This is why we need to trust the television animation division even more and stop them from making any animated movies for a while until they are ready. We already did that for Warner Bros for a little while, after Back in Action bombed in the box office. They didn't return until The Lego Movie came out and became a success.
I've seen old concepts where Magnifico and Amaya were both the villains, where Star wasn't a tiny plushie thing but instead a shape-shifting boy Asha was going to fall in love with, and honestly every other concept was better than what we got.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of Disney’s latest movies had genuinely good concept art/interesting plots that ended up getting removed or changed thanks to meddling from the higher ups
How can Disney literally make a perfect short to celebrate their 100th anniversary yet completely fail in making a movie to do so? This brand doesn’t make any sense anymore. I feel nothing towards them.
It's incredible how this movie made the protagonist the twist villain. Also Disney not being able to make 2D animation anymore is a HUGE SKILL ISSUE MOMENT
All the freaking money in the world, and they cannot open up the disney archive or REWATCH THEIR MAKINGS OF!? There's animators on youtube who can replicate and even do better. Is it so hard?
I think that was the funniest thing I've learned about this movie. Disney. The people that brought us some of the most jaw dropping animated movies, are now too lazy to learn how to 2D again. Fucking DISNEY.
@@Polomance862 i feel like, despite what they say, it's less about the difficulty and more about the money and also like the fact 2d animation is more unionized than 3d is
Once Upon a Studio is what I would consider Disney's true celebration of 100 years because at least that short wasn't confused in its theme and the references felt like they were made out of genuine appreciation for their past instead of cynical MCU-tier "I recognize that thing" noatalgia pandering.
Like I said, this is why we need to trust the television animation division even more. They need to halt all their animated movies for a while, like Warner Bros did back in 2003 (or 2004), until they find more success in their animated shows. (Pixar can still survive for a bit, tho.)
It would have made so much more sense if Asha DID become Magnifico's apprentice, began to learn magic herself, and then started to realize Magnifico has bad motivations and accidentally uses her newfound magic to call down a star.
The crazy thing is that I kinda side with Magnifico. If Bruce Almighty taught us anything, it's that not everyone can get their wishes or prayers answered. Because it that were to happen, it would be absolute chaos and society would collapse.
@@eret3Who cares? It would have been far more interesting and made a lot more sense. We still would have found out early on that he was the villain. It’s not like it would have been a twist that got thrown in at the end of the movie.
@@eret3 Actually, that just depends on how they portray him in the first place- Asha could have been naive and over-looked his red flags and excused them in the beginning, but seeing how he hoards all the wishes she takes his book and summons Star. Magnifico could have been obviously bad from the get go to make him not a twist villain, the closest I could explain it is like Mother Gothel from Tangled. It would also be better if they kept Star in his original (human/shape-shifting form) and taught her his magic. Literally the ideas are endless with this premise.
I rewatched Puss in Boots The Last Wish for the 10th time and realized that it portrays "getting what you wish for without magic" way better than a movie centered around granting wishes. This movie is the epitome of Disney's unique ability to squander storytelling potential at every opportunity, and I said that BEFORE I learned about the concept art that implied the king AND queen were going to be evil and Asha was going to have a romance arc with a "Wish Boy" before they turned him into a Luma from Super Mario Galaxy
They should’ve actually had a romantic relationship in the movie. Disney are too chickenshit to go back to romance cause Buzzfeed feminist articles scared them into never touching that again. It’s to Disney what “Super Size Me” was to McDonalds.
@@Nightman221k Strange World is the closest thing we have for a recent romantic relationship, it would have appealed, or rather pander, those clamoring that type of relationship in bigger medias.
The worst part is that the concepts of this movie are literally better than the finished version. Ex: the star was actually going to be a shapeshifting boy who would've been Asha's love interest and the king and queen would be an evil duo...
@guesta9822 So a woman having a love interest automatically makes her weak? I don’t care if Asha had a love interest or not… as long as she has a personality and role outside of that love I’m alright. Regardless of if he is a love interest, the idea of the star being a shapeshifter is actually pretty cool lol
Fun, or unfunny, piece of trivia: the idea was to have a villainous couple with an evil king and queen. The only unique thing it could've had, anf they deleted it.
