What were your thoughts on Wish? I'd love to hear!
P.S. A quick side note. I'm still working on my voice acting skills, and unfortunately I'm not quite at the level I'd like to be at yet. I wanted to add a spark of passion to this video, but I think I just came across as too angry. This is in no way meant to say anyone who likes these songs is stupid, or that they're not allowed to have their own opinion. In fact, I'd love to hear some arguments for why Wish is actually cleverer than I think. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Honestly, its just pathetic that THIS is what they make to ‘celebrate’ their 100th anniversary. It feels like they made this in a year, judging by the mediocre songs, terrible writing, lacklustre animation and the poor marketing. What a joke.
What bugs me the most about Wish is the Villain…HE. ISN’T. EVEN. A. VILLAIN. He’s the true hero of the story and Disney *desperately* tries to gaslight the audience by making Magnifico seem “evil” because he doesn’t grant everyones wishes… *how…dare he?* But, y’know, this could’ve been excused if his villain song was fire, but it was objectively the worst one Disney has made yet. 🎶I let you live here for free and I don’t even charge you rent🎶 should never be lived down lmao.

Wish was just… There are so many words I want to say about it, but I will throw in one. Wish was atrocious.
Y’know what? I think I’ll write villain songs for the Akatsuki instead. To restore my brain cells from listening to the Wish soundtrack.

This movie reminds me of the golden bolt's video about sega's near collapse during the early twothousands, he mentioned Peter Moore(who tatooed halo 2's release date on his arm), filmed a focus group meeting where asking"if a video game publisher was a relative or friend who would they be"? I quite:-"rockstar was the cool drunk uncle, e.a. was a jock, but what about Sega"?-"Yeah that's your grandad, he used to be cool, but even he can't remember why anymore". That latter one, is current Disney in a nutshell!

I actually like the line “eloquent dancers”. Consider “body language” and dance being the poetic/artistic use of that “language”. Therefore, being an eloquent dancer is someone who is masterful and fluent at “body language”. I don’t think the writers did this with any actual intention, but I don’t completely hate that line.

The way 'love you as one does' worked in the intiial song draft, because it was a love song between a literal STAR and a uman being, so the star wanted to love her like humans do...but when it's no longer the star signing and it's no longer 'love', but 'promise', it' just loses all context and the original meaning. People laugh about the Lin Manuel Miranda thing and him being overused, forgetting Alan Menken composed for NINE Disney films total. And Yeah, LMM does overuse patter and insinuating raps in his songs, but at least he's a decent lyricist and an actual Broadway musical artist. Having a pop writer with zero clue of how to write a story through song was a glaring mistake.
Also. This movie is supposedly set in the 1200s (disney implies "before all other disney movies," But Hercules, Mulan, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone all expressly take place before that era and Lion King, Aladdin, and Moana could all be set before then as well. I digress.)
In the 1200s, there was ZERO concept of "Outer Space" or what stars were, photosynthesis, the Big Bang or any of the other space references made in the movie. The sheer anacronym is so glaring that it drives me nuts.
Moana didn't have a word for "horizon" until after she met Maui, because her people had lost the context. Maui is immortal and has the context for it through wayfinding, and they found a way to express that passing down of knowledge through song in a freaking reprise of How Far I'll Go with subtlety! This movie just bashes you over the head with poorly written overt references that make no sense.

What is their eloquence conveying that regular-ass flowers couldn't?? Were the flowers supposed to start singing their message after that? “I let the people stay here, and I won’t even charge for rent” would fit better. Honestly anything would.
Like they could’ve also done it
“and if people wish to stay here. I don’t even charge for rent.“
It even uses the name of the movie, tying back to wishes and how he doesn’t gaf. How him letting them stay in the kingdom, and taking their wishes is enough in his opinion to fulfill his duty as a great king, and that’s why hes the best. He doesn’t think he needs to do more to be deserving of their love.
It would’ve synced a lot better rhythm wise too
The whole song was him going see how benevolent and kind I am, while showing us that he’s exactly the opposite. But the thing that makes him evil isn’t even that evil. He doesn’t think all wishes should be granted and he’s RIGHT!
They should’ve made the taking wishes ploy extend his life force. So it’s purely for greed and cz he’s power hungry and not an antihero.
It’s a lot more evil than creating a place where everyone’s at peace and the worst thing about it is they don’t have any passions.
Like it’s bad- but it doesn’t justify making him a Disney villain level bad imo

