When I spoke, I barely recognised my voice. “You’re going to call off that storm,” I snarled. Poseidon laughed mockingly. “Or what? You can’t kill me.” He had endured millennia of pain, yet he had not learned anything. I smiled cruelly as I picked up his trident - the irony - and turned to face him. There was something in his face that I recognised, that I had seen in my crew’s face as he mercilessly killed them all. Fear. Yet he tried to hide it. For what would the world say when a mortal had beaten a god? But I had nothing to fear, for I had no way to get back home because I couldn’t believe he would let up that storm. My thirst for revenge may as well be sated. “Exactly.” I held up the trident, ready to attack. I prowled towards him as his features morphed into an indescribable mask of emotions, but fear was one that was palpable on his face. Why he didn’t blast me into dust, I didn’t know. And I didn’t care. If he was pleading with me, I couldn’t hear it. I brought down the trident. His breathing turned into gasps as he cried out in agony. His yell was powerful enough to bring down Athens, yet it was music to my ears. Golden ichor splattered everywhere, drenching his clothes as it slowly spread to the rocks. I, too, was covered in the godly blood. And as I brought down the trident, repeatedly, I yelled at him. I yelled of my heartbreak, of my helplessness, of my longing. My voice was more powerful than anything the ocean had to offer. “HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE HELPLESS? HOW DOES IT FEEL TO KNOW PAIN?! I WATCHED MY FRIENDS DIE IN HORROR, CRYING AS THEY WERE ALL SLAIN! I HEARD THEIR FINAL MOMENTS, CALLING FOR ME IN VAIN!” My words brought forth so many painful memories, and so much grief I tried to hide over so many years, yet I embraced it. I aimed for the throat, this time, to stop his yelling. He gurgled and heaved after I ripped it out. “YOU DIDN’T STOP WHEN I BEGGED YOU, TOLD ME TO CLOSE MY HEART! YOU SAID THE WORLD WAS DARK!” “You…monster!” He accused, weakly pointing a finger at me. I’ve heard that word to describe me before, but 7 years spent on Calypso’s island have allowed me time to reflect, and I wasn’t a true monster. I was doing what I wanted to do. Now, I was doing what needed to be done. I raised the trident one last time, aiming for the head. I brought it down with all my strength, fury, and grief, and I roared the very words that he had first uttered to me, the lesson imprinted inside my brain. “DIDN’T YOU SAY THAT RUTHLESSNESS IS MERCY UPON OUR- “ “All right.” The trident hovered an inch above his head. I so desperately wanted to do it, to make him suffer as he had made me suffer, but his voice was no longer mocking or accusing. “Please…” His voice was guttural, and pleading. It was unnatural for a god. But the ocean was now a glittering calm, a beautiful thing. It was hard to believe just moments ago it was a raging typhoon. My way home was clear, the final obstacle dispersed. I dropped the trident with a resounding clang. I took one last look at Poseidon, his flesh in tatters, the surrounding rocks soaked in golden ichor, his features twisted into an expression of shame. Ashamed to have been beaten by a mere mortal. My robes swished as I turned my back on him and my eyes on my homeland. I would get to see Penelope and Telemachus again. Yet as I took the first step, he spoke again. I felt a faint flicker of annoyance. When would he give up? But as I heard his words, my body locked down, not even a single muscle moving, in anger. “After everything you’ve done, how will you sleep at night?” His voice was once again taunting, mocking me, goading me. He truly didn’t learn from his mistakes. My hands curled into fists. After everything I’ve done? He took everything from me. He made me suffer 10 more long years at sea, away from everything I’ve ever known. He killed 11 ships in my fleet, he killed my only friends, and for what? A blinded cyclops I'm sure he didn't give a damn about. I didn’t want to leave him hanging, yet saying something as elaborate as 5 words was above me. As my eyes swept over my island, yearning more than anything to see my family, I uttered four words, leaving him in the fiery grasp of the pain I inflicted. “Next to my wife.”