And the star was originally gonna be human and Asha's love interest. Like, how do you make a movie meant to pay homage to previous Disney movies and not include a love story.
The star was supposed to be a shape shifter that was called "Wish Boy" and took on a human form and Ashamed was supposed to fall in love with him but they cut that too
It’s kinda tragic looking at the concepts honestly. This movie could have been a pretty cool anniversary film, if they focused on the actual storytelling instead of “hey let’s check off what fans want lol”
The thing that makes this movie even more infuriating is that there WERE interesting concepts during it's development that got scrapped. - The Star was originally gonna be done in 2D - The Star was also going to be a shapeshifter - The King AND Queen were originally both gonna be evil, giving us our first Disney evil couple
I really really wish the star ended up being an actual character like they had planned. I feel like they were milking the fact that he was cute way too much and he just ended up being plain. I felt no connection or concern for this character at all.
It's sad that Disney "celebrated" their 100 year milestone by making one of their most forgettable movie's yet. And it's a shame too since this is the movie that brought back traditional villain's.
I believe the reason why they didn't make it fully 2D animated in traditional way is because Disney has zero talents who know how to draw without the use of 3D modeling. They have 3D sculpturers and programmers, no traditional artists who actually know how to use a brush or paints.
80s: Bad decade for Disney 90s: Good decade for Disney 00s: Bad decade for Disney 10s: Good decade for Disney 20s: Bad decade for Disney It's honestly insane how consistent this is.
Yeah, but this is goddamn awful. Bad messages, no substance. All tech and no soul. Like your printer, that printed your thesis and you still think it was your worse work
I mean, even the "bad" movies of the 80s weren't actually bad. The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver are pretty dope, just not as iconic as the golden&silver age films. And they're definitely more fun than what Disney released in recent years
Didn’t The Little Mermaid come out in the 80’s? Along with Princess and the Frog in 2009 and Lilo and Stitch in 2002? Disney is horrible because they’re not focused on making good stories, they’re focused on how much money they can get from China.
Wish doesn't feel like a celebration of their animated films, feels like a forced excuse to get into the "Spider-verse animation style" hype train without taking the risk like other movies have, and the fact that it cost $200 million to make it's even more embarrassing
@@lizzy1876as much as I love animation and Spiderverse, the insane explotation of animatorsby companies is present almost everywhere. Is honestly a tragedy that art is made with the blood of so many overworked artists.
I don't know how Disney movies struggle with making villains, considering their TVA department consistently cooks. Emperor Belos is one of my favorite villains of all time.
King Midnifico: Mwa-ha-ha! My magic green and spoopy now! I'm unstoppable! Emperor Belos: *_BECOMES HYPER-RACIST GODZILLA AND SHOOTS DEATH BEAMS AT THE POPULACE WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BRINGING THE DEAD CORPSE OF A CONTINENT THEY ALL LIVE ON BACK FROM THE GRAVE._*
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. When I first saw the art style in the trailer, I thought it reeked of "I want to be trendy and do the Spider-Verse art style so badly, but I'm afraid of committing to an entirely different style than my own."
And Spiderverse was a celebration, like how Wish is supposed to celebrate Disney. Spiderverse was celebrating Spiderman, and also celebrating superhero comics in general. The 2D effects emulate comic book effects, There's references to super obscure things, and the second movie pretty much embodies how Spiderman has been treated over the years. They even brought back Spectacular Spiderman for a scene.
@genericname2747 Spider-Verse is a celebration/love letter to every iteration of Spider-Man and STILL manages to tell a powerful, great story. Studios should take more away from it than just "unusual animation + ReFeReNcEs = smash hit!"
My daughter and I saw this yesterday and when the king went from slightly egotistical to shouting at Asha in 0.0 seconds, it was jarring. It came out of nowhere and made absolutely no sense. Then there was literally no reason given for why Magnifico was so worried about the magic the star emitted other than "magic is forbidden." WHY??? Is it just because the king wants to maintain control of the kingdom? Is it because the people who killed his family and destroyed his village used magic?? There really is no reason given as to why he becomes so paranoid and unhinged overnight - he just does because he's the villain and needs to "go bad."
@@justsomegirlwithoutamustache yes. The whole turning mom into a bear thing was not supposed to happen. Probably because the original writing team used Google and knew that bears went extinct in Scotland a looooooong time ago, certainly before the medieval-ish time frame of the movie.
