It's like saying that the BBC mini-series based on the novel "War and Peace" is a remake of Bondarchuk's film, just because last one was the first adaptation of the book. In this case, the new film does not rethink the old one, but rethinks the original source, namely the book. And all the similarities between different adaptations are due precisely to the book. Moreover, movies based on classic novels are continually re-shot, but no one calls them remakes.
I cannot recommend enough to anyone who has not read the books to read (or listen to audio books) before you see the movie. There is so much to understand about this universe and they are such great books. This trailer looks so awesome, so hyped for it.
For any of you (I'm looking at you Jay) who can't get into the physical book, I HIGHLY recommend doing the audiobook on a roadtrip. This book is very intense with the names, lore, etc - it's GoT on steroids. It's alot but so worth it. An audiobook may be more digestible for alot of people.
Dune is book 1 of a sprawling sci-fi saga from novelist Frank Herbert, which came out in 1965. It's set like 10,000 years in the future. Humans have spread across many planets, and are ruled by the Emperor, with the balance of his power tempered by the following entities: --The Spacing Guild: the Guild controls interstellar travel,--Guild navigators are humans mutated by the "spice" Melange, which is only found on Dune, the common name for the planet Arrakis--the spice allows them to fold space to achieve travel across vast distances. --CHOAM: which basically controls the economy across the known universe. --The Landsraad: a council of minor and greater noble houses (think House Frey, House Lannister, House Stark, etc.) --The Bene Gesserit: an all-female order with special abilities such as clairvoyance and mind control whose objectives include maintaining stability within the Imperium through arranged marriages between houses; subtle indoctrination of outer worlds to prepare their populations' acceptance through cultural and religious practices, prophecies and cues when the Imperium inevitably comes calling on those worlds; and, more low-key, the manipulation of bloodlines and genetics to produce the Kwisatz Haderach, basically a super being who can venture into a psychic "blind spot" that run of the mill Bene Gesserit can not seem to go. Paul (Timothee's) mother, Lady Jessica, is a member of that order, as is the one in the beginning of the trailer with the box of pain. Dune--aka Arrakis--is a planet most recently ruled by the House Harkonnen (Dave Bautista is a lifelong member), but the Emperor has decreed that House Atreides (Duke Leto/Oscar Isaac--Paul's father) take over governance. So Paul's fam moves from Caladan to Arrakis, along with Gurney Hallek (Josh Brolin), Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa), and Thufir Hawat (Stephen McKinley Henderson), a Mentat, which is a human super-computer with the ability to compile, coalesce and exploit huge amounts of data to counsel their employers. They all serve their House with distinction, obey their Duke and teach Paul various skillsets within their disciplines. So basically, Paul becomes a polymath thanks to all of his expert instructors and advisors. Not much more I can say on this as it would be spoilery, so I will just say that the indigenous people of Dune--the Fremen--are nomadic and know the value of the secrets of the desert and its resources, as does Liet Kynes, the planetary ecologist appointed by the Emperor to oversee the changing of the guard from Harkonnen to Atreides rulership of Dune. Kynes, in their unique position, moves within the camps of power from the Imperial court, to the Harkonnens, the Atreides, and the Fremen. Believe it or not there is a lot more info to be detailed, but these are the broad strokes and this is the longest fucking YT comment I've ever made, so I hope it clears some things up for you and others. This is a DENSE book, a very real sci-fi world, and as such my understanding is that this will actually be two movies to cover the first book, albeit we don't know that the studio has given the green light to the second half. And oh yeah, Dune is populate by huge Sandworms. They contribute the the creation of the spice Melange, but I won't go into details. I don't think of myself as a details kind of guy.
