Rosemary oil would be a great addition to your homemade shampoo bar as it stimulates hair growth. Thank you for sharing your recipe, I will try it.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing!

There's a great video here on youtube debunking rosemary oil's efficacy on stimulating hair growth by showing how poorly done and fishy the singular study that exists that makes these claims is.
edit: found it, it's by the channel Lab Muffin Beautfy Science th-cam.com/video/SW2NCv_vF2Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=XKtm67K1djh-kRVy
So, from a licensed hairdressers knowledge on how hair actually grows, there is nothing that you can apply to the hair externally to cause it to grow, because once hair has grown past/outside the scalp, it's considered dead. There is a tiny vein under each hair follicel inside the scalp, called the papilla, that feeds the hair and causes it to grow. If anything, a good healthy diet and vitamins are the only thing that can possibly help with hair growth, and maybe massaging your scalp😊
@@ren3171 It has worked for many, including me. Perhaps it's the massage you give your scalp, with the oil of your choice, that brings blood flow to the scalp that makes the difference.
I believe there is nothing better for our skin and hair than tallow. Just love it and I have a complete line of beef and bison tallow products from lip balms to shampoo shaving soaps and creams. It’s just sad that many people don’t know how similar tallow is to our natural skin sebum and how easy the body absorbs it. Thank you for the video. Love your baby.
It’s the best for skin!! I can’t use anything else anymore! Thanks for watching!
I'm all for making my own things and will definitely follow the steps to make my own shampoo in this video, but as I'm in Montana, I'm curious about your beef and bison tallow products. I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but will you please share the name of your company so that I might find it online to check out what you offer? Well you may not be able to post a direct link, you could spell it all out. Thank you kindly.

oleic acid is harmful to the natural skin barrier and causes irritation. It just isnt good for skin. Better to look for ingredients high in linoleic acid.
ive been looking all over internet and cant find a way to purchase your products...so you sell them? im not in a position to make my own at this time and sure want to try some tallow shampoo bars@@cliviascreations
I watch a lady in New Zealand, Dr Sam Bailey, and she went from using shampoos etc, to just washing her hair in Baking Soda (bicarbonate of soda). She said her hair now feels so soft and silky and she will never go back to using commercial shampoos ever again.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing! Just baking soda didn't work for me but everyone's different for sure. I also notice a different depending on how hard the water is.
@@FromScratchFarmstead Very possible, but she did say how it took 3 washes before it became soft and silky. However I do like the thought of your shampoo bars. Do you send to Australia?
@@FromScratchFarmstead She has made a video about it that you can find on her odyssee channel "Dr Sam Bailey". She also has a very interesting video about soap. All her videos are worth taking a look at! I did not lınk to it here because doing so tend to get ones comment not posted.

Sam Bailey and her husband are awesome for other health and medical advice...
Also their friends, Dr Tom Cowen & Andrew Kaufman.
My water is hard,.. can't use just B.Soda.. :(
I once heard that pH is affected by baking soda and vinegar, so many people have to switch out to other methods after a while because their oil production increases or scalp becomes flaky. This happened to me with vinegar rinses every 3 days. My scalp just produced non itchy flaking.
Thanks for the soap recipe. I taught my lady friend how to make lye soap. We tried so many recipes, colors, and fragrances. It was such fun. Unfortunately, we lost her in the pandemic. I had no motivation to make soap. All my supplies are just sitting around gathering dust. Your video was encouragement to me. Thank yiu.
I’m so sorry for your loss. ❤️ I hope you can get back to it and enjoy the process. ☺️
@suzannakoizumi8605 I'm sad to hear about you losing your friend. I watched this video as my mother, who declined from Alzheimer's and died from stroke, made tallow lye soap. This video made me smile thinking of good memories of her, and I hope for you, too, with your friend.❤🩹
So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Stay strong
Would she want you to continue? Perhaps do it as a sideline or just in remembrance of her? Find a name for your soap bar that epitomizes her, you could even use her name. What was her favorite color? Could you use natural dies like beetroot or turmeric to add to the soap bars? I lost my brother in December and he was buried on 28 Dec on his 50th birthday. We should cherish everything about those gone too soon and find ways to remember them always.

