    Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older.But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

    Apparently when they brought up the longbows from the Mary rose the draw weight was 180 pounds, absolutely true, the English archers were immensely strong,

    More importantly, shoot your bow when it's not nice out as well, shooting 70 pounds when its 75 and sunny, vs 20 degrees is a different animal. Shoot when it's cold and you're muscles are cold and you'll find your true draw weight .

    Starting with keeping your weight on your leading foot is a great tip, that's something my coach never mentioned. Thank you.
    But yeah, the first thing we were taught in target archery is to never draw across the chest. You tend to struggle this way and when you do the arrow has a tendency to fall off the blade rest esp in the last few inches of the draw cycle (although that isn't a problem with captive drop-away rests and whisker biscuits). Even if you get away with it, you'll only physically last 1-2 dozen arrows at the most before you over-exert and completely lose accuracy. The other is the efficiency of movement - the bow arm has to start off at eye level and it doesn't move, so that when your draw hand has completed the draw cycle it anchors immediately and all you have to do is let the dot in the scope seat itself into the 10-zone before executing the shot.

    When I first started shooting bow, I was shooting instict and needed a ton of shooting throughout the summer to get my accuracy. By mid summer, I was shooting up to 3 straight hours solid without breaks. I increased my draw weight by 10-15 lbs also. That was almost 20 years ago now. Then I lived out in the country and shot whenever I wanted. Now I live in town and am not allowed to shoot inside city limits. Plus I am older, have had back issues, and injured my draw shoulder 5 years ago. I am excited to try this out and practice drawing back at home to work on the muscles to build the strength and muscle memory so when I do target shoot I'll be a step ahead.

     Yes practice, practice practice I shot a great 11 pointer last fall after shooting every day in the summer than just a couple of weeks before opening day like I used too,,So it was getting dark quick. moving deer 30 yards out of came out from nowhere and was walking in and out of cover. I had seconds to put it all together,, you brain goes into auto pilot mode and MUSCLE MEMORY kicks in. That's what the thousand of arrows I shot before helped me developed..

    What is the obsession with high draw weight? Back tension is important, but you should shoot what is comfortable and not aim for the highest.

    • @BrunkOutdoors
      @BrunkOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      william keeling because everyone should strive to be the best version of themselves. Learning how to maximize your muscles and be strong is actually a good thing. If someone doesn’t have a limiting injury I think everyone should set goals and strive to be their best. I’m Tired of people arguing that 70lbs is too much, if someone works at it it’s totally achievable. It’s called get up and do something and not just sit on the couch hating on people who want to maximize their potential.

    • @wk9953
      @wk9953 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrunkOutdoors I don't disagree that people should be the best they can. I do disagree with the culture spreading around archers and bow hunters that you have to shoot above 60 lbs to be effective. My comment was targeted at people who only want to shoot the highest amount without due regard to their limits, or what is comfortable. If you are comfortable at 70 shoot 70, but if you struggle with it you risk injury and developing bad habits.

    • @BrunkOutdoors
      @BrunkOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      william keeling we feel the same way, we only want people to shoot what is comfortable for them. We just get tired of people not realizing that 70 lbs can in fact be comfortable for people to draw. We have noticed the opposite, there seems to be much more of the push to shoot less weight now a days not a push for people needing to shoot 70 lbs. I lot of animals get lost due to not getting enough penetration, so you might as well strive to maximize your draw weight as long as you aren’t sacrificing form and accuracy. It just seems like people think it’s impossible to draw 70 lbs comfortably, when in fact a lot of regular people could be comfortable shooting even more than that.

    • @wk9953
      @wk9953 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrunkOutdoors then in fact it does seem we agree. I think the lack of penetration is the push for mechanical broadheads, and extremely light arrows. I think if people focused on making sure their setups were tuned and their arrows built for hunting and maximum penetration instead of speed they would lose less animals. I personally shoot 63 lbs at 29 1/2 with my recurve and a 7-900 grain arrow depending on what I am hunting

    • @BrunkOutdoors
      @BrunkOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      william keeling that’s an awesome set up! And 63 lbs is a lot for a recurve!Completely agree that mechanical broadheads and light arrows are one of the biggest contributors to lack of penetration.

  • @Shurmash
    @Shurmash 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think 50lbs is a good medium. 20lbs up from 30lbs, 20lbs down from 70lbs. Easier to draw and can take down large game at distance. I anchor beneath my chin because it aligns everything from the broadhead tip to the release. Virtually eliminates left-right axis deviation and drastically improves accuracy.

