    HI Greg, I’ve watched your video’s from the very first, to the very last. You’ve shown me how to build a work bench and what to look out for in buying an action camera. Your van conversion enticed me to buy my own van, convert into a camper van by watching step by step, rewinding, pausing and watching the same bit over again to get it right, and resulted in some great memory making times so far. Looking forward to learning more, links to help buy what’s needed, but most importantly, thank you for sharing your skills, clear instruction, and helping me learn to do things I didn’t dream I’d be able to do.

I need help from start to finish ,,, A/ B of electrics ..🧐🤭😢🤣...as I really have no idea from battery to end of job 😢🤪🤣. However with a good teacher, it’s easy to learn ... I love the vice grip wire stripper you use spotted that right away !! there is a lot of videos that are just noisy and irritating and all over the shop .. You can’t be class ... 👍👍. I can only say thanks again and please keep going .. we took the bulk head out yesterday and did two single swivel seats , so it make a plan today as we sit onboard ... I’m sure you had this day too .🤣🤪😊😊 Many thanks keep going ok 👌 ... best wishes , as we all make new plans, to get back on the road again .🚚🏁🏖🏖🚲🎸🎸🎸

    Your soldering method for joining the wires is a good one. You often see people saying you should twist the wires together and then solder them, while it is true this is the strongest method for joining wires, it is also impossible to reverse if you make a mistake or need to do work later on. Using your method you just need to apply some heat and you can separate the wires, do the repair/work and then re-join again with minimal hassle.

    Another great video from a meticulous master. One finer point and one suggestion:
    • Always remember to purchase solder for electrics, not plumbing!
    • A portable soldering station is brilliant for mobile work, under the chassis, etc. I have a Ryobi One+ (18V) 45W adjustable iron (400°F-900°F), as well as an all-digital TS100 65W adjustable iron (212°F-750°F) that's powered by any 12V-24V source. I use it with portable lithium batteries I build when out and about, or a wall wart when mains are easily available.
    I too love the Wago connectors. They've all but eliminated wire nuts in all my electrical work. Their absolutely brilliant for retrofits, or when connecting to rough wiring in new builds and renovations. While it's uncommon an uncommon occurrence, Wago connectors make it so easy to remove fixtures for repair or replacement. By the way, the Germans who make these little gems prefer "Văgō". :)
    Greg, you're looking very well. Trimmed up, clean shaven, and it appears you've been in the gym and on the bike. Good on you, mate.
    It's very kind of you to have put together the give-away. I have more kit than most, but hope that this one goes to a deserving subscriber. (Hint: The random winner should be a subscriber. Not only someone who viewed, commented and shared. However, I'm not sure if you're able to make that distinction on your side.)
    Be well and do good works!

    Brilliant video greg. Only advice I would ad as an electrician; When it comes to wiring the fuse board, shape and route the wiring to a neat form, before cutting the cable and adding connectors. This is to ensure not only is it a neat install but to also ensure the lid fits back onto the front (cable entry is often limited to designated points through the lids).

  • @suerothery4839

  • @brucefay5126

    I was taught (many years ago) that electrical solder is not to be used to make the mechanical connection between two wires, only to reduce the resistance of the joint. It seems that in tinning two wires and then laying them side-by-side and soldering, the mechanical strength is coming from the heat shrink tubing.

    • @ablackmore3
      @ablackmore3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heat shrink provides fatigue resistance to the soldered joint to wire transition. Where solder joint ends there is a "hard point" where if vibration is present the wire can fatigue and crack / break. Any connector which doesn't provide a crimp onto both wire and insulator can suffer from this. Adding heat shrink provides the required fatigue resistance. Tracing short circuits later is a pain!

  • @davewest5776
    @davewest5776 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    another way to put the heatshrink on is get your soldering iron and were the thick metal part of the iron joins the tip run that along the heatshrink shrinking the tube

    Hi Greg, your videos were recommended to me by my colleagues - I have dreamt of converting my own van for years but have no experience - I am a complete beginner in every area! They encouraged me to jump in with two feet (I've got a feeling they leaned heavily on your videos)...and I get my van this week! The electrics are my biggest fear and this video (along with how to wire your camper to be off grid and electric cable and fuse sizing) which I have watched today have been so straighforward, accessible and insightful - I feel like I have been back to school for the day! Thank you so much. Great prize on offer, but sincerely, thank you for helping to make this possible. Beth