That's exactly what my husband and I said. He creates a utopia where everyone is actually productive and happy. He prevents certain wishes because they could be dangerous and yet, he's the bad guy? What Asha wanted could have detrimental consequences. People say it's about free will, but it isn't because Asha becomes their "fairy Godmother" and has magic. So they aren't working on their goals when she is now willingly granting them. It simply makes no sense.
People keep making excuses for the animation in Wish, like, "They're doing what Klaus did, and you guys liked that" Uhm, no. Klaus was fully 2D animated, digitally colored, and then lit with specialized CGI software that mimicked 3D lighting in the 2D scenes. And while the animation in Klaus is stunning, that's not its only positive trait. It also has a beautiful, heart-felt story. I teared up quite a few times watching that wonderful movie.
There's a line in one of the songs that is "Get that into your system, solar." and it really comes off as them generating lyrics with AI and correcting it later.
making King AND the Queen villains together sounds way more interesting and knowing how the execs. were rushing them to make an anniversary movie says something.
Disney celebrating wish is like a celebrating a birthday with a cupcake with nothing. Edit: I changed my mind, Disney celebrating with wish is like lighting up a single candle and immediately blowing it out.
It’s embarrassing how a 9 minute short did a fantastic job at honoring the century long legacy of this company and being thankful to everyone and it’s founder that helped get the studio to where it is today while making me feel like I was a kid watching the Disney animated movies I loved when I was younger compared to an hour and a half movie that suffers so much of an identity crisis that even Walt Disney would be ashamed of.
I know this movie has been talked to death but Puss in Boots The Last Wish is basically what Wish was trying to be but actually successful. Not only does handle the message of "not needing magic to make your wish come true" much better, but it does so while adding other themes, being bloody hilarious, and incredibly mature. The film doesn't try to dumb itself down cause it knows kids are smarter then some people realise and it's become one of my favourite films of all time With Wish it feels like a movie specifically made just so it can sell dolls and merch to kids, while it's not as bad as Raya or Ralph Breaks The Internet, there was just the this feeling like this film was just made to make money
I know I didn't see this movie yet, but after looking at the trailers and teasers, at least Ralph Breaks The Internet and Raya and the Last Dragon has some interesting moments. Wish... feels like the next Emoji Movie to me. Not as terrible as that movie and Norm of the North, but still... lacking in writing and humor.
I agree, but I think it's funny that they're trying to sell dolls and merch although they didn't put nearly enough effort into Asha for kids to like her
I heard the original concept was that the king and the queen were both evil, and I got to say, it makes a lot of sense if they tried to cram both characters' traits into Magnifico.
@@latroletteeeee If you have Disney+, they have behind the scenes stuff where they talk about how the movies were made. There’s most likely one about Wish
Or even just “I let you live here and I don’t even charge you rent” would have worked too. I don’t know how they managed to fuck up the lyric so badly.
The main writer on Wish was also the one who wrote Raya and the last dragon apparently so poorly thought out characters and themes were sadly unavoidable.
Are you talking about Fawn Veerasunthorn? She didn’t write Raya. She is just the leading storyboard artist. From what I see none of Wish’s writers have involvement in Raya’s writing at all. Ok maybe none of them was credited. Raya and the last dragon is ass though. One of the most hollow and overrated movie I’ve ever watched.
This is honestly sad. People were really hoping that this movie would be good despite all the flops and disappointments Modern Disney has made these days. But NOPE. Wish is just another addition to those flops. Great job Disney! You never fail to disappoint, nowadays.
The sad thing about this movie is that it ACTUALLY had potential TO BE GOOD, if they bothered to make it an ACTUAL story instead of a checklist of Disney tropes and Easter egg fest. Once Upon a Studio was all we needed for Disney’s 100th. Wish should’ve just been its own thing with a natural, ACTUAL story.

@@Δ-Δ-Δ-Δ this is not the first time Disney has struggled. The 40's 80s and Early 2000s were bad times for Disney. But those bad times forced them to change and adapt. Its a cycle, hopefully the 2030s will bring in new innovation and creativity to the studio.

