    My puppy’s name is Lehua and he loves to bite basically anything. He probably loves his nubby rubber balls the most. He is 9 1/2 weeks old and one of the best puppies ever, and of course still quite a handful at times. I am so glad for all of your videos and sensible, clear advice.
    You are so detail oriented and really break things down in a manner that’s easy to understand. I didn’t realize that playing rope tug can damage their baby teeth, but it makes complete sense. Also, I think a lot of first-time owners like myself buy dog toys that are stuffed thinking that if they are sold by reputable pet shops, they must be safe. I’m glad we have you to educate us otherwise.
    Thank you so much for your explanations and guidance. You are truly creating a world with happier healthier dogs and humans in it!

    I have a 3 month old Shih Poo. He likes to bite on feet. Everyone’s feet. It doesn’t matter who but he is especially likes someone with socks on. He doesn’t seem to go for feet with shoes on. He will go for shoe strings. He is very active. We had a Yorki Crested and he Was far more mellow. We lost him at 8 years old due to congestive heart failure. So this one is a challenge due to his active nature. However he has bonded much faster. So we are learning all over again how to train a puppy. Thank you for your tips on biting. Now we will have to work on getting him to stop and stay. He runs from us when he is outside in our fenced back yard.

    These methods worked great with my puppy who was a biting machine. Now because I have used the methods of the HTTADD program he has been a complete nonbiter since he was 5 months old. It's great that now I can trust him with my young grandchildren because I'm not relying on punishment to make him behave.

    my puppy is just under 5 months old....we rescued her...so unsure of the situations she has been in....It has been 20+ yrs since we have had/trained a puppy. She likes chewing on her marrow bone, and teething ring chews...as well as her rope toy, and my chair, and shoes, and if she can get a tissue/paper towel she loves to chew on them as well but we have gotten her less access to those items. Going to get a longer rope toy and will subscribe to your pro program...we are re-learning what to do thanks to you

    Hi Michelle thanks for this video. Biting is probably one my 3 month Cavoodle pup's biggest issues. I am trying to avoid negative reactions on my part but it's a natural thing. Redirection with toys helps. But there are targets for her attention such as boxes (I've just moved house recently).
    I also need to get her used to being in my backyard without me being around as she tends to follow me everywhere. She's happy to play in the yard and leave me alone. But as soon as I leave to go inside she follows me. When I leave her there she'll cry for a bit and then go do something then come back to the door and whine some more, sometimes scratching on the screen door.
    It's a learning curve to say the least. 🙂🙄 Cheers 😘

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Peter, we don't recommend leaving a puppy in the yard alone, or even an adult dog for that matter. They can ingest something like rocksw without you knowing or eat wild flowers/mushrooms/plants that are toxic. They can start to display boredum behaviors like excessive digging, escaping, chewing decks/lawn furniture etc. Barking becomes a problemematic when the dog starts to stress bark which leads to also barking at people or cars passing by. In addition to that, theft of dogs is on the rise. People hop the fence, steal your dog and sell it online when left unattended in the yard. We teach our students to always go out with your dog, this way you can engage with them, and watch for any signs they might be getting into something they shouldn't. An unpopular topic... poop. You can tell a lot about a dog's health by their poop. If you don't go out with them, you don't know if they went or what the consistency is that could indicate sickness/illness or that they ate something that is trying to pass.

    My puppy is 13 weeks old. Thankfully he is pretty consistent with his biting cues ie why he’s biting. Sometimes it’s excitement, sometimes he just wants human interaction so tug of war works, sometimes he’s overtired or under-stimulated. I have a variety of textured toys that he plays with. Ropes for tug, rope ball with smaller gauge rope and a frayed end, Kong and other similar material toys, elk antler, raw meaty bones and a stuffed puppy that had his mom’s scent on it from when we first brought him home. He loves them all! But depending on his reason for chewing will determine which toy he chooses or which toy I redirect with. He still grabs socks, shoes, door stops, mittens/gloves, towels that are hanging etc but he is learning to “drop it” if I don’t get the “leave it” command out soon enough. I really need a treat pouch! Carrying treats in pockets is kinda gross and sometimes I forget and they get washed 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ I am trying to train my kids at the same time, which also has its challenges! I appreciate your tips, thank you!!

