As others have mentioned, this first trailer was like a big nod to all the OG Dune fans out there. Mainly to readers of the book long before the Dune movie of the '80's. Even the use of Pink Floyd's song Eclipse in the trailer is a throwback in a way, to the 1970's Dune film adaptation that never got made where that director, Jodorowsky, was planning on having Pink Floyd do some of the musical score. The box of pain scene is very early on in the book. There's so much more to this story than what this trailer shows. Layers and layers. There'd be no Star Wars, no Game of Thrones, and other SFF stories without the original Dune novel. Hopefully the studio will find an interesting way to release trailers or videos of some of the underlying lore for those unfamiliar with the story. Dune is to Science Fiction, in some ways, what Lord of the Rings is to Fantasy. Loved your reaction!

This trailer didn't show ANYTHING. This series of books is like Space Game of Thrones. Also so many SciFi movies later were inspired by Dune. Jabba the Hut was based off of Baron Harkonnen, George Lucas admitted Dune inspired Star Wars a New Hop. He even based the Force off of the magical powers in Dune like the Jesuits VOICE which is used to influence and control people. Ridley Scott was inspired by Dune to make Blade Runner a film, Mad MAx was inspired by the Character from Dune Paul Atreides, Stargate (not for the desert scifi) but just the visuals from the book, designs for the Original Dune Movie (that was never made) ended up being used the the movie Alien since HR Giger was a designer for both. Even Studio Ghibli tried their hand at making an Anime loosly based on Dunes ideas with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Without the Dune Books, we wouldn't have some of the biggest scifi tropes, ideas and things without it. There is a lot more, but this is a TH-cam comment.

This is one of the best made stories in science fiction, ever. It is an over 50 years old book that spawned a series written by both Herbert and his son... the events of the series spans tens of thousands of years, with history, legends and a constantly changing society and world. This first movie is going to be about the first 2/3 of the book. There is SO much more than the trailer showed!

The trailer itself doesn't spoil anything. It's based on a 1965 book, which was later adapted into the unsuccessful 1984 film adaptation. It was later adapted as a video game. It was then adapted as SyFy miniseries in 2000, followed by the "Children of Dune" sequel in 2003. Both miniseries were a hit. If you want to know more about it, I highly recommend you Google for the Medium article: "2021s Dune - The Story and Everything You Need To Know". It should satisfy all your questions!

Dune is a novel by Frank Herbert released in 1965. There's actually a bunch of books in the series. Since you guys have never heard of Dune, wait to watch this movie, then after, watch the 1984 movie version by David Lynch, then watch the mini-series from 2000, & then maybe read the 1st novel, which is 400+ pages. Some people don't like the Lynch version, but I liked it. If you have read the 1st novel like I have, then I understand the challenges to make the 1984 version. Compressing 400 pages into one movie was one of those challenges. Back then, no one really thought of splitting up the story into a movie trilogy, or maybe in two movies, like this new one is going to, I think. It was already risky & daunting to do just one movie in the mid 1980's. I hope the new movie will be good. There's already a lot of familiar famous faces in it, which means they probably already knew what they were getting into when they signed on. And I suppose it really is time for another cinematic reproduction of the story. Some bit of trivia... Frank Herbert thought up the story looking at the dunes on the coast of Oregon in the late 1950's. And as some people have already commented, no, I don't think the trailer is giving away too much. There are also some fan-made documentaries on TH-cam that give you the fictional timeline of the Dune story, but again, don't look at that if you don't want to be spoiled.

It's a book from the 60s that was unsuccessfully made into a really weird movie in the 80s. It's a massive story and nothing in this trailer spoils anything. The book (actually a whole series,) is so dense that I'm hoping they split the initial story into two parts, instead of trying to cram it all into one movie like they did with the weirdo David Lynch version.

Dune is the book that the original idea of Star Wars came from. It is the epic that many movies got their inspiration from. It was made in the 1980's, 1990's, mini series in 2000's, and 4 or 5 others tired to make it but got scuttled. It is THE Holy Grail the directors want to be the one to make it right. ... Its an adaptation from a old popular book from 1965. There was a movie of it in 1984 based on it, but that wasn't well-received. There were video games of it that came out in 1992-2001 and a TV show that came out in 2000. Because of DUNE, it is one of the reasons why Star Wars and other sci-fi films/tv shows exist, so DUNE is basically the Lord of the Rings of sci-fi.

