In this soap making video, I show you how I color handmade soap blue 100% naturally.
Indigo powder is an ancient natural dye that can produce shades of blue ranging from light blue to dark blue, depending on how much you use.
Indigo is derived from the leaves of the indigofera tinctoria plant.
In cold process soap making, indigo can be used to color soap by making an oil infusion, or by adding the indigo powder to the lye solution.
Adding the powder to the lye solution is easier, faster and produces a more vivid shade of blue in the final soap. To avoid speckles, the powder has to be completely incorporated into the soap batter and blended well.
When using indigo to color handmade soap blue, it is important to use light colored oils in your recipe. Using lots of yellow colored oils or fats, like extra virgin olive oil or cocoa butter, can affect the final color. Forcing the soap to go through gel phase will make the color more deep & vibrant.
With indigo, a little goes a long way. If you use too much powder, it will bleed from the final soap, color the lather blue and possibly stain fabrics that come into contact with the soap.

Hi I love love your vids.. can u tell how to add sodium lactate to your soap? When should I add after combining the lye solution or before
@@she_designs9041 You can add it to the cooled lye solution or to the oils🙂
I love the fact that your videos are so interesting, relaxing and you don't talk!! I enjoy your videos and hope you're around with us all for a long time. Thank you ❤️
Thank you so much Susan💝
Just bought Himalayan Rhubarb root powder and some indigo powder so make pretty soap. Can't tell you how much I appreciate you're in depth research you've done to help explain things for us! I've watched so many videos and I haven't had anyone explain WHY some put the indigo in with the lye vs making an oil infusion! YOURE A GOD SEND 🤣💗💖
I really, really love your soap making, you are such an artist, so simple and beautiful. Enjoy the music too. Thank you for sharing .🤗🥰
Thank you so much, that's so kind of you🥰
I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I love your soap making techniques. Adding the indigo to the lye water is interesting and I will try it. Thank you for sharing…

Je vous remercie pour ce très beau savon, jai juste une question pourquoi quand on mélange l'indigo et la soude sa nous donne la couleur marron pas cette belle couleur ? J'espère une réponse de votre part ☺
Wow, loved the colour so much. Nice recipe and well made video as usual.
Thank you so much🥰
Thanks Sara for this new video 👏
The indigo color is stunning.
Thank you☺️
Amazing! I've used indigo a at trace or in the lye, and I only got a brownish colour... I fui l have up with it... Didn't use ice cubes to make the lye, maybe that made or burn the plant? Really enjoyed the video and the result colour 😍 Thank you
Many thanks! Excellent! Your workbook has helped a great deal too!
Thanks for the video, I learn something new everyday, and decided I want to stop using mica in my soaps and rather use botanicals but I'm not sure if indigo can be used in hot processed soap
Hey, do i have to put the soap in the oven? I really don't like the idea of using the oven for food and soap
Very useful information 👌 Thank you so much 💓
I have made oil infusion with Indigo ,never knew that one can use it directly
Love your videos!! Wondering if you can add all colors directly to the ice cube/lye mixture?
I purchased indigo powder on Amazon and its soooo greeeen how do i make it blue?? Your soap is gorgeous, btw
I love your videos! I love watching even though the whole process seems intimidating. I have a question I hope someone can answer. What if you want to make just one bar to test a recipe, how would one do THAT manth???? Is that even possible??? Something I've always wondered. Thank you in advance!
Can we add the indigo and infuse directly to oils? Or at trace? Does it melt in a little bit of oil
Thank you so much, the soap is lovely also enjoyed the links regarding indigo
Thank you☺️
Thank you for beauty in simplicity 💚
Well, I didn't use your recipe, but I kept light oils and added silk. My soap turned green when poured into the mold and after 24 hrs ended up grayish- purple with pink spots. Not exactly what I expected. Oh well, I will give it another go.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you.💕🙏🏻🌿👍🌎❤️
thank you💝💝
How to get natural dyes? Can I add both stearic acid and sodium lactate to my soaps and how? Does hot process soap give us a harder soap? What about table salt
would you recommend making this soap with citric acid?
Hello tellervo;
thanks for the video.
I wanted to ask you how much supergreasing you normally use.
Thank you.
Greetings from Chile.
can i use unrefined shea butter instead of refined shea butter?
Can we use these soaps for face washing dear ??
Now I'd really like to try indigo! Thank you for the video!
After the oil cools down, add indigo lye to the oil???
Thank you .xx I love it .xx
Tried this but my batch turned light green. Not too surprised. I have read from other soap makers they have had the same issue
When did you test the lather? Is it after taking it from the mold, I mean the curing period.
On my list to do soap. Thank you
Please Hello please tell me how can I make natural pink color soap
Hello.. I am trying to make blue melt & pour with indigo but the color is turning out deep green or brown. Could you please advise on how to get that beautiful blue? TIA!
Do the blue color last after few weeks
Can we use woad or butter fly pea powder
Does it stay blue after 4 weeks ?
Can u make soap with dead sea mud?
When I made the soap mine turned out green even though it was blue in the blue water
?
Did you cure the soap or use it as it is
I love your videos, so clean and relaxing
Thank you☺️
Why are you melting indigo to lye? Can’t we add it to oil or to soap mixture
Plz make a video on how to make soap cup cakes. Thank u ☺️
Hi, I just made some lye water and added some Indigo powder to it and it turned brown instead of blue! I added citric acid to the water though and I noticed you didn't, is that why it turned brown lol? I guess I messed up the color 😔!?
I love ur soap videos Love love love
Thank you so much🤗
Can this be bought in the uk .x thank you .