When making soap, I use ice cubes for half the weight of my water when weighing it out. That way the lye solution doesn't get nearly as hot and is ready to use quicker. Good tutorial!
Someone else mentioned that too!! Such a good idea - thanks for sharing!!
Would it be good for color treated hair?
I am 67 years old and have always used Kirk's coco- hardwater castile soap ( made from coconut oil.) Kirk's has been around since 1829. Long time!

I still buy it.👍😃
That is what I use too. It sudses in hard water.
What about conditioner?
I'm currently only half-way through this video and you are doing an exceptional job. However, it is so hard to concentrate with your adorable baby in the frame. Don't change a thing, this is the most enjoyable video because of the unexpected surprise of seeing such a beautiful little person while I am learning how to make shampoo ☺

Hey tallow is what my grandparents used to make soaps 😮😮😮 i always thought it was disgusting but now i know it's good.

I made this soap a little over 6 weeks ago. I've been using it for 2 weeks. I absolutely love the soap! We use it for hand soap, body soap and also for our hair. It's really an all-purpose soap. I do love it especially for my hair! No need for conditioner 💯🤩
The only thing I tweaked was.... I cut the amount of olive oil in half and use shea butter for the other half. I really wanted a shea butter in my soap. And it's still turned out perfectly 😊
Yay! So glad you having been liking it! Thanks for sharing this and the tweaks you made. So helpful!
Hi I live in Greece and use my 3 or 4 year old olive oil. The left over oil to make soap.
Fresh edible oil has low oxides and you need more, the soap will be soft and won't harden the same as old olive oil
Hope this is helpfull
Very interesting and helpful! Thank you for sharing!
any tips to purchase good olive oil from greece from one source? I live in US
Some Native American tribes used bear grease on their hair, and the English in Tudor England used tallow and a really high quality comb to keep their hair super clean…without water!
Interesting!! I know some people have used bear fat instead of tallow in this recipe and have said great things! Thanks for sharing!
I have been making soap for almost 20 years, but I love to watch others for recipe ideas. You did a fantastic job explaining the process and safety measures. I have yet to find a good shampoo bar, but admittedly haven't tried more than a few. I'll have to give this a try. Thank you!!

My experience mirrors yours and like you, I've tried all the natural shampooing methods. It's either gross and itchy dirty feeling scalp or dry, brittle breaking hair. For the sake of sanity and my hair, I eventually gave up and went back to store bought shampoo. Thank you for walking me through this process, I feel totally empowered now to try soap making and I will start with this shampoo bar. ❤️❤️
It's so frustrating, isn't it!? Definitely try the shampoo bar, it felt like the unicorn for me that I was searching for! Thanks for watching!

That is an enormous amount of lye. It only takes 117 grams of lye for a block that size. I have made tons of soap. Also the lye is chemically mixing with that plastic jug you are using, that's why you are supposed to use unbreakable glass like pyrex to mix it in. Your hair looks great. I can't wait to try this.
Thanks for watching!
So are you going to use all her measurements regarding the lye.??
There are many lye calculators to help with the calculation
This is about the third CP soap recipe I have tried, I have pretty dry hair and I'm PICKY when it comes to shampoo. I want it clean but not stripped, but still soft😆 THIS WAS IT. Hi from Israel❤
Five weeks ago I made the shampoo bar by your recipe. It makes my hair clean, soft, shine and flexible. 🎉But I used an apple vinegar rinse. Next time I want to wash my hair just by shampoo.

Good for you!❤. My hair is growing back since my last chemotherapy treatment on January 8th, so my hair will be ripe for this tallow soap/shampoo! Thank you for your recipe!

I have used lye based soap most of my life as I am allergic to most of the additives in the "store bought" soap. Mom always made her soap and grated it into wash water for clothes. Dad and I both were allergic, I could not even swim in the river as it had to many chemicals in it. Thank you for sharing, I will have to try this with the different oils. Thank you again.
Very interesting! What oils do you typically use in your soaps? Thanks for watching!

