Whether you have a dishwasher or do your by hand, the key is to get a process as Steph says. I found myself tired last night with dishes that I didn’t want to do. I just thought “ just get em done and then shine your sink!” It took less than 5 minutes and I know I will be excited to go down to a clean counter and sink this morning. What a nice gift to my future self. I try to wash up the dishes as I go thru the day. Mornings I put all the dry ones away while breakfast is cooking since I’m already there. We are a family of 3, and I have a dish washer, but I rarely use it. I just wash as I go and air dry them on a over the sink roll up dish rack and dish mat. I should use my dish washer more often lol I thin you are doing a wonderful job on this series. I think the Fly Lady system is good, but complicated. I never did this system because I was afraid I would fail! I was such a perfectionist that I would start cleaning and end up cleaning for HOURS and I still couldn't get it "perfect". So then I dreaded starting to clean because I had made the process endless, exhausting and discouraging! Doing it this way is helping me not have to get my home to the impossible state of perfection (which doesn't even) exist and be satisfied and proud of myself for just making it better. Thank you so much for doing these videos so I can learn from a regular person, like myself, who falls and gets up and trys again (which is so human to do)! I am keeping reminding myself: plan, timer, and just try my best (with the timer helping me from overdoing it - which is absolutely key for me). That makes cleaning rewarding and not endless! I have four children 7, 6, 4 and 2. I was reading "what should 7 yr olds be able to do". DISHES! my 7,6 and 4 yr old do the dishes now!!! WOW what a difference this makes for our household.
It has been a game changer for me - I put the dishwasher on every night before bed and empty first thing on the morning. After breakfast it takes two minutes to tidy up and leave the kitchen nice for lunchtime (we work from home). We also stated a “4pm quick tidy” chore so that the kitchen is tidied before dinner prep starts (just in case anyone hasn’t put their dishes in the dishwasher during the day!). That way whomever is making dinner starts with clean, clear counter space to work. Tip: if your dishwasher isn’t full at night and you don’t want to run it only 75% full, look around for something that needs cleaning - I put my sink drying rack in there sometimes or the dish I keep my sink scrubby in, etc.
I love having a system for dishes! There are only 2 of us so we didn’t always run the dishwasher every day. This made it a pain to deal with as quite often I had to wash a sink full of dishes by hand as the rest was in the dishwasher being washed. I heard this tip on the clutterbug channel. Cassie recommended running the dishwasher once a day even if it is not full! It actually wastes less water than just running the dishwasher! I had never thought of this, This establishes a routine just as you say. I then empty my dishwasher in the morning and have it ready to be loaded throughout the day! This is a genius idea! 💕
Have 2 teens that live in kitchen ...dishes are all day thing. But i night i started implementing the shinny sink. So mornings i just have to put up clean dishes. No dishwasher. We all pitch in on kp duty. Thanks stephanie
One of my 6 year old daughters chores is to empty the dishwasher. She can't put the dishes away yet but emptying the dishwasher to the counter top helps motivate me to keep my dishes clean. Having an open floor plan means I can see the counter full of clean dishes and put them away as I am in the kitchen for a minute or 2. My 4 year olds chore is to put away the silverware. I put away sharp knives and she does the rest. I'm sure your little girls can help you with those things. I believe they are close in age if I remember correctly.
It seems so simple... run the dishwasher at night, unload in the morning, dirty dishes in the dishwasher throughout the day - repeat. But seriously, this was so life changing to me!
How we use our kitchen is suuuper important. Me too moved things around. I already have the habit to keep the dirty dishes clean, I yet need to conquer keeping the dried ones away lol. But I am still on my way every morning while coffee is brewing, I put them easy. Now I need to do something similar after dinner. Ive tried but have never kept up. I will not give up.
We do our dishes by hand since our dishwasher broke 2 years ago and our routine right now is doing them after lunch and right after dinner. After lunch I just let it air dry and put it away before cooking. After dinner the kids help drying and putting away. Thank you for sharing your routine! You are inspiring😀
GREAT VIDEO STEPH YOU ARE HELPING SO MANY WITH THESE BABY STEPS. I haven't had a dishwasher for years. There is only the 2 of us at home . I can wash and put away dishes in no time now. Since following Diane in Denmark the last couple of years I wouldn't think about going to bed without putting my washed dishes away as I want to get up in the morning to no dishes and a nice shiny sink. XXXX MARGARET IN CYPRUS
Thank you for walking us through this system, Steph! I have wanted to implement it for a long while (since watching you!) but I kept getting stuck. Your printable and these videos are so great! I appreciate them a lot.