It lets us live here for free and doesn't even charge us rent
It gave us these genes from outer space
It pulls me in like some kind of wind
And I throw caution to every warning sign
What's pain when I look at flowers in the wind
They're such effortless and eloquent dancers
    The leaves eat the sun
Don't ever make that light reverse
    SOLAR!
    I swear on my response
We're here for all your question marks
I'd think this little fun allegory untrue
I don't see how that could happen
    'Cause it gets me excitatory
I'd be the first to volunteer Henry if someone tried to hurt you
Peep the name, 'cause here I are, I'm a star
Ungrateful much? Are you sure you're not the prob?!
I'm not petulant! Felt this, no I haven't
    The disrespect I just underwent
I've seen too many bad things that I can't keep count
But now I'm taking in all the star exposure
The lengths I'll go there's no amount
But if you just see the mushrooms then you'll understand
    It's genetics!
So that's where the balls of gas come from?
No way I could explain it
Boom! Did we just blow your mind?
It might sink in in the morning
But I'll never dream like I used to do

Based on all the reviews, I also think Wish seems mid, but on that same note, Wonka is also kinda mid. But Wonka seems to work better, not just because the songs are better worded and (imo) performed better, but even though it relies on a lot of suspended disbelief, it still seems more coherent and you can follow along without much issue.

Probably my least favorite thing about “This is the thanks I get” is the fact that the chorus just repeats the song’s title 4 times in a row.

She prolly did. As much as I hate the songs, I don't think it's all JM's fault considering Disney changed the plot like 100X. At All Costs was meant to be a love duet, I'm A Star was supposed to be sung by star (not the animals), and the villain was going to be a duo. With all the revisions, I wouldn't be surprised if she resorted to putting vague and banal lyrics out of fear of having to revise again.

As I said, At All Cost could've worked SOO much better as a love song. And I'm gonna add some ideas I thought of when you try to insert this as a love song. This is also gonna be my small take on Star Boy's personality, but the main idea is the chemistry.
2:56 - As awkward the phrasing is, I think it would fit Star Boy well. Since he is a celestial being, it might be his first encounter to such feeling inside. He doesn't know how to describe it well but is trying his best to convey it.
3:22 - Like I said, he's a celestial being, a STAR. Maybe he could've had an internal conflict and desired to be with Asha, to become human and feel all these emotions and make memories alongside her. To LOVE as how one does to their partner. See what I did there?
3:56 4:18 - Asha's feelings towards Star Boy. This feeling is also new to her and is trying to convey it the best she can too. Not only that, but she might be aware that Star Boy might have to go back to where he belongs once he's done helping her. So in a way, she loves him but at the same time it hurts to love him since he'll be leaving soon.
4:52 - Asha's fear of Star Boy getting hurt or being used by Magnifico. He is literally a STAR, something that can grant wishes. If Magnifico is using a book or whatever(never saw the movie) to get the wishes, imagine what he could do if he gets his hands on Star Boy. Not only that but it might be physically taxing on him since he is, in my take, made from wishes. The embodiment of hapiness and desire. Asha's afraid of losing him to Magnifico, so it sounds panicky.
5:21 - I had to look at the rest of the lyrics here.
    "Felt this no I haven't"
Asha trying to understand her feelings and why is she thinking this way but realizes it's all so new and unfamiliar to her.
"I hope it would be all right to stay right here beside you"
Asha wishing to be with Star Boy despite their circumstances.
Were the lyrics separated after "I hope"? Yes, but that doesn't I won't try to connect them.
    And two bonuses for fun:
-In the demo, "Promise as one does" was originally "Love you as one does" and if you read my earlier statement for that line, hits hard.
-"If happiness was a tangible thing, it would be you" In my take I said that Star Boy is the embodiment of hapiness since he's a star. And is in PHYSICAL FORM. And yet he told ASHA that line.
My whole summary for this? I raise my finger high to you Disney, for this could've been a wonderful song that conveyed their emotions and character so well if you didn't f**k up.