I won’t spoil any of the critical details that will be addressed in the movie, but you should understand the universe this story takes place in. The first book, published in 1965, the 1984 film and the SyFy miniseries go into some Universe and historic details, but the subsequent books do a better job in expanding it. DUNE takes place around 20,000 years into our future. Humanity has spread to many worlds and evolved in many different ways. The entire saga covers 34,000 years in 6 main books. The most critical point to know is that all planets are dependent on a single source of energy for interstellar travel, called the Spice. Spice is produced by those gigantic worms seen on the trailer and those worms supposedly only live in one planet, Arrakis. Arrakis (aka Dune) is that desert planet on the trailer. The sand dunes of Arrakis are supposed to be miles deep of loose sand where the worms can move freely without coming to the surface. Vibrations attract them and they come and swallow whatever is making the vibrations. Arrakis/Dune is so dry that the "native" people of the planet, called the Fremen, have to wear the black weird suits you see on the trailer. Nobody can survive the desert without those suits. Whoever controls the Spice, controls all planets. Spice has several positive and negative side-effects. The most negative side-effect is that it is highly addictive. The positive effects are many; it increases the human lifespan to about 200 years, it increases the senses and intelligence of the consumers greatly, it provides many people with spectacular capabilities ( think of the Force in Star Wars) and it can even help some people evolve to super-humans where these people develop the ability to fold space and transport ships from one planet to the other. As with Game of Thrones, the DUNE universe is controlled by an Emperor and several Great Houses/Families. The Emperor and the Houses control the production and flow of Spice and the houses are always competing for a bigger share of the pie. There are two organizations that are outside the direct control of the Emperor and the Houses; they are called the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and the Guild. The Bene Gesserit sisterhood are basically witches that have manipulated humanity through a breeding, genetic and mystic program; the creepy lady with the box is the Reverend mother of the Bene Gesserit. They are manipulative witches and have their own agenda The Guild is a very weird organization. They hate the Bene Gesserit, but are needed by all Houses, the Emperor and even by the Bene Gesserit. They are the Interstellar pilots of all the ships in the Empire. In the book they are humans that have evolved to a level where you cannot recognize them as human anymore. They are also very powerful and are the ones that can bend space and bring ships from one planet to the next almost instantly. I'm not sure how they will be presented in the movie, though. Also, martial arts have evolved so much that they resemble magic; called the Weirding Way. You see a lot of sword fighting on the trailer as those shimmering shields you see in the trailer, have made bullets and energy weapons obsolete; so humanity has returned to hand to hand combat. The only thing that penetrates those shields are slow moving weapons, like swords and knives. Another reason why you do not see a lot of the typical AI and Technology in Dune is that thousands of years before this story, there was a huge war between humans and AI/Robots. Humans won that war and banned a lot of the types of the technology we are used to seeing in sci-fi movies and shows. Some technology remains, like the shields, the anti-gravity ships, etc, but it is a small amount compared to what we are usually used to seeing in Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. Dune is so old that it has influenced almost all the scifi we know and love. This includes, Star Wars, Stargate, Interstellar, modern Star Trek, and many others. For example, the owners of Dune almost sued and forced George Lucas to re-write many parts of Star Wars as he copied Dune without their permission. I hope this helps. Here is a TH-cam channel of Quinn where he summarizes Dune’s universe into a 5-minute video. th-cam.com/video/UMU8FCPYeRw/w-d-xo.html
It aged poorly, much like the David lynch version but at the time it did really well for viewership on sci-fi channel. Also it was waaaay more faithful to the material then the first movie. I liked that series quite a bit as a teenager.
@@barbara832001 I own the DVD set. Bought it when I was in college. My problem is two-fold. First they're in storage somewhere, and we don't have a DVD player anymore.
Honestly, I was the same with the books until I tried the audio books. Almost done with bk1 and it’s been amazing. Watching the interview with Villeneuve about directing this really gave me hope and the trailer delivered. I get chills every time I see it.
"Dune" will change everything you have ever known about scifi. it is the Father and Mother of all scifi that came after it. The reasoning is because Frank Herbert attempted to predict, actually PREDICT, the future of tech.
Spice is known as "Melange". In the novel no two people have the same experience of it. Hence why its called "Melange": a variety of things. The insinuation is that in consuming it, you gain all of individual lifetimes and knowledge.the catch: it also insinuates that once addicted if you stop, you die. its a one way street.
