So many great Beat em ups Bring me back so many nostalgic memories, For the most part I think they did a really good job with most of these games especially as The master system only had a 2 Button control pad Which I probably didn't appreciate too much back then Playing mega drive versions of a lot of these games As 3 buttons makes a huge difference And I would say the games are superior But older me has to be fair and say of course The mega drive was more powerful And I've really come to appreciate What time manage to achieve With these games on the master system And have a lot of fun playing some of these titles nowAnd have a lot of fun playing some of these titles now, Great job mate
Nice list! Like you already know, I've never owned an SMS (it will happen one day), so I've never played any of those games. But what I can tell is that the games seem to look better graphically than their NES counterpart (for the ones that were released on both systems, that is)! I've played a ton of Renegade on the NES back in the day, so I really want to try that SMS version! Great video and keep up the good work!
Hopefully watching some of these SMS videos makes you want to get one in your library! Renegade is so dope on the SMS I had no idea it was on the NES, that's awesome that you played it!
I also truly love Running Battle and Zillion 2 Tri formation, as two absolute Sega Master Classics, hard to find in my day,and assumedly Eve moreso nowadays.
The SMS definitely seemed to have a decent amount of beat-em-ups, granted some were inferior ports of Genesis versions, but some seemed cool (like Running Battle, Kung Fu Kid, and Vigilante). Cool topic man!
I would stay far away from Running Battle as it was featured on my top 10 worst master system games of all time haha. Thanks for checking this out, GCG.
In the same way RASTAN was a Conan game they couldn’t get the license for, BLACK BELT was actually a Fist of the North Star game. They could not obtain the license in time and the game was reskinned as “Back Belt”.
Ooh, this one seems to be popping off already! Congrats! 1:26 that's too bad. I was willing to do a lot of repetition as a kid, but repeat bosses is rough 2:10 huh, yeah that's pretty innovative 2:40 so interest how much better cartoony graphics age than graphics that were trying to look realistic 3:24 I never played this on SMS, but I did play the NES version. This one looks better though. I mostly played DD2 on NES though, so I'm only slightly familiar with the first one. 4:40 I did always love these sorts of games when it would let you steal their weapons 5:13 Tiger is so excited about this one! It's his favorite game!! lol. It is interesting that it came to SMS. Doesn't look like a great port. 6:22 too bad this port was limited to 1 player. It looks like a pretty solid port for such an ambitious title! 6:50 again, 1 player only. Too bad. That really does drastically reduce the fun. These beat-em-up games were always best with a friend. 7:28 I like the style of this one. It has such a different graphic vibe than the other ones of this era 8:30 I could see that. Looks like it doesn't have any 3D depth. Some of the graphics look really cool 9:12 I get that people were just excited to have access to the game, but no multiplayer is really sad. 9:55 this port looks surprisingly solid! I'm impressed! Another excellent list for the history books!
Agreed, I was hoping for some more unique bosses. I loved when the game shifted with the boss fights. Very cool. I think Double Dragon on the NES is more well-regarded. I still enjoy the SMS version though. Me too, picking up weapons and seeing what damage they inflict was always fun! Can you blame me? Look how BAD the frame rate is haha Golden Axe is an awesome game on the Genesis... not so much on the SMS. Same with Alien Storm! Renegade is pretty polished, I'd love to get it into my collection. Good eye on the 3D depth aspect, probably another reason it flunked. Agreed, you need multi-player with beat 'em ups... it's way more fun with a friend. Thanks for watching, Cynic! Would be cool to play the SMS with you someday.
I loved this genre when I was a kid. Perhaps not as polished as other genres but there was joy to be found once you learned the game. Highlights include Vigilante, Golden Axe, My Hero and Streets of Rage-obviously!
I have the hugest nostalgia woodie for Kung Fu Kid, i think this game is a definite improvement over Kung Fu in every aspect of the gameplay fluidity, as well as its audio ambiance and art style. Fantastic and Unsung.
Solid video here my guy. AlTURD beast was a disaster on Genesis and looks even worse here. Still really cool to see them port SOR2. My hero was tough as nails at your house but I still love the cover
My Hero is f'n difficult! I can only play 10 minutes until I get mad and turn it off. Both Streets of Rage are good examples that you don't need Playstation nor Xbox graphics to have a good and fun game to play. Great video!
It’s great the Master System has so many great beat em ups, definitely missed off dynamite dux dude but will let you off. I would say double dragon is great for the music due to the fm ❤ and streets of rage 1 is right up there as the best.
A fine selection of brutal brawlers. But nobody should be tortured by Altered Beast on any system 😮😂 I'll keep my eyes peeled for Running Battle, but you don't see it often here in Scotland 🤷♂️
Well done buddy and do let me know if you need any help finding anything over here. I could be wrong but I think you might have missed dynamite dux. It's such a great little game and definitely worth a mention in my opinion. Streets of Rage is probably the best in my opinion and it's a shame the second game didn't live up the first. Great to see more master system videos as always.
You've been too good to me already sending me some PAL exclusive games. There's quite a few on my list that I'd love to get into the collection. You are right, I totally missed Dynamite Dux! That was an error on my end. I'll have to check that one out. Thanks for watching, Oli!
Hey there! Appreciate you watching and giving a comment. I'll give input on any of the games I've played in these lists like I did with My Hero and Black Belt. These types of videos I try and just be informative and let the viewer judge the game for themselves and decide whether they want to play them or not. I do have many Master System videos coming out this year where I share my personal views and opinions on the games. Thanks for watching!
I would rate them as follows: My Hero 7/10, Black Belt 8/10, Kungfu Kid 6/10, Double Dragon 7/10, Vigilante 7/10, Altered Beast 4/10, Golden Axe 8/10, Alien Storm 7/10, Renegade 8/10, Running Battle 6/10, Streets of Rage 9/10, Streets of Rage 2 7/10. I own them all, and completed most :)
What if I told you that somebody was trying to make a version of the TMNT arcade game from 1989 for the Sega Master System hardware? Well, the prototype demo exists.
I love Kung Fu Kid. It's not amazing, but it's just quintessentially a Master System game. The color use, the sound, the sprites... it's exactly the kind of thing that I picture when I think Master System. Black Belt looks weird because it was originally a Fist of the North Star game in Japan. They changed Kenshiro to a generic guy in a gi and switched up the enemy sprites just enough to not be copyright infringement, but they still have the Mad Max look, which just makes for a strange looking game. I like Vigilante as well, though I prefer the Turbografx port. Kinda like Double Dragon, where it's good and I like that it has the 2 player, but it just feels, looks, and sounds worse than the NES port. I don't own the Streets of Rage ports. I have all of the Genesis versions, and while it's a fun novelty that they were ported to the Master System and Game Gear, I don't have enough inner collector to want to get the worse ports just to have them and likely never play them. If I was a kid and they were my only option, I'dve likely happily enjoyed them, but as a crotchety 44 year old, I'm just gonna play my Genesis and Mega Drive copies.
I've always thought the My Hero guy looks like Donald Trump which is ironic since he's America's hero 😂 Also I don't think I could ever play Altered Beast with how choppy it is, it would get on my nerves

