The Olympus OM-D E-M5 (2012) was a gamechanger, reshaping what the future of mirrorless cameras should be, and demonstrating what Micro Four Thirds is truly capable of. Olympus did many right moves with the E-M5, and I am exploring them one by one in this video.

I have an original EM5 . It is a " WAR HORSE " !!! It can take anything you or the weather can dish out ! And , in " Super Fine " mode and a few custom tweaks , you will get images as good as any camera for all around shooting ! Love it . I have four other cameras currently and this is one that I would NEVER think of selling or trading !

My original OM-D E-M5 is still my main camera. I bought it in May 2014. It has travelled with me all over the world and the weather sealing has been used constantly. Some people say it is a gimmick and you can shoot with any other cameras in these environments. I say B.S.
Try shooting for a day at locations such as the Iguazu Falls in Brazil/Argentina without a weather sealed camera. I doubt it would survive.
My OM-D E-M5, no problems. Still working perfectly today.
Also, the 5 axis IBIS is definitely a game changer. I never carry a tripod on my travels, because I don't need one for 99% of my shots.
Also, I carry 6 lenses, from 7mm all the way to 300mm in a small and light bag.
I also have an Olympus Pen E-PM2 as my B camera, which I carry in the same bag just in case I need it.
    Love the MFT system.

@@STORIEDAMAAN There are lots of good prime lenses to use with MFT cameras (Olympus and Panasonic). To recommend a prime lens it is important to now what focal length you use the most. I have a few 3 primes:
      - Lumix 20mm f1.7
      - Lumix 25mm f1.7
      - Olympus 45mm f1.8
From all the above, for my style of shooting, the Lumix 20mm f1.7 is my most used lens. It is almost constantly glued to my Olympus OM-D E-M5 (and looks very good). The Lumix 25mm f1.7 is a bit too tight for my taste, but is also a great cheap lens. For portraits, you can't go wrong with the Olympus 45mm f1.8 (or the equivalent Lumix 42.5mm f1.7). There are also some Macro primes as well. So, again, it all depends on what you like shooting.
I suggest looking at the images you've taken with the kit lens and see what is the range of focal length you use the most. My first prime will be something closer to the most used focal length, but with a wider aperture (f2.8 or lower), that fits in my budget.

I was carrying heavy Nikon digital SLRs and lenses when I used to shoot photos for the newspaper I worked at. After a while I just got sick of carrying all of that, and I sold it all and bought an E-M5. I couldn't believe how great it was to use something so lightweight and powerful. The only downside to getting the E-M5 was that I didn't have much need to use a flash anymore so I quit flash photography.

The E-M5 was my main camera since 2013 and is still perfectly usable today, you really do not miss much compared to the newest cameras. I gave it over to my daughter this year who is having a lot of fun with it and I am now using the E-M1 which is also old, but a step up in several areas and can by bought dirt cheap these days.

I bought my EM5 in 2013. It definitely was a game changer for me. I didn’t want a full sized pro camera, and I wanted something better than the compact camera I had been using. It had to have interchangeable lenses and fast auto focus. It also had to be small and light, and the EM5 had the same feeling as my old OMD 1. Finally the EVF was my final requirement. And while initially I was a bit overwhelmed by the menu system, once I became comfortable with it, it gave me incredible control over the many features of the camera. On top of that it was an incredible value. I still shoot with it today.

In Korea every male citizen has to attend Korea army and leave their home for 21 mounts obligatorily and sacrifice their precious time

I just stumbled on your video. Thank you for making it, firstly. I just received this exact camera in the mail today. Let me back up, my father passed away, and he was a professional photographer for many years. I apprenticed under him back in the days of real film, for about seven years at that time, I could shoot a wedding by myself. I stopped photography once I joined the military in 1999 and I haven’t looked back until very recently. I inherited my fathers old D 300 which sparked me to get this Olympus camera and I’m excited and scared to get back out there and do this again.

Hi Robin -- hope you are well! Here we are in 2023 and I have been shooting with the E-M5. It's a wonderful camera, low-mileage bodies are unbelievably inexpensive. We were in the UK in November, and I purchased a super clean E-M5 body with the 14-42 zoom at London Camera Exchange's Bath retail location for under 150gbp! Amazing. That E-M5 and E-M1 are such great choices for dedicated hobbyists.