DUNE is an epic Science Fiction book written by Frank Herbert that was originally published in 1965. Star Wars took queues from this book. It was first made into a film in 1984 by David Lynch. It was widely criticized by fans of the book by straying from the source material and even Lynch, himself, has disowned the film. However, the costume design in this new version takes queues from the '84 Lynch film, but improves and modernizes them. The SyFy channel did a 4.5 hour mini-series for Dune back in 2000. It was more faithful to the source material, but suffered from a TV budget with visual effects only rendered in late 90s, SD CGI. Also some of the sets, especially those out in the Dunes of Arrakis clearly appeared to be shot on a soundstage with less than stellar green screen work. But overall, this new version looks to be the definitive filmed version of the Book.
Oh, speaking of the Book(s), the original book is THICK. MANY pages. 1000+ I think. Maybe 2000. But it is immersive and deep and always had the moniker of being unfilmable, much like how Lord of the Rings was until Peter Jackson got a hold of the IP. I also said, book(s), right? Well, Frank wrote another couple of Dune books, but died in 1986. However his son took over and write many more. If this film proves to be successful, we can probably count on many more films in this universe to be made covering more of the books. SyFy actually made a sequel mini-series called Children of Dune, which was quite different in tone. By then Paul Atreides was the Big Kahuna and was on a bit of a power trip, if you know what I'm saying.

Plus also drug addiction. Also...people can predict the future and how it drives them crazy to know the future. The "monster" is the giant sandworm on the planet dune (Arrakus). The planet of the drug called spice (guarded by the giant worms).

info for Cyber Nerds: Dune was a book series originally, really quite thick and in depth, i could imagine Star Wars books being the same but i haven't read many of those. Anyway Dune was indeed turned into a movie (or it may have been TV series can't remember) way back when. This is the remake and their boasting "the next big thing" now that Star Wars is over and well it hopefully should be. essentially Dune existed before Star Wars (i think anyway) and even if it didn't it has always competed with it. but it is far more complex IMO. It has also been a video game for PC.

Don’t worry, there weren’t any real spoilers in this trailer, but lots of teases 😆 Dune was a classic sci fi epic novel published in 1965 by Frank Herbert which inspired Star Wars, Wheel of Time, etc. It was adapted in 1984 into a film that wasn’t very good, and as a low budget miniseries in 2000. It also has some video games made in the early 2000s. This new film is an adaptation of the original novel, and covers the first half of the book since it is such a long novel. Denis the director, said he wouldn’t agree to direct unless he could do it in two parts.

As a mega Dune fan, I always recommend reading the books but if you prefer movies: Dune (1984) by David Lynch is more style over accuracy in terms of book adaptations. If you want more accuracy and more understanding of all the political stuff in the story, watch the two miniseries that the sci fi channel put out called Dune (2000) and Children of Dune (2003). They're longer b/c they cover the first 3 books in the series. Also young James McAvoy is in the Children of Dune miniseries. I think you guys would like how much crud people get up to in the series b/c everyone is always double-crossing or outplaying each other in them.

The best thing that I can say for you guys to do is one of the following:
    1. Get the audiobook of Dune and listen to it or
    2. Watch the 1984 movie (It has Patrick Stewart, Kyle MacLachlan, Sting, Sean Young, and many others, so another star studded cast) either the regular or director's cut...scratch that watch the Director's cut.
This movie and the story was way ahead of it's time.
There was another production of this movie that was supposed to have been done by Alejandro Jodorowsky, who had H. R. Giger doing the sets and character design(he was the guy who made the Alien from the movie Aliens) and he was also supposed to have had Pink Floyd do some of the music (The name of the song from this trailer is from PF and it's called "Eclipse") There was a documentary called Jodorowsky's Dune that tells alot about that, it's also a good watch as well.
But seriously before you even go and see this movie, watch the 1984 version of it and you'll get the jest of what this movie is all about.