Denis Villeneuve's version will be the 3rd adaptation; the books, which are considered the greatest science fiction of all time, have influenced subsequent works, like Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Blade Runner, Hayao Miyazaki's anime film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and even Futurama. It's also inspired songs by Pink Floyd (covered by Hans Zimmer for this trailer and was supposed to be included in the never-materialized Dune from the 70s), Iron Maiden and Tool. Even HR Giger was impacted by the Harkonnen technology.
It’s so cool to see people without a connection to Dune watching the trailer. I’m a big Dune nerd - I wore out two VHS copies of the 1984 movie because I used to watch it pretty much every Sunday. Sometimes I’d switch it out for Alien, but mostly Sunday = Dune until I met my husband and had better things do at the weekend. So when I first saw the trailer, I was pretty much incoherent for 20 minutes afterwards ;)
some background on Dune: the first novel took Frank Herbert 20 years to write. you wont find another book that took as long without looking hard. Ecology, Human Evolution, Economics, Power, War, Espionage, all are elements covered in this movie.
Denis Villeneuve is a massive Frank Herbert fan and insisted on making two films so that he could "...explore the complexity and scope of Herbert's opus." According to many involved in the production, it's said that this will be the most faithful adaptation of the Book. Cannot Wait To See This!!!
I would recommend reading the summary of the story at the top of the Wikipedia page for the 1984 movie and then if you want, reading the cast list for this one. That way, you know who is who and who is what. It definitely helped me because I read all of that before I watched the trailer and I'm glad I did.
The spice, melange, smells like cinnamon, glows blue. It is addictive, life-extending, nootropic, mutagenic, and if you stop consuming it, you die. Wild shite, that is.
It's definitely a love letter to all the Dune fans, Denis being one of the biggest fans out there. Which I couldn't be more happy about, but we really need the mainstream onboard, because this first movie is only the first half of the story. Denis is doing this story in 2 parts, 2 movies.. Because thats what it really needs to properly tell the story. So I really hope the marketing team does their fucking job and makes it appealing to everyone! That being said, coming from someone who's waited decades for a proper adapt, I loved this trailer!! It looks like what I've always dreamt of!
In the book Jessica says spice tastes like cinnamon, and the sandworm’s breath that Paul and Jessica encounter’s breath smells like cinnamon too. Guy on the right is spot on!
The original Dune was good, you just have to take into account the time frame it was made (especially with the special effects). But Sting and Patrick Stewart were great in it.
I have watched the 1984 version when I was a kid, my father read the book and liked the movie too so he made me watch it but I don't remember super much. Without having much knowledge about the book and even the movie I must say that this trailer is intriguing and attractive. Those who have never watched the previous two movies and never read the book are gonna like this movie, I'm sure, cause the trailer is very promising.
The Director Villeneuve said he would only do this Story if he could tell the DUNE book in TWO movies. They are already writing the script to PART 2 but Warner Bros has not green lit the 2nd movie yet.
Honestly as a big fan I've been looking for the reactions of folks who know nothing about it, haven't yet got to your reaction just where you said what you where bringing was pretty much knowing nothing and wanted to say, yeah actually that is exactly what I have been looking for
So, being a child of the 80s who HATED everything about the original Dune movie, tried years later to read the book and just never made my way deep enough into it to have been grabbed by it (and I'm a HUGE reader, y'all) and who can't remember the SciFi channel miniseries (though I did see and very much liked their Children of Dune mini), here's what I want from this movie. I want a creative team who says, "Hey, we know why you didn't get this before, and we're going to make this s**t really cool AF and help you understand it and learn why so many people love it so much. And we think you will love it too by the time we get done." Here's what else I am hoping for: I hope this is a HUGE fake out and they are not going to try to fit the whole story into a single movie. I hope this is Dune Part 1, and they just are not saying so yet. Because one of the things I disliked about the original was that there was SO MUCH info you are trying to take in, yet it felt like there was a huge amount of info left out. The movie was 2 hours and 17 min BACK THEN, and yet it felt incredibly condensed and rushed, never taking a moment to breathe and let you understand wtf was happening. It seemed to be entirely dependent on viewers having read the books and gotten all that background info before watching it, and I have always contended that if you have to read a separate novel to understand what is going on in a movie, then the movie is NOT doing its job. (I'm looking at you, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.) So I really, really, really HOPE that Dune takes the time to bring in new fans and show them why so many people have been fans for so long.
