Sega Master System was the version I had, and played it to death. It's a bit on the easy side but very fun and mostly accurate to the arcade as you say. Most importantly though it allows for 2 player simultaneous play, which many home versions do not.
I remember getting Double Dragon for the NES after playing it in the arcade. I was so bummed. It's not terrible, but the Master System version was so much better.
Another nice video, thanks. Small oversight, as for the Commodore C64, there were two versions for the Amstrad CPC. You showed the worst of the two, the other is a little less beautiful but much more playable. It's even one of my favorite games on Amstrad CPC.
Very old. I tried to give you a head's up when I said the CPC and C64 had four ports between them, but I thought straight up asking for it and the Zeebo version would be getting greedy. Maybe a follow up on CPC, if you ever check out other ports? I'm dying to know if it lives up to the glowing write up in The Double Dragon Dojo?
@juststatedtheobvious9633 yup. The Zeebo port was also great. I will of course. Follow up many of these videos with modern versions using the same hardware.
The Spectrum deserves way more credit than it gets. Ignore the colour clash and the sprites are incredible. This applies to many more games too. Robocop, Target Renegade, Chase HQ, HKM, all unbelievable.
Haven't played it but the version looked... slow. There's a reason Technos brawlers were so beloved on Famicom/NES, they were some of the fastest games with chibi sprites zooming around the screen with running attacks and the like.
This is great, please compare other Technos games! My fav is Renegade/Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun, it had amazing Famicom port with same chibi art as River City Ransom, also there are SO many versions of Super Dodgeball and remakes.
Haha. I didn't realise these videos would be as popular and controversial as they have been. Make sure to watch tonight's releasing at 8pm. Welcome aboard 😀
Once again I agree with you Jamie. Although I prefer the original arcade version. There's no doubt that the GBA port is the best. Thanks for the video.
the DGA is the best for me so far. I often play it again and again on my GBA emulator. If they could only make the graphic better these days it would be the best DD1 ever!
The Commodore 64 version of DOUBLE DRAGON ruined my Christmas the year it came out, how they got away with releasing that garbage was a disgrace. But what a game the arcade version was.
The nes version was hampered by the lack of two players, but it was awesome in its own right. The leveling up system was actual cool making the game more appealing for changing the gameplay just a tad.
Thanks. I never get bored of classic arcade game. Just one note though. Supposedly there were two ports for the cpc the second may have been by virgin games. Apparently played a lot better.
@JustJamie1983 switch sorry I know how to apply the updates via the software running on the pc directly, but I've tried to find it within RB and no luck thank you
Unfortunately, I suffered the Melbourne House c64 version. I still have the £9.99 Deluxe boxed version. It had a note from the programmers apologising for the characters being split into two different sprites due to the limited memory. Despite it being bad, I played it more than most games I had. We just accepted that Double Dragon was a very hard game to convert, so we forgave it for being as bad as it was.
Me and my friend was just about to complete the game in the late eighties on the sega master system when the game disappeared. We then realised his Rottweiler had chewed the power cable the dog received a shock but was ok.
I used to play the PC version a lot. You could play either 16 colour mode or CGA. The one you show is the 16 colour mode but on my computer instead of being too fast it was way too slow and not very fun. The CGA mode on the other hand ran at a perfect speed for our ancient computer and included everything the arcade had except that it loads between levels and the statues that stabbed in the last level weren't there. Even though the AMIGA and Genesis have much better graphics I would say the PC version was the best port because it was very true to the arcade and the game speed was just right. Then Genesis version looks way too fast to me.
Did I miss the NES version on your list? Did you explain why it was missing? I just never saw it anywhere and don’t remember hearing why it wasn’t included. Maybe I need to watch the video again.
It's been a very long time since i played it on the c64, but when i got double dragon on the c64, i was a very happy kid. turns out it's the worst version of all, just goes to show how time dilutes your memories and why it's sometimes best not to revisit your old favourites.
The Genesis version was one of the few unlicensed games that came out alongside Super Off Road from a comp called Ballistic I think.Even if the music and AI didn't quite match the arcade it was the closest you could get in late 92 or early 93 when it was released. The Master System version is superior to the NES version too it was one of the few times Sega had the better version of a big game for the time.
I had the Spectrum version back in the day. I thought it was laugh out loud hilarious, in a good way. I got much enjoyment out of this game. I’m pretty sure you are able to climb the ladders if you line up correctly too
I had the Master System version when I was younger. A nice little port, and two players could enjoy it as well. I always wanted the Genesis version, though, but it never showed up at any of the stores around where I lived at the time. And now, even the cart-only copies aren't exactly cheap anymore, and a complete copy has become pricey (I like my Genesis games complete when I get them).