The difference is indie animators only get one or two shots, and have to go all out because everything is on the line. Disney could stop producing anything altogether and it would still take another century before they go out of business. They play it safe because they *are* safe. Realistically they just didn't want to because they disbanded their 2D department. That, and it's easier to make a sequel if you already have the 3D models lying around.
It’s a shame when it comes to the animation. When you look at the concept art, it’s beautiful! The artists working on the movie clearly had a lot of beautiful ideas for the visual style of the movie. It seems like Disney as a company came in and really messed with the creative process. It’s like they see recent stylized animated features (SpiderVerse, Mitchell vs The Machines, Puss in Boots, etc) and how popular they are among audiences, Disney wanting to jump on the ‘trend’ but to scared to lose their ‘iconic’ look they’ve been using since Tangled, so the end product looks like a half baked film with an Instagram filter slapped on it. Not to mention in the original concept, the star was supposed to be a star-boy shape shifter who would’ve been a love interest for Asha, and the king and queen were supposed to be an evil couple duo, which would’ve been so cool to see!
Thing is they barely have anyone who still does 2d it's a lost art there remember the God awful Marry Poppins sequel (yes that really happened) they had too bring in artists they let go cause nobody could do the 2d animation with real actors bit. Plus that requires talent something Disney is sorely lacking, in general, nowadays
Almost like Disney was too lazy to buy some animators from netflix like the guys who did Love death and robots or hire animators from Cartoon Saloon since they made 1 Star wars episode
I’m surprised that Schaff didn’t mention that stupid retconning of Asha as the Fairy Godmother, especially since he’s a huge fan of “Shrek 2” and that movie’s Fairy Godmother. 😆
At this point Disney has just completely forgotten about the saying *”quality over quantity.”* Did you know that the writers at Disney were once given 6 whole months to write out a story? Why have film companies just completely forgotten about that it doesn’t matter how long it takes to make a film, all that matters is that the film turns out good! If a movie is good, it’s likely that people are gonna watch it! Many people today don’t care as much anymore about deadlines, THEY JUST WANNA SEE A GOOD MOVIE!! Plus it gets people all the more hyped up when the movie does eventually come out! The only way Disney can save themselves now is if they just stop, take a step back, and reevaluate everything and start fresh. Because what they’ve been doing is getting exhausting to watch.
The problem with Magnifico were the crew were more concerned about creating a Himbo Twitter and TikTok would mating bray over than construct a villain that was actually, you know, written competently. The problem isn’t even that Disney’s grown complacent. It’s like they’ve completely forgotten how they were pre-Renaissance, where they were on the brink of being completely destroyed had it not been for The Little Mermaid. And just like a self-fulfilling prophecy, it looks like they’re gonna be on the brink again if they continue as they are with their movies.

This movie reminds me of one of the art classes I used to have. I was doing water coloring and was focussing too much on niceness and gentle colours and doing pretty. When I was at college, I did a unit on 2d animation and how disney mixed 2d and 3d together when creating tarzan. With today's technology, I'm surprised disney are finding it hard to blendd to two together to create something like we had in the past. Shame. I mean why have they cut corners to give us this? "Wish isn't a movie for me. It's a product". I feel like this is something that can very easily be said about most Disney outings for the last few years, to be honest.
The scrapped content for this movie is downright heartbreaking knowing what we could've had. The star was originally gonna be a magical star boy love interest similar to Peter Pan and the queen was gonna be a villain with the king and they were gonna be a villain power couple.
Also the main villain as you discribed him on why he cant grant certain wishes made me think of the disney company, only giving (movies) wishes that allow him to keep his power and stays away from risky wishes(movies) for the same reason

So I think I know why the music in this movie sounds so much like generic pop. Because it was produced by people who work in that field. The one dude worked on the Lady Gaga: Hold my Hand music video and was an song recording audio engineer for A Star is Born. The other writes songs for people like: Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, Shawn Mendes, Britney Spears, Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, Hailee Steinfeld, and even Gwen Stefani. Oh and she composed the theme song for Austin & Ally. They both work in the pop industry and from what I can tell, have had no real experience in the musical theater business, which is a massive problem if you want your music to sound like the old Disney numbers. Disney music is based on musical theater rules, it's why the Renaissance works are so beloved, catchy and memorable. They are full of soul which is why you love the characters attached to them. But these? There's nothing impactful about them outside of how *cringy* they are. They are just hollow.
