    Great video - subscribed! I bought a pair of Omni-1's from Roger last year, and they have been great. When I went to buy a pair of CM4's this year I learned that Roger is no longer selling directly. He is now using resellers to sell his mic and each one has different pricing and lead times on availability and shipping.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s right! It’s probably much easier for him to just ship to distributors once, rather than individual orders. I’ve found (at least in North America) the representative will ship pretty much anywhere. So I wonder if you can just find a good price and order from whichever distributor that is?
      Anyway, great mics! And thanks for the sub!

      @@Average-AL Good question: I thought I knew the answer, but actually discovered that it is never mentioned in the manual or anywhere else. That omission seems to be due to the 32-bit floating point format of the encoding. I have never had a problem, though, and would guess it's at least 70dB for the mic inputs, but I haven't tried it with a low-output dynamic mic such as the SM7B.

    Thank you for the review! Always super informative and fun. I was wondering if these would be good for sound effects recording? E.g. fabric crumpling, burps, squishy pasta, etc. Or would another microphone be better for that purpose (that's within the same price range)? Would be paired with a Zoom F3 recorder.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh yes. These are great for sound FX recording. As long as you have a good quiet and dampened area to do the recording. They’re a wide cardioid pattern, so they’re great for creating sound FX that are moving around, too.
      I can’t think of a cheaper SDC mic that is as good as the CM4 mics. So I definitely recommend!

    God bless. I love your videos.
    Love from Bosnia!!

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sani! If you’re talking about vocals for singing, between the two I would choose the NT1. Not to be confused with the NT1A. The NT1A is a terrible mic, in my opinion.
      The CM4 is fabulous for a lot of things but since it’s a small diaphragm condenser, it’s very susceptible to plosives and even the smallest amount of wind (breath).
      Large diaphragm condensers like the NT1 are always preferred for singing vocals.
      I have a video on my channel that looks at the NT1 and another video that compares the NT1 against the NT1A, as well.
      I hope this helps!

      @@TheRecordist thank you soo much. Apart from your Sound Devices Pre inteface, which one would you recommend if you are aware of something decent without selling my left kidney to be able to afford for a mic , interface and maybe a preamp?
      God bless you keep up your briliant work !!! peace

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suncani hey, I would first need to know what you are intending to record, if I were to recommend a device.
      For example, for music, I would not buy a recorder, but instead an interface. There are many. Audient interfaces are really nice and not too expensive. Higher end would be Apollo interfaces or RME.
      For field recording, it would not be an interface, but a recorder with its own battery power. Low end but decent ones are the Zoom recorders such as the H5 or the F3. The F3 is a higher end one but not terribly expensive-depending on where you are.
      Let me know what you intend to do with your recording and I can better zero in on a recommendation.

    • @suncani
      @suncani ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can not thank you enough.
      I rarely have need to record outdoors so far. I need a set up for indoor controlled enviroment. Maybe some voice over, singing and similar type of work. What mic, interface and possible mic preamp would you recommend, from mid tier heading towards the edge of it. Thank you my brother. I appreciate your time and your hard earned knowledge throughout many years of dedication.
      God bless.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suncani hi Sani!
      Thanks so much!
      Ok, for voice work, there are a few options. First, if you’re in a room that is not acoustically treated (lots of echo and reverb in the room), or if you have a lot of house noises happening around you, then you should go with a dynamic mic. Mics like the ElectroVoice RE20 or Shure SM7B are high end but not crazy expensive. They would both complement your voice and they are both used a lot on many albums and for voice work.
      If you have a treated room (dead sounds, no bounce, and quiet house), then a large diaphragm condenser mic is preferred. Cheap but decent low-priced mics are the Røde NT1 or the Aston Origin. Low-mid priced mics are SE Electronics SE2200 or the SE Electronics T2. Mid priced mics are the Shure KSM32 and the Universal Audio LX.
      Mid-high priced mics are the Neumann TLM-102 and TLM-103 or the Austrian Audio OC818 or the Universal Audio DLX.
      High priced mics are the U87AI and the like.
      Interface suggestions are:
      Low-end: Audient Evo or other Audient devices. Focusrite Scarletts are popular. SSL seems to be popular as well.
      Mid is the Apollo Solo.
      High end is the Apollo Twin or RME Babyface.
      You don’t need a mic preamp but if you’re after the sound of a nice analog preamp, then the Apollo interfaces are awesome. You can emulate a lot of classic preamps and channel strips right on the device. I highly recommend, if you can afford one.
      I hope this helps! Cheers!

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, Walter! I’m kind of torn between the CM4 and the Oktava MK-012. The Oktava has a warmth that is hard to replicate. But the CM4 has an overall balance that I really enjoy. I mean, there were no pointy harsh frequencies at all. So impressed! Happy 2023!!

    • @WaltervanDusen
      @WaltervanDusen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheRecordist thank you. For 2022 I’m really working hard to have much better audio for my interview videos from on location and trade shows. I’m currently using a Rode NTG2 that I’ve had for many years but I want something “better” for my voice that has a better sound to it overall.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WaltervanDusen understood. For trade shows I would personally go with a dynamic mic to minimize the chatter around the interviewee. Even a Shure SM58 would be decent and that’s only $100 or so brand new. Shotgun mics are also good in those situations but the quality is hit and miss until you get into the $1000 range-except for the Røde NTG3 which is a fantastic mic and is sometimes on sale for less than $600. Oktava and Line Audio are great mics but the handling noise makes them less than acceptable for interviewing if hand-holding them. They’d be best in a shock-mount on a boom. They also have a wide pickup pattern with no interference tubes so they will pick up a lot of environmental noise along with the subject.
      I hope this helps!

