@yey6561 I've found it in Warrior of the Mind, it plays when young!Ody is looking for Athena, it's in the background at the start of Polyphemus when they're asking "it's almost too perfect (...) why would the lotus eaters pass up on all this food?" and I swear there's a version of it during Survive playing along with Odysseus's commands to his men and again when Polyphemus kills them. There's also a kinda slow and bit of it after he yells "you're alone!" at Athena in My Goodbye and I think it's in the background while he's talking privately with Eurylochus in How Much Longer too? My kid also swears she hears it in the wind instruments of Keep Your Friends Close and then again when they open the bag, but I don't hear it personally, IDK maybe she has a better ear than me lol. One that's loud and clear though - the sailors call out "captain! Captain!" to the tune of the danger motif as they're drowned in Ruthlessness, and when they call to him again in the Underworld. Also tell me if I'm wrong but isn't that it at the beginning of Puppeteer when he's talking to Eurylochus? When Eury is all "yo I need to talk to you" and Ody tells him to stfu and go check the island? Which would make sense because this is the second foreshadowing of Eury's turn on him later in the story. It's clear as day when they finally do fight in Mutiny. It's in the dance music when Circe's singing to the soldiers in the same song, and then it appears again in Thunderbringer. I stg Thunderbringer is basically this tune with extra steps lol which makes sense Zeus is a scary motherfucker he's just not looking to kill Ody. Anyways I'm not gonna dive too much into the unfinished songs but yeah it's there a bunch. Also I might be imagining it but I swear there's like a half version of the melody or the chord version or something that plays other times in the background, like when he starts prepping himself to kill the baby in Just A Man or when he's discussing the island with his friends in Full Speed Ahead or at some points during the Cyclops encounters, it's in Circe's songs and the beginning of the Underworld song. Like I could swear loads of bits have the same, IDK chord progression or something? Not the same tune but like an echo of it. Maybe someone more musically educated can tell me lol.
I love how most of the motifs are like shown with instruments, slightly in the background. But with Poseidon, it has to be SAID with words, all up in your face just showing how dangerous poseidon really is
Omg, I just realised 'We came across a palace We heard a voice inside It seemed to show no malice To greet it was our choice But nothing prepared us for the power That awaited inside...' Has that melody
Holy shit! I just found it with the help of your comment. When I found out about ‘danger is nearby’ I thought that the cyclops saga must have had it somewhere but always failed to detect it when Polyphemus said ‘WHO ARE YOU?’ Or when he tells Odysseus he has a gift for him.
After you explained, what a 'danger is near' motif was, I finally understood why certain video games, like (one that I'm currently playing) 'God of war: Ragnarok', before we go head on into battle the atmosphere is calm and you can only hear the sounds of wildlife or the winds, and the sounds of kratos grunting (etc etc), but as soon as soon as we near the danger the music itself starts to shift, darkening as we venge forward, as if the entire make-belief world has gone quiet. in amidst to the battle, has our ears fall deaf amongst the winds, noises of wildlife, etc etc and onto the monsters, bosses, giant bosses (so on and so forth) awaiting to see, wether we succeed or not - which, to carry on the game you have to succeed, which can lead to quite a few trials and errors If your working our a strategy to take down the danger that your facing -, the 'danger is near' moti' in songs, games, etc etc is quite litteraly, the world of fantasy saying that we've just run into danger, and we're either screwed or we survive.