1-2 people at home due to work travel. Once a week dishwasher, but simpler to wash by hand daily. I lived in a home for six years without a dishwasher. Hubby wanted to install, but I preferred hand washing as needed.
When I got my kitchen remodeled last year, I opted to get rid of my dishwasher. I live alone and don’t generate a lot of dishes. My goal now is to wash everything as soon as I use it and leave nothing in the sink, definitely not overnight.
One way I did this in the past was to only have enough dishes for what I normally needed, I had 4 large plates, 4 small and 4 bowls... I had a lot more stuff for baking but if I wanted to eat I had to do the dishes first!
Clean as I go, immediately soak pans (that can soak) while I’m eating, and once my plate or bowl is ready for its bath, the others are almost clean. So, the hang up for me is drying. I stack the dishes and call the kitchen closed. I occasionally dry by hand, if I’ve a lot of dishes, such as meal prep or baking. (Who am I kidding, it’s always baking). Develop a system that gets the dishes back on their shelves.
My husband and I have a tendency to skip dinner dishes. So I have a pile to do in the morning. And I got it cleared up this morning by watching the shine sink video. It’s nice to have it almost done. Still gotta put it away.
I see I am not the only early bird. Dishes,my least favorite task. I dont have a dish washer. But it is much nicer to wash a few several times a day than a large load every night. And much nicer to cook breakfast in the morning. I also keep a minimal supply of dishes so I cant let them build up.
Love this! I started doing this habit a few months ago as I noticed being at home for work now we were having a lot more dishes and if the dishwasher wasn’t emptied it made the sink quickly pile up. Now I have gotten in the habit of putting my breakfast together and while I wait for the kettle and/or toaster I empty the dishwasher in that time - no more wasting the 2-5 minutes waiting for breakfast on my phone and it is fun to challenge yourself to see if you can beat a natural timer such as the kettle or toaster :)
Where I live, water use is cheaper between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., so I am already highly motivated to do dishes in the evening, including overnight. Zero problem adopting this habit.
What a fresh start for September! I've been in a rut for a while, but your system has given me boost. It's been so nice to wake up to a clean kitchen, and all the items on checklist go by so quickly. FYI I use a sink scrub of Baking soda & essential oil, my fav right now is lavender. Looking forward to the rest of the month! Thanks
We don't have a working dishwasher so its a different type of routine for us. There is always dishes to wash so we have to be okay with a bit of dishes waiting to be done. When I tried the whole clear counter thing (when I first started fly lady a few years ago) I ended up crying a lot. Changing my perception to being okay with a bit of dishes works for my mental health.
I recently got a dishwasher and can’t stand leaving dirty dishes to gather in there till I do a load . So I refuse to use it . I just wash everything by hand 🙈.
We have a dishwasher and I tend to hand wash my own things while everyone else puts there's in the dishwasher, I have back issues and find the twisting/bending painful so it's just easier on my body to take 30 seconds and wash after use. My old house was being renovated and didn't have water in the kitchen so I had to bring it from the bathroom. Fortunately the drains worked, but just having the running water is such a blessing now! I hope you find a method that works for you, with or without a dishwasher!
I start a hot soapy bin as I cook dinner and wash asap. Teenager empties dishwasher every morning. Everyone loads up own dishes into dishwasher. Other teenager helps with hand washing and putting those dishes away.
I use a timer for everything or else I go on forever!! Stopping when the timer goes off (5minutes) gives me a light at the end of the tunnel! I have to be strong to stop but for me it is key to my success or failure. Makes cleaning a fun game and keeps me focused which was a HUGE problem for me before the timer!! 👍👍💐 Where can I download the check off list you use? Thank you for teaching me "progress not perfection" and just making it better is success.
The biggest habit change that has helped me with dishes is to completely clean dishes every night and set the dishwasher to run while we sleep -- even if it's not completely full. I used to wait until it was 100% full, but then in the middle of the next day it has to be run and dirty dishes are piling up and we're always playing catch-up. Every morning I empty the dishwasher before even creating dirty breakfast dishes -- usually while the coffee brews. It's perfect because it takes the water a few minutes to heat up in the kettle and then 4 minutes to steep in my French press, and that's usually just enough time to empty the dishwasher. It has taken a lot of repetition (i.e., nagging), but now my teenaged kids and husband are "trained" to always put their dirty dishes straight into the dishwasher (which is available since I ran it overnight and emptied it first thing in the morning) rather than leaving them in the sink. They still usually leave hand-wash-only things like our good knives out and I end up doing those throughout the day, but I'm willing to make that concession since everything else is running so much more smoothly. 😊
I agree with keeping the dishwasher empty , we clean as we cook because i hate cleaning up after dinner. So i wash everything before i eat. Even if that means taking dirty dishes out of the dishwasher to make room for the dinner stuff and just washing by hand. This is rare but sometimes i have to do it and will do this before i even start dinner. That way everyone can just put their plates in the dishwasher after dinner and all i have to do it turn it on before i go to bed. My family still doesn’t load the dishwasher properly i have just let it go. I don’t care how it’s loaded anymore. I have my dishwasher fluid in there from my morning routine when i empty it and they add the fluid for after the family loads it, this way, I don’t even have to see the mess inside 😂🤣 Everything gets washed just fine.