    I bought a CM-4 for interviews in tight reverberant spaces where shotguns are in danger of getting that phasing thing. Amazing for that situation! Then I wanted a matched pair for recording a rock concert. I was informed by Roger that all CM-4s match…so I got a second CM-4. I set them up in X-Y pattern next to my camera at the back of the room and feeding into the DMW-XLR1 on the top of my Lumix camera, and the show was VERY loud so I was worried about distorting the diaphragm…no such issues and it sounded amazing!

    Ok, so I need to click that bell. I don't know how I missed this when it came out. WOW. These are wonderful. As for the self noise, I do not have a Sound Devices unit but I do have a Zoom F4, which has -127 dBu EIN and has +75 db of gain (Same as F8), my question is would this mic be good for indoor dialogue for narrative film? I know how much you like the Oktava MK 012 for that purpose. How do you think the CM4 compares to it for this purpose? Of course it is not a Schoeps or an MKH-50, but for "Oktava" level work I am very interested in how it compares. Thanks!! And the entertainment value of the video is worth more than the price of admission itself.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! I think they’re great for indoor dialogue, as long as the room is somewhat treated. It has a wider cardioid polar pattern than other SDC mics. That’s great for reducing off-axis coloration, but not great if you’re trying to isolate more.
      I actually used a CM4 mic for this video as well: th-cam.com/video/6wbT8wHtJIU/w-d-xo.html
      It turned out a bit dark, but I was doing an experiment with Soothe 2.
      Thanks for the compliment!!

    • @northcoaststudios
      @northcoaststudios ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheRecordist - I was afraid that might be the case since the CM4 is not super- or hyper-cardioid. The mic does have a great sound, and is appreciated even more at this price point, but I thought the slightly wider cardioid pattern might come into play. It is better suited for other tasks rather than narrative film when more side rejection is appreciated. Looks like I should still plan on getting the MK-012. It is also better than it should be at its price point. Thanks again for the info!!!

    I'm curious about how these microphones are used in the field, such as for recording a waterfall or in an urban setting. If I want to record everyday, travel, walk tour, TH-cam that talk from behind the camera and at some distance, I want to step into record elements for game and vocal and instruments for music too, after some research, I come to this 4 setups, Sennheiser MKE 440, MKE 600, Line Audio CW4 and Deity HD-TX, the video will be record using Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder, is this good minimal run and gun setup that deal with untreated room too? When to record in stereo and mono in my cases, music instruments and vocal all in stereo or each in mono, how about surround sound, do I need omnidirectional mic to create surround sound, or can just make a binaural setup to cover everything? Some say stereo mic not good for vocal, true? Shouldn't walk tour be surround sound, why people use directional mic for that? One TH-camr say pencil condenser cover wider field by not cancel the sides like shotgun mic, is this mean I can use just one pencil condenser to cover all the above stereo and mono needs?
    Should I get both or one between MKE 600 and CW4? Does the MKE 440 stereo good enough/better and I don't need two CW4? Can the CW4 catch same/further distance voice/sound compare to MKE 600? Do I need the shotgun mic or CW4 will do to record outdoor sound for game elements? How do I record my behind the camera voice if I use the MKE 440 stereo mic facing Front when walking, attach CW4 to HD-TX facing rear or 1 CW4 front 1 CW4 back? Can I use one of the MKE 440 stereo mics as mono shotgun mic? The camcorder has an option handle with 2 XLR inputs, do I need it, can I use it as music elements recorder? Do I need 32 bits?
    If I just want a small XLR recorder and not going to use the wireless transmission, is HD-TX worth it? Is it suitable to just attach a pencil condenser CW4 mic to it to record singing vocal and instruments that way and a MKE 600 shotgun mic to it to record elements and sound effects for game development? Can I record both the XLR and 3.5mm jack at same time in same and different tracks? Can I use it as a high res music player so I don't need to buy another dedicated music device which function just like an audio recorder that can't record high res audio but better at organisation to play music? Any other recorder recommendations?

    Very similar to my pair of CM3.
    I also have a pair of the omnidirectional OM1
    By the way, I don't know if this is of any interest, but Roger Jönsson is pronounced (something like)
    Rooger (with a hard g) Yearnson.

      Yearnsson would be right if you leave out the r in the middle.

    how do they compare to the mic boosters clippys? :)

    • @TheRecordist

      Hey there. Totally different kinds of mics. The CM4s are wide cardioid (directional) and the Clippys are omni. It depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Different tools for different jobs!

    About self noise: You could just record with lower gain settings and use a utility in the daw to gain. The thing is with self noise, in the analog world your gain structure is gonna precipitate the noise floor creating noise before it reaches clipping, whereas in the digital world you're working with a floating points bit depth. Which means gaining too much above a certain treshold is mostly gonna result in clipping, and not in added noise. You have much more headroom to work with.

      Yep. Absolutely. I covered some of this in my How to Record Digital Audio video. Thanks for chiming in!

    13:32 that’s not really how self noise works is it? preamp noise is preamp noise and self noise is the noise of the microphone itself.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s both. The mic needs gain but on its own it is still less than 13dB of noise - which is acceptable. But since it needs more gain than other mics of its class, if your preamp is noisy, it’ll accentuate that.
      An example is that a dynamic mic such as a Shure SM7B doesn’t have any self noise to speak of. But they’re so low-powered that the noise comes from the preamp as it’s being cranked to push it.

      @@TheRecordist so then isn’t this a question of self noise vs sensitivity?

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  9 หลายเดือนก่อน
