I lived in 90210 for seven years and drove by this regularly. The guesthouse is actually the only original Pickfair building on the site. Those cherubs are original but not the wrought iron P on the gate. This was Douglas Fairbanks project of course - the man who put Beverly Hills on the map. The fact B movie actress Pia Zadora had it demolished is the greatest architectural tragedy in BH history. A Chinese billionaire owns it now.
I visited the original Pickfair in 1985 when Jerry Buss owned it. It was by 21st century mega mansion standards not very impressive. Average size you'd find in any mansion in old Pasadena. Lots of carved in place woodwork and paneling that had been feeding swarms of termites for 50 years. The support beams were literally eaten thru. A staircase had just collapsed and it was structurally unsound. Smelled like grandma's house.
Chaplin had this house built in 1922 and remained here until 1952, when he was denied re entry into the US. His wife returned to sell his studio and this house. Summit was initially Cove Way and renamed in the 1930's..
Those huge, old mansions are beautiful. It's beyond me, I definitely don't understand why someone would want to change a historical building. It may not havea placque upon it, but it's still historical! Charlie's house was beautiful às well! Thank you, again Jordan, great vlog!!! 🌼
I really dislike Pia Zadora for destroying this amazingly beautiful house. I would have been happy to have Fairbanks and Pickford as ghosts if I could have owned this house.
And across from him, the Chaplin house, was owned by George Hamilton and lived in with his girlfriend, brother Bill, mother (scary woman). We owned the BH Painting Co. and were hired to paint the home and first, the guest/servants quarters as a trial. A rush job to ready the GREEN walls for Thanksgiving, candy apple red living room and the master en suite was gorgeous. II remember 1 bathroom had the wrought iron grate in the wall where we could hear every conversation. Gorgeous views. Rod Stewart was married to Alana at the time, so would come to pick up George & Alana's son, Ashley. A friend of mine was the interior decorator I found out years later. No one was paid & we took a lien out on the house. Imelda Marcos lent him money & for some reason, either bought the house or lived in it. I found the intense details and paint colors, etc., typed up last week. It was titled "The Chaplin House". Now if only I could find where I put them! When I come across them again, I'll see the address. Not Cove. Definitely Summit.
I remember PIA on CARSON SHOW telling the PICKFAIR STORY! What a shame..but @ least the fence & gate are still in place! Your walking vlogs are FABULOUS....Hugs for JAH 🐕💕
I believe the original house/building was demolished, and a new house was constructed in its place. It also looks like the original 18 acres has been subdivided into smaller lots.
My good friend dated Jim Buss's (Jerry Buss's son) best friend around 1986, and I went to pick her up when the Los Angeles Buss family owned the original Pickfair. I did go in the house but remember little of it because we were all going out together that night to a party at another place, kind of blurry memory. Thanks for the video.
your enthusiasm for Hollywood history is greatly appreciated. I am very surprised you did not know of it's more recent history. The story of Pia Zadora purchasing that property is legendary. I hear a lot of mis information on some of your vlogs; especially a walk through at Paramount.
Hey, you guys! I found a tour (of some of the first floor anyway) before it was torn down in 1976 as part of the 48th Academy Awards... search "48th Academy Awards" on youtube, then the 1976 Oscars (the one that has 26 videos in it), and go to Number 22!!! Ok, it's not long, but it is something!! And what a sweetie Ms Pickford is... And her husband Roger is even in the audience!!
Cool Video, I knew I did not think I was wrong about this, I read back in the late 80's or early 90's that the original Pickford house and property were purchased by a Billionaire, and torn down to build this spectacular home, I remember back in 1986 watching and taping the episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" that this home was featured in all its Restored glory., Too bad the new owners decided to tear down this beautiful home to build a Mod home.
Despite reports of the mansion being demolished the truth tells a different story. It was renovated and a large portion was demolished. However the original gates, the pool & pool house, most of the living room, and the entire west wing remains intact.
Love your enthusiasm and love for the history of old Hollywood. Love your videos. Will be in Hollywood in February and looking forward to seeing the sights.
Pickfair had many remodels over the years when Mary Pickford was still living there. You can see it in the old pictures. I don't think all of Pickfair was torn down . I think it was all the the part left of the central turret. I think the turret and a lot of the right is still standing but I may be wrong.
In the 1976 Oscar she got for lifetime achievement (I think), they give a tour of the house then at the end give her the award while she’s on her couch. It’s on TH-cam.
Dear Jordan and Jah, the Pickfair of today is bigger and more majestic than our royal castle in Oslo, Norway! Actually, both Fairbanks and Pickford visited Oslo [then known as Kristiania] back in the day, and there's a clip of it - it looks like a newsreel, but it's actually a promo film for Scandinavian chocolate (Marabou = Sweden, Freia = Norway)!! The first six minutes are from stockholm and surroundings, the rest is from Oslo. And, since TH-cam now and then has some issues to direct links (even to 'their' own stuff), just search Mary and Doug visit Scandinavia, 1924. Also, whether I'm having a good or a bad day, your vlogs, old or new, are pure vitamins to my life, I enjoy them very, very much. I hope you'll never tire of this, Jordan. Best, Ole
I get mesmerized in a sense whn i watch ur vlogs in away of thinking that there was another time of life happening here like the party u showed. Its like how can that be? (But we know). Its amazing. Bet Charlie neva did that again (house).
That Georgian mansion looks nothing like Pickfair. I would have rebuilt the original house using the original blueprints, if I had the money and was able to acquire the property.
Jordan, I enjoy all your Vlogs. After watching this I googled PicFair and read about its history. You're probably too young to remember Pia Zadora ( she was not a good actress rather married a very wealthy man who was much older than she in her early 20's ) I enjoy all the history you include in your vlogs.
Have you any Frank Lloyd Wright properties near you? By far I am fascinated with every design he ever created. I’ve toured several in person and Taliesin West in AZ (though I live only a couple hours from Taliesin North in Spring Green WI.) I know that FLW lived a few years on the West coast to make his mark out there.
Such a shame Zadora tore Pickford down because of supposed Ghosts if she didn't like the Ghost's she should have sold and moved. Such a disgrace. It should have been made a National Landmark and left as was. Such a travesty. Great Hollywood history destroyed by a C rated Hollywood nobody that happened to get lucky and marry a millionaire. It pisses me off!ll
6 yrs late to the conversation, & 5 days since your post, Zadora originally said termite damage required that Pickfair be demolished. But, as you mention, she later said termites could have been dealt with, but not paranormal activity. Even when Mary lived there, she also said unexplainable things occurred in the mansion. Actress Elke Sommers (of the 1960s) & her husband over 50 yrs ago documented paranormal phenomenon in their Beverly Hills home. Over 10 years ago, I wondered if that was an elaborate PR stunt. But I now realize the paranormal is a real thing. I believe their former home, a 1960s-ranch style, has since been torn down too. Sommers said after they sold it in the 1960s, a succession of buyers kept turning around & putting it back on the market. If Jordan ever checks this thread, dating back to around 2017 (& given that Halloween is up ahead), he should know that reality is sometimes way stranger than fiction.
Interesting Charlie Chaplin wanted to build his own house and hired people from the studio to do it. Just goes to show just because Hollywood hires you, you can still can create a piece of shit
It’s so fucked up pal artifacts history things that make you think are just being completely wiped out it’s all about money money money new new new nobody appreciates the old I appreciate you making these videos because eventually these houses in the stories are going to fade into a Bolivian sadly