Good afternoon, God bless you, I want to buy your book. How long have I had since I bought it to download and print it???
Does water discounting effect the color too?
Where can I buy some indigo powder
The only indigo powder I could find was green, it did turn blue but not the blue I expected.
I tried this method but my experiment failed, the color turned brown 😔 This is the third time I tried indigo and it failed, can you help me
Fantastic video. Does it stay that gorgeous colour after the cuting period? Do you know if adding sodium lactate change the colour?
Thank you! Yes it stays the same color and sodium lactate won't affect the color😊
@@tellervo. thank you
All of your soaps are so beautiful! How do you prevent soda ash from forming?
Thank you so much🤗 I use a water discount and try to keep the soap warm for several hours after pouring it in the mold
Where can I this dye?
Very beautiful 😍💙
Thank you💙
Love your video's. Can I ask on what temperature your oven was? Mine is a combi one (traditional oven and microwave in one) and the minimum temperature isn't that low so I'm not sure if I can do of this way
Thank you so much😊 I always put it on 50° celsius. Maybe it could work if you preheated your oven and turned it off right away after you put the soap in? I know some soap makers use heating pads also, maybe that could be an option for you.
@@tellervo. thx, will try it like that
Thank you so much for sharing can i ask does the indigo dye leave a stain on your hands after washing with it ? thanks so much for your help
No it doesn't stain the skin at all🙂
@@tellervo. thank you for the reply
Thank you for sharing the video and the recipe; I will have to try this, it mois amazing. 😊💙🧼
Thank you Garrett, let me know how it turns out☺️
Is this soap used for hands only or body?
Both🙂
Would it work to add the indigo to the oils, or must it go in the lye solution? Thank you!
Yes it would work but the color might come out different🙂
Its necessary to used cold water?, can i do it with normal tempere water?
Normal is fine🙂
Love watching your videos.Watched a lot of your videos in the last few days.
Loved the fact that you answered every question. I have a question what is 4% super fat? Is there any ingredient or grade of soap?
Is it OK to use a glass vessel while making a soap? Thank you!
Yes it's fine for the soap batter, just not for making the lye solution🙂
@@tellervo. thank you! :)
Gorgeous 💙
Thank you💙
Beautiful! Could these natural dyes work with a melt & pour soap? I find your videos very relaxing X
P.S - That colour :)
Thank you😊 Yes indigo works with melt and pour too!
Beautiful ❤️🥰
Thank you💝
Beautiful 👍🙏
Thank you☺
How long have you been making CP soap because you are such an amazing soap artist?
Thank you, it will be four years soon🙂
why the superfact is 4% ?
Hello do you sell your soap or just keep for your home?
I don't sell🙂
Hello, the video is very nice, thank you for sharing it.
I only have one question.
Use the calculator for soaps and make a comparison with the measurements of the ingredients, the only thing that comes out differently is the amount of water: in one it comes out 169G and in another 190. But here you tell us 120. What is the difference? ?? I await your valuable response, thank you very much.
Thank you☺ There is no set amount of water so you can use any of them, but there are lots of benefits to using less water, like being able to unmold the soap faster and overall I think it produces a nicer bar of soap. The numbers you have there are very high, if you want to use more water I would suggest a 33% lye concentration which is about 140 g water for this recipe. If you want to use 120 g of water, plug in ‘37% lye concentration’ in a lye calculator.
Bonjour. Vos videos sont toujours tres bien expliquées. Merci. Pouvez vous me dire de quelle couleur est votre poudre indigo et quel est son nom exact svp?La mienne est verte et ne donne pas de savon bleu
Thank you so much! The indigo powder I use is dark blue, it's fermented indigo that's used for dyeing, it's just called 'blue indigo'. The green indigo is unfermented and as you said it won't give a blue color
Thank you
The ingredient being indigo was unexpected! And yet, I came across it during my soap ingredients shopping session but missed it.
I'm curious, doesn't it bleed onto skin over time? I'm asking because this indigo powder is sold by my regular merchant as a complement to henna for hair coloration.
No it doesn't bleed at all - as long as you don't use too much. There are two kinds of indigo powders. As far as I know, the blue one can be used to color soap, and the green one is used for hair coloration among other things
Can Indigo powder be used in melt nd pour soap too?
yes :)
Can any soapers tell me when to add the sodium lactate to the process ?
When the lye solution has cooled down.
Add it at that time and go on with mixing with oils.
Hi, would it make a difference if I infused the Indigo powder in extra light olive oil? I gotten some Indigo from the Yarn Tree and used a 1/4 teaspoon in my lye water, but it didn't turn out as blue as yours, this Indigo cam from a fabric dye place too.
Your problem is like mine. I think the colour is the wrong. Idk why
hello, why didn't you add citric acid this time?
I forgot🙂
Nice👍👏😊
You got a really nice blue out of your indigo! The only time I tried adding it to the lye solution I got a big, clumpy mess which hid some lye crystals. Maybe your idea with the distilled water cubes would keep that from happening - will try! Thanks!
Oh no - I hope it works out next time☺️
Btw I used Serbian blue clay and those soaps' colour turned out like this one.
Oh really😍
Yeah
Será que é possível outro óleo sem ser oil castor óleo porque acho que no Brasil 🇧🇷 não deva ter pois nunca ouvi falar
Castor oil has a very unique fatty acid profile so it can't really be substituted
Hello 🥰🥰 Türkiye
Hi, if my product turns out to be good looking , all credit goes to you then.. ☺
I don't think so, you're the one who made it😊
The sound is almost comical ...
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Why Did The Devil’s Dye Make The Soap Blue?
Lol, everything was of the devil in olden times