Ooooh, I never noticed this motif, that's so cool!! I noticed another motif like this throughout the Circe Saga, actually!! I've been calling it "The Circe Theme." You hear it for the first time in Puppeteer when Eurolychus returns from the island without any of his men. Once you hear the rest of the saga, you realize that it's supposed to be foreshadowing that Circe did something to the rest of the crew because the theme plays before her character sings for the first time. It's played by what I'm guessing is viola (since Circe's "instrument" seems to be strings instruments, particularly violins and violas). And it continues to show up throughout the rest of the Saga in various places. Very clever foreshadowing, incorporation, and motif work, Jay!! Note: If you want a few more motifs and song references from the Circe Saga, here are a few I noticed!! 1. Full Speed Ahead motif- Right at the beginning, the harp pattern is a callback to “Full Speed Ahead,” specifically the line that goes “Polites, gear up, you and I’ll go ahead, we should try to find a way no one ends up dead” based on the number of syllables. This is super interesting because that line directly refers to exploring new land like Eurylochus and Odysseus are doing in this song. However, the last time that Odysseus went to explore new land, with Polites, they ended up being led into a cave that killed his best friend. It's a super neat connection because in this similar situation, Odysseus is worried that the new land will be dangerous, so he's having his men observe it. It's also foreshadowing, though, because in Full Speed Ahead, the land exploration led to disaster. Similarly, as we find out later in the soundtrack and story, the same thing happens here- Odysseus's men disappear into this palace and don't return. It's literally direct foreshadowing hidden before our very eyes- disaster is just waiting ahead. 2. "Eurolychus is Worried" motif- When the piano begins for Eurylochus’s singing in Puppeteer, it’s, once again, a direct callback to one of the other Saga songs, this time “Luck Runs Out” from the Ocean Saga. When Eurylochus is telling Odysseus that he is worried about possible disaster that lies ahead because they keep taking risks, this same left-hand piano riff plays, just in a different key signature. In comparison, this same riff plays at the beginning of Puppeteer when Eurylochus is telling Odysseus that there’s something that needs to be said. However, it is quickly dismissed by Odysseus. Based on this logic, my guess is that Eurylochus was going to try to tell Odysseus that they were taking too much of a chance simply trusting the path that lies ahead, including the palace on this new island. It seems to be a pattern: whenever this piano riff plays, Eurylochus confesses his worries about people dying because of a possible danger. Very clever pattern, and a great way to silently tell the listeners what he was going to say. 3. "Odysseus is Clever" motif (credit to @lexiwolfe651 for helping me piece this one together)- This is the guitar riff at the very beginning of "The Horse and the Infant" along with two inclusions within Done For and one in Remember Them. Basically, whenever this guitar riff plays, it typically means that Odysseus is planning something clever, whether that is how to attack in battle, how to trick Circe, or how to trick the cyclops. Hope you enjoyed!!
This was so good! I also noticed some of this things when I heard them, like the "Penelope's motif" in "There are other ways" when Odysseus rejected Circe and was going to start singing about her, I already knew what was going to happen and what or more like who he was going to sing about when he said "I can't!", I already knew that it was his wife whom he had in mind when he said that but the "Penelope's motif" that came right after he said that made it clear and reinforced that, all before he actually started to talk about his wife, so we can also know when he is thinking about his family, his wife and son, even without him mentioning them or before he says anything through motifs related to them, not only when he actually starts to talk about them and the motifs play in the background while he does it like in "The Horse an the Infant", when we are first introduced to "Penelope's motif" when Odysseus starts to talk about his wife and her motif plays as he does so while he sings her name following the melody of her motif, and also later in the song when Zeus and the chorus created by him name her and the voices of the chorus sing her name like Odyseus did when talking about his wife earlier following the melody of her motif, motifs of certain characters could also play in any other moment that is about the character related to that motif in particular having their moment and doing or talking about something or about to take some action or say something, like in the song "The Challenge" which still hasn't come out but it's a song about Penelope sung by her and her motif is very present there, along of course with the instruments related to her, wich are string instruments like the violin and viola (even though I'm not very good at detecting specific instruments)
I think the "horse and the infant" motif you're referring to here might be what I think of as the "Odysseus has a plan/Odysseus is being clever" motif. The electric guitar riff, right? It plays right at the beginning of Done For when he's entering the palace to confront Circe, and again as their confrontation is ramping up. It shows up a few other places as well, like in the Cyclops saga ("if nobody hurts you, be silent").
@@lexiwolfe651, yes, it plays every time Odysseus is using his cunning, Jorge said it too, that's why it plays at certain moments in songs like "The Horse and the Infant" and "Done for", when he's putting his cunning into play
@@doloresgronenberg5882 Yeah, I heard that motif!! The Penelope one is so clever because with the motif, I knew that he was going to talk about his wife before it happened. It's very smart!!
Your Navi impression is on point. 😂👍 Also, I love the 'Danger is Nearby' motif. It's one of my favourites in the whole musical. The way Poseidon's name is sung is such a cool detail!! This makes me want to go through all of the EPIC songs again and pay more attention to this motif. It's amazing to see how much planning goes into writing the songs once you start analyzing them.
I think I've caught it a few more times, I think the crew are singing "Captain" to this motif both when Poseidon kills them, and when they are in the underworld right before the line, "Why would you let the Cyclops live when ruthlessness is MERCY?"
I would hear it and my brain would autofill in the soldiers singing "Captain! Captain!" like in the Underworld snippet we got, kinda like warning him, or at least trying to get him to pay attention. And the final note of the rift is kinda like them saying "Look!"
I absolutely LOVE that motif in The Horse And The Infant and I like to spin around and jump, and, well, I think you can call it dancing when I hear it. I often wondered what it meant, so thank you for clearing that up!
