I just love this. It makes me proud to be human. Such a proudly utilitarian craft with basic equipment and I bet he didn’t get his stern passage widened at the local chandlery.
Just curious what the caulk was on the bottom and side plank seams, beautifully done with simple tools, real craftsmanship . When people build stuff like this they also look after it. Also noted that despite been made of solid timber, looks like Philippine mahogany, they still fulled framed it out, that way it can take serious abuse and hard work.
I don't know for sure but I think the traditional boat making wood would have been Teak which is weather and rot resistant, but no longer plentiful. Meranti is plentiful and more sustainable but is not rot or insect resistant and will water log if left in the water. Using wire nails and steel screws means these boats will only last a few years at best. But, they do with what they have available and the traditional skills and craftsmanship is beyond reproach.
Greetings everyone viewing, with a wooden boat like this one, after building it you can just fibreglass it both in and out, and paint it and trust me that lasting years with proper maintenance, that's how we do it in my country,if one can afford it, because fibreglass is very expensive,i don't know the length of the boat, but if is my boat,i would put a twenty Yamaha outboard motor behind it and make some fish pot and life is a dream, brilliant work,so gave you a like and subscribe, viewing from Dominica the nature island of the Caribbean,

I've watched building videos of people fabricating all kinds of wood projects with thousands of dollars of materials and hundreds of thousands of dollars in tools. All for a pretty table, bed cabinet, etc etc. You guys built a fully functioning tool / boat that people will depend on to keep them alive and working and or just daily business. All with maybe 100 dollars in tools and hardware. Looks like native mahogany. You men are absolutely the real deal.
In the USA at least, that amount of that quality hardwood would set you back a pretty penny. Go and price a 1”x12” piece of oak at Lowe’s… and then realize they usually make boats like this from much less common species of iron wood
Very nice and skilled, what wood is used? Really good. Anyway in my opinion and following traditional handcraft in wood boats in Italy metal screws with water will ruin the wood in medium long period resulting in holes and loosing structure. Better wooden thorns. Thanks.

Los agujeros en la playera no significan que son pobres, significa que le ponen mucho cloro a la ropa al lavarla.... son ricos porque tienen su fábrica de Astilleros. en mi pueblito hacíamos esas lanchas para jugar un rato con ellas y luego dejábamos que se las llevara la corriente del agua, para que gente pobre ribereña tuviese algún medio de transporte... teak is a high demand lumber, for the size this guy need it would be at least 30 years old teak and the cost would at least triple.

That finished boat was incredible. I'm curious as to why sometimes you would use nails as opposed to screws? I'm sure there is a reason.
Nails are used for components that may be removed later and replaced. Bolts / screws for more permanent fixings.
