUTH AUSTRALIA. XXX