Okay, so this made me go back and listen to some of the other songs, and oh my god??? I just heard it in 'Polyphemus', before the cyclops even announces his presence- OwO Jorge, you're a goshdarn genius :D
You know, when I heard this motif in the first song of the cyclops saga, I always imagined that the Viola being played was Penelope telling Odysseus to get out of there and to get to safety, warning him of the danger.
I noticed that in school today! I was listening to some of the songs in my headphones and i noticed that repeating melody! That makes so much sense now!💛💛💛
follow up- I replayed it in my head and it made me even more excited for "King" because if I'm not mistaken the way they chant "Odysseus" is a variation of the motif, meaning that he is in fact Heisenberg (being the danger, and all)
As soon as you played it I could immediately pick out all the times I had heard it! Thats so cool! And hiding it in such a clever way during Poseidon’s introduction?! GAH!!! Musical composition seems like so much fun with how creative and subtle you can get with little details like that! And how they can add such an important subconscious layer to any piece! So cool!
No way, my mind is blown, everything I knew was a lie! This is exactly why I can’t ever get enough of this musical, there’s always something new to surprise me again and again ❤
So i was watching an animatic for "king" and someone made a similiar ovservation about the songs, in "survive" you hear the name polyphemus chanted over and over and in poseidon as said in this video you can hear his name chanted. In king you can hear the name Odysseus chanted over and over as he now represents the danger, the threat that the suitors must overcome. And i think thats just awesome.
I never noticed that! I absolutely adore the whole musical and those little details make me so excited over and over again! You're a music mage, Mr. Jalapeño.
Noticed it the first time with the cyclop and thought if Poseidon had it it was to symbolize their connection...... .... In a way i was not wrong. Just didn't have the full story 😂 what an amazing work there!
dude dude dude I love epics motifs that drive me insane actually this musical will be the death of me it has consumed my brain like it is a brain eating parasite and I am it’s host. I’m can’t do this anymore it’s literally a backing track in my mind omfg. Who needs a lover when u have epic the musical man this shot changed my life in a way not even the gods could (u can quote me on that causes I’m right so they can’t strike me down)
Here’s the songs that i think I heard this motif. 1)”the horse and the infant”right before Zeus is revealed. 2)”full speed ahead”right as the lotus island is spotted. 3)”Polyphemus”right before poly says “who are you?”. 4)”keep your friends close” I think I hear it as Aeolus is scolding Ody for not keeping the bag closed. 5)”ruthless” obviously what you said and for this song and song 1. 6)”puppeteer” I think right as Eurylochus leaves to scout the island I could be mistaken. But that’s all I could find please correct me if I missed any.
Love the Musical saga of Epic, these are my personal favorite songs from each Saga •Troy Saga: Just a Man •Cyclops Saga: Survive •Ocean Saga: Ruthlessness •Circe Saga: There are other ways
I went to go listen for the motif in the beginning of Polyphemus and it took me a minute, but I finally heard it in the background when Odysseus is talking right before Polyphemus appears
oh my gosh I just asked him about that exact thing on the discord server the other day!!!! it's all over the place!! I haven't actually found it in the circe saga yet tho
It's so cool how you hear this motif in different ways, before I realized it was intentional I kept hearing it and my brain would vocalize it as "Danger... Danger!" So that's just so neat to see that it's completely on purpose. And the Poseidon one in particular is SOOOO good that's such a chilling opening to Ruthlessness.
I knew I heard a consistent motif through out the songs but I couldn’t put my finger on it! About to go listen to all the songs and search for it now 😂
Here are all the danger motifs I can find in epic: 1. The horse and the infant: it was mentioned in video, but there’s also one right before Zeus appears 2. Warrior of the mind:When Odysseus it talking to the ‘person’ he can’t see (which turns out to be athena). It starts around when Odysseus says ‘show yourself’ for the first time. 3. Polyphemus: Right before Polyphemus appears with ‘who are you?’ It starts at ‘it’s almost too perfect’ I don’t hear it again in this saga but I’m sure it’s somewhere else. 4. In ruthlessness, as mentioned in the video (but I would have never heard it myself) I don’t hear it anywhere in the Circe saga but it’s probably there somewhere 5. The underworld: The interlude before Odysseus says ‘all I hear are screams’ and after Odysseus finishes addressing his men. It plays continuously for another verse of the motif. 6. No longer you: for a short time at the beginning before the prophet speaks (though I’m not sure it really counts) and at the end of no longer you(not sure if this counts either) and I think I heard it really faintly at ‘I see your wife with a man who is haunting…’ I feel like it would aslo be somewhere in suffering and different beast but I never hear it 7. Scylla: I think it’s somewhere in the deep down but I have to text it out to be sure(it’s probably not there) 8. Mutiny: Right before eurelochus (I don’t think I spelt it right) and Odysseus fight, and immediately after eurelochus killed the cow and it doesn’t stop till the end of the song.