Thanks for watching! There are a lot of great games on this list. I miss classic beat 'em ups.
I always loved double dragon
Great choice!
Great video, I love Brawlers and the Master System is something I never had.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it and brawlers can be very exciting and fun.
It has been well over 30 years since I owned the Sega Master System..along with many games on this list...
I bet you got some great memories with it! There's some awesome games for it.
Me too dude, Nice
I liked and subscribed to your channel. It’s very good.
Thank you very much! I've got lots of SMS content coming soon.

I legit never knew that Rastan was a Conan game although I can clearly see it now! Thanks for the info.
Yeah that tracks
Ooh, this one seems to be popping off already! Congrats!

I loved this genre when I was a kid. Perhaps not as polished as other genres but there was joy to be found once you learned the game. Highlights include Vigilante, Golden Axe, My Hero and Streets of Rage-obviously!
It was just simple fun! Lots of great games in this genre. Thanks for watching!
My Hero's flying kick sound effect and music are tattooed into my brain from a kid playing it
That game is so tough! I do love the boss fight in it though.
I have the hugest nostalgia woodie for Kung Fu Kid, i think this game is a definite improvement over Kung Fu in every aspect of the gameplay fluidity, as well as its audio ambiance and art style. Fantastic and Unsung.
That sunset in my hero is gorgeous 🌅
One of my favorite settings in any master system game. A true work of art!
Streets of rage was the one 👍😁 loved playing that as a kid! - Chris
You had great taste as a kid!
Awesome video my dude. Love the intro 🔥
Thanks for watching! The intro is one of my favorite things that I've made.
Solid video here my guy. AlTURD beast was a disaster on Genesis and looks even worse here. Still really cool to see them port SOR2. My hero was tough as nails at your house but I still love the cover
Even Cherry was like.... "what's wrong with Altered Beast?" LOL, so you know if she can notice how bad it is... it must be.
Double Dragon is a masterpiece. And was a phenomenon when it was released
Love to hear it! That was a lot of fun.
I bought Running Battle back in the 90s for about £10. Game was legitimately brutal 🇬🇧💪
Haha I'd still like to try it but I've heard of how.... "great" it is.
The 80’s were great. Everybody kidnapping your girl friend. But you are a kung Fu/karate master. Lol😅
What a time to be alive! We need to bring that era back 😁
My Hero is f'n difficult! I can only play 10 minutes until I get mad and turn it off.

I totally whiffed on Dynamite Dux, good catch. Street of Rage is a classic, and Double Dragon can be a lot of fun. Thanks for watching!

I'll keep my eyes peeled for Running Battle, but you don't see it often here in Scotland 🤷♂️
Oh my goodness, Altered Beast is sooooo bad on the SMS. The frame rate is a joke. Thanks for watching, GP!!
Wow. Not even two minutes in and your review of my hero was as brutal as the game play 😂
That has to be one of the most difficult SMS games!! It is crazy hard.
My favorites are Double Dragon , Kungfu Kid and Black Belt .
Some great choices! Black Belt was very unique
Loved double dragon and the Alex kidd games
Awesome games!
Well done buddy and do let me know if you need any help finding anything over here.

I think we can all agree with the 4/10 score for Altered Beast haha
Running batlle complete for 25 euros plus ports on Vinted.
Oh wow that's a lot more affordable than I thought! Thanks
@TigerChainsawVideoGames no problem

Loved reading this! Thank you for watching.
Black belt is really fist of the north star
That is true!
Dinamite Dux e Golden Axe, Batman Returns deveriam estar na lista!
Excellent games
1:06 In this game, is there a reason why the thug want to kidnap her?
That's a good question haha. I'm not sure they needed any reasons back in the 80s haha
I've always thought the My Hero guy looks like Donald Trump which is ironic since he's America's hero 😂
Also I don't think I could ever play Altered Beast with how choppy it is, it would get on my nerves
Haha he does look like Donny T! Altered Beast is super choppy, I didn't much care for the genesis version of it.
Hokuto no Ken is better than Black Belt. *
I'll have to check that one out