I’d love it if you did a video on cleaning up WHILE cooking...many people have bad habits pertaining to cooking....using way too many dishes for the job, and not dealing with a dish AT THE TIME of using it. It IS possible for your kitchen to look just as good when you’re done cooking as it did when you started. *Leave No Trace*
I think I’m going to set a goal of running dishwasher after dinner and having one of my kiddos unload it before bed. I thought about it and getting up knowing I need to unload the dishwasher just was uninspiring. So if we run the dishwasher after dinner, it will be ready to unload before bed. Then, I’ll wake up with a truly clean kitchen.
I used to think that unloading the dw was a massive job. Then one day I timed it. Much to my surprise, it took less than 5 minutes to unload. Changed my dish washing routine completely. Now my process is like Steph’s. Additionally, once the dw is unloaded no one is allowed to put dishes in the sink or on the counter. They all go straight into the dishwasher. And, yes, that incluides my husband and grandchildren!. For those of you with no dishwasher, i can relate because I went quite some time without one. The bad habits I developed then transferred right over to using a dishwasher. So find a system that results in no dirty dishes at the end of the day. You will be glad you did.
For my house we reduced our # of regular dishes so we fill the dishwasher when we've used them all. I can't let dishes pile up because they always fit into the dishwasher. When we have company we use the fun china set. I realized we were gifted new coffee mugs for Christmas when I had mugs on the counter, some of those got new homes. ☺️
@@ritasmith4335 The problem is only that I can't put one in my flat.. it's too small and it's just a student flat... but I can't wait for the day I don't have to wash the dishes every day xD
i don't have a dishwasher so I do mine when doing dinner. then as soon as I'm done i wash last bits up. and in the day i keep my washing up bowl under my sink, xx
I really love your kitchen tiles!! When my ex partner and I split up, I was adamant that I would be keeping the dishwasher!! I dislike emptying it, but hey ho. I've always called it the magic cupboard - you put dirty things in and voilà!! Clean things done out!!
My husband is in charge of the dishes and dishwasher because he can get 3 times as much in. The only thing I need to work on is making sure the stuff on the drainage is put away and I do that when I shine my sink.
A bowl of hot soapywater as you cook . Then get everyone to wash up their own plate if you have lots of older kids .If not I am afraid you will just have to wash them . If you do this straight after you finished eating it doesn't take long. I always try not to cook and eat too late when I am just too tired
Do it. I have a family of four, got tired of being the maid, so I took everything except four plates, four bowls, four forks, four cups, etc and put everything else in a tote in the attic. Sure my family thought I’d finally snapped but guess who never does an hour of dishes by hand anymore! 👍🏻
The only time in my adult life that my kitchen wasn't a habitual pain and mess was when I had a dishwasher. Counting down until I get to use one again!
Before I had a dishwasher, I used to rinse and stack the dishes neatly on the counter or in one side of the sink. That way they were out of the way as much as possible, plus all ready to wash, when I was ready to do that.
What i do, is rinse the dishes then put them in a plastic tub under the sink until after the evening meal.( I figure a dishwasher is just a dirty dish cupboard.) Then i shine up my sink and wash the dishes. In the morning , i put them away and wipe my shiny sink down. It's not washing up i hate, it's looking at dirty dishes!! 😉
Wash up after 2 or 3 meals a day, put away dishes washed up after last meal as you're cooking the next. When washing up race yourself with a timer (I could do all my dishes and tidy kitchen / dining table in 10 mins) or get a good podcast to listen to. We got a dishwasher 2 months ago and it is the best - so if you can, definitely get one! Clearing up after meals becomes a 2/3 minute job rather than 10 mins.