I noticed this in the crew screaming “Captain” in Ruthlessness too - and in the very next song it plays slowly in the intro, making it clear that Odysseus is still thinking of their screams as Eury’s trying to talk to him 💀
The details and effort he puts into these songs are amazing like one thing I noticed is in puppeteer there’s motifs from other songs like I’m pretty sure Luck Runs Out and full speed ahead
So yeah, you convinced me to listen to the whole thing again to try to find this motif. I really like how it's not just Poseidon who's dangerous but Athena too. The beginning of My Goodbye has the motif. So cool!
YESSSSSSS I'M SO HAPPY I PICKED UP ON THIS, it's my favorite motif in the show! I kept wondering what it signified and my guess wasn't too far off the mark; I guessed that it was supposed to represent the flow of battle since you obviously can't depict it too much without muddying things, musically
Hey Jay I love what you’ve done man, quite the inspiration. I also feel like the danger motif is repeated in Ruthlessness also when Poseidon is sinking the ships in the men crying out “Captain! Captain!” You’ve done something remarkable and as a fellow musician (mainly guitar) I really respect your work.
this musical is gonna single handedly make me buy a super nice pair of headphones so i can hear all this and honestly ive never been more excited about something!!!!!!

follow up- I replayed it in my head and it made me even more excited for "King" because if I'm not mistaken the way they chant "Odysseus" is a variation of the motif, meaning that he is in fact Heisenberg (being the danger, and all)
Damnit now I gotta go listen to all the songs again to see how often I can hear this
Thats fine. I can spend another hour listening to all the songs again. 🥰
I AM NEARBY!!
great, Now I need to listen to every song and find this motif.
This man’s a fucking genius round of applause for u king
Welp, here we go, another thing i won't be able to unhear now, off to relisten to the whole thing again🤷❤
So cool!
I’ve heard this before and now it all makes sense🤯
It’s also played in Warrior of the Mind, right when young odysseus’ being watched by Athena (show yourself, I know you’re watching me, show yourself)
No way, my mind is blown, everything I knew was a lie! This is exactly why I can’t ever get enough of this musical, there’s always something new to surprise me again and again ❤
There is so much thought and work put into this, thank you Mr Jalepeno for this incredible piece of art
0:19 for the start of the motif if your trying to memorize it
LITERALLY BRILLIANT
The way I was like “hmmm positrons intro sounds a lil familiar but in probably just crazy” THATS WHY
dude dude dude I love epics motifs that drive me insane actually this musical will be the death of me it has consumed my brain like it is a brain eating parasite and I am it’s host. I’m can’t do this anymore it’s literally a backing track in my mind omfg. Who needs a lover when u have epic the musical man this shot changed my life in a way not even the gods could (u can quote me on that causes I’m right so they can’t strike me down)
This did just turn into a mini rant cause I literally cannot talk about epic and not go on at least a mini rant
But that’s all I could find please correct me if I missed any.
i KNEW i recognised the motif with poseidons entrance
My jaw dropped when you talked about the motif appearing in Poseidon's introduction INCREDIBLE well done you brilliant mind you
I went looking for it right after watching it and of course found that there's a cello version in "King" when the suitors are talking to each other.
Love the Musical saga of Epic, these are my personal favorite songs from each Saga
•Troy Saga: Just a Man
•Cyclops Saga: Survive
•Ocean Saga: Ruthlessness
•Circe Saga: There are other ways
I actually hadn't noticed it before! That's so cool!
BECAUSE THE DANGER IS RIGHT THERE
THE VIOLA FINALLY GETS REPRESENTATION
One of the many things I love about your work is how you put things like this into it. Fantastic layers! 💖
Odysseus' Spider Sense.
Also, "I look into your eyes, and I..." the guitar... the damn guitar...
Danger's not nearby, but it's there...
I need to listen to every song again 👀
I went to go listen for the motif in the beginning of Polyphemus and it took me a minute, but I finally heard it in the background when Odysseus is talking right before Polyphemus appears
YES it was like "why would the lotus eaters pass up on all this food?" and in the background you can hear the music like "OH YOU GON FIND OUT"
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MY GOD
EPIC SHOULD BE STUDIED IN MUSIC CLASSES FR
All I know is this was Casper’s name of existence for the first few sagas haha
This is why I consider you a musical genius. All of these little motif’s are wonderful storytelling tools.