Did she handwash her laundry? I just know that old school soap like lye based soap damages modern washers. They're set up for detergent use only. I'm afraid to try anything different.
Love this, I have been wanting to make my own and now, thanks to your channel, I will be making my own tallow soap/shampoo bars, I actually purchased a grass fed grass finished tallow shampoo bar and never detoxed my hair, I just started using the shampoo bar and the very first usage, I was amazed and will never go back to shampoo again! Maybe I just got lucky? I have mid back length, long hair and natural wavy/curly hair, the tallow shampoo bar made my hair feel thicker and much much more healthy! I have been using the shampoo bar for about a month now and I love how my hair feels and looks! Thank you again for sharing your recipe for amazing tallow shampoo bars!

at 9:01 I also would not use metal spoon because it reacts with the metal wich I prefer not to. although it might seem harmless for the process itself. Its just an extra ingredient I don't want there. I only use wooden spoons for that.
Thanks for the tip!
I believe lye reacts with aluminum but not stainless steel, maybe I'm wrong?
@@lisajosskixassyou're correct stainless steel is okay to use
Also a tree branch with the bark stripped off works well and doesn't cost anything.

The Wife (capital T, capital W) and I were on the North Shore of Oahu about 10 years ago. Took a trip to the North Shore Soap Factory in Waialua. That visit stuck in my mind and shortly after getting home I started wondering what it would take to make my own soap. Turns out there is a soap supply company a few miles away in Chandler AZ, run by wonderful people. Been making my own soap for years now and couldn't imagine not using it. Your list of oils is what I use for my standard recipe but my ratios are a little different. A relative asked about a shampoo bar so if you don't mind, I'll try to match your ratios to fit my mold. Thanks and take care of that little cutie in the back-pack.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing! I hope this recipe works out for you :)

As far as dish soap goes, I find a pure one oil soap with zero super fat works great. I have made using coconut oil works pretty good for me. One and done
Cool! Thanks for sharing!! I'm still playing around with recipes for one I love!
I've been making this exact soap bar for years. The only problem I've encountered is the plumbing bills. It clogs drains after a while and they have to be rotorootered every so often. In the summertime, I've been shampooing outside in the yard and the plumbing bills have gone down a bit with less need to call the plumber.
Good to know.
How would soap cause your drains to clog? Soap dissolves in water. This confuses me.
I need to have my son snake out my tub drain. Now I know why. I usually use my homemade bars in the tub.
Holy cow! I’ve been making soap for the last 20 years….and yes, my drains need cleaned all the time…didn’t realize it was my soap😕
I can not explain it but even my toilet drain pipe below the floor develops a thick gelatinous film. It actually causes failure to flush events to become more and more frequent. Eventually the toilet has to come off and it has to be cleaned up. Perhaps it is alive or something. Maybe we are feeding a mysterious sewer slime colony with all this healthy stuff.
Omgosh you are speaking my language!! all of this is is great
I just watched a warning that said “The more people who advertise “how to tell the diff between real and fake olive oil or over processed or chemical additives” the companies will change their labeling and continue selling their harmful products.
Ugh! So frustrating!
Buy direct from farmers 😊❤
I also use a recipe for hair with these 4 fats/oils - inspired by the bumblebee apothecary. I add nana mint (moroccan spear mint) and lemon balm essential oil, and also 2 TBS of ghassoul powder and 2 TBS of efficcient microorganisms to 1,5 kg of soap. I heard that some people put EM in their soap and thought I'd experiment with that too. My husband and I both love our hair soap.
By the way, the castor oil also increases the foam in soaps that's why it's found in many recipes. Usually only 5%, but for shampoo bars 10% is better to create a good amount of lather.
By the way, I render my tallow from fat that butchers give me for free, since fat is viewed as junk today. The easiest way is to cook the fat chunks in water and then blend them once they're soft. Afterwards one can keep them on the stove to simmer for a while so all the fat is extracted, then pour the m through a sieve. The first time, I cut 3 kgs of fat into tiny little pieces which took ages, but one can skip that step by boiling the entire cuts right from the start.
Love it!! Thanks for sharing all of these great tips!
This is great. You did a wonderful job explaining everything. I will try this recipe. I do have a few questions. How long would you say one bar lasts? Do you shampoo daily? Did you use a specific hair detox recipe when you first started? About how many times does it take to detox your hair before using the shampoo bar? Thank you for making this video! I use tallow to make a face moisturizer.
This 3-4 months for our family but we are more in the shower 1-2 times a week camp so that helps stretch it out! I didn’t do a detox before because it had been a few years since using commercial products on my hair when I started using the shampoo bar but I think when I initially made the switch to natural shampoos my hair could have benefited from a detox! Here’s a video to check out on detoxing hair th-cam.com/video/R90l_cGxegM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TI-eYbeDg8Q60vEE

Did you know that lye was originally made from wood ash. You would need a very clean fire hearth and very pure and good wood. But, then the ash is put in water and the alkaline lye is created. Good wood must have all kinds of mineral and trace element properties that are good for hair and scalp too?
This wood ash solution would work with pig fat too. But, thank you for teaching us that beef fat is so good because previously I had only heard of pig fat and lye for making lovely soap for hair and body.