I just watched Wish today in the cinemas, and the first thing that went through my head as I walked straight out of the theatre was “I’m going back to my crazed encanto phase.” No but srsly, I really do miss it when Disney made such good movies, they’re what built my childhood and who I am today. Why can’t Disney just open up and make such simple changes?😭
Asha becoming Cinderella's fairy gomother just seems so odd. Like what she got vitiligo like Michael Jackson? Did she just gain an English accent? How'd her hair change textures like that? HER EYE COLOR???
When I first saw the animation for Wish, I immediately thought it looked like one of those preschool cartoons that come out on Playhouse Disney. Like, it was cutsie--but not exactly what you'd expect for movie quality...
This film felt like what Disney believed the fans wanted by crossing off a bunch of boxes on a checklist without putting much effort into any of the tasks on the list.
I had no idea this movie was supposed to be a celebration of 100 years of Disney. It just seemed like the movie that just so happened to release a month after the 100th anniversary.
What sucks is that King Magnifico has nice design and they gave him a wife, and Disney literally did nothing with both. He's the first [disney] villian with a wife, and it goes no where. So disappointing. 😢

But, Disney right now is always playing "Man Bad, Woman Good" card every time.
They start with the premise "not every wish should be granted" Well what did you ever do to get the power to decide who's wishes are worth granting? "I will grant every wish" There is soooo much potential there. "I wish my room would clean itself" (Sorcerer's Apprentice results) "I wish I could understand animals" (so many voices that will not stop talking) "I wish for revenge" (that caused a cycle of violence) Massive chaos results from granting all the wishes and princess is running around trying to fix it but the wish granter can't make wishes or undo granted wishes. In desperation, the princess goes to the deposed king and begs for help. King agrees to help if she becomes his apprentice and does things his way in the future. She agrees and he wishes for a time machine that will take her back before she deposed him so she can explain everything to her past self. Once she convinces herself not to grant all the wishes she returns to the present to find the king has arranged the official announcement that she is his apprentice. The first time she denies a wish someone asks, "Why do you get to decide who's wishes are worth granting?" It would piss off young adults but parents are the main audience for Disney and they would love it.
Based of what everyone is saying about the movie, it basically exists as a future kingdom hearts level/plotline Ngl I can already tell the KH level based off this movie is gonna be good

Not only does it actually take place in the 1920s, the film has a banger soundtrack, its actually 2D animated, it uses the Disney tropes to great affect, it has the complex and charming and enduring characters. And it even used the Disney star to good effect with the whole wishes coming true. It so sad to see Disney in this state of creative bankruptcy.

Dang, massively disappointed but not surprised. I feel sorry for those creatives behind the movie who genuinely had a story to tell, but got knocked down in favour of being tame. Ugh, as someone who became an Artist from drawing Ariel over and over again as a little girl and have a lot of admiration for the company, do better Disney. The potential was here.
The concept of the movie had an evil royal couple and a romance between Asha and the Star who had a male form. An awesome concept I can think of is the King and Queen were both evil and Asha is their daughter so she grew up thinking that stealing wishes is the right thing. Then the Star boy comes and has to help teach her the right way. What if you made the Star have to help her learn in order to be able to go back to the stars after. I’m on the verge of writing and designing that story myself
I was gonna watch this movie but then I realised that Disney fell off harder than a broken TV and I also saw videos that clowned the soundtrack on TikTok
9:00 Huh...is it weird that I think Dreamworks did a better job at making a 100 years of Disney movie, then Disney did when they made Puss in Boots two? Like its a movie about wishes, it has a confident character who embodies the company in one way or another, it has many references and call backs to classic fairy tails and especially ones made by Disney, it has THREE villains that can incorporate the past present and future, it mixes tradition and new CGI art styles seamlessly with a beautiful water colour aesthetic. Has a animal sidekicks AMOUNG animal side kicks (XD) Its funny, scary, heart warming, and thoughtful all at the same time, and its actually a perfect film Puss and Boots 2 is what Wish WANTS to be, but is an absolute failure in comparison. Maybe I'll just go watch that again.
