I have a 7 mo old cavapoo. He is a sweetheart, but the brushing was an issue until we determined we like his coat shorter. Now it is much more manageable.
Brought home an 8 week doberman puppy, and it's definitely a challenge 😅 she gets up every 2 hours at night and whine to go outside. Im thinking we need to adjust her schedule to feed her earlier bc 7pm is not cutting it
It's pretty normal to be getting up that often right now. This gets better with time but also with crate training. We don't recommend feeding her any earlier. An empty stomach might prevent her from sleeping well.
My pup has been easy like Feta, and I am lucky, he is a Choco Lab x German Wirehair. Before I got him, I did a lot of research and learned how to train him so he can be my service dog. So far he is getting everything so quick, well except potty training. We are both struggling with that 😅.
It sounds like you're doing great! Potty training definitely takes time - for puppy brain development and for the routine to be established. You'll get there! If you haven't seen it yet, this free kit has all the best tips on potty training! www.howtotrainadreamdog.com
I'm loving your videos and thank you so much for them! I've raised several puppies over the years, but we're about to have our first in 13 years. And are in fact adopting two 8-week old Boston Terrier littermates (btw, that's the breed I've always had, but never two at once). Any tips or tricks for training TWO AT ONCE??? Thanks so much!
Two pups at once is definitely a handful. Please check out this important video about littermates and how to avoid an unhealthy bond between them: th-cam.com/video/p_RDIS9yoVo/w-d-xo.html
This was really helpful, thanks. I've taken (and reviewed) your crate course, which is great... pup is on day 5, so 8.5 weeks old... so my windows of opportunity are scarce and maybe you did more than mention this above, but it would be super helpful to see the training challenges with Feta, super unicorn dog, re the x-pen. My huge issue is: my pup is not food motivated! (!!!) So although I'm happy with the crate training so far (this comment sponsored by Puppy Crate Naps) the x-pen training is really hard because rewarding is so hard. Please show your challenge videos if you can! Sometimes seeing the tried-and-fails helps a lot... (p.s. I wait to feed her and do a bit of training when she's hungry, but she also has a thimble for a stomach.)
Being confident in the pen while alone is a skill that takes time. Puppies are not very good at that at first. It doesn't come naturally. You can start to apply the crate games to the pen, but take it at a very slow pace so it is a positive experience for her. You'll get there, but pen training just takes more time and training.

8 week old rescue small breed pup has been ill, so it makes things even harder. No videos addressing this. PLEASE make one! Both of my rescues have had tummy issues for several weeks after due to infections.
Young puppies often have tummy troubles. Just keep working with your vet to get those resolved. And don't worry about training. Just stick with potty training and crate training and getting on a good schedule and the rest pf the skills can be worked on when your pup feels better. If your puppy is on a limited diet you can use his food for training treats. If you add warm water to it and mush it up it can also be a good Kong filler!
I am interested in getting a Cavapoo puppy. I haven't been a puppy mom in at least 25 years. My lovely little Cocker son, Cody, lived to be 19, and since he has passed I haven't had the ❤ to get another puppy. I love dogs, and I feel ready, but I have forgotten everything he ever taught me. It's time to start over. I thought this time, I would start training myself before I let her/him train me. Cody was a wonderful guy, and I got lucky, but there are things I need to do differently....now that I am no longer a "puppy" myself. In fact, my age almost discouraged me from trying this again. I am 71 yo, and I worry about my new dog out living me. My mother, who is 94, said, "What?" She told me there are no guarantees...even if you're 22 yo. I think she may have a point. Besides, my generation is living into their 100s. So, I am committed to making a little guy's/gal's live wonderful....and mine too!

