    I love your videos Michelle. You are the only trainer on TH-cam who doesn't make me feel like an abject failure You acknowledge that this puppy thing is a challenge. I find I have to remind Cap'n Jack what we are doing outside (poop and pee time) sometimes, but he is only 19 weeks old. He is on occasion while we are playing fetch or running around in the backyard, he will go over and have a pee and then come back to playing...I guess all signs he is growing and learning.

    Definitely keeping up with that schedule is critical! Of course we have accidents, we never get upset at him and definitely don't scold. We let the accident happen to so he doesn't get scared and start hiding to do it.

    So we have been following you and getting through your puppy training course since our Moose was 9 weeks old he's a Chihuahua Yorkie cross. Now he's 6 months old! He is doing SO well! We have decorated for Christmas and have put bells on the back door. Moose has figured out that when we open the door they ring. Now he rings them when he has to potty! WE haven't trained him to use the bells he just figured it out!!!

    I have A 13 week old puppy. I got her at 11 weeks. She is not the first pup I have trained and I couldnt figure out why I had been having trouble with my her playing outside when it was potty time period I. I totally forgot About separating play time from potty time. This video was so helpful. My pup, a mini goldendoodle is very smart and is catching on fast. I just need to remember not to send her mixed messages. Thank you for the reminder!! Great video!!!

    Thank you for this helpful video! I have an 11 week old puppy. I take him on frequent potty breaks and he "goes" almost every time I take him out. I also have older dogs who use our doggie door. Sometimes the puppy uses the doggy door to go outside to play (in our secure backyard, supervised). I am wondering if I am causing my pup to become confused by using 2 ways to get outside.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question. With a doggie door it becomes more difficult for you to control the timing and ability to praise him for doing the right thing (which is the most important part of dog training - catching them doing the right thing and celebrating them for it). If a dog has free access to the yard and is practicing behaviors that you ultimately don’t want reinforced (digging holes all over the yard, chasing animals off the property, reacting to things passing by, etc.) then we are setting them up for failure.

    The tip regarding taking them out only to potty and then a separate time to explore is great but also challenging when living in a condo; it takes a while just to go up and down. We take our 14 week puppy down and she usually goes after the prompt but does also plop on the grass and will need reminder to go.

    Hey! We got a Borzoi 2 weeks ago, she’s adorable and already turned 6 months last week. When she’s with us, she’s fantastic and doesn’t even behave like a puppy, once I left her sleeping alone for 20 minutes, that was enough for her to chew the arm of the sofa. She also does not potty many times, I take her out when she’s up, around 6am, she doesn’t do anything. Then she shows signs of wanting to pee, I take her out again and nothing. She eats, I take her out, nothing. Only at lunch time, when I take her for a long walk and run that she’s peeing and or pooping. A couple of times she did after her 1st meal, but mainly she holds until we’re out for the long walk. The. I take her out every 1,5 or 2 hours, she doesn’t do anything again! Long walk 2 hours after her dinner and nothing. Sometimes she does, sometimes she doesn’t do her business. Last potty break before bed and sometimes she pees, but it can take me 1 hour walking her until she finally does it. She has access to water all the time and eats fresh frozen(thawed) food. Is this normal?

    Getting my new puppy in Nov. I want to teach my puppy to go indoors. I have a condition that makes it hard for me to get around. It would be very convenient for me if my dog went potty in the bathroom like I do. I got one of those grass patches and tray to be her potty spot for in the bathroom. I don't mind having to clean up. I've had cats so i know what it's like to have to constantly clean up after an animal. What I'm wondering, would you still advise training her to go outside?

      It's great that you have the grass patch! It's always good to also train your pup to go potty outside so that if you need them to go potty in an unfamiliar place, they can do it anywhere grass is present. Hi! I have watched your potty training videos and the one on how to correct unwanted behaviours, but I'm still not sure about what to do when the puppy pees in the house to let her know that's not right. I do reward her when she goes outside, but should I just ignore when it's inside or do something?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! You've got the right idea with rewarding outside. Though yes, peeing inside is an unwanted behavior, it's only unwanted to the human. The dog is not intentionally peeing inside to upset you, so we must not correct them for this. Instead, think about which fundamental of potty training may need some extra work: Reward, Restrict, Clean and Routine. I got a question, we have a long deck leading to our back yard . At night for potty breaks this is not as convenient as taking the pup to go on front lawn to potty . Does it matter that the exact location of the potty as long as pup is going outside ? Like can I do backyard in the morning and and front yard at night until it’s fully trained to sleep at night. I do not have a puppy yet but we are hoping to get one in summer . We Want to be thoroughly prepared for little pup so the pup and our family are set up for success 😁 also do you recommend putting pup on leash every time for this purpose as well even if I am placing pup in a pen out in the grass to potty ? What if night potty training becomes a real challenge will using a fresh grass patch in the house effect things ?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions! Puppies learn from consistency and routine. At first it's best to have one potty area. If the deck is long, you might consider a grassy pad close to the door. We suggest you train him to go outside out of one particular door. Once you are out there you can teach him that there are multiple places to go. But if they are all on grass, that will help him learn faster.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We don't feel that dogs are "stubborn" or "difficult". Puppies may seem like they refuse to do things but it’s usually because 1. Confusion 2. Lack of motivation 3. Not enough reinforcement 4. Flooded with information - overstimulated. It's up to us as humans to figure out what is going on and how to approach the situation differently. It's likely that your puppy is confused about where you want her to go especially if you have pee pads down. You can watch this video all about why pee pads are confusing for your puppy th-cam.com/video/TaUV1q5RZD8/w-d-xo.html

    I live in NYC and was told by the rescue agency that the dog is not allowed outside until he gets his second set of vaccinations. Is there really a health concern if the puppy goes outside? If so what is it?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The concern is your puppy catching a disease like Parvo from other unvaccinated pups in highly trafficked areas. But there is way to bring your pup outside safely. If your vet tells you that your puppy is not allowed to go outside until they are fully vaccinated, I highly recommend looking for a new vet. Proper and **positive** socialization and exposure has lasting impacts on the rest of your dog’s life. The consequences of under socializing your puppy far outweigh the risks of safely getting out and about before they are fully vaccinated.