Regarding your point about Disney movies making progressively less profit on the nearby future: it's already true, Wish had a 200 million dolar _production_ budget and it's doing quite poorly to the point is losing money

@@eret3Who cares? It would have been far more interesting and made a lot more sense. We still would have found out early on that he was the villain. It’s not like it would have been a twist that got thrown in at the end of the movie.
@@eret3
Actually, that just depends on how they portray him in the first place- Asha could have been naive and over-looked his red flags and excused them in the beginning, but seeing how he hoards all the wishes she takes his book and summons Star.
I also loved this part where the map was actually telling everybody that what they want is right in front of them all along.
They should’ve actually had a romantic relationship in the movie. Disney are too chickenshit to go back to romance cause Buzzfeed feminist articles scared them into never touching that again. It’s to Disney what “Super Size Me” was to McDonalds.

The Holy Trinity of movie criticism. I always watch those three.
You voiced the complaints I had about the animation perfectly. And the story, ugh...the story had the potential to be much better than it was.
It never did. Every interesting story beat you could think of, someone else would find offensive.
The story was a sloppy, incoherent mess. Only toddlers are going to enjoy this film because it's cute to look at.
Not even it's target audience is enjoying the movie; it's flopping so hard at the box office and at this point Disney isn't trying at all
At this point Disney has just completely forgotten about the saying *”quality over quantity.”* Did you know that the writers at Disney were once given 6 whole months to write out a story?
And all this is is Ralph Breaks the Internet AGAIN. The fact they didn't learn from that says a lot.
The problem with Magnifico is that his concept works, but they botched the execution so bad it's not even hilarious.
@@eatatjoes6751 It's like watching a car crash in the making and still being shocked it happened.
@@eatatjoes6751 They had the bones for a tragic villain who fell to a 'shortcut' of using dark magic, and a villain who's hidden only to his people, but is otherwise a straight up evil narcissist... and smashed them together and thought it would be coherent.
@@SuperCosmicMutantSquid Exactly.
@@orangesocks5385 That just sucks, right?
The problem isn’t even that Disney’s grown complacent. It’s like they’ve completely forgotten how they were pre-Renaissance, where they were on the brink of being completely destroyed had it not been for The Little Mermaid. And just like a self-fulfilling prophecy, it looks like they’re gonna be on the brink again if they continue as they are with their movies.

The disney limbo phase is incredibly sad. seeing this huge part of my childhood just collapsing into itself, destabilized by their own bad decisions is just painful.
Honestly it would’ve been nice seeing Disney re-create their old 2-D animations that they used to do for this anniversary, sadly we didn’t get that.🐱
like the re-makes? man if thats what you mean, then i think that's the one thing that they could do that would be even worse than Wish
If Wish was 2D animated instead of that watercolor CGI look we’d all be happy. Still have issues but we’d all be happy since it’s 2D. But unfortunately that’s not what happened and I don’t think 2D will ever come back to Disney.
@@JonathanGaeta Their last 2D movie flopped hard and that was the princess and the frog. The consumers made it clear that west isnt interested in 2D Disney movies anymore, thats why Disney doesnt do it.
@@jayambi7695 well last I checked, yes Princess And The Frog was a flop, but it wasn’t the big one. The big one was 2011’s Winnie The Pooh as that flopped hard because it was released on the same day alongside the final Harry Potter movie, that’s what truly killed 2D animation at Disney.
@@JonathanGaeta The Princess and the Frog was released when the first Avatar film was released, the highest grossing film in history.
This movie reminds me of one of the art classes I used to have. I was doing water coloring and was focussing too much on niceness and gentle colours and doing pretty. My teacher came around with darker color palette and asked for more drama because I can do better. I had a go and this turned out to be the best painting I've ever done.
I feel like this movie could have done better in all accounts. The original consept was not bad!

This movie seemed to be a Frankenstein monster of what Disney assumes the fans want.
In the end, it's an accurate allegory for what Disney has become, a zombie.
They saw Puss In Boots (TLW) and wanted to make this movie look like that, with the idea of making Wish resemble a story book. They couldn’t pull it off the same way. And that’s why you don’t cheat on your tests, people.
As sad as it is to witness Disney animation's spectacular fall off, it makes me excited and hopeful for the future of animation. Disney had a good run but it's time for a shake up in the industry.
You wanting them dead is kinda stupid.