Wow, when he said cinnamon, that was the exact spice I thought of. Partly, they talk about the smell of spice, and cinnamon is just one of those smells that I can remember even if nowhere near it, so I think of it when I think of spice from Dune.
It certainly isn’t a remake but there are scenes in this trailer that I remember exactly from the original film. I read the book after the movie so maybe I didn’t notice how closely they matched up at the time.
I dont know if yall ever read game of thrones, but this dune book series is way easier, shorter and not boring for like 50 chapters at a time like game of thrones lol. Audible has a fantastic narrator for this dune series too. Just listen while you drive or cook or before you go to sleep. You can set a 15, 30 or however many mins sleep timer you want through the app. Story time for bed time lol.
its very ironic that you guys said cinnamon for spice because that s what its described as tasting like, but its used to help create worm holes for space travel FYI.
The thing about Dune, is the world was based on H.R. Giger's bio-mechanical artwork. That's the only thing that bugs me a little is that this one will not be. Other than that, and the fact that the eyes of the people on Arakus don't have blue eyes, from Spice saturation, it looks fantastic. The Beast Harkonan played by Batista is awesome too
The trailer looks beautiful. I'm mainly excited about seeing a new Villeneuve movie, that it is Dune is a bonus. I obviously want a part two but I worry the movie won't make enough to get made. I adored Bladerunner 2049 but audiences didn't turn out to see it.
Just want to point out that the director will be making the dune movie into a two-partner. That is a great idea considering there is sooooo much going on in that book. The ‘84 movie tried to do the whole book in a 3 1/2 hour movie which doesn’t work.
Agreed, 1984 Dune needed drugs to fully work properly lol. This one will be much closer to the book. I was lucky enough to get the book given to me in my teens where I had plenty of time and the desire to avoid home/house work. My first taste of sci fi, can't wait for this.
It'll be the gem of the 20s when I get old. I do have to say it's not a remake but an adaptation. It was said to be released in December but it'll probably be delayed until January of next year. There'll be two movies and this will be half of the first book. What it is is Game of Thrones in space, that said Star Wars and ASOIF had heavy inspiration from Frank Herbert's books. Ɔ U ∩ C is to Science Fiction what LOTR was to fantasy. Actually here is the guy who made the music for the trailer used for the TENET interval. th-cam.com/video/Y2iGVz2CwMA/w-d-xo.html
FUNNY ENOUGH, the spice melange (IIRC) does smell of cinnamon! :) Also, I grew up with the 00's (high school/college at least) scifi miniseries and its sequel. It's excellent and a bit more accessible/true to the book (in spirit if not exact dialogue) to the books. And...because I'm a nerd: the needle is called a gom jabbar and is an instant-kill poison. In other iterations its a finger cap/poison claw thing, but I like the needle idea.
Why am I suddenly in the mood for cinnamon donuts!!! Totally expect a Sting cameo in this movie, which looks pretty damn awesome. The cast is as stellar, if not more so, than Dune ‘84.
This is a take on Dune by Frank Hubert. It's not a remake of a movie. Small correction but an important detail because Dune the book LITERALLY shaped Denis Villeneuve
It tics me off when people call 1980s Dune "the original" and this "the remake". Especially that it's not even due to misinformation, as all I've heard say it that way were perfectly aware of how things are - that there was a book and it was brought to screen twice. So why?
"We're just gonna make Dune right. And if people don't get it, that's on them."
I wish more directors and creative teams would adopt this mentality.

@@awesward4454 So did Game of Thrones at least with the series adaption which took several storylines from Dune.