Have a bowl of hot soapywater ready for when you finish eating. Put the dishes in the hot water as you wipe down your table and countertops. If you wash them straight away it takes only minutes. Rinse them with hot water and they take seconds to dry and a few minutes to put away . Any pots and pans should be soaking while you are eating. I haven't used or had a dishwasher for years . It used to take just as long to load and unload and take care of cleaning the dishwasher
Fill your sink part way full with warm soapy water. As you prepare the meal put anything in there used for cooking. 9nce the meal is over you can use that saopy water to scrub off the dishes, then rinse. I'd let air dry after breakfast and put away before lunch, same with air drying after lunch and put away before starting dinner. Then after dinner if you rinse with very hot water and wait just 20 mins they'll all be mostly dry and can put away.
I don't have a dishwasher. So idk what system would be good. Bc dishes are drying in a strainer on the counter. So there's always dishes in a strainer, to be put up and dirty dishes to wash and then back in the strainer..
I do not recommend hiding dirty dishes in a container under the sink or leaving them in the open dishwasher. I got cockroaches at home after that. It was hard to kick them out. The only thing that helps me is washing dishes right after eating. And Yes, the dishwasher would help a lot, but unfortunately I don't have it.
Yes I think that would happen her in Cyprus too. They would have a field day if I left dirty dishes under the sink as they like dark damp places. It is around 40 c here in Cyprus at the moment. Is that a Greek name you have
Agree wholeheartedly- just putting dirty dishes in hot soapy water helps get them easier and faster anyway when you have a moment. I tried putting a few dirty dishes in the oven for a little while but I knew they were there and it made me dread taking them out with dried up food to clean off! Plus, it was gross to me knowing they were in there. I think this a great system but no system is perfect for everyone!
@@margaretsofocleous8137 Yes, insects always like a hot and wet place. I won't store dishes like Marla Flaylady recommends ever again. I have very hot weather in Russia right now. And I live in an apartment building. If we have sloppy neighbors, then all the residents of the house suffer from insects.
@@varvarawhitecat I live in Australia a very warm country. After meals, I fill my sink with hot water, let dishes soak and them put them in the dishwasher. I put on a load maybe every 1-2 days. I cannot tolerate dirty dishes....I use powdered dish washing detergent at 50% of the recommended dose. When the cycle is done, I open the door/ slide out the draws and allow to dry naturally.
I've been there done that. Know how hard things can get having had 3 children in 4 years. I wish I had known something like the flylady system when mine were toddlers. In summer I would get breakfast get us all washed or showered and dressed a quick vacuum and get out to the park with a picnic. Winters were much harder.
I try to load , run, and unload right after dinner, then the snack- middle of the night dishes in theory get put into the emptied dishwasher. I am working with the men on this.I hate to come into a trashed out kitchen in the morning, when I left it pristine the night before.
Steph, the bottle on your counter with dish soap, is that deluded soap with water or just pure dish soap? And is that the original bottle or one you refill when it's empty?
I have a family of 11. We must run the dishwasher at least 3 times a day. But young kids are always putting food in the dishwasher, so it is always breaking down and must do them by hand. 2 hours per day when that happens. 😕
I think I'm going to start emptying the dishwasher in the morning too, so I can fill it up as I go. My teenager is in charge of dishes in our house, but this way I wont have as many sitting by the sink all day until he gets round to them!
I'm kinda watching backwards but that's ok. I need to do a load and a half of dishes each day. Plus the pots and pans. So. Load, unload, load or unload, load, unload.
I think that when you get to know Steph , you will find she is neither bold or assuming. She just loves to show people how the flylady system has helped her and she just hopes it helps others

I also love having a dishwasher ready to put dirties in all day. I don't always make that happen but when I do it's great!
Very sensible routine
LOVE the drawer that your dishes are in!! Such a fabulous use of space💜 this series is so fun! I am doing pretty good at keeping up with each day
GREAT VIDEO STEPH YOU ARE HELPING SO MANY WITH THESE BABY STEPS.
I like watching TH-cam or listening to audiobooks with my headphones when I’m doing my dishes after dinner.
I prefer to wash my dishes by hand. Wash them after every meal, and clean kitchen at night ready for the next day!! 😊
When I got my kitchen remodeled last year, I opted to get rid of my dishwasher. I live alone and don’t generate a lot of dishes. My goal now is to wash everything as soon as I use it and leave nothing in the sink, definitely not overnight.
Good thinking
One way I did this in the past was to only have enough dishes for what I normally needed, I had 4 large plates, 4 small and 4 bowls... I had a lot more stuff for baking but if I wanted to eat I had to do the dishes first!
Marisa S Yup... I own two large plates and three bowls! My cats have more dishes than I have 😂
Clean as I go, immediately soak pans (that can soak) while I’m eating, and once my plate or bowl is ready for its bath, the others are almost clean.
