  • Producer/recordist Benny Grotto of Mad Oak Studios in Boston, MA takes an in-depth look at the Rode K2 and TF-5 microphones.
In the second installment of this four-part series, Benny examines the TF-5s as drum overheads, and the K2 as a Tchad Blake-inspired "Bone Mic", exploring the changes in tonality while taking the latter through each of its polar patterns.

Because the stereo spatial information is all coming from the overheads, you've had to mix them higher than normal, leading up far more ride in the mix than I'd like. Great tone from the 3 mics though. I might use this sort of technique for jazz, and possibly some blues numbers.
