I want to personally apologize if I got the meaning of the song wrong. Please understand, y’all have heard the song for decades and I sat in front of y’all and heard it for the 1st time. But I after going back and listening, I can see all kinds of meanings. To me that’s what makes a beautiful writing song so awesome, it can mean anything to anyone. Thanks for watching and letting me know. Just please remember, I won’t get every song right. But that’s the beauty of having y’all, to correct me. TOGETHER WE GO, AND CONTINUE TO ENJOY MUSIC AND LEARN FROM EACH OTHER.🙏🏻👊🏻❤️

      You're not alone thinking that.

Songs can have whatever meaning you find in them. I think this song was actually written about a breakup (or a strained relationship?), using war as a metaphor.
It’s a great song no matter how you see it. You should check out the original, it’s quite different to the stripped back version.
Also, if you do have an interest in war and PTSD themes, check out the song by Redgum called “I Was Only 19”.

What I love is that there is about 3 generations at that concert. We Grey oldies saw them live in the '70's & '80's. Our children & grandchildren have Cold Chisel & Jimmy in our DNA !

This song , written by Rod Hirst, the drummer, is about the war of the breakdown of his marriage It is NOTHING to do with military war as you believe.. This is mainly sung by co-singer, Ian Moss.

      Who is Rod Hirst ?
I thought it was written by Steve Prestwiche, the Cold Chisel drummer ?

@@Rassskle You are correct. It was written by Steve Preswich (without the E on the end) I was having a 'senior's moment' at that time ! Rob Hirst was the drummer for Midnight Oil.

To be fair Rob Hirst is also a great songwriter. As well as being one of the hardest hitting drummers on earth.

    Redgum - I was only 19

This song was written by the band's drummer, Steven Prestwich.
Cold Chisel is a band like The Eagles, where every member of the band is an amazing songwriter.

Your volume is to low when the music is playing, and a bit loader when you are speaking, I will have to turn you off because I can't hear the singing.

Once again people .....this song has nothing to do with the military or armed combat.
Purely about the conflict (s) of the heart.
The conflict of heated argument or final seperation.
Has been suggested that Steve Prestwiche wrote the song about his own divorce.
Listen to the lyrics ( the words ).....clearly about heartbreak and personal loss.

Absolutely it is about family break-up - Jimmy took it onboard about his own DV family and others have adopted the idea it is about serving. The lyrics are just cryptic enough to fit all three scenarios. I believe that if a song makes you feel deeply [even if not the original intent] then it has done its job .......... except for those who think the the stalkery behaviour in The Police's 'Every Step' is romantic and used it as their wedding song - WRONG !!

Steve was only married to Joanne as far as I know and they broke up in 2011. This song was written in 1982, so I don’t think it is about his divorce.

I dont know the man or his family history......which is why is said " suggested "......truth is I have seen it stated at least 3 times as a fact, but as we both know......most internet facts are 100% bulldust. lol
In my own recent experiences it seems that many facts known for over 50 years have now been changed .
Not because of new info or new "facts" , but because a disc jockey said so, or put words into the mouth of a bored and disinterested musician / participant. lol

I did reply already Doc, but my reply seems to be missing. lol
Like most people, I only know what I read and from experience, I discount at least 90% of that.
I have read about 3 times now that it was written about his divorce, but all 3 reads might be from the same source.
Thank you for the correction.....I will try to remember for any future scribblings of my own.

Know the military should have everyone's respect
Whether you agree with what they do
You can't take away the risk they take for our lives
It a travesty the government's and leaders
Who send them to war and destroy them
Can't give them the respect by supplying help
If anyone deserves help first it them
