Seriously. If the VA would have said "The main character has lost touch with her family roots and that's why she's making obvious mistake when she talks spanish" and boom! All the critics would have died down because it wasn’t much at first, just some point a bit icky.

I don't even know why she didn't say that to begin with?? Like in the show there's even a future episode where the characters recap all the songs of the show so far and Tater's cousins correct her by saying its "oigan primos" not "oye primos". That episode was recorded before the intro released so.. why couldn't she just say that?

I think the moment that sealed Primos’ fate is the fact that the show uses the incorrect version of Primos in the theme song and when pointing them out, the show’s VA acted like the people pointing out legitimate incorrect Spanish were trying to troll her. It’s like people are so worried about protecting their political egos they don’t even register when they make a major mistakes in representation, especially when it’s not even their culture. 💀

My thing is: ok, spanish is a language forced on indigenous communities by way of Spanish conquistadors.
Unless you strive to learn or revitalize an indigenous language instead: you're just touting personal ignorance. Regardless of the origin, its a lingua franca for latin american countries which means people speak it _constantly_ . Beyond that, indigenous languages have mixed with Spanish to create regional dialects, creoles, pigeon languages that are unique to their areas and speak to the resilience of indigenous cultures.
You erase all of that when you just plug your ears and go "spanish bad".

I don't know how to explain it but it feels stereotypical and sanitized, the poorly spoken spanish and the stereotype of the Latin family who always are there for eachother.
Returning to the sanitized representation, I feel like Mexico it's just a difficult country to adapt to in a certain way, our culture is bloody, beautiful, painful and funny, terrible and great things happen at the same time here and that feeling it's just hard to capture.

I do agree with you on that and I’m a Mexican who is a first generation of my family to be born in the US. Every time there is a show about Latinos living in a small house in LA where there’s like 20 of them crammed inside just annoys me. It is true that some families have that but it doesn’t mean we’re all together or happy about it like they are in the show. Most of the time you just have no choice because of your financial state or still having to wait on getting your papers and it’s better to stay with family than be on the streets. There’s a lot of challenges which I grew up experiencing and knowing them when I was in a house like that (and NOT in LA where the family always lives at for some reason ) not to mention how it’s so stereotypical to have the kids not know proper Spanish when there’s plenty of families who do teach their kids to speak Spanish and do it all day at home. It’s just lazy writing that this show does like all the rest that have aired before it.

I went to a class for arts and they brought in a worker at Disney who made both backgrounds and prop designs in animation, she worked for The Casagrandes and showed us some of the examples she made in the show like vehicles and buildings and even some concepts for backgrounds. She was so cool and showed us how we can build a portfolio and tips in the animation industry, it was great!
But she also told us that she would be working on the upcoming animated show Primos, which NONE of us knew about. She was able to give very brief information on it and what she said made it sound like a cute passion project for the Hispanic community and discovering who you are as an individual in this little world. The toddler character wasn’t the only kid with a problematic name. The unibrow gremlin is called Chacha, which here in Mexico is a despective term levied against house maids.
There’s also the ongoing issue that yet again, the unibrow character is shown to be a gross, unruly creature instead of anything else, if the leaked episodes are any indication. American media is obsessed with unibrows as an ugly trait, and even with the sudden rise in interest in foreign media, there’s a concerned effort to ignore the plight and activism of people with this features; in this case specifically, ignoring Frida Khalo’s political statement about Latin American women and AFAB people with unibrows and hairy bodies.
It’s kind of baffling that there’s so many tone-deaf decisions in this show considering how sanitized Disney likes to operate as a brand. Where were the Mexican and Latino sensitivity staff? How did no one catch stuff like “Terremoto Heights” and the fact that the show features a constant yellowish sky..?

