Hard disagree on Ninja: Shadow of Darkness. It was an awesome game. It wasn't deep, but for a kid it worked really well. I grew up with many great games and still loved playing it.
@goosebogey I would rent it as a kid and when returning it, I would be excited for the next time that I could play it. Sega Lord X is awesome, but I just can't agree on this one. Even if I were to play it now and not like it, the fact is that I loved it as a kid and that is what matters. There are games that people want it to appeal to everyone, but they aren't all going to accomplish that. I know that at the end he acknowledged that people could see differently to him, but what he said about Ninja: Shadow of Darkness just made it look like it isn't for anyone when that simply isn't true.
Yeah that game was awesome. It's little challenging at first but you get used to it. It's not like say the perfect weapon, that was unplayable. Sega lord and some of these critics like triple jump and gameranx are harsh
The reason Alien Resurrection was so hard was because the developers did all of the play testing themselves instead of getting outside testers to give them advice for lowering the difficulty. Same reason for the original Rayman’s ball crushing difficulty.
The PS1 library is as vast as the ocean. They're not all gonna be winners. Final Doom on the PS1 did try to make up for the missing content by adding levels from the collection "The Master Levels for Doom 2", but those are of varying quality.

Think I may have an answer to why Twisted Metal had a tiny cutesy spinoff, there was a trend of using “chibi” or cute versions of otherwise “serious” franchises, including Virtua Fighter Kids and Pocket Fighter for the Street Fighter franchise. This may have been an attempt at capitalizing off that.
If you still have a copy of Alien Resurrection, there is a secret feature where you can play imports and backups of PS one games on your system. After inputting the level select codes and holding the correct buttons, you will be able to swap the game out for an import or backup, then you will have to press the next buttons correctly to launch that game. Alien Resurrection never came out in Japan, but I think the way of launching imports and backups on that game has something to do with how the western PS one consoles unlocked the disc drive to allow off-region and non-genuine PS one game discs. This same technology would have been used for the TonyHax application, though it requires setup on a PS2 with uLaunchElf running, and requires the appropriate software needed to launch TonyHax, like THPS2-4 (Create-a-skater roster exploit, where TonyHax gets its name), Crash 2 or Warped (Backup menu exploit), XS Moto, Castrol Honda VTR, Tekken 2 or 3 (Greatest Survivors ranking screen exploit), Castlevania Chronicles, or even Final Fantasy IX.

Star Wars Masters of Teräs Käsi, I wanted it day 1 when I saw it in a gaming magazine as a kid. watching your videos is like watching Saturday morning cartoons every day. Now, bring back the OG cartoon intro to your videos. It was so charming and nostalgic
Alien Resurrection and Driver 2 are technically quite impressive, Final DOOM wouldn't bother console gamers that didn't have PCs, as most didn't have a clue if this version had cut content. As for Driver 2's difficulty, it's like arcade games, really, you mess up, you lose it, but it's not THAT hard, you just have to try a few missions over and over. I just wish developers had realized the potential the game has with its free-roaming gameplay and the possibility of driving almost any car available. As a side note, this game was ported to PCs with ReDriver 2, the performance and the cleaned up visuals more than make up for the console's shortcomings, but even so, the game is still great to this day, even on its original form. One thing that has to be said here, though, is that many games on this list would be seen on a much better light, had they come to the Saturn, I mean, there are no Star Wars games on the Saturn, no Alien Resurrection, no Driver, no Harry Potter, no Ninja and no Twisted Metal. I understand that the video is about letdowns and I don't disagree with your points at all. And, speaking of letdowns, I remember my young teenage self at 12 and 14 reading magazines covering 80% PS1 and 20% N64 in late 1998 onwards, where was Shining Force 4 for the Dreamcast, Street Fighter III for the Saturn, Pandemonium 2 for the Saturn, Croc 2, Tomb Raider 2 and 3 for the Saturn, and on and on, this was a big letdown, but with all that, it made me look at all games released for the Saturn from 1998 and back and enjoy and discover many games it already had. Believe me, a regret I don't have is spending years enjoyed all the Saturn had to offer. It only saddens us that the console just didn't reach its true potential. Virtua Fighter 3, Shenmue and a polished and finished Burning Rangers without any rush would bring tears to us fans. Still, after all that, my brothers and I played the PS1 for many years well into the mid 00's. Just a brilliant console, the 5th generation was the best for me and the most transformation the industry ever had since.
