I have most of these and have beaten about half. I had a lot more fun completing Miracle Warriors than I'd have expected. The pack-in map is a godsend for that one! I also especially enjoyed Golvellius- it scratches that classic Zelda itch well. I've beaten Ys on the system, but once I got the Turbo CD version, it took over as my preferred way to play. Wonder Boy games were always a jam. I remember the first time I beat Wonder Boy III, I played a good chunk of it on my Game Gear with my Master Gear converter. Good times. Sadly, I just don't like Phantasy Star, even though I really want to and keep trying to get into it. It's the dungeons. They are so tedious and labyrinthine, and the monochromatic appearance with little distinguishing characteristics is not engaging. I've played a little over half of it, and still have my graph paper maps- it just isn't fun for me. The grinding is even worse than the first Dragon Warrior on NES, too. The enemies are cool and look great, but I had a ton more fun with Miracle Warriors, which required less grinding and didn't have those tedious dungeons.
I have the map too and it is so cool!! You really don't get that special touch with today's games. I need to play through Golvellius sometime. I'd love to play the Ys series. I just haven't found time yet. Wonder Boy III is probably my favorite game of all time, followed by Zillion. Whoa, you don't like Phantasy Star?! I think you're the first person to say that haha. That's alright though, we all have different tastes. The dungeons can be a little obtuse at times. You do grind a ton, I remember grinding for like 8 hours before the final boss. Awesome input, thanks for watching! Always nice to meet another RPG and Master System fan.
I loved Zelda, so Goldenaxe looks cool! I've played a little bit of these old Ultimas, but the PC versions. Dang, Danan is swol XD I knew Wonderboy had to make this list ;) All 3 look slick! I'm always impressed how much they were able to do on old RPGs. Lord of the Sword has an interesting art style. I don't think I've seen anything quite like it, but it reminds me most of some of the MSDos games. Phantasy Star was another one I knew you'd add to this list... but only because you've taught me about it before. I like that you can hatch a dragon by "caring" for the egg and leveling up. Very fun idea! I didn't realize Zillion was an RPG. That's a fun genre-fusion! Ys is another one I'd heard about, but didn't know anything about really. Miracle Warriors has some really slick art! You can see the influences that directly led to the art of the 16 bit systems. Cool list, man!
If you love Zelda, you're gonna love Golden Axe Warrior! Ultima I think would be a little hard for me to get into now... Danan is definitely on that jungle juice! No way is that natural. Wonder Boy III is probably my favorite game... it's so good. Ohhhh I love MSDos games!!! Please please please play Phantasy Star sometime... it will blow your mind. I do like that gameplay mechanic for Dragon Crystal! Zillion has light RPG elements as far as leveling up and collecting new characters for your party, I just had to throw it in there haha. Ys is a series that i need to play... I haven't yet but I want that to change. Miracle Warriors also has a banging OST! Thanks for checking this out! Would love to watch you play them sometime.
Golden Axe Warrior definitely looks up my alley, as does Danan The Jungle Warrior…that one looks really fun! Golvellius is one I want to try also. Zillion is obviously on the top of my list of SMS games to play based on your high praise for it. Not gonna lie, the SMS looked it had some amazing RPGs! Awesome video, TC!
I think you picked out some great action RPGs that would suit your taste. I know you aren't big into RPGs but with more action on the screen, you'd like them. Zillion you need to play sometime my guy!! Thanks for watching.
I was never a RPG player. But, recently I started playing different video game genres, and this video will help me to choose some Master System games. Thank you for the video.
Glad you enjoyed this video! I have a lot of videos like this where I just try and showcase genres on consoles and let the viewer decide whether they want to play them or not. Happy gaming as you pick out some RPGs.
same, RPGs are my fave genre, with Strategy in second and Fighting at a distant third. Sports remains my least favorite, but i can play them without getting too bored. Visual Novels as few as there are in Video Games is my new genre to hate on, since there's little next to nothing aside from visuals and reading.
i've beaten quite a few on this list, Danan, Lord of the Sword and Golvellius. still got a ways to go before i get them all, though i am doing Miracle Warriors as we speak.
Wow, you've taken down quite a few RPGs! I wish I could say the same, I've only beaten a handful on this list. I think I want to play Golvellius or Miracle Warriors next. Thanks for watching!
1:55 I never had a master system What would love to play Golden axe Warrior As he looks awesome, 4:18 The jungle fighter looks pretty cool, Dragon crystal Task look like a really good Dungeon Crawler, Fantastic video great job mate
haha I did, but I feel like there were too many good games not to show off. If they had some RPG elements, I was going to showcase them! Thanks for watching buddy. Best of luck with Ultima...
Nice list! Golden Axe Warriors looks almost identical to The Legend of Zelda and looks awesome! Some of those games I know I would have a hard time trying to play them because the controls are archaic. I have no issues with retro graphics or sounds but controls is a hard pass for me. Too spoiled by todays controls I guess LOL! Great video and keep up the good work!
fair, it IS an acquired taste. i grew up on retro games myself, so i dont have that problem, but i can understand when some do. at least you can enjoy them through watching Longplays.
LOL I don't think they were hiding that they were ripping off Zelda, but it still is a great game. I agree, some of them can be... a little tough to play now but back then I'm sure they blew gamer's minds. Thanks for watching buddy, we are spoiled with some great RPGs.
Golden Axe Warrior is one I'd like to add to our lot; it looks like Zelda/Dragon Warrior(Quest) goodness all in one! Golvelius is another I think I'd like. I wonder wonder, boop-ba-doo-doo-whop, who put the Wonder in Boy! Phantasy Star is best for their spelling in that it makes me think of turning up the phunk and checking out a shaking phat ass. Nice seeing Ys make it on here! I still like the Miracle Warriors title screen how the characters look like ABBA.
If you love Zelda... and I know you do, play Golden Axe Warrior, you won't regret it! Golvelius is one I need to play through too! I highly encourage you to play the Wonder Boy series if you haven't yet. Thank you for using the term "phat ass" in the comment, bonus points for that. There are so many great RPGs that I need to play still like Ys and Miracle Warriors. Ugh, where is all the time in the world? I need it!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Ha ha, if we ever get a certain video set to live (it keeps getting pushed back thanks to other video drops) Lady Laci talks about breaking my legs just to get me game time. And to be honest, I'm not wholly against this...
I need to get around to play Phantasy Star. I have a version on Switch but need to play it. Ys is a good series and need to get around to finish the first one on the PSP
back 20 years ago I wanted to play this game as a completionist, didn't think I would enjoy the old 8 bit game yet it was a great experience. Last year I took it on switch and it is even better, quick game to do and it is almost open world and lets you travel to whatever donjon you like so this freedom was very refreshing for a game of this era
I always forget there is a version that you can play on the Switch. That's probably way better in today's age. You should play it when you have time! Now the Ys series is one that I still need to get into... I have them on the PSP too and I think I'll start there. Thanks for watching buddy!