Dang you had me with star boys lines, those definitely make a lot more sense in that context. I love that it gives him a feeling of naivete. @@brainless_mastermind honestly the first time I heard this song I was confused on why Asha's verse was so out of place. From a story standpoint, basically me rewriting Wish, it would show how different or nervous Asha is. And no, not the "I'm not like the other girls" or adorkable type, I mean when you're the only who gets you, but no one else does (that feeling hurts). The slight fast pacing of her part is symbolizing her nervousness in dealing with these feeling and to mirror her (rewritten) character, a bit nervous and shy.
But as an aspiring writer, that's my only view on how they could've made sense with her pacing. I am not a musician nor lyricist so i have no idea on how to fix her verse.

At this point, it just feels as if Star Boy was removed from Wish at the last minute. I feel that it is also evident in Asha’s design. Some people didn’t like that her dress was purple, because Rapunzel already had a purple dress. For me though, I think it was meant to be purple because of Star Boy. When you think of a star, you also think of the color yellow, which is a pretty dominant color in his color scheme, and everyone was taught at some point that yellow and purple are complimentary colors.
Basically, I think that Asha’s dress was chosen to be purple because it is the complementary color of yellow, which is Star Boy’s color.
I also cannot help but think that Asha and Star Boy would have probably followed the “opposites attract” romantic trope, considering their colors.

They had such a winning idea here, I mean your subjectmatter is WISHES and STARS! That's the most inherently romantic crap ever! You can make so many lyrical motifs alluding to space imagery. The coldness of the void, light and warmth, the brilliance of the cosmos, stuff about the infinite possibilities of the universe and how every day is something amazing to strive for. You can write so many great songs about people shining or burning and how that contrasts the people and things around them, and all of it would tie back to your central idea effortlessly!
Instead they were like "Here's a Star. It's going to sing about how flowers dance eloquently." Okay...... Cool..... But if this song is going to do fuck-all for the plot then why can't you at least tie it to the others with some coherent theme or imagery?
This hurts extra hard as a fan of Revue Starlight. Not the best anime, but as a musical battle series it does a lot of stuff I love. And one of the biggest things is it motifs itself around wanting to be "the top star" and all the imagery you can have with that. Junna isn't just determined, the lyrics say she's BURNING, which implies strength but also a struggle. She's not "shining" like how the lyrics describe the main lead, trying to become a Star is taking everything she has and the visuals of the lyrics emphasize the recklessness of that. She's not in control of things, she's angry and desperate. Which then gets contrasted with the much stronger Maya Tendou whose lyrics frame herself as a Goddess that 'sits on a heavenly throne' above the others and 'Shines' with brilliance. She's not just above the main lead, she IS celestial. She doesn't WANT to be a Star. In the framing of the song, she JUST IS a Star!
You see what I'm getting at, right? These are all different ways to look at the same idea and by using different personifications for a Star it can frame the characters in different ways.
Why aren't the flowers 'shining' as they move? Why isn't the town 'twinkling' with activity? Why aren't the animals 'aglow' with life as Magnifico 'burns' with delight to contrast all these other beautiful things with his harmful attitude? You have an obvious lyrical motif! USE IT!!!