Final Doom for PSX was my first go at the Master Levels, TNT, and Plutonia; so you could imagine my surprise when I learned years later about all of the other levels! I remember playing the map 'Heck' for the first time on PC and being disappointed that the music was different lol. Aubrey Hodge's music is that good.
By the time Small Brawl was out, the PS2 had already come out. Sony basically figured people would give their ps1s to their younger siblings as a hand me down. From a business perspective, I think it made sense. Did it ever pay off? I'm not sure.
To add to that point, we had quite a few younger kid oriented spinoffs from a bunch of devs coming out around that time at the end of ps1's reign. Two I can think of quickly are the Crash Team Racing kart racer and the Chocobo kart racer from Square. I think they also did a Chocobo's Dungeon game as well, similarly kid focused.
I bought Masters of Teras Kasi for full price when it came out. I hated it so much that I eventually snapped the disc in half. I've purchased many bad games over the years that really pissed me off, but that was the only time I've actually destroyed a game disc/cartridge.
I remember a friend of mine loved WCW/NWO Revenge on my N64 but he had a PlayStation. I went to his place when he got Thunder and we hated it. Within the next few days at the used game shop I saw every game he owned there, the stand out was Thunder since at that time it was still new so I knew they were his titles. He confirmed ditching all of it and trading for a N64. I always thought that was very dramatic for a wrestling game
I loved Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone back then. Guess it makes sense since I turned 11 that year. That's nice how you used the original UK title and not the American Sorcerer's Stone one 👍🏼👍🏼
id love to see a video in the same style of a similar list for games that most critics/players hate but segalordx loves i think it would be an interesting idea for a companion piece to this video. loving these longer form videos in general, be they positive or negative i always find this channel to be cozy and enjoyable. in a sea of youtube ragebaiters i find it very refreshing to hear from someone who just seems earnest in their takes. Stay awesome man! this has been my fave gaming channel for some time now and i hope it continues for years to come!
Brings back the awful memories of WCW Thunder. Steel Cage matches in a empty area. Or during the battle royal having the camera just zoom out revealing a void.
On Gameday 98, I’m with you Sega Lord X. Playing this game at my friends’ houses back in high school was my first entry into the IP, and the game was praised like it was the new standard of football video games and would take the mantle from Madden. I was scratching my head then and still can’t understand what was the appeal.
There was a Star Wars Terras Kassi game on the Wii. I was psyched about it till I played it. The best part of that game was the part of the manual that said Mace Windu's secret move was called "The Path of The Righteous"
Now that you mention Dukes of Hazzard, I had a fellow friend and classmate from school who traded in his PS2 to some stranger with the intent of watching DVDs on it (using it as an entertainment device) and he got a PS1 in return where he was playing Dukes of Hazzard. I don’t know the rest of the story I’m afraid.
I wonder if C The Contra Adventure can be fixed with a romhack. Maybe get a dual analog control scheme working, it would dramatically improve the 3rd person and top down sections, maybe turn the top down sections into a twin stick style shooter.
I would love a part 2. I totally get the disappointment. I remember actually enjoying Teras Kasi back in its day. But im sure it's only because i had alot of free time to find the moves and dial in my playing. And im sure i wouldn't enjoy it the same now. But this would be a great game to remake now with a much larger universe of characters to pull from
Imagine being in your early 40s, still into games, and this was your golden youth… And I still would go back to it for all the things I missed and that very optimistic feeling that gaming overall was constantly evolving and could only get better… If only we had known.
@Zeburaman2005 I would totally rather be older now and gotten to experience that era from and older perspective, im 32 so really was a good ways behind in really getting to experience this era
Took me a little longer getting around to watching it but another good video mate. Can't go far wrong with a PS1 episode. Even though I only had about 3 Master System 2 games I always enjoy watching those ones. Actually Master System, Megadrive Dreamcast take your pick really. I did however think with the upcoming release of the House of the Dead 2 remake, do you think it would be possible to utilise the motion controller from the PSVR2 as a sudo light gun in any way? A semi VR House of the Dead would also suit me just fine 🙂. If not the Switch version will do just fine 👌
Nice video as always mate. Going to have to disagree with you on alien resurrection I think it's the best FPS on the PS1 you are right though it is very difficult
I've played and still own 2 of these game's! Driver 2 and Ninja: Shadow of Darkness! I can tell you that Driver is extremely hard and I have never beaten it even after all these year's! As for Ninja: Shadow of Darkness I can tell you it's been year's since I beat that game and it was very hard at time's but the end level seemed easier if I remember!