I worked with the landscaping company that repaired the lawns in 2000(?) and it was one of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen.
Those huge, old mansions are beautiful. It's beyond me, I definitely don't understand why someone would want to change a historical building. It may not havea placque upon it, but it's still historical! Charlie's house was beautiful às well! Thank you, again Jordan, great vlog!!! 🌼
I felt the same and then heard that many went up rather quickly and it was not the best construction in all cases.......but I agree.
I really dislike Pia Zadora for destroying this amazingly beautiful house. I would have been happy to have Fairbanks and Pickford as ghosts if I could have owned this house.
She is an idiot.
right on.
@@ilanarhian yes.
It's such a shame that Pia, had that beautiful Mansion torn down! I think that it was Pia; herself, who was haunted!
yes, I read that too .
What a shame, Pia demolished the house 😢
Sammy Davis Jr lived right across the street from Pickfair, at 1151 Summit
Yup. Believe his guard kills himself on the property?

Never knew about the “Breakaway “ home with 3 different addresses to the same house!
The Pickfield house. Wow. What a show stopper !
There it is! Pia Zadora's masterpiece!! (sarcastically)

Pia Zadora took the original mansion in 1986, 10 years after she received her honorary Oscar in '76.
Excellent. I've always had a deep love for old Hollywood. Pieces like this really stir me up..and get me in an OLD HOLLYWOOD mood.
Thank you.

How could the City of Los Angeles allow Pickfair to be torn down. What were they thinking.Sad.
Let's just hope Pia Zadora never buys the White House, Monticello or Mount Vernon.
Lol!

Thanks Looks a lot like Dynasty house .
It’s great to see where one of my past items I had in my collection it was Mary Pickfords hollywood star plaque she hung in puckfaur
Believe it was a hunting lodge before it became Pickfair.
makes you wonder who actually owns all these mansions now
I get mesmerized in a sense whn i watch ur vlogs in away of thinking that there was another time of life happening here like the party u showed. Its like how can that be? (But we know). Its amazing. Bet Charlie neva did that again (house).
you visited every place I wish to go someday 😄😄
I love see celebrity homes! ⭐🙂
That Georgian mansion looks nothing like Pickfair. I would have rebuilt the original house using the original blueprints, if I had the money and was able to acquire the property.
I think Jerry Buss (owner of the LA Lakers) lived there in the 80's
I just love your videos and especially how you open your videos about Jaws!
I love that dog.
Here in province of Québec, Yvon Deschamps, well-known comédian, bought the former Rolls-Royce of Chaplin
Have good day Jordan....u got a nice voice
No offense but
Your voice has put me to sleep. I'm super interested, but I couldn't keep my eyes open.

Jah is so cute
I think one of those houses was Charles Buddy Rodgers home.
Pia Zadora owned pickfair later on
Pia reportedly tore the old pickfair down cuz of ghostly activity.
I enjoyed your it and the comments.
Paradisiaque
I love you Charles Spencer Chaplin
Love❤️!
Love this.
Then Pia Zadora and her husband tore it down and built that mega home ugh
I read in your comments that Pia Zadora lives at Pickfair now. Does she live there all by herself? She must have tons of staff to maintain the place
Pia is long gone and lives in Las Vegas
home Charles Chaplin abandoned by sui European
Beautiful