@@JustJamie1983 It was weird, because Ballistic's other games showed up. I remember seeing Onslaught, Hardball, Bubsy, Turrican and Star Control (great port btw, and the first 12Mb cart for the Genesis) and others on the shelves at Electronic's Boutique, Software Etc. and places like that, but I never saw Double Dragon anywhere.
One thing that is pretty effed up on the master system port is the weapon collision detection.. check your footage in slo mo and watch the enemy fly back before your whip makes contact. I always thought that was lazy of the programmers.
How come NES not on list? With exception that only one player in story mode, it was identical to arcade with extra levels. The music was fantastic too. I thought it would be number one.
As a kid I thought the SMS version far outclassed the gimped NES port, but as an adult I realize it's the exact opposite. The minute-by-minute gameplay is broken by the fact that there's no hitstun, therefore no combos. You can't even link two punches together unless the CPU decides to stand there and let you do it. The SMS audio/visuals are much better but the actual in-game mechanics and fisticuffs are much worse.
Great video. The arcade machine itself runs like crap, slowdown all over the place. Its crazy to think how much more advanced final fight was just a couple of years later ..
Great list. The only thing I would swap is I would put the Master System above the Genesis. The music on the Genesis is atrocious and the speed and gameplay isn’t right and as good. Outside of that, I thought it was great. Was the Nes version not listed because it is so different?
Yes, I did mention that at the start, as much as its one of my personal favourites (NES), it just couldn't fit in, much like the Game Gear has an OK version too.
@ Ah cool. I mist have missed that. I most often listen to videos while doing chores and glance over from time to time. Makes sense. Hopefully we get a DD2 video. My favorite version of that one is the PC Engine CD port.
I got the OG on the Speccy.. It wasn't brilliant it wasn't horrendous but it could have been so much better. So I was hesitant when for Christmas 1990 we me and all my mates were pulling out that seasons big games from a bowl on paper to see who was going get what games for Christmas between us so we could create (completely legitimate compilation tapes TM) for each other and have ALL the games. We'd all upgraded to C64 by this point and I got stuck with being the one to get DD 2... and... wow.. DD2 on the C64 is proof that the original could have had a decent port if the programmers had actually cared
As an NES owner and Double Dragon fan, I was low-key jealous of the Master System version. The advertisement rubbed it in our Nintendo faces that the Sega version was more arcade accurate as well as featuring kind of a big deal at the time.... 2-player co-op!
Double Dragon 2 on the NES was co-op, my brother and I had loads of fun playing that game! While I can now objectively realise it wasn't a fantastic game, it's the one I have fondest memories of, along with maybe Elite and SM3.
I really wanted the original trilogy to be rebooted on the Neo•Geo, but instead we got two knock-off versions of SF and KOF with the "Double Dragon" franchise name slapped on them. Also, the amazing and addictive GBA port made a huge mistake by shoehorning characters and stages in the game that belong in a potential Double Dragon Advance 2.
Played it to death in the arcades first time around and have amazing memories from those days. I’ve no interest in going back to it……I was there, the golden age of gaming and played it how it was meant to be played.
Watchable and entertaining video, thanks. For me MD version is too fast and doesn't have the slowdown, which I think is part of the game. I have to mention that there are 2 ports on the Amstrad CPC....one being WAYYYYY worst than the other.... Wish the best of the two was mentionned in this ranking rather than the crappy one....
I remember playing a demo of this a year after i bought Target Renegade for the Speccy (Which is better in pretty much every respect), and thought "Bad arcade port". When i tried it in the arcade a few years later, i came to conclusion that it was actually a reasonably accurate port, just the arcade was a bit rubbish.
Just to note but there are two versions of DD on Amstrad. The one you showed in the video but also a Spanish version by different developers. Sadly it isn't the better game. Same applies with DD2 on Amstrad but there is only one version of DD3
Hi Jamie - just came here from your OutRun video. I'm sure you've turned off comments on it because everyone's saying the same thing, but you weren't changing gear in most of the games, that's why you didn't see any cars! Good video apart from that, but surely worth doing the video again?
More than just a port, "Double Dragon Advance" is a full on remake which integrates elements from Double Dragon 1, 2, 3, and even some new content. It was even developed with some of the Technos staff that worked on the original. The definitive version of Double Dragon for the ages.
I have the Atari 7800, C64, Master System and Mega Drive version. Don't think any of them are great. Had the C64 version as a child and didn't hate it. Master System has the endless credits bullshit. Mega Drive version should have been a lot better in general. The Atari 7800 version has horrible music.
in my opinion the rank for the DOS version is awful. in my opinion it could rank better than the CPC, speccy and atari 2600 and 7800 ports, and maybe upfront of the MSX.