I have read that if you use potassium hydroxide instead of lye, you can grate the bars and dilute them with water to make a liquid soap. (Unsure about exact measurement changes)
Interesting - thanks for sharing and watching! Worth looking into!
Potassium hydroxide is the lye used to make liquid soap
Potassium hydroxide is used to make liquid soap, not bar soap. You can find good videos about how to make liquid soap on TH-cam.
Why would you want bars over liquid? Or liquid over bars. Is it just convenient?

What's this doing to the drain after it hardens?
From my understanding during the saponification process, the fat/lye reaction changes it from being a fat or grease to soap. Maybe someone has some better science to chime in with here :). From our experience of using this bar for several years, we've never had any drain issues!
Nothing
It dissolves just like any other soap

Hey there! I’m loving your videos! Thank you, this was very straight forward and helpful. Is there any special aftercare instructions for washing rinsing out lye dishes? Do you keep your soap making stuff separate from things your use for food such as immersion blender and measuring cups?

Ooh! Wolf berries. I've never heard of those. Thank you for sharing!
I’m a new subscriber! Love this video & shared it out ❤
Awesome!! Thank you so much!!
Thanks for your recipe
You’re welcome!!
I love the color of the finished soap! I need to try to make some again! I was so freaked out because i thought you were going to mix the lye water solution w/ your baby in the room lol! Nice video.
Ah! I've gotten a few comments about that! I don't mess with lye! Thanks for watching and I hope you make some again!
I'm rendering some beef tallow at the moment. I don't have castor oil but I'll play around with my recipe and make some tallow soap soon😊
Yay!! Enjoy!!
I must admit, the soap making content AND the still of you wearing your sweet lil babe are what drew me to this video. I try to wear my baby all the time when I'm doing things around the house so he can enjoy and learn too. I recently discovered a Japanese style of baby wearing called onbuhimo - maybe you've heard of it - and it places your baby up high on your back giving it a great vantage point! Since it's clear to me that you want to share your work with your LO I thought I would share this with you. Thanks for the content, you've got my sub!
I haven't heard of this! She'd love this. Is there a specific wrap or carrier that you use? Thanks for sharing!
@@FromScratchFarmstead I'm actually in the process of making a decision between a mei dai, which is Chinese, and the onbuhimo, but at some point I'm going to just have to choose 😂 The mei dai offers more carrying styles (front, hip, back) but the onbuhimo is super quick and simple. That being said, you can modify a mei dai into a onbuhimo... 😵💫😵💫😵💫 Lol too much I know. I'll probably just get the onbuhimo for now bc I'm tired of the time consuming stuff (like a wrap) that me and lil dude are sort of over. SORRY info overload!!!
Thank you so much for this. I've been wanting to try a shampoo bar and Inspired to soap make again. Will you be exploring making a separate conditioning bar? Mostly for a 'no poo' days when you just want to condition.
Thanks again beautiful work! 🙏😊
I’ll have to experiment with this!! Thanks for watching!
Been making my share of pastrami lately, always have lots of trimmed fat to save render down. Thank for posting: I know what to do with my tallow now beside using it for cooking. .
Yea, awesome!! Thanks for watching!
that is a beautiful recipe, and clear video. I've got alot of tallow to use, and when I get castor oil tomorrow I will be doing this. Thank you, I have been making herbal infused olive oil, and I was wondering if you have tried that instead of essential oils... 😇
Hi! I haven't tried an herbal infused olive oil but that sounds lovely!! You should definitely be able to do that!
thanks heaps, my scales arrived yesterday, I am soon to make my first solo soap... I will let you know.
@@FromScratchFarmstead good morning... I made my soap yesterday, during mixing it went a weak chocolate colour, but on cooling it is green! I didn't have enough infused oil (bright green) so it isn't as strong as it will be next time.
My soap split in the centre during the first 12 hours... so I am off to google why that is, it seems quite delicious at this point... thanks heaps. Juli
Beautiful video.❤
Thank you!!