The demo version of At All Costs WAS a romance song! Instead of "Leave you here? I don't wanna. I wanna *_love you_* as one does. I, I will protect you at all costs." I still think the song isn't great because the imagery in the male voice is positive yet INCREADIBLY _PASSIVE_ where what he's singing about is doing all the work and he's just observing it and wants to continue observing it, which doesn't go along with how STRONG a stance "I will protect you, I will keep you safe, at all costs." And the female verse's lyrics are SO AGGRO (and clunky) of negative imagery and word-assosiation like "pain" "never" "fight" but made positive with more negative words like "wouldn't" "can't." "haven't." that that it juxtaposes the _passiveness_ of the first verse and makes it kinda weird in that dynamic, but then her verse still ends weirdly passive/insecure by saying "I hope it'd be alright to stay right here beside you." Like you just said you'd FIGHT in ways they can't IMAGINE if something even THINKS of hurting them. Then you get all shy like 'oh gosh, would it be okay if I'm beside you. I mean, if it's okay with you, that this 👉👈'
It's SO WEIRD. And as a singer, Ending a song on the word "coSTS" with that CURSED AS HELL "SSSs--T-ssSSS" sound, AND IN A DUET!! That's EVIL! Ss and Ts are the weirdest sounds to end on, and combining them like that is even WORSE because Ss are easy to drop, whistle, sound like a snake on, and Ts have to be HIT, and to get more than one person to hit it at the same time is a conscious effort, and then CAPPING IT OFF WITH ANOTHER S, Oh kill me now. Journey to the Past is fine ending lines with Past, Vast, Last, Fast, because those ending sounds you can make sound good, espeically as a solo. But a ROMANTIC DUET where the sweeping chorus has this horrible stutter ending every other line is HORRIBLE picking.
This song is weird as hell.

One thing that really bothers me about Wish's soundtrack is the fact that the characters almost never reference what the frick they are talking about. With "Welcome to Rosas" and "This Is the Thanks I Get?" being exceptions, no song is allowed to be specific on its wording. In "This Wish", for example, Asha wishes for "something better than this". In "At All Costs", neither Asha nor Magnifico ever say the word "wish". Without the context of the movie, you would never know what they are promising to protect; it actually sounds like they are singing to each other.
Even when you look at Disney's previous musical, Encanto, it wasn't like that. Isabela sings about growing plants because she just discovered she can make more than flowers. "Waiting on a Miracle" references the powers of some of the Madrigal's. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" gives us exposition about a character who hasn't shown up yet, foreshadows the importance of his prophecy, and also explores other characters, like Pepa, Dolores and Isabela. ALL IN ONE SONG. The only song you could argue contains generic lyrics is "Surface Pressure".
Disney clearly wanted the soundtrack of Wish to be removed from the context of the movie. They wrote the most generic lyrics ever in an attempt to make people connect with the songs. But it's so weird from a writing standpoint when the characters in a musical don't actually sing about what is going on in the plot.

    • @Moocow2003
      @Moocow2003 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

Even Surface Pressure has a mention of pressure coming from her family.. that's more than Wish gets. Also I don't think some less specific songs in a musical are a bad thing, I just think there's gotta be a balance. I ADORE I See The Light from Tangled but it wouldn't be as strong of a song if we didn't also get plot specific songs like the Mother Knows Best reprise near it.

they seemed to have been going for two things at once- super qUiRKy modern pop music with elegant and dreamy like words which ended up mixing terribly together. they shouldve gone either full pop modern or old classic, and tbh i think they shouldve gone classic for their 100 yr anniversary and bcuz we're talking abt *stars* that are supposed to be these ethereal, gorgeous and bright beings.

I keep thinking about Taylor Swift when people talk about generic pop songs. Like even her most generic songs like "Shake it Off" has some kind of story element. "My ex man brought his new girlfriend..." Like that's more specificity than Wish's whole soundtrack.

The song would be alr in that instance, but making it so that they were singing about the wishes is the stupidest thing ever, and this movie honestly made the whole concept of wishing super cringey and corny. Even though I don't like him, I understand why people prefer Starboy to regular Star in their rewrites. At least a love song between the him and Asha makes more sense.