This all makes sense now based on how you described it and Im definitely gonna practice with it tomorrow thank you

    I shoot almost everyday year-round, when I can't shoot outside I can shoot in my basement it's almost 20.yards wall to wall.
    When I was younger (20s) I shot an 80 lb Martin firecat now we're back in the 80s way before you were born.
    At 60ish years old I shoot around 70# both of my hunting bows.
    When I draw I hold my Bow straight out in front of me and I do the high back elbow draw that takes a lot of strain off of your shoulders and back.
    Also with a high elbow draw when you come back you're peep and everything should be aligned you're coming right back into your anchor point there's no other movement I noticed the way you do it you're drawing way below your chin then you have to raise your hand up to your anchor point which is fine if that works for you.
    The main thing is shoot and shoot often I try and shoot at least 50 arrows a day.
    I'm betting I could still draw 80 lb today.
    But what's the point with modern bows they are so fast anyways

    Great video on the draw technique. Now I want to critique your shooting technique. Get your finger hooked around the trigger on your release and pull through the shot by bringing your draw elbow straight back and focus on using by squeezing your rhomboid muscles to make the shot go off. Trigger punching is a bad habit and can lead to target panic!

    This looks like Ohio area bro or somewhere close ?? He’s right it will come natural and easy and you’ll laugh at how easy it can be and how fast and silent them arrows fly . Then it gets even better learning to tune a bow and getting thst arrow to fly flat and true . I got anew bow this year but I still like shooting a2008 diamond marquis which is another thing I wanted to say is it’s probably better to get a used flagship bow than a new $3-$400 bow . Just my opinion over decades of shooting .

    Very good video, Practice, Practice, and more Practice . Biggest problem people are over bowed. They cant draw proper, and create real bad habits. Starting out with a proper poundage and draw. Lots of proper practice. Practicing all spring and summer everyday. Do a deer season. Then the following spring jump up 5lbs, and start the same process over again. 5 lbs is a huge difference. When it comes too drawing a bow and releasing a arrow. With the proper form.

    I'm 46 years old and haven't shot in over 20 years......and I have to admit I never had proper form, just had the strength to pull the bow back..... went to test a bow out the other day and I was embarrassed because I couldn't do it......Im still pretty damned strong but it felt like I couldn't even come close to pulling it back..... but after watching this I'm going to give it another go ......I want to get back into hunting real bad

    Interesting video and well put together but I can't agree. Drawing back with your elbow down, in my experience and opinion is a way stronger and safer position, especially for your shoulders.
    I've been shooting 80lb bows for a number of years and never once had a shoulder issue and never had a problem pulling back a bow, even in seated or kneeled positions and cold and miserable conditions.
    Each to their own though, what works for some won't always work for everyone.
    Keep up the quality content 👌

      Tony Gillahan thanks for watching Tony! You’re right that it may not work for everyone, biggest thing is for everyone to try to preserve their shoulders!

      @@tonygillahan i am 100 percent with you. I draw across my chest and try to keep my elbow moving parallel with the ground until i anchor. My shoulder will not allow me to draw like shown in the video. I do like how you dont have to as much moving finding your anchor point when you draw like this

    • @tonygillahan
      @tonygillahan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jordanpowell228 it does require slightly more movement to find anchor for sure, but I'd rather that than a stuffed shoulder.

    Been shooting like that for awhile but I'm getting old now might have'ta drop a couple pounds off that 70+ is getting tougher every year

    • @BrunkOutdoors
      @BrunkOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pat LeClere nothing wrong with dropping down! Bows are so efficient and powerful now that you really don’t absolutely need to shoot 70lbs to harvest an animal. Will it help break bone? yes but in our opinions it’s much better to preserve your body as best you can. So I’d rather drop draw weight instead of having to deal with shoulder problems or pain.

    Great advice! I have found that different muscles engage during the draw cycle and one might have to adjust depending on where the peak weight or hump is on the draw curve of your bow. Good tip on starting leaning forward and pre-tensioning the lats for early peak weight. For later peak weight, it helps to go chest proud to engage the big muscles between the scapulae. The best exercise I have found are gym ring crossed rows with back straight and parallel to the floor, pausing 2-4 seconds at the top.