@@achaudhari101 I don't necessarily think it's them wanting Disney dead, but moreso for animation from large companies to get more creative and interesting -- which in turn will force Disney to step up their game
@@locurset Problem is that once the apathy kicks in, they stop caring and just want things to die then.
@@achaudhari101Why bother with a crappy 100 year anniversary, then, if they ran out of steam a while ago?
@@achaudhari101 Why is it stupid to want a morally-bereft company that offers nothing and contributes nothing to collapse under its own weight and stop using resources that could be better used elsewhere? That seems very sensible. Wanting them to continue existing is kinda stupid.
Ironically, the movie’s story becomes a whole lot better if you interpret it as an allegory for modern Disney (Magnifico) trying to maintain its monopoly against competition from independent creators (the Star)
but in truth, they're all equal.
It's the choices they make.
When I was at college, I did a unit on 2d animation and how disney mixed 2d and 3d together when creating tarzan. With today's technology, I'm surprised disney are finding it hard to blendd to two together to create something like we had in the past. Shame. I mean why have they cut corners to give us this? Especially for 100 years.
This was one of my first thoughts when he mentioned that they claimed it would be too hard. They'd have to revive their 2D feature production pipeline (which would be very expensive) but it could've absolutely been done
they are not escaping AI allegations with this one
Once Upon A Studio was a perfect example of the creative Disney's side. In fact, it feels like the true 100 year celebration.
We were robbed
As a lazy person myself, this feels like some type of project I would make for school; half-assed, rushed and no care whatsoever.
You will always have Uptown Girls starring Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning.

while this movie just..exists...sigh they will never learn huh?

“Princess and the Frog” wasn’t the last 2D animated film they did. People seem to forget that “Winnie the Pooh” in 2011 was their last 2D animated film
But the last Princess film in 2D.
@@HafzaProductions2019 So? It still wasn't their last hand drawn film.
@@geoffreyrichards6079 Yes I know. But if we’re talking about the Princess series specifically, then that Princess and the Frog movie is the last but in general, Winnie the Pooh is the last 2D animation film.
That film was pretty much a B film and wasn’t meant to be a serious film like sleeping beauty
@@staringcorgi6475 No, but it was intended to be their followup to "Princess and the Frog" as the next 2D animated film. And they didn't handle it well.
3:40 I'm unsure if anyone mentioned it already but the last traditionally 2d animated movie was actually Winne the Pooh from 2011 not Princess and the Frog.
Since Winne the Pooh failed and didn't earn that much money Disney decided to stop making any more 2d movies.
Pooh opening the same day as Deathly Hallows Part 2 was quite the move and that failed spectacularly.
Also what about the Bob's Burgers Movie? Does that count? I mean it is fox?
@@cradica We're talking only about Walt Disney Animation Studios films.
4:26 This is especially egregious since legendary animator Richard Williams, responsible for _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_ and _The Thief and the Cobbler,_ was known for masterfully animating in perspective _BY HAND._
Damn, you didn't have to boggle my mind, pointing out that the last 2d animated disney film was when I was almost 4 years old 💀
All I wanna say is that if Treasure Planet never failed we wouldn’t be here
So I think I know why the music in this movie sounds so much like generic pop.
Three letters.
Cause they’re too afraid to actually take risks and spend more money, they just want to rip off everyone who’s nostalgic for it
Asha becoming Cinderella's fairy gomother just seems so odd. Like what she got vitiligo like Michael Jackson? Did she just gain an English accent? How'd her hair change textures like that? HER EYE COLOR???
I know right it’s so confusing
When I first saw the animation for Wish, I immediately thought it looked like one of those preschool cartoons that come out on Playhouse Disney. Like, it was cutsie--but not exactly what you'd expect for movie quality...
This film felt like what Disney believed the fans wanted by crossing off a bunch of boxes on a checklist without putting much effort into any of the tasks on the list.
And some Disney fans will absolutely still love this just because it's full of empty references.
The worst part is that the wife was meant to be evil too, so we could’ve had at least one unique thing to praise. But for some reason they scrapped it
@@wyatt778Originally, they're gonna be evil couple which honestly should be the first time for Disney and the Star can shape shifting to be a boy and becomes Asha love interest. Honestly, the storyline with evil couples vs good couples protagonist sound way interesting than whatever the plot of the original movie. But, Disney right now is always playing "Man Bad, Woman Good" card every time.