The Genesis/Megadrive port was not good. Graphically it looks great, but the sound is off, the ai is absolute garbage, and it runs too fast. I had rented it back in the day and was severely disappointed with it. The SMS version was better in comparison. Of his list, the GBA port would be #1, the Lynx port at #2 (even with at times sluggish inputs), the SMS port at #3, then the Genesis/Megadrive at #4.
Yeah I agree. I’m a massive fan of the arcade but the megadrive version just doesn’t play the same. Had the sms version as a child, still find it very playable today unlike segas 16bit version.
I posted the same as well. I would have put it at #4; behind the GBA, Lynx, and SMS ports. I am certainly glad I had rented it in the day instead of deciding to buy it on a whim.
@JustJamie1983 thanks and it was a great game this in the 80s, always used to be feeding my big 10ps in it with my brother or my cousin and always played till the end ❤️ we always used to have a big audience by the end and always loved it 👍 such nostalgia and what a great game it wss 😊
Lots of terrible home ports ( thanks Melbourne house ) . The megadrive version looked great but tran way too fast . Music rather scratchy too Amiga version shocking that no music and them awful sprites , big let down
Definitely terrible ports. It's almost sad that I was able to get some enjoyment out of the Melborne House C64 port. I thought the graphics were acceptable, but the hit and move tactic got boring quite fast and all enemies acted the same; even the gunman that never shot. I also remembering finding so many bugs in the game such as getting the enemy 'stuck' in the background then moving him offscreen to effectively eliminate them... lol
Trigger warning? For what? I'm pretty sure anybody watching this video hasn't even played half these ports let alone all of them to get upset where a version might rank.
You need to factor in playability Jamie as the spectrum version and Atari versions are truly crap. None of them can recreate the game and are unplayable. SPECTRUM PITFIGHTER NEXT.
There is only one way to play double dragon and that is in your local arcade in the 80s with a queue of people watching you and trying to get their go next,. nothing at home comes close, even the emulation is lacking unless you've got an original board and screen. My Sony Trinitron screen does a fair job at it but it's still missing that certain something, nothing like being shoulder to shoulder with a mate or stranger and making your way through this superb game, i had the speccy growing up and the atari st, i more or less agree with your list besides the advance version, i cannot stand this game being bastardised any more than it already is and all the new versions are utter dogshit.
@@JustJamie1983 Im afraid it's a single seater... Those days are dead.... Such a shame, there was nothing like playing a game back then with 20p and just remaining on due to just being fkn brilliant at a game (looking at street fighter 2 CE) but double dragon I could finish in 1 go. If you want your arcade games to run close to perfect then you'll need a CRT and a decent VGA to CGA converter, using batocera you'll need to add 240p in a super resolution then some mode lines... Could break the crt but it'll be worth it when it works.. that's how I play all my old games.
The only issue I ever had with the arcade version was that the elbow smash was so powerful you could 1 credit the entire game with it. Even the slowdown had a certain charm to it. It's a shame none of the home ports ever got it 100% right.

To this day, Double Dragon Advance is probably the Closest and BEST "port" for the original Arcade game.
Agreed 👍
Sega Master System was the version I had, and played it to death. It's a bit on the easy side but very fun and mostly accurate to the arcade as you say. Most importantly though it allows for 2 player simultaneous play, which many home versions do not.
I agree, next to the arcade, the sms was the best
Arcade version definitely the best 👍
100%
as in 99% of examples of ports from arcade xD
I love these port comparison videos you do, thanks!
Hey no worries. Sid James is a legend 😀
I was quite surprised at the Lynx version. Despite it being zoomed in, it looked pretty close to the original arcade version.
Yup. Absolutely craziness how well it pulled that game off.
Ok relax. Not really
Opinions can vary 😉

Super Double dragon for SNES is the best double dragon game I’ve played and one of the best and most underrated beat em ups of all time!
Had that for Christmas 1993. Sadly it's very different to the arcade game.
Yeah but it was infinite
They got Billy looking like beavis😂
Nice one! I loved Double Dragon back in the day, I never knew there were versions other than the NES.
Haha, far too many, mostly pretty bad, but its all about showcasing the past.

I have to mention that there are 2 ports on the Amstrad CPC....one being WAYYYYY worst than the other.... Wish the best of the two was mentionned in this ranking rather than the crappy one....
Yup.
Target Renegade was great. Such a shame about...Renegade III - The Final Chapter!
@@JustJamie1983 I saved up 2 weeks of paper round money to buy that travesty. Still haven't forgiven Your Sinclair.
@spodula take them to court 😀
Just to note but there are two versions of DD on Amstrad. The one you showed in the video but also a Spanish version by different developers. Sadly it isn't the better game. Same applies with DD2 on Amstrad but there is only one version of DD3
Yup. I have found out about the other Version since. A little like the C64.
You forgot the ZEEBO version?? C'mon Mann.