I've just got one of these (from a popular auction site!) with a low shutter count, for a very nice price and so far I'm really pleased with it. Already have the E-M10 and that 12-50mm lens but yes, the weather sealing tempted me. I can't afford the latest models and I think what was good then, is good now - so I look forward to giving this a road test!

In 2013 I picked up an E-M5 and shot it alongside my FF Nikon gear (that I had been shooting with for 7 years by then) for several months. As a side note, I doubt I would have done it if it had not had the EVF. It really is a helpful feature. Can't imagine making any change without an EVF on the camera. The experience and great images I got with the Oly got me to the point where I switched from FF to MFT. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Robin.

Robin I had an Olympus OMD EM5 before. It was my first mirrorless camera. I agree it was a game changer. One thing I remember is its portability, as compared to the one that it replaced, the Canon 450D. My first lens was the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 mark i (I did not took the kit lens option). I also remember how sharp the Olympus 45mm f1.8 on this camera. Compared with the camera that I have today, I do miss the image stabilization feature on such a compact body.

I hope you can make a similar video about the E-M1. Like many others, I first bought an E-M5 and then an E-M1 and enjoy both. I had some superb Zuiko lenses made for the Olympus DSLR cameras and the E-M1 allowed me to continue using them. I still enjoy using the excellent, fully weather sealed 75-200 f/2.8-3.5 Zuiko with an adapter today and along with the 12-40 Pro lens I have I am equipped for just about every situation. When I want to go lighter I still have the original E-M5 which still is a charmer.

Great video! Proud to use Olympus OMD EM5-1. May I ask something technical about how to set this EM5 for vlogging, i find it flickering when i use LED lights. I've adjusted the shutter speed, but neither 1/50 or 1/60 eliminate the flickering. Any solution?

I bought the EM5 about a year ago because they go for a steal these days. So cheap. I'm so glad I did because it shoots professional quality shoots with great IBIS and thats even by 2019 standards. Cheap good quality lenses also a big bonus. The only thing I wish it had was focus peaking for my adapted canon FD lens but even then its not that big a deal. Its definitely one of the best buys on the second hand market. Thanks for the video! I enjoyed it very much. 👍

Similar story with purchasing an EM5 for cheap, such a great camera! In regards to focus peaking there is no standard setting but there is an excellent work around which is just as good. Search up 'focus peaking omd em5' and there are some good tutorials.

I still have this camera. A reliable and joyful to use unit. Sure it is a little outdated now. The rubber surrounding the EVF fell off one day when I was in a mountain, noticed when I got back home lol. Oh well. The image quality is still very good, especially if you upload only on social media such as FB and IG. I have a question, Robin, and everyone else reading the comment and willing to reply. Is it better to buy a new body (I really like the EM1 mk2), wait for new Olympus OMD EM5(mk3) or EM1(mk3), or just invest in lens? My lens collection so far is: 14-42mm kit lens, 40-150mm f4/f5.6 and 60mm F2.8 macro. Thanks!

    Please do the EM1 video.
There were a lot of features on that camera I wish they carried over to the MkII & EMX like the ability to use the VF4 and to a lesser extent a rear panel like the mark 1 or like the Fuji cameras. For stills the flip out rear screen is not as good as the screen on the EP5 for my use anyway.
With the current size of their flagship cameras the extra space required to use the VF4 is insignificant and better opens up the camera for macro use.

Need your advice for b&w photography.
1-Should I take a photo in colors then filter it in PP for b&w or just take a photo in monotone feature menu. Which is better?
    TQ

    • @AlexRamosDrTaz
      @AlexRamosDrTaz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

My answer? Take it in color using JPEG+RAW super fine. Adjust the RAW in camera, or process it outside via PC/mobile device using your favorite postprocessing app. If you shoot JPEGs only, make sure you have all noise reduction turned off and do the same. (I keep noise reduction turned off on my E-M10 III as using the built in art filters appears to clean up some of the noise when processing JPEG/RAW photos.)
Otherwise test your JPEG settings to achieve the look you want, before extensively shooting B&W.

The M5 is too good to replace. That was and still is its main issue. New versions have cooler features and more buttons and customization of course. But I can't bring myself to hand over that much money when I feel like I got slightly ripped off by lower build quality. Build quality for me is value, and 8 years after it was made, admittedly beat up and battered, this camera still goes out with me all the time. Mountains, ocean, snow, scorching heat. Bring it on. Never missed a beat.