We have a 9 week old Boston Terrier, we got her at 7 weeks. Her name is Bella and she is our 2nd time owning a Boston. We lost our first Boston, Nola about 4 months ago. We got Nola when she was 6 months old and she was a breeze to train! Bella on the other hand is not but she is much younger

Hey, I just recently got my puppy, but I’m struggling with teaching her tricks like sit, or lay down. And I’m trying to potty train her, but we keep catching her accidents late. And I don’t really know how to take care of a puppy that’s eight weeks. Now for the crate I think it’s going well because when she started to whine, I ignored her and she ended up falling asleep, and when I put her in there, she doesn’t bark.
You will find some great information on potty training in this free digital kit! It can also help you with how young puppies think and learn and how best to train them: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com
Hi! I am about to recieve a 8 week old toy maltipoo puppy and I was wondering if potty training is possible to do indoor and outdoors because once I go back to school in sept my parents will be out of the house.. so we won't be able to let him out to go potty. I wanted to try training him both ways to make my life and my parent's a little easier. Note: My breeder said that their puppies are puppy pad trained when we pick them up
Puppies learn best from consistency and routine. Unfortunately if you allow your puppy to go potty indoors (even on a pee pad) you'll likely see accidents indoors for a lifetime. Keep in mind that young puppies have other needs, not just potty. So you might want to get a pet sitter or dog walker to drop in on your puppy and take care of food, potty, enrichment, exercise and training tasks while you're at school.
We just got our corgi, she's 7 and a half weeks. We got her a bit early after being cleared by the vet because our breeder was pregnant and her due date was the puppy's 8 week mark. I work 8 hour in an office and I'm worried about having her in a crate that long and not playing enough or sleeping enough!! Im so stressed. Shes been great and sleep in the crate really well. But not 8 hours.
You are right, a young puppy can't be in the crate for 8 hours. A 7 weeks old she probably needs a potty break every hour or two, and then she has all kinds of other needs including meals, enrichment, training, exposure to the world and also snuggle time! This video can give you some good ideas on working while having a puppy. th-cam.com/video/Vcl33se8dEA/w-d-xo.html
My puppy is a 14 week old male golden retriever named Ollie, we got him at 8 weeks old and the first 3 weeks were pure hell, but he did sleep through the night in his crate from day one (thank goodness) . This is my 4th golden that I have owned but the first male, the first 3 were females. They were easier to potty train, were less mouthy and more cuddly. At 14 weeks he has the basics down, sit, come, stay, leave it, drop it, a pretty dependable fetch and has not had a potty accident in 2 weeks. He has been introduced to the leash and he is okay on it but I have not pushed it too much as of yet, I have been holding off until he is at least 16 weeks before I get too hard core with the leash. He is still mouthy but better and he is starting to cuddle more when he gets tired. Unfortunately our other dog is a 2 year old Pomeranian (5 lbs) and he plays too rough with her, once he gets his full rounds of vaccinations he will be going to puppy day care so he can play with dogs of the same size.
I picked up my puppy Saturday. Sometimes she whines when I put her in crate but is fast asleep right away. She loves to bite, but she’s only 2 months old, so that’s expected.
You're in the right place for some great advice. Have you joined our Facebook group? You can ask questions if you have them! facebook.com/groups/1608055795943295
New subscriber here. I am e joying your videos. Questions... You mentioned that if any other famy member worked with the pup Y they would have to start with the basics and work up. How does that work if you are using an outside trainer?
Our puppies learn best when provided with structure and consistency. The mechanics that you are using might not be the same as the mechanics your outside trainer is using. The best option would be to hold practice sessions together so that you can ensure that you, the other handler, and your puppy are all on the same page!
Kibble is just the term we use for a dog's normal dog food. Whatever brand or type you choose, we call it "kibble". It tends to refer to the dry balls. Kibble can be a great motivator for training!
I got a 8 week old mixed German shepherd and she wakes up at 4am in the morning wanting to play. Is there tips please so that she sleeps through the night
New 2 weeks old puppy owner here.. i have a question about my puppy going wild when i put on the leash . It is dead end for me for leash training. Any suggestions on how can i progress with this . I have tried getting his attention with treats but he keeps on getting wild like a wild horse on a trap.
Sounds like you'll need to take the introduction a little more slowly. Start by simply showing him the leash and pairing it with treats. With time (maybe days or longer) you can bring the leash closer until it touches him. We have the games for this desensitization in our training program: Puppy Perfection Training Program: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
Awesome video! I just picked up my first 8 week old puppy this week. I hate to say it, but he seems almost too calm for a puppy. He's a golden retriever, but he doesn't really play (except maybe for 5 minute bursts sparsely through the day) and doesn't really like going outside. It makes it a little hard because I'm a hobby farmer and do a lot of outdoor activities, but he'd rather hunker down and cry/whine. He also came from a farm and has been around other animals/used to the sounds and such that they make. I worry that maybe something is wrong since every video I see all the puppies are hyper and excited to play. Is it normal for an 8 week old puppy to be so sleepy and calm?
It sounds like he's still getting used to his new home. Take it slow and let him adjust at a pace that is comfortable for him. You want to keep his new experiences positive. He might need a little more time before being introduced to all the things outside. Focus on giving him a calm environment, cuddling and starting to get on a schedule. You'll probably see his personality emerge in just a little while.
I just got my eight week Yorkie He’s a good boy but after 5 minutes he’s biting alot. I have to take a blank with me just to grab him He does the belly rub. massage and let’s me hold him but I don’t know why he’s biting going for feet/ankles 😢 I love him but any advice I’m so happy I found your videos