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you've been paying close attention! You are doing great! At 13 weeks old that little puppy brain will take some time to really remember all that you are teaching but keep up with the great work and you'll get there! Oh, and get a treat pouch! :) You can also have small bowls of treats strategically placed throughout the house where rewarding often takes place.

    Hello Michelle! My wife and I have a Chorkie, his name is Moose and he is 12 weeks. He is very sweet and lovable, but he is also our Baby shark and we've tried the yelp, it's not really working anymore, but we do redirect him with his teething bones. We also stop engagement with him when he does baby shark to hard. We put his teething bones in the freezer too. We understand that when he's got bottled up energy our fingers and toes and also our ankles are targets lol. We are always loving tips and tricks to get the baby shark in him tamed. We are always kind to our puppy we adore him and he adores us!! We just want to help our little guy sooth those sore gums

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Biting is a really common challenge for humans… but to the puppy it’s just normal! We don’t want to stop puppy biting, but we want to redirect it to the appropriate item (a chew toy, a split antler, a nylabone, etc), so kudos to you for that! It can take hundreds of redirections before the dog starts to figure out what you’d like them to do! But with patience high and expectations low, you’ll get there! Keep it up!

    Piper (a Pom) is 6.5 months. She loves mouthing and biting everything...except her toys! He wee sized Kong she only takes interest in if it's filled with treat; otherwise she ignores it. All the toys we've bought- hundreds of dollars worth- largely go ignored. The chew toys of all appropriate sizes and various textures she ignores. She lives the fabric toys that she can shake around, but those are a pain as I always need to reinforce the stitching to make sure she can't rip off or swallow. She will ignore dozens of toys for a toilet paper tube or a used tissue 😮

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog

      It sounds like a shredding activity would be good for her! You can use cardboard or, if she eats it, you can use cabbage or lettuce! Dogs don't naturally play with toys on their own, they like to play with their humans. So try some enrichment activities if you're looking for independent play.

    All good advice. My puppy is 12 weeks old. He loves to tug but will sometimes jump up and bite my hand that is holding the toy. Chewy sent me some tennis balls that he seem to like so we have been playing with those. Jack a tri colour CKCS is 14 months old now. Jack has always been a power chewer so I watched him like a hawk the first few months I had him and was constantly giving him appropriate things to chew on. Now I can sometimes get him to stop what he is chewing on without having to take the item away,( I like seeing him spit it out)and hand him an appropriate item (and lots of treats and praises). I taught Jack the word "gentle" when he gets a little mouthy with me when we are playing, but I can tell he is trying to be careful with me, but sometimes he gets over excited.

    It's very difficult not to speak when the puppy has your hand in his mouth which is like a vice. I've said "ouch" in a firm voice, (I was told to do this), and the biting gets worse. Chew toys don't work. Licky mat is a temporary fix. Kongs are ok. I've reached out to reputable trainer for help in our home setting before he starts puppy class.

      That's true - it is in human nature to react verbally to getting hurt! Biting is a really common challenge for humans… but to the puppy it’s just normal! Puppies bite for all kinds of reasons, including if they are tired, if they want your attention, if they have pent up energy, if they have to go potty or many other reasons! It can take careful observation of the schedule and the triggers to figure out what might be contributing to the behavior.
      For the best guidance as you figure out exactly what it is you can do for your puppy during this period, we'd recommend our online training course, specifically the pro-level so you can have the ongoing guidance and support of our certified trainers. We have helped countless puppy owners facing the same thing you are!

      When bringing a new puppy or dog into a home with other dogs, there will definitely be a period of adjustment. It will be important to allow each dog to have their own space at the beginning, and perhaps for all time. This will depend on the personalities of the dogs.