Hi Jamie - just came here from your OutRun video. I'm sure you've turned off comments on it because everyone's saying the same thing, but you weren't changing gear in most of the games, that's why you didn't see any cars! Good video apart from that, but surely worth doing the video again?
Thanks for your comment. But it was disabled as TH-camrs don't deserve to be abused.
Mexican double dragons? Bonito and Julio 😅
Haha
More than just a port, "Double Dragon Advance" is a full on remake which integrates elements from Double Dragon 1, 2, 3, and even some new content. It was even developed with some of the Technos staff that worked on the original. The definitive version of Double Dragon for the ages.
Amstrad version looks least playable
@@MrYossarianuk just extremely slow.
Double Dragon Reloaded is the best version ever created.
11:21😂
It's true lol
I have the Atari 7800, C64, Master System and Mega Drive version. Don't think any of them are great. Had the C64 version as a child and didn't hate it. Master System has the endless credits bullshit. Mega Drive version should have been a lot better in general. The Atari 7800 version has horrible music.
Make the collection for the 5 and the 4
?
in my opinion the rank for the DOS version is awful. in my opinion it could rank better than the CPC, speccy and atari 2600 and 7800 ports, and maybe upfront of the MSX.
Hey, thanks very much for your feedback.
What ????? The megadrive double dragon is atrocious!! It's utterly broken.
Thanks for the feedback.
How is the 7800 version not #1
Haha. It was very close.
Ar ade of cawse
The Genesis/Megadrive port was not good. Graphically it looks great, but the sound is off, the ai is absolute garbage, and it runs too fast. I had rented it back in the day and was severely disappointed with it. The SMS version was better in comparison. Of his list, the GBA port would be #1, the Lynx port at #2 (even with at times sluggish inputs), the SMS port at #3, then the Genesis/Megadrive at #4.
Thanks for your feedback.
The genesis game had awful sound and music and the game was far too fast
All subjective 😀
Looks like Michael Jackson on the Commodore 64
Yeah I agree. I’m a massive fan of the arcade but the megadrive version just doesn’t play the same. Had the sms version as a child, still find it very playable today unlike segas 16bit version.
I posted the same as well. I would have put it at #4; behind the GBA, Lynx, and SMS ports. I am certainly glad I had rented it in the day instead of deciding to buy it on a whim.
There is an MD+ hack that adds arcade music. Add the Pyron color hack. Then add the arcade speed hack.
just use mame and get the original of this as the other versions of this was rubbish 👍
My latest MAME Tutorial is right here:

@JustJamie1983 thanks and it was a great game this in the 80s, always used to be feeding my big 10ps in it with my brother or my cousin and always played till the end ❤️
we always used to have a big audience by the end and always loved it 👍
such nostalgia and what a great game it wss 😊
@Crazy-Reels ah great memories. I remember those times where people would gather around and watch 😀
@@JustJamie1983 yep same as hang on, outrun and space harrier ❤️
Double Dragon Advance surpasses the Arcade original.
Hey, I think that one is controversial but a good answer.
Lots of terrible home ports ( thanks Melbourne house ) . The megadrive version looked great but tran way too fast . Music rather scratchy too
Amiga version shocking that no music and them awful sprites , big let down
It's all true I tells you. Those 8 bit micro ports were disgraceful.
Haha. People have reacted so badly with one of these videos that it is their as reminder that people have different opinions.
Hit detection is horrible on master system
Thanks
Gba version best home version
Hey, thanks for your feedback. Certainly is a great port for sure.
Nes
Great version but different than arcades.
@JustJamie1983 yes true but it was fun back then and its still fun today BTW thanks for the video
You need to factor in playability Jamie as the spectrum version and Atari versions are truly crap. None of them can recreate the game and are unplayable. SPECTRUM PITFIGHTER NEXT.
Playability is pretty much all I talk about in each port. Not sure Pitfighter was actually anything great as an arcade game to be honest.
Double Dragon is not a technical accomplishment.
Why are so many of he ports so bad?
Controversial
There is only one way to play double dragon and that is in your local arcade in the 80s with a queue of people watching you and trying to get their go next,. nothing at home comes close, even the emulation is lacking unless you've got an original board and screen. My Sony Trinitron screen does a fair job at it but it's still missing that certain something, nothing like being shoulder to shoulder with a mate or stranger and making your way through this superb game, i had the speccy growing up and the atari st, i more or less agree with your list besides the advance version, i cannot stand this game being bastardised any more than it already is and all the new versions are utter dogshit.
I don't have a time machine. Do you have a Delorean you could lend me please? Would love to go back to 87.
@dlads79 sounds awesome 👌
The only issue I ever had with the arcade version was that the elbow smash was so powerful you could 1 credit the entire game with it. Even the slowdown had a certain charm to it. It's a shame none of the home ports ever got it 100% right.