Loved meeting Feta. This was such a great video, so I shared it with some friends who are thinking about getting a 9 week old goldendoodle puppy. Do males act up more than females? This was a question they had for me. I was not sure since I am new to the dog family life. Also, is it a good combo for a playdate for my 14 month goldendoodle to play with their 9 week old puppy? They are both mini goldendoodles. ❤
Great questions! Males do not necessarily "act up" more than females. Temperament can all depend on your puppy specifically, male or female! Ella is 9 weeks old now. She's been with us for a week. She's doing well overall but seems terrified of the pen. She's very comfortable with the crate. I put her in the pen so she can have more freedom but she barks, jumps and peed and pooped twice in there when we take our eyes off her for 2 mins. Should I delay the pen? I feel bad bc crate seems less room. She's 4 lb, havanese. Thank you!

😅 i have 2, 8 week old puppies and anytime i try to do exercises and training they start to distract each other and if i try to separate them they start to whine (they are litter mates)
This is very common with littermates. It will be important to 1) make sure that each one is very comfortable being in their own crate and 2) train them separately before you can train them together. Littermates are a lot of work on the human's part. This video can give you some other good tips: th-cam.com/video/p_RDIS9yoVo/w-d-xo.html

We get Griz tomorrow! He is a 7 week old golden retriever, aussie mix. We haven't had a puppy in a long time and we're a little nervous.
You're in the right place for great training info!
An empty stomach might prevent her from sleeping well.
excellent! the was spot on, and the content great. 😉
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Your awesome advice got us through the first weeks of puppy training much more smoothly than I had expected. Thanks!
Thank you so much, Peg! We are very happy to have helped you through puppy training!
Great video. Feta is adorable! What a lucky pup! It was so good to see you doing the training games with her!
She sure is! ❤️ Thank you for watching!
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Thank you so much!
Getting my 8 week old puppy. On May 15Th. Rough collie.

Did you get a new puppy? How did training go?
We just got 9 week old mini poodle daisy we go crazy in her crate and won’t sleep throughout the night but me wife been training
It definitely takes some time - and training - to help the pup love the crate. Have you seen this video? You and your wife can watch it together and come up with a training plan! th-cam.com/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/w-d-xo.html

Ima bout to get a puppy in the weekend
How exciting!
Wait longer to cut your eyes to your cue cards. Or let it flow so it’s more natural. Good info.
Thanks for watching!
This video can give you some good ideas on working while having a puppy. th-cam.com/video/Vcl33se8dEA/w-d-xo.html
no dog of any age should be in a crate for 8 hours in my opinion. you could hire a dog sitter or walker
Way to go, Michael!
I picked up my puppy Saturday. Sometimes she whines when I put her in crate but is fast asleep right away. She loves to bite, but she’s only 2 months old, so that’s expected.
Yes, these are all normal puppy behaviors. We love that you're getting great advice here!

Excuse my ignorance , but what is kibble? Is it a special food/treat? Thanks
Kibble is just the term we use for a dog's normal dog food. Whatever brand or type you choose, we call it "kibble". It tends to refer to the dry balls. Kibble can be a great motivator for training!

We have the games for this desensitization in our training program:

Thanks!
Thanks so much, Simone!

Should I wake my sleeping 8 week puppy to eat?
Nope! Let a sleeping puppy sleep!
Should the pup pen be removed?
When puppies are young, puppy-pens are a great tool to manage their environment! You can remove it a few months down the road once they've earned their free-roam opportunity.
@@HowToTrainADreamDog ok thanks for the tip!