1:08 it would be funny if Jay said “because the DANGER IS RIGHT THERE!” and Steven was standing behind him.
Jay: Oh hey Steven.
oh my gosh I just asked him about that exact thing on the discord server the other day!!!! it's all over the place!! I haven't actually found it in the circe saga yet tho
Genius !😊
Everyone Who worked on epic did a amazing job
It's so cool how you hear this motif in different ways, before I realized it was intentional I kept hearing it and my brain would vocalize it as "Danger... Danger!"
So that's just so neat to see that it's completely on purpose.
And the Poseidon one in particular is SOOOO good that's such a chilling opening to Ruthlessness.
I knew I heard a consistent motif through out the songs but I couldn’t put my finger on it! About to go listen to all the songs and search for it now 😂
One of my favorite parts by far!! I hear that and know that something musically awesome is gonna come almost right after
Love the Navi impression
Love how motifs in musicals fit together like puzzle pieces and make the listening experience golden
I fricking LOVE little details like this. That is amazing. I love how much thought you’ve put into this.
Here are all the danger motifs I can find in epic:
1. The horse and the infant: it was mentioned in video, but there’s also one right before Zeus appears
2. Warrior of the mind:When Odysseus it talking to the ‘person’ he can’t see (which turns out to be athena). It starts around when Odysseus says ‘show yourself’ for the first time.
3. Polyphemus: Right before Polyphemus appears with ‘who are you?’ It starts at ‘it’s almost too perfect’
I don’t hear it again in this saga but I’m sure it’s somewhere else.
4. In ruthlessness, as mentioned in the video (but I would have never heard it myself)
I don’t hear it anywhere in the Circe saga but it’s probably there somewhere
5. The underworld: The interlude before Odysseus says ‘all I hear are screams’ and after Odysseus finishes addressing his men. It plays continuously for another verse of the motif.
6. No longer you: for a short time at the beginning before the prophet speaks (though I’m not sure it really counts) and at the end of no longer you(not sure if this counts either) and I think I heard it really faintly at ‘I see your wife with a man who is haunting…’
I feel like it would aslo be somewhere in suffering and different beast but I never hear it
7. Scylla: I think it’s somewhere in the deep down but I have to text it out to be sure(it’s probably not there)
8. Mutiny: Right before eurelochus (I don’t think I spelt it right) and Odysseus fight, and immediately after eurelochus killed the cow and it doesn’t stop till the end of the song.
The level of thought that you have put into this musical is inspiring!
I noticed this in the crew screaming “Captain” in Ruthlessness too - and in the very next song it plays slowly in the intro, making it clear that Odysseus is still thinking of their screams as Eury’s trying to talk to him 💀
Hoooooly shi-! How did I not notice this?!?! That’s so cool?!?!?!
So cool!
I like how he always manages to fill me up with his content
Didn’t consciously realize it, but the chills up by spine did!
So it's basically boss music
yes
I love it when you reveal details like this!
It gives more depth to the songs and when you hear motifs and melodies you think, aha! There it is
YESSSSSSS I'M SO HAPPY I PICKED UP ON THIS, it's my favorite motif in the show! I kept wondering what it signified and my guess wasn't too far off the mark; I guessed that it was supposed to represent the flow of battle since you obviously can't depict it too much without muddying things, musically
I think my favourite, slightly more camouflaged appearance is in Survive, when Polyphemus' name is sung in the opening
Do you plan on releasing the instrumentals of these songs?
Dude, we gonna need a detailed score book at the end of this
Best way to continue racking up streams😂 show the motif and say go look for it yourself. Very clever Mr. Jorgy Gorgy
stunning
Hey Jay I love what you’ve done man, quite the inspiration. I also feel like the danger motif is repeated in Ruthlessness also when Poseidon is sinking the ships in the men crying out “Captain! Captain!” You’ve done something remarkable and as a fellow musician (mainly guitar) I really respect your work.
You are a melody genius ❤ I love when you reveal these things in post song releases .
this musical is gonna single handedly make me buy a super nice pair of headphones so i can hear all this
and honestly ive never been more excited about something!!!!!!
I did! Did not disappoint
THATS WHY THAT PART OF HIS SONG HITS SO HARD
Mr. Jimbo this is UNREAL timing I noticed this theme in Warrior of the Mind and Ruthlessness the other day and was going to make a video LITERALLY TOMORROW demanding answers. Thank you for the answers I can sleep peacefully now