Ironically, TM: Small Brawl was the first PS1 game I got back with my PS2 and 9 year old me loved the fact it was basically all the stuff we did with hot wheels in video game form 😂even though it totally flopped it got me into the franchise and will always be special to me
I have to ask why you were using footage of what seems to be the German version of Driver 2?? The animations for the moves in Nitro and Thunder were actually good I felt the moves look decent, it was just the insane speed and rotating camera that makes everything seem off I think from a visual point of view. I really wanted Nitro and Thunder to be good as screenshots looked decent, but alas, we had to go to the N64 for quality WCW games! The Playstation had just as many letdowns as hits and all these games pretty much deserved to be on this list!
Not even slightly. No Mercy and Wrestlemania 2000 are both bad playing, overrated trash and Smackdown 2 beats both of them hands down without even trying. N64 Wrestling games were NEVER good. Your misplaced nostalgia lied to you.
@@teruienages962I gotta back him up here. I've heard more praise for the AKI wrestling games than criticism. Heck I owned all of them except for World Tour. They were all good.
I am a huge defender of PS1 Doom but you are absolutely correct about PS1 Final Doom. The former tries very hard to not feel like you are getting a lesser product than the PC version by adding unique levels and completely changing the sound and lighting which serves to create a very different experience. I've always said that PC Doom feels like an action shooter whereas PS1 Doom feels like a horror game. But Final Doom fails to build upon this concept despite having a whole year to do so, it has no unique levels, and just generally feels rather low effort. I don't think it is necessarily a bad game, but it is a disappointing one.
I never played any of these games, so good to hear I didn't miss anything. Though, I do remember renting the original Driver on the PS1 as a kid and not even being able to complete the parking garage tutorial! 🤣
I feel you. I have memories of sitting in my mate's lounge throwing myself at that over and over again. I finally managed it but considering it was a purchase and not a rental I felt like we had to crack it. I also have memories of having to keep to some form of speed limit which was an absolute pain without an analogue gas button!
I couldn't believe the state of Driv3r when I played the demo back then. I must've encountered a bug every 30 seconds. Constantly falling through floors or buildings, dialogues getting stuck etc. Back then I replayed the demo discs a lot and yet I was unable to get very far at all with this one.
The only one of these i played was star wars. I recall just pulling out your blaster for 1 shot was ridiculously complex. Fun times with that jank game tho. Bring on part 2! This generation had the most games of this type of all time on it (by volume)
I only played the demo of 3 but Small Brawl looks like it uses the same engine. Would have to flip over to confirm it, in addition to adding HEY YEAH IM THE SUPERBEAST
Honorable mention for me is Tomb Raider The Last Revelation/Chronicles. You could tell the development team was burned out by the third game and then with The Last Revelation, the wheels were starting to come off. When Chronicles was released, you could tell they were just done with the whole thing.
It is not often I disagree with you, but I have to object to your thoughts on Final Doom. It was great, and sure, it might have been missing content, but it was a lot of fun and I still enjoy it today. Keep pumping out the great content!!!!
Doom's core gameplay is always fun, but PSX Final Doom has less than half the actual product. That's a huge issue IMO. Imagine if Mortal Kombat 3 came to the PSX and had half the stages, half the fighters, and half the fatalities.
I will stand on the table for Alien:Resurrection. Playing that in HD on duckstation with save states was an absolute blast. I also think Driver 2 and GameDay '98 are a lot of fun.
I was a bit shocked you included ALIEN Resurrection :( But I completely understand your reasoning and in a way agree... it could of been so much more if it were a bit more accessible. I own an original copy on black label PAL & even on a CRT with a PS2 controller, and cheats turned on its a sadistic game lol. Worse than Tomb Raider 3 actually for its difficulty. Pity, because it's also one of the most impressive games on the PS1 regarding technical achivement and runs with unlocked frame rates.
I remember having hundreds of PS1 games when I was a kid but never had these titles you've listed. Maybe my father has good taste of games but I remember having trouble liking that Batman and Robin game.
Nintendo introduced the 'seal of quality.' It was a certification process to guarantee a game against piracy and other issues that had led to the crash of the industry in 1983 where so many poor quality titles were being launched and copied. However by the early 1990s this ended up being used more as a strict control over publisher and developer rights than real quality control. Many arguments and battles ensued. Sega were not much better and famously fought with Accolade and EA over licensing rights which Sega effectively lost, leading to EA making their own cartridges. Sony came along and said ok: we have a certification process, but ultimately you can release whatever you want as long as we get a cut. Also, we will give anyone a cheap devkit and even make basic ones for homebrew devs. This led to nearly every world class dev getting hold of kits no problem. Smaller talented devs also capable of building new 3D games and of course, bottom feeders who got kits and made garbage as the system became popular. Luckily the garbage was outweighed by the gold. Sony's strategy worked.
