What an awesome studio 606 is,...damn. I'm a big fan of Lauten mics. I own the LS-208, a Clarion and a pair of LA-120s. I have small studio in VA and they get used quite frequently for a variety of source but more than anything drums. I do want a Snare Mic but will probably wait til I find one used.

Awesome! Please feel free to use the affiliate link in the description :-) I don't always use the D112 as a bottom snare. My buddy "Greazy" Wil came over to engineer on a session and this was the only "good" option at the moment for my 2nd rig. Sounds surprisingly good though!

Oh it's a nice microphone, sure. But you can hear. It's not a, SHURE, thing, either. Especially when it is, soloed. And it's nothing to write home about. It's the overhead microphones capturing most of the sound of the snare drum. Not the Snare Mic. Which sounds, underwhelming actually. And really is not a worthy purchase. Compared to a, SHURE Brothers Inc., SM-57. That provides for a lot more snap to the sound. And really makes the snare drum come alive. Where that one really doesn't. It's just a thud. With no life. No snap. No sizzle. No zing. No zip. I am highly unimpressed. As a SM-57 would be better sounding. As this is only a commercial. A nice cute commercial, sure. For a single brand of microphone. That are, so so to begin with. Trying to imitate other microphones.
And while some of the imitations come close. They still sound like, imitations. But then you also save a few dollars in the process. To make that sonic compromise. Which is not a bad one. But it's also not a great one to make. Because the diaphragms are too thin. To, hype the high-end, unnaturally. And it makes them sound cheap. With thin diaphragms.
Yes most of these microphone manufacturers are using, 3.0 Mil thickness diaphragms. Some even only 1.5 Mil. Which is way too thin sounding. And overly fizzy sounding. Which does not say, Quality. Like a 6.0 Mil thickness diaphragm on a Neumann condenser microphone has. That all beginners think sounds dull. They don't. They sound smooth. The sound quality. They sound expensive. Because they are. And they have expensive output transformers. Cheap ones don't have any. And they sound it. Because the 6.0 Mil diaphragm microphones. Take Equalization, well. Thin ones, don't. They sound overly fizzy. Because they have overly thin, microphone diaphragms. That sound, cheap, entry-level, beginner like. Because they are. And that's not a quality sound. But look like they should provide that. Oh well? That's what the cost of a bargain microphone gets you. When you really should only be using it, SM-57's. And if that's not good enough?
I am an ardent lover end user. Of a substitute microphone. It's called a Sennheiser, MD-421. And those sound, INCREDIBLE! And I love them on all the drums! But I only owned 2 of those myself. Because they cost about 3 times that of the, SM-57's, each. And there is no comparison. Those just below the, SM-57's, away! And you can hear it, here:
    soundcloud.com/remyrad/track08
I specialize in live recordings and live Radio & TV Broadcasts. And the PA guys had put all, Sennheiser MD-421 microphones on the drum set. And this is what I got of this live show. This is not a studio gig. This is in front of approximately 10,000+ people. At Army Base, Fort Meade, Maryland.. For the Capital Jazz Fest, festival concert. And these are the, 60 second, mixes. I pushed up very quickly. And this is why I got paid the big bucks. As other recording studio engineers go nuts. Because everything is technically wrong! And they can't get a good mix that way. Mine sounds pretty good.. And I only take 60 seconds. Of the first song they play. And then I tell the director. I got the mix. And they switch to us. On the MTV Satellite. As I am parked next to a satellite uplink truck. With my recording studio truck. That also has a video control room within it also. It's a big truck. A really big truck. With central air conditioning. And 3 rooms within.. It accommodates up to about 8 engineers. It's a big truck. It's a highway truck. That goes from performance venue to performance venue. Or did for over 30 years. From 1991.
And this is how you do it.. When you have to do it for live Broadcast. Without a microphone test. Or a sound check. You only get the first 60 seconds of the first song. Try that, for yourselves. It's exciting. It's definitely a challenge. And it's a whole lot of fun. When you know what you're doing.
Obviously I know what I'm doing. As I also design and build custom studios. I'm crazy.
    RemyRAD