Yet Squilliam Fancyson from Spongebob is viewed by everyone in the show & by the viewers as the most handsome & successful character in the series(the exact opposite of Squidward) and people love his unibrow. Just like how we call the Fat Controller from Thomas the Tank Engine by his real name "Sir Topham Hatt" even though the Fat Controller is a title of importance, not an insult(even though fat has been used on other characters as an insult, but that's beside the point.), yet Rolly in 101 Dalmatians the Series & Manny from Ice Age are both called fat AS an insult by other characters. I'm going to say it as a native of LA and being kind of fitting in for what the show is aimed for (a hispanic, LA native that can not speak spanish and knows only broken words/phrases)
Primos didn't offend me even through the controversies (except Cuquita because like come on that shouldve been a scrapped name during the initial conception)
I saw what the creator was trying to accomplish, even on what people were criticizing. Some of the criticisms were nothings to me such as the large scale families, "Nacho" (which I can confirm is a nickname for those named Ignacio), and even Terremoto Heights's name just being tone deaf at worse to me since the creator was probably more focused on LA earthquakes, not Mexican ones that are the ones that tend to be a lot more deadlier. LA earthquakes are more just a startling inconvenience for us but the only deadly LA one in recent history was probably Northridge like thirty years ago. But again; didn't initially bother me but can see how people would feel a little iffy on that one
But what the voice actor said, man. I'll be more of a hot take; I can kinda see what she was trying to say of the show being more for the outliers of those who dont speak spanish properly and how its more of the flaw of the protagonist to explain the intro being incorrect spanish but like, man, did she say it in the worst way possible
It sucks a little because I like the idea of the show to represent what some call the "no sabo kids" because hell I would have loved that growing up, speaking as one. Sadly its just another show where the reputation is too damaged for anyone to take seriously or maybe even salvage which I find a little unfortunate

      That's not the point.
And there is some genuine discourse to be had regarding the idea that Mexicans have been robbed of the opportunity to decide if they wanted to participate in their own ancestors' culture, and have been stripped of a degree of inherent entitlement to the continent that being perceived as a native person does...
But that "entitlement" (In the legitimate sense, not the colloquial, negative sense) only exists if you're in an hyperbolically "progressive" bubble that disregards all the systemic racism against the Native People of the Americas, and she was dropping some serious undertones that Mexicans without some deep connection to their ancestors are, like, missing out on something, or, whatever. Which just feels like when people say you're incomplete as a person because you don't go to their specific church or something.
She took some ideas that could have some merit if you had some quality academic discourse and ran off the deep end. A true pseudointellectual.
Like how representation is good, but this show? WTF. We all know this aint how its supposed to go

I feel like it'd be fine to have tater speaking broken Spanish in the show to have that conversation of feeling disconnected from your roots, something I think the ghost and Molly Mcgee actually did very well. But having broken Spanish be the HOOK of your theme song is just a bad idea, because it's gonna be what sticks in kids minds and they're going 5i start thinking that it is proper Spanish! They're going to think they're learning good Spanish! If it was just tater maybe it'd be okay, but all her cousins are also shouting broken Spanish.

It's another show set in LA, because modern "writers" (or at least the ones the remaining networks hire) simply do not know of any other place on earth. Period! And as a result it limits their storytelling potential.
For example, If I were to redraft Star Vs. I would have had Star and Marco's family living in western Ohio. I also would have Marco's family recently moved into the area from LA. This way, while Marco would still serve as Star's guide to earth culture and customs, they would both bond over the shared experience of living in new place. Plus, with the abundance of corn in western Ohio, Star would at least have a (very potent) comfort of home.

The only thing I have to say in defense of the show is that the names, while sounding offensive, come from normal Spanish names.
Nacho and Nachito both come from Ignacio, which was also the name of the guy that invented nachos and named them after himself: Ignacio (or Nacho) Anaya. Nacho is a diminutive of Ignacio.
Cuquita, which is slang for 😺 in South American countries, comes first from Cuca, which has the same meaning there and comes from Piluca, diminutive of the name Pilar, which used outside of names means pillar, referring to Our Lady of the Pillar.
All that said, I am not very sure if the creators of the show dug that deep to find Soanish names.
Edit: I stopped the video just before he made the case on Nacho and wrote all this. The Cuquita thing still stands.

Nacho is real nickname, but it's that fact that there is literally TWO male characters named NachitO and NachitA. That's like someone made a show about a bunch of black kids. And there's two boy characters called lil Tyrone and lil Tyrona. Which why it's offensive and also doesn't even make sense grammatically.

The best part about all the controversy surrounding Primos was that, in the midst of all this, a Peruvian cement company released a 12-minute short called "Protegiendo los sueños de Sol" (Protecting Sol's dreams), which featured Sol Segura, a 10-year-old Peruvian girl wanting to build a refuge for street puppies in her city. Despite being, in essence, just a cement ad used as well to spread awareness about the importance of safe building, people loved it. The original video already has 3 million views. It wasn't a response to Primos, because the Peruvian company had been working on the short for some years, but it being released in the midst of the controversy with Primos made people compared the two and people preferred the 12-minute cement ad than the average Disney Channel series. The first, despite being only just a cement ad, had more passion and dedication than the Disney Channel series, which, having watched the leaked pilot last year, I can only say it looked painfully average and uninspired, and not even the character dynamics could save it - it seemed like a bad copy of Good Luck Charlie, Stuck in the Middle and The Loud House.
