Cold process soap making: Using indigo powder to naturally colour soap with a drop swirl pattern

  • Today's soap is a real beauty! We are colouring the soap using only natural Indigo root powder, no mica's and no oxide's, this is as natural as they come!
    We are creating two different shades of blue using small amounts of the indigo powder and using these to colour portions of our cold process soap. We then use a drop swirl technique to create a pretty design in the soap. Finally, we topped it with dried Cornflower petals, which perfectly compliment the indigo shades.
    Our soaps are all palm oil free and this one is vegan friendly too.
    The ingredients we used for this soap are as follows:
    Water 220g
    Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) 109g
    Olive Oil 340g
    Coconut Oil 184g
    Shea Butter 75g
    Cocoa Butter 36g
    Castor Oil 57g
    Sweet Almond Oil 99g
    Indigo Root Powder 1tsp
    Cornflower Petals a handful for decoration

    The photo looks blue not grayish like it is during the video. Does this indigo powder colorant change to a bluer color as it cures? Thanks for sharing your beautiful creations and recipes.

      Hi Barbara, the colour does change and develop as it cures and I also think that the camera doesn't always record and show the best colour at all times - it definitely has a greyer tint to it on the video footage as opposed to how it looked in real life.

    This is a beautiful and classy soap. Is this indigo dye or indigo powder like you said in the intro??

    • @TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
      @TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you :-) It is Indigo powder - I meant to use indigo dye, but picked up the wrong packet and didn't realise until the end of the making process, which is why I mistakenly referred to it is indigo dye during the making part of the video!

    Can you use any caustic soda/sodium hydroxide to make soap?

    • @TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
      @TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Maria, In theory yes, as long as it is pure and hasn't had anything added to it. We purchase ours from a dedicated soap making store that sells many cosmetic ingredients but I do know of people who purchase from hardware stores.

    Did you miss out the almond oil in the list of ingredients?

      Hi Maria! Yes, it appears that I did! Thank you for pointing that out, I have amended the ingredients list now :-)