Well i was sleeping and thinking if I could playing the Nintendo Switch 2 but then Sega Lord decided to upload a video, I somehow woke up and hit play and never looked back. Good video dude
Actually i have finished Final Doom on PS1. It was very difficult for me, because levels were not easy. I have not finished TNT Evilution and Plutonia on PC because it was too hard. Because of that PS1 version of Final Doom was more tolerable and playable and finishable.
Dude I luv your channel and you have amazing passionate content but Die Hard Game Fan was awesome ! They were the ONLY ones that defended the Dreamcast when it was actually out. Unlike all the other publications at the time like IGN that turned on the Dreamcast the minute the PS2 was released.
The hobbled PS1 Final Doom is really curious. Why was it so cut down I wonder.. If it was a standard port then all the work had been done and there was no storage limitations on CD so there was no reason for it not to be a 1:1 release. So maybe there was more to it in that it wasn't a set and forget port and all the content had to go through some manual tweaking and there were complications (possible ram limitations or something else?). It also doesn't make sense how it ran worse than the original release??
I remember playing through Dukes of Hazzard back when. I actually remember the cops not bothering me, but the physics in the flashbacks? Oh my god, the worst. When you're driving Uncle Jesse's whip, it's just horrendous.
Texture warping was bad enough but the dithering on the PS1 was probably even worse. I was always critical of the Saturn back then (Sega fanboy) but I never realised the PS1 also had some major shortcomings.
6:15 alien resurrection is good, but like you said, its wayyyy too difficult. I had to restart the game a couple times because i never had enough ammo for certain stages.
Disappointing Saturn games next? Might as well complete the 32-bit era trifecta.
Joe... my man!! 😎
Doom immediately came to mind!
Joe!
There were no disappointing Saturn games.
Probably.

I've always loved just free roaming in Driver 2, but your criticism is completely valid, of course.
We kind of got GTA 3D on PS1 thanks to Driver 2.
Indeed!
Yeah I had a blast with the free roam and the video director mode when all the police cars were crashing and breaking the hell out of the physics. Lol
And and world scariest cop chase for the true crime series.
Yeah I agree, Driver 2 was great.
That 199.99 felt like 500 bucks as a kid
It literally was $500 in 1996😂. And it felt like even more if you already had a Saturn
Pretty accurate, with inflation, $199 had the buying power of roughly $400 in the 90s
Indeed. Inflation.
I paid $299! Then about 3 months later the $100 price cut was announced! Never again bought a console on its 1st year!

watching your videos is like watching Saturday morning cartoons every day.
15:27 Goldberg casually throwing The Giant around the ring like he's a common cruiserweight 😂😂
3Xtreme had a hidden trick mechanic that was barely mentioned in game.
Cool video bud! Did you already do this topic for Sega Saturn? You probably did.
I'm playing WarCraft II on Saturn right now.
Man Driver 2 was flawed but at the time still the best ps1 game you could buy. I never thought of it as a downgrade from the first.
I was almost sleeping but the Sega Lord X show up!
Me and you both bro.
Amen!!!
Same 😂
Ikr lol
Same here😂
By the time Small Brawl was out, the PS2 had already come out.
You should unironically do a top 200 for the Saturn or PlayStation 😅 I’d watch the hell out of that.
Sega Lord X only thing keeping me from offing myself.
I hope that's not the case. It can't rain all the time.
I swear to hell this was the first time I ever saw C The Contra Adventure in action because I refused to ever play it, haha
Loving this 'Letdowns' series! Hope to see more rounds of the platforms you've already covered + new platforms
Driver 2 is amazing
There was a Star Wars Terras Kassi game on the Wii.
I was psyched about it till I played it.
The best part of that game was the part of the manual that said Mace Windu's secret move was called "The Path of The Righteous"
13:35 now that's something I'd watch
Now that you mention Dukes of Hazzard, I had a fellow friend and classmate from school who traded in his PS2 to some stranger with the intent of watching DVDs on it (using it as an entertainment device) and he got a PS1 in return where he was playing Dukes of Hazzard. I don’t know the rest of the story I’m afraid.
The sequel to that Dukes Of Hazard game was actually pretty ok.
But this would be a great game to remake now with a much larger universe of characters to pull from
I would ABSOLUTELY give my life.... To go back and experience these eras....