You know you've made a bad movie when you're losing to Adam Sandler.
They start with the premise "not every wish should be granted" Well what did you ever do to get the power to decide who's wishes are worth granting? "I will grant every wish"
There is soooo much potential there. "I wish my room would clean itself" (Sorcerer's Apprentice results) "I wish I could understand animals" (so many voices that will not stop talking) "I wish for revenge" (that caused a cycle of violence)
Massive chaos results from granting all the wishes and princess is running around trying to fix it but the wish granter can't make wishes or undo granted wishes.
The first time she denies a wish someone asks, "Why do you get to decide who's wishes are worth granting?"
It would piss off young adults but parents are the main audience for Disney and they would love it.
I love how people in the comments are whipping up better plots than what Disney chose
Based of what everyone is saying about the movie, it basically exists as a future kingdom hearts level/plotline
Ngl I can already tell the KH level based off this movie is gonna be good
imagine saying there is limitations to using 2d for camera movements where the beauty and the beast ballroom scene is right there! sure it used a 3d background, but it still looks amazing to this day.
4:44 you're telling me the animators at WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS can't animate camera angles? LMAOOOO
RIGHT! that's so embarrassing to admit as a company!
I think the movie was alri- *IT WAS GONNA BE 2D!?!?*
*LEO IS AN ADAM SANDLER MOVIE!?!?*
When I realized The Princess and the Frog would’ve been a perfect 100 anniversary.
This movie had so much going for it and was disappointing in every way. The only thing I can praise is Chris Pines as Magnifeco
chris pine is the only reason i went to see this movie!
"I let you live here for free and I don't even charge you rent" has the same energy as that line from Shadow the Hedgehog where Sonic's like "We're on our way to the ARK, so I guess that means we're going too"
Disney also hates 2D ANIMATION.
That's why they killed it.
That's why they're "REMAKING" classic movies with ACTORS and awful photorealistic monstrosities.
No, they have plenty of cartoons in their TV department, also they let fox release the Bob's Burgers Movie
@@cradicaDude you can't be f(u) cking serious comparing Simpsons level animation to traditional DISNEY movies animation. In terms of scope or value.
And no Disney owning Fox doesn't make their animations Disney made. And most of their shows use flash or animate and they look awful.
I think all of the cheap nostalgia and the remakes and sequels and member berries have made me utterly disinterested in anything Disney is doing. I have no interest to see this one and I’m glad this review has justified that decision even further.
100 years of magic and it ends with a whimper…
They fumbled so hard i can't help but think theyd have better results by mixing sorcerers apprentice, once upon a studio, and Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny.
The last one of those is not a particularly deep plot. Theres barely any characterization, mostly mr rogers having a "what have i DONE" moment at the end, but lets face it, its still awesome in its own way.
Its shame the movie turned out the way it did cause a story about a wishing star probably could be good unfortunately disney made bad decisions for this movie
Their excuse of “camera limitations” for the traditional animation is so stupid, I vividly remember amazing camera scenes in Aladdin (the magic carpet scene) and Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Actually the last 2D animated movie they made was a Winnie the Pooh movie from 2011 that almost everyone has no knowledge of from what I noticed
Glad I'm not the only one who picked up on that lol
That’s still 12 years with no 2d animation
That's why it was the last one they made lmao 😭
Wish feels like you asked an AI to make a Disney movie, not a 100 year anniversary celebration
Has a animal sidekicks AMOUNG animal side kicks (XD) Its funny, scary, heart warming, and thoughtful all at the same time, and its actually a perfect film
Puss and Boots 2 is what Wish WANTS to be, but is an absolute failure in comparison.
Maybe I'll just go watch that again.
Walt Disney would cry if he could see what these people turned his company into.
Regarding your point about Disney movies making progressively less profit on the nearby future: it's already true, Wish had a 200 million dolar _production_ budget and it's doing quite poorly to the point is losing money
Honestly seeing Disney just completely butcher their 100th Year Anniversary isn’t funny anymore… it’s just sad.
Disney originally had the copyright for Nimona but scrapped it cause the protagonist was gay, and look at how much everyone loved Nimona