That's a great idea, arrange your kitchen cabinets and drawers to match the function! 😀😀 Thank you for this series, Steph!
I like how you put dishes as one item instead of breaking up the jobs it involves. Easier to keep track of!
I always have some dishes too. but I feel as long as I do them at least after supper good enough is good enough
I love LOVE your kitchen tiles. They remind me of New York Subway white but yours a nice teal/blue. 👍 Where did you find them? Very nice kitchen. 👍
When people have a dishwasher and think doing the dishes is a chore.
Lol come wash mine by hand please!
THIS
Oh, i hear you , sister! 😜
That's what I always nurse over
I recently got a dishwasher and can’t stand leaving dirty dishes to gather in there till I do a load .
The videos of september 2020 are very good done. They are very clear.
Where can I download the check off list you use?
Steph you look amazing!!! As soon as we get the family moved into the RV I’m picking up with your day one video!!!

Thank you for helping us work in steps to a clean house!!!👏👏👏
I’m a little behind but following. Biggest take away has been do a little bit everyday. Slow & steady wins the race.
I'm loving building habits with you this way!
Another motivating video. Thank you. x
The hotspot time has made a crazy good difference to me. I live in a tiny space so doing that is key.
Don't have a dishwasher but I'm on top of this dish system yay me👏😀 thanks Steph
When you don't own a dishwasher😅😭
I'm getting old....my wishes are now a dishwasher and not just some random stuff😅🤣
Definitely buy one- life changing
@@ritasmith4335 The problem is only that I can't put one in my flat.. it's too small and it's just a student flat... but I can't wait for the day I don't have to wash the dishes every day xD
I know this is off topic, but I love the blue brick backsplash. Mind sharing where you got it? 😉
i don't have a dishwasher so I do mine when doing dinner. then as soon as I'm done i wash last bits up. and in the day i keep my washing up bowl under my sink, xx
New to your channel. What a good idea! Going to give it a try! 🌹
What is the name /brand of that kitchen tike backsplash?! I LOVE IT!!
Love! Looks like we use the same dishwashing soap. Mrs Myers bottle filled with palmolive?
I really love your kitchen tiles!!
When my ex partner and I split up, I was adamant that I would be keeping the dishwasher!! I dislike emptying it, but hey ho. I've always called it the magic cupboard - you put dirty things in and voilà!! Clean things done out!!
This is the best habit I got into. No more piling them up.
My husband is in charge of the dishes and dishwasher because he can get 3 times as much in. The only thing I need to work on is making sure the stuff on the drainage is put away and I do that when I shine my sink.
Thank you for sharing this. I don't have a dish washer, so I'll have a think about how I work this. I think it's a real help
A bowl of hot soapywater as you cook . Then get everyone to wash up their own plate if you have lots of older kids .If not I am afraid you will just have to wash them . If you do this straight after you finished eating it doesn't take long. I always try not to cook and eat too late when I am just too tired
@@margaretsofocleous8137 Thank you. I'll do that.
@@lyssamedana2224 I just love getting up in the morning not having to start my day putting away dishes from the night before.

Love your top!
Dishes are my most household chore! Can never seem to get a handle on them. I think I need to reduce the number of dishes we own again.
Do it. I have a family of four, got tired of being the maid, so I took everything except four plates, four bowls, four forks, four cups, etc and put everything else in a tote in the attic. Sure my family thought I’d finally snapped but guess who never does an hour of dishes by hand anymore! 👍🏻
@@PamsPrettyPlants such a good idea!! Then I can grab them out for company when rarely needed.
I do not have a dish washer so i hand wash all my dishes i also get kids to rinse there dishes once they have finished using them.
The only time in my adult life that my kitchen wasn't a habitual pain and mess was when I had a dishwasher. Counting down until I get to use one again!
But what’s your best strategy for people who don‘t have the comfort of a dish washer?
You eat in restaurants daily, you are fancy.!!lol
Hello, do you have a dishwasher soap hack eco-friendly?
Not yet! I am on the lookout!
@@TheSecretSlob Great! I'm a Portuguese follower. You change my life! Thank you Steph.
Ew, i do exactly that, but no roaches at my house, thank goodness!
I'm right in the middle of the toddler tunnel 🤣 no helping, lots of destruction, lots of messes.
I've been there done that. Know how hard things can get having had 3 children in 4 years. I wish I had known something like the flylady system when mine were toddlers. In summer I would get breakfast get us all washed or showered and dressed a quick vacuum and get out to the park with a picnic. Winters were much harder.
@@margaretsofocleous8137 yes I've found the more time we spend out of the house, the less I have to clean 🤣