    Great video with lots of great points.:) As an auto/domestic electrician and electronics engineer I always use soldered joints where the cable is not exposed to vibration and crimped for when it is. Its also worth adding these crimps have an orientation for crimping. For all barrel-type terminals, the kind that makes a complete circle, the crimp indentation goes to the solid side, not where the two ends meet.:) Much respect for what you are doing here, this is a fantastic channel.:)

    This week I am finally starting to convert my 2017 Mercedes Sprinter. Because In Belgium we are not allowed to do the potentially structure weakening body works - such as installing windows, fans and chairs - ourselves I am obliged to outsource it at a considerable cost. I have every intention to tackle all the other jobs myself but the electrical part remains challenging . So even these so-called basic video's are very useful to me Greg. Thanks a lot for all your efforts! Already looking forward to the one on switch-wiring ! ATB and stay healthy - Marc

    Those wago clamps are perfect. They can be used with both solid and stranded connectors. There is a smaller version, the 221 series. Those are a lot cheaper and still can handle 16a, so sufficient for most purposes. Also they are smaller.
    Those screw connection blocks i don’t recommend, especially in a moving vehicle. Screws (slightly) damage the wires sometimes and they might loosen due to vibration.
    The wago and those other ‘clamp’ connectors are more suitable and in my opinion a more solid option, especially with high currents
    For the wago’s, pay attention to the length of the stripped insulation. Should be 11mm if I remember correctly. (To prevent clamping on the insulation instead of the actual wire)
    I personally prefer soldering, but with limited soldering experiencing (and/or crappy equipment) i’d go for the wago, since that will give a good connection, while soldering varies on your experience/equipment

    Greg I can’t thank you enough. This video is just what I was looking for. I’ve just started on a van build on a Renault Master. I’m a carpenter and I was on a boat refurb and build years ago. I have been looking at all of your videos for weeks now. Your quality of work, attitude towards problem solving, incredibly easy to follow method of teaching, technical knowledge etc ( I could go on!) are just so far ahead of anyone else that you really are World Class.
    The scope of your tutorials even down to Sketchup is extraordinary. You explain the fundamentals and maths of electrics so well that it gives one the confidence that the installation is safe and fit for purpose.
    I’ve just put a dometic window in the van and am doing a temporary install of a thetford toilet with basic electrics for a trip to The Hebrides next week then when we get back the build starts in earnest. Thank you again.

    Great video as usual.
    No Ferule/Bootlace terminators? I recommend these for any clamp style connectors. Also handy when putting plugs on as they prevent stray wires and make the job much easier.
    I dislike soldering two stranded cables together in a mobile situation as it converts a small part of the stranded cable into a solid cable which can in some situations result in breakages caused by flexing. But with a long enough heatshrink to provide strain relief or mechanically securing the cable so it can't move it is fine.
    Keep up the great work 👍

    Good video Greg, hopefully that will get many started. Did you ever want to be a teacher, you would have been very good at it?
    Some thing to consider is the wires that are soldered together may fail where the solder finishes and the wire reverts to individual strands in a high vibration environment. In aircraft we would use Butt Crimps.
    And for the health and safety lot the fumes may contain lead, although in the 70's solder manufacturers perfumed the the flux so we sniffed more of those lovely lead fumes. Now they have extraction and lead-free solder although I never remember it doing me any harm :-) .

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s pretty much all lead free solder nowadays. Good ventilation is also a must.

    Thank you so much Greg for showing us van converters out here the essentials and basics of all electrical work involved in van builds. I already look forward to your next video, and to completing my own build. That kit would come in handy when starting my electrics. Cheers! (Shared on Pinterest, keep it up!)

    Brill vid Greg, its been years since I’ve done any real electrical work and still struggle removing the outer sheath. I always end up folding the cable over and gently slicing the cable until it breaks the outside. The Waco connectors are brill too. A neighbour suggested these to me and I’m really impressed with them. Keep the vids coming 😊👍 Cheers

    Greg without doubt if I need some info it's good to know you've produced the holy grail of a TH-cam channel for reference. You really do need to consider a book or perhaps a series of books (e book or Pdf downloads) based on all your hard work, it would be an absolute best seller for anyone considering van conversions.

    Yep always remember the heat shrink when you solder wires. I have done some of the best solder joins ever when I have forgotten them 😀.
    A portable butane soldering iron is really good for awkward places. Also you will have a lot more success with the environmentally unfriendly 60/40 lead based solder. The righteous solder, the lead free stuff, is much more difficult to solder with.
