Very cool project. Glasswork: get a roller. 3 1/2" disposable rollers that come in a disposable pan. It is like painting a wall with a brush vs painting a wall with a stick.
Hi ! I watched all three parts - very cool build ! ( yes, read the description as well ) Could you please tell me what was your preferred method of joining the plywood sheets to form the sides of the hull ? Thank you - Do you have a finished video / video of you launching this ?
I liked the butt joint much better. I made a couple poor scarf joints and they were much more work. I don't think the butt joint will sacrifice much strength, and I'm not going for ultra performance lightweight build, so i don't mind the extra weight. I haven't finished, so I am yet to see the results though
Can't wait to see the finished product. I am trying to design something a bit larger and build myself but am thinking I should start with something small and learn how to do this stuff before my big attempt. I will have to check out freeShip. I like your design though. Any chance of some specs\dimensions\drawings? I am thinking of going solar\electric. Learning to sail isn't another task I need right now. Good luck.
Thanks! Starting small is definitely a good idea, especially if you need to learn everything like I do. My project is much more difficult than I should have started with, but I am content with slow progress. Here is a link to the design file: drive.google.com/file/d/1dRsJsJXsFQHKwEDUqsdHcPQn1Qq0wpdb/view?usp=sharing Simple dory shape, plumb bow. 12 ft LOA, ~1 ft beam. Probably way more free board than is necessary. I would not recommend using my design for inspiration. I did some "research" online to make my design, and that was enough for me to make something.
@@readyfireaim7036 Well, I've realized that the hardest part of building your own boat is starting, so far. You got that beat by a mile. I don't recall if you showed the final design, but what sort of span are you looking at? I am thinking very small camper size enclosure for a prototype solar electric. With panels and batteries, and whatever, freeboard may not be too much.
@@jdtracy Roughly half the length, so about 4'-6' beam. I'm using the polynesian lashing technique, so the cross beams will be removable. The brackets on the sides are the lashing points for three members.
Dude fair play doing it yourself, but please protect your skin gloves are essential and plenty of resin and try a squgi when firming the matt to the ply, less chance of air bubbles and voids.
Wow Man. Amazing job! Im drawing a very similar while siling whit my family and thinking to have a sailing dinghy instead of an engine one. Can I ask you more details to compare and even plans. Want to know how much you spend and weight! Best! And want to see it sailing
Thanks! I would estimate $500 spent. I think the hulls are about 50lbs each. My design has a ton of freeboard, so the construction is pretty heavy. I drafted the hulls myself (back in highschool) so I don't have much for plans.
@@readyfireaim7036 thanks for your answer! I think its not so heavy for my project. Thanks again! This is my email. In case you find the plans and of course if you dont have problem to share them. Irs about 12ft aprox? Best. Keep in touch
I'm pretty sure i used 3mm for everything except the bulkheads. They are roughly 2ft forward and they taper to about 1ft aft; this may end up being a lot more freeboard than i'll need.
yeah totally read the description. looking to build one fairly similar to your size boat. hope to see how it turns out. I want to make a 12 foot boat with 6 foot beam. hulls are 24" top and sides with 16" bottom 8' long measuring from the transom tapering to a V shape bow
Nice! Thats almost exactly what i am planning; I choose a dory shape for ease of construction because I am a novice and this is my first boat. I hope to get it on the water by the end of this summer, with a trolling motor if nothing else.
I'm skipped to the end because watching these people handle fiberglass and epoxy bare hands and with no respiratory protection is making me break out in a rash
Kudos for bringing awareness (y) Especially the type of gloves. Normal rubber gloves you use in the kitchen will be permeated by resins in under a minute. Could have gone without then...
I don't know why your not using a tube sausage paint roller 6' long or a paint brush. But using a 2" or 3" metal putty knife is the wrong tool for doing FIBERGLASS or even Epoxy. Plus when you used the wood filler you didn't let it dry for 24 hours. Nor did you sand down the rough edges. Or wear the proper PPE to protect your skin. That Resin can cause Liver or Eye damage!
На один корпус-один лист 3х метровой фанеры,6м рейки 4*2, 4м стеклоткани, 1,5 кг эпоксидки. Перегородки необязательно,,потребуется ещё фанера". Достаточно шпангоуты из реек.

Haha! Don't worry, the next video is coming out soon, I must admit ive been a little lazy though. The hulls will be complete in the next video but it'll be a quite a while before i do more work because I will be away at university. I'll hope to get some work done during breaks though. I appreciate the interest :)

I'm NOT trying to be a dick. But I would rather listen to you talk about what you are doing than to listen to that annoying "music." I had to turn off my speakers. I could see and appreciate what you were doing. Thanks for sharing. I just don't watch these videos for the crappy "music." Muxh more informative if you would talk us thru the process and explain what you are using.

Damn you gouged it on the rocks the first time you were just testing it
Loved the camera closeups. 3:43 and 10:30 were probs my fav parts tho. Good luck kid! Wear a mask!

Did you even let your first layer of fiberglass dry for 24 hours then sand it to get the rough areas out before you added your 2nd larger layer?
No you want a chemical bond. Gotta add layers when still tacky
Dude fair play doing it yourself, but please protect your skin gloves are essential and plenty of resin and try a squgi when firming the matt to the ply, less chance of air bubbles and voids.
I see how the horizontal beams could bolt in and telescope to collapse the width for the purpose of transport or storage.

Read everything. Awesome build! Did you use 3mm for the sides and 5mm for the bottom? Also, how high are these pontoons? Thanks!

Enjoyable visuals music and effort. Wish you well in this endeavor
what materials are used in this build?
3mm okume plywood. Hawk epoxy, wood flour.
Mate, so much glass? Wouldn't epoxying the ply be enough?
Maybe, I'm being extra careful because of sharp rocks and beaching
Nope, that is the way it is done.
Hola puede acerme yegar un planito de ece caco

Keep at it man, and wear latex or nitrile gloves while handling resin. Once you get the epoxy allergy building isn't half as fun.
Kudos for bringing awareness (y) Especially the type of gloves. Normal rubber gloves you use in the kitchen will be permeated by resins in under a minute. Could have gone without then...
Yeah nitrile gloves are a must. Always better to be safe than sorry.
what materials
3mm okume olywood, epoxy, wood flour as filler, and fiberglass.

I'm reading it. Can I have a copy of your plans? 😁 please?
I designed it in freeShip, I can send you the file, or just an image of the flat plywood plates. It isn't anything very detailed though haha