What's to look forward to now?
Imagine being in your early 40s, still into games, and this was your golden youth… And I still would go back to it for all the things I missed and that very optimistic feeling that gaming overall was constantly evolving and could only get better… If only we had known.
@Zeburaman2005 I would totally rather be older now and gotten to experience that era from and older perspective, im 32 so really was a good ways behind in really getting to experience this era
His description of WCW Thunder was hilarious
Can you please do a Dreamcast letdowns?
For the N64 version of WCW nitro, you have to use the emulator simple64 for windows and it will run at the right speed.
@@marccaselle8108 You can only play Nitro and Thunder on PS if you want to see the rants though!
PlayStation had so many great games, but when it came to wrestling games, the N64 edged it out.
@@teruienages962SD2 was twitchy and kinda ugly, though it had a pace reminiscent of AEW, which is ass, as well...
I don't think it is necessarily a bad game, but it is a disappointing one.
ah man WCW Nitro holds a special place in my memory and heart, for the PC i had it and i loved it
I never played any of these games, so good to hear I didn't miss anything.
Agree with you on Alien Resurrection. I highly recommend folks play it on Easy even if they normally play games on Normal or Hard.
Damn I loved the demo of ninja. The included map was easy and so much fun. But after I bought the game I never even finished the first level.
Omg Alien trilogy I played so much of that game back in the day.
I would finish it and start over again.
Also Kings field 1 and 2 love them both.
Alien: Resurrection is actually awesome when playing with the PS Mouse. I got the mouse solely to play this and Quake II with the mouse.
Would you ever think about making a video about saving the arcades? Like creating a timeline where arcades can still be profitable? Please consider it
I couldn't believe the state of Driv3r when I played the demo back then.
I'd like to see you do a review for Taz Mania on the Sega Genesis
Very brave of you to add Small Brawl instead of Twisted Metal 3 on here.
I only played the demo of 3 but Small Brawl looks like it uses the same engine. Would have to flip over to confirm it, in addition to adding HEY YEAH IM THE SUPERBEAST
Twisted metal 3 was actually not bad twisted metal 4 should have been in this video it wasn't good at all really
@@britneyspearsvillarosaBeat me to it had the first four TM games myself.
Four was the only one I never bother to beat. 😢
I agree. Twisted metal 3 was pretty good.
Enjoy this series, a trip back through the games I never really had time to explore back then
7:00 I believe it was the very first, and everyone hated it too
Just started work and perfect time to watch a new Sega Lord X video.
Small Brawl is odd. Whats even odder, its running on the Black engine. Which is bonkers.
Great video. The logo of your chennel is pretty cool.
I remember having hundreds of PS1 games when I was a kid but never had these titles you've listed. Maybe my father has good taste of games but I remember having trouble liking that Batman and Robin game.
I once had a coked up hamster.. his name was Carl.
Should have named him Kevin Nash.
You had a coked up hamster for like 2 minutes :D
@@Adam-y6s6e He lived a good full 2 minutes.
Since Alien Resurrection supports mouse control, maybe its difficulty was adjusted for mouse play? In that case it would be a pretty good game.
Come on! Ninja Shadow of Darkness is pretty cool!
7:08 one of the first? What was the first game to use the right stick to look in FPS?
When they launched Demolition Derby and X games were revolutionary for my teenage self.
The best thing about alien resurrection on ps1 is with a cheat code it can function as a boot disc to play cdrs.
Well i was sleeping and thinking if I could playing the Nintendo Switch 2 but then Sega Lord decided to upload a video, I somehow woke up and hit play and never looked back. Good video dude
Mortal Kombat Sub Zero Mythologies, The Crow City of Angels, and Incredible Hulk are some big let downs.
I will always have a soft spot for those early rough around the edges polygon filled PS1 games
Awesome content! Always appreciate your opinion and viewpoint!
Glad you liked it!
Small Brawl's great though. Yeah, it's kiddie, but I kind of love that it's such a sillier subversion.
My comments weren't meant to slander Gamefan. I liked them too, but I feel their review scores were often overly generous.
@SegaLordX I can see that.
I always envisioned that Final Doom would have been a solid followup given the pedigree of the first game's original PS1 release.
I was wrong.
Mr Lord X, I've been curious as to what ur playing now? PS5? Xbox? PC games?
I'm mostly a PC gamer these days, but I play PS5 when on console.
@SegaLordX I love my PlayStation
I've been a Sega L X fan since day one, but I much prefer the videos that celebrate these old consoles, rather than look back in disappointment.