@@brainless_mastermind I have looked into the German version of "This Wish" and while the cadence is still bad (they were bound by the original song), the lyrics are more coherent with the original meaning left intact and they corrected "throw caution to every warning sign" as "Und ich schlage jede Warnung in den Wind" (throw warning/caution to the winds).
"Is this the Thanks I Get" also corrected "I'm passionate, I'm not petulant" to "Bin ehrgeizig, ich beschwer mich nicht" ("I'm ambitious, I don't complain") and "A potion a spell a summon a curse, anything to make that light reverse" to "Ein Mittel, ein Bann, ein Schwur oder Fluch? Irgendwas, damit man dieses Buch" ("a remedy, a ban, an oath, or a curse, anything to make this book work"). But unfortunately they kept the "I let you live here for free and don't even charge you rent" line ("Ihr wohnt alle umsonst hier nicht mal Miete zahlt ihr dafür")
"You're a Star" unfortunately couldn't be saved. The song is only slightly less incoherent in German than it was in English. It corrected the "eloquent dancers" line to "Warum lassen Blumen sich vom Wind wie Tänzer wiegen und tragen?" (Why do flowers let themselves be swayed and carried by the wind like dancers?) and changed that awful "we're all shareholders" line to "Denn wir teilen diese Welt und sind ein Teil vom Ganzen" ("Because we share this world and are part of the whole.") The "allegory" line becomes "Hier ist ein kleines Gleichnis zu Ende Da klatsch ich gleich in die Hände" (here is where my parable ends, I clap my hands). It also added new mistakes like - "We're here for all your question marks" became "the good is within your grasp" and "see that's where all the balls of gas come from" became "it doesn't surprise me the gas sometimes smells."
So basically the Germans tried to save the soundtrack, but even they could only do so much.

I just listened to the first song on the soundtrack. Ohhh boy.
I’m a worship leader at my Church, and one thing that really irks me when choosing songs is how the Christian music industry, and really modern songwriting in general, has just completely given up on hard rhymes. The sound of mismatching consonants is absolutely grating on my cochlear nerves! I’ve asked fellow songwriters about this in the past, and the excuse I hear is that hard rhymes make the lyrics “too predictable.” People, it may be difficult, but no form of art is effortless.

Taking a page out of one of my favorite musicals:
      “Diomedes will lead the charge
      Agamemnon will flank the guards.”
”Charge” and “Guards” don’t rhyme perfectly, but when it’s close enough, the listener doesn’t even notice bc it checks by in their brain.
I’ll take slant rhymes over not trying at all. “This Wish”’s seeming allergy to rhyming obliterates any sort of structure the song would have and it doesn’t stick in your head at all. It sounds like Asha is literally making up the song as she goes.

It’s obvious these lyrics were made for two people speaking to each other and not two people singing about an inanimate object.
I honestly can’t even enjoy the second half of the song since for some reason Asha’s voice takes over as the dominant sound instead of a duet (is it supposed to be a duet?) and she’s just singing in the same note (pitch? Idk singing terms) when she started with so much variety.
Anyway, loved this video! Made me feel very justified lol!

In the demo version, it is more of a love song, they just changed some lyrics. Which is a weird thing to do

11:30 excitatory is actually a word, but it’s not used correctly. What do ya know.

"And throw caution to...." My brain stopped working at that point. And apparently mine still functioned longer than the lyricist.

“I let you live here for free, and I don’t even charge you rent” made me lose the last few remaining brain cells I had.

You know, in the trolls movie one of the characters say the word "fantastamazing" often.
That word makes more sense than "excitatory" and "revelatory"
    What the fu-
Also who the fuc is Henry

Revelatory is a real word (just means revealing or imparting new knowledge)! However, in the song it means nothing, because nothing has actually been revealed. Excitatory is also a real word, but it means to cause excitement, and no person would ever use it when the word exciting is right there.

Hi! I know I'm super late and you probably already looked it up, but just in case you didn't, I thought I should tell you that Henry is just a random name.
In "This is the thanks I get?!" the king says, "I'd give the clothes off Benito's back," as well as, "I'd be the first one to volunteer Henry!"
Magnifico is basically just saying that he'll make someone else do the work and take the credit.
The line out-of-context in this video was so confusing. Like, was there even a Henry in this movie? I had no idea it was just a random name at first.

8:55 the only time I heard a song that uses “Question Mark” in s song was Shinedown’s song “The Dream” from Us and Them (2005) and it not even a song that someone’s singing, they are just speaking the words out as intro to their next track “Heroes”