My mom introduced me to Dune(both the movie and books) when I was pretty young. I've made it a point to reread the book every year since I was 12. This trailer got me pretty excited and hoping they'll show this in 4D. lol
"Dune never reached us in our pop culture infancy": thats because the slow blade penetrates the shield.
Sting's character and the riding of the sandworm will NOT be in this "Dune" because they're splitting the first book into two movies. Both elements are in the second half.
I usually leave the rating to Jay, but, for me, this trailer gets 1 out of 1 "Oscar Issac is a sexy Daddy"
Lmao
Technically it's not a remake
This drives me nuts... it's NOT a remake. It's based on the book, not the film. It's a common mistake.
@@Timmayytoo Why would it drive you nuts? The original movie is based off the books, whether it followed the exact story of the book is not the point. The 1984 movie was based off the books. It is a remake in that there was a movie called "Dune" and this movie is also called "Dune", arriving from the same story. Many off the scenes in this trailer can be played side by side to the original movie in which you can see they have much in common. It is a remake. In case you're having trouble understanding what a remake is here you go...
Remake: make (something) again or differently.
Between you and KD6 with his "Technically". Just stop... sheesh.
I hate when people call it a "remake"
There was a Dune movie. Now they are making another one. So it is a remake.
@@daviddarko5837 this is a new adaptation of the book, not a remake.
Glad you boys chimed in, I was getting worried! :) I'm really excited about this!

1984 movie version of Dune needs no chemical assistance to be a trip. In a good way.
It's a campy overdone monstrosity.
there was also a Dune movie somewhere around 2000 which was worst than the 1984 version. while this one is a MASTERPIECE.
Villeneuve made storyboards for dune as a kid. He's had this in his mind for a while.
Dune is book 1 of a sprawling sci-fi saga from novelist Frank Herbert, which came out in 1965. It's set like 10,000 years in the future. Humans have spread across many planets, and are ruled by the Emperor, with the balance of his power tempered by the following entities:
--The Spacing Guild: the Guild controls interstellar travel,--Guild navigators are humans mutated by the "spice" Melange, which is only found on Dune, the common name for the planet Arrakis--the spice allows them to fold space to achieve travel across vast distances.
--CHOAM: which basically controls the economy across the known universe.
--The Landsraad: a council of minor and greater noble houses (think House Frey, House Lannister, House Stark, etc.)
--The Bene Gesserit: an all-female order with special abilities such as clairvoyance and mind control whose objectives include maintaining stability within the Imperium through arranged marriages between houses; subtle indoctrination of outer worlds to prepare their populations' acceptance through cultural and religious practices, prophecies and cues when the Imperium inevitably comes calling on those worlds; and, more low-key, the manipulation of bloodlines and genetics to produce the Kwisatz Haderach, basically a super being who can venture into a psychic "blind spot" that run of the mill Bene Gesserit can not seem to go.
What a great cast they have for this. Personally, I always thought of ginger when they mention the spice melange.
Please watch the 1984 movie just so you can see how amazing this absolutely looks
They are manipulative witches and have their own agenda
The Guild is a very weird organization.

Hey I just wanna say, your videos are great and filled of charisma and laughter. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Sir. We appreciate it 😁
Well, I wouldn't say NOBODY watched the SciFi Channel Mini Series. I thought it was great.
Agreed it was the main reason I picked up the books.
Been trying to find it streaming to watch it again.
It aged poorly, much like the David lynch version but at the time it did really well for viewership on sci-fi channel. Also it was waaaay more faithful to the material then the first movie. I liked that series quite a bit as a teenager.
@@hunnerdayEDT It's not on any streaming service, you have to get a hard copy to watch it.
@@barbara832001 I own the DVD set. Bought it when I was in college. My problem is two-fold. First they're in storage somewhere, and we don't have a DVD player anymore.
"I don't know how else to watch dune'
Lights up: Couldn't agree more.
Honestly, I was the same with the books until I tried the audio books. Almost done with bk1 and it’s been amazing. Watching the interview with Villeneuve about directing this really gave me hope and the trailer delivered. I get chills every time I see it.
To a francophone, the fac tthey call is "spice melange" forces you to imagine it's Masala mix
"Dune" will change everything you have ever known about scifi. it is the Father and Mother of all scifi that came after it. The reasoning is because Frank Herbert attempted to predict, actually PREDICT, the future of tech.
The Spice tastes like cinnamon, btw, according to the books.
Its funny but the book describes the spice as smelling like cinnamon
As far as the story goes - it's Game of Thrones in space. It's one of the sources of Star Wars - it's why Totooine is a desert planet.
The Spice must flow! In the name of Mud'dib!
Your reactions were hilarious, loved it!
It's also inspired songs by Pink Floyd (covered by
Hans Zimmer for this trailer and was supposed to be included in the never-materialized Dune from the 70s), Iron Maiden and Tool.
I read alllll the Dune series and this. Looks. AWESOME!
some background on Dune: the first novel took Frank Herbert 20 years to write. you wont find another book that took as long without looking hard.
Lol acting like you don't know Dune and then saying, "well maybe there is just different flavors of worms out there." Hilarious.
Wait. Was I right?
The spice, melange, smells like cinnamon, glows blue. It is addictive, life-extending, nootropic, mutagenic, and if you stop consuming it, you die. Wild shite, that is.
agresticumbra and....it must flow.
What!!!????? You don't remember Sir Patrick Stewart???? GASP!
Damn you, Jay. LMAO XD I'm all like @___@ at the epic of that ending, and then .... 'helloooo' and I fell out laughing.
Adam is somehow amazingly close to what the plot is, yet simultaneously way off the mark. Lol
Lmao I associated the smell of spice with cinnamon also.
The Director Villeneuve said he would only do this Story if he could tell the DUNE book in TWO movies. They are already writing the script to PART 2 but Warner Bros has not green lit the 2nd movie yet.
What does this trailer get right? I'll just put it this way...I WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE NOW!!!

you are right, Dune is saga that will consume you at the same time as you consume it. I have read the whole saga a couple of times
"What's in the BAAAAAXXXXXX!!???"
"John Doe has the upper hand!"
If you pull that trigger, he wins....
The director of Dune in 1984 passed on ROTJ to direct Dune. Trying to imagine Lynch's ROTJ - it would've been real weird!
And we think you will love it too by the time we get done."
Here's what else I am hoping for: I hope this is a HUGE fake out and they are not going to try to fit the whole story into a single movie. (I'm looking at you, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.)
So I really, really, really HOPE that Dune takes the time to bring in new fans and show them why so many people have been fans for so long.
Wow, when he said cinnamon, that was the exact spice I thought of. Partly, they talk about the smell of spice, and cinnamon is just one of those smells that I can remember even if nowhere near it, so I think of it when I think of spice from Dune.
agree... Dune is def a deep read

It certainly isn’t a remake but there are scenes in this trailer that I remember exactly from the original film. I read the book after the movie so maybe I didn’t notice how closely they matched up at the time.

The 1984 music score for Lynche's Dune, by Toto, cannot be surpassed. They should use some of it in this movie as a nod to it's greatness.

its very ironic that you guys said cinnamon for spice because that s what its described as tasting like, but its used to help create worm holes for space travel FYI.
This is a franchise i would love to see do well. Full story has never been done and the prequels are awsome.
Exact same time answering the spice question: Cinnamon. No clue why, but it's only thing I can think of for it.
The Beast Harkonan played by Batista is awesome too
They do have blue on blue eyes, they just aren't glowing.
The cinematography is gorgeous....this looks really promising. I am a fan of the original movie but this looks like it is made for the fans.
Also, I grew up with the 00's (high school/college at least) scifi miniseries and its sequel. It's excellent and a bit more accessible/true to the book (in spirit if not exact dialogue) to the books.
And...because I'm a nerd: the needle is called a gom jabbar and is an instant-kill poison. In other iterations its a finger cap/poison claw thing, but I like the needle idea.
And when the worm came up did you say: Shai-hulud...I did.

So why?
