    New to your channel and loving it. I edge all my seen edges with iron on wood veneer probably more time consuming. But I've struggled with getting a good edge and found this was my best opinion.

      Welcome aboard and thank you!!!
      The stacking and filling is the quickest so far for us :-)

    Thanks. Have a couple of fitted wardrobes to build & think I'll use this method over the stack & filler. I did follow that technique before but it was time consuming & I'm not convinced the finish would be noticably different to this method.

    Try doing the same thing, but using a belt sander that has a flat side, lay the sander on its side on the counter, and slide the MDF over the sandpaper, making sure the sanding is done at 90º. I sand all the edges like this.

    I like your technique for this been doing the same, I do find the horizontal holder for sanders good so you don't wobble and dig in, maybe I should just stop drinking whilst woodworking lol

      Haha yeah no drinking on the job 🤣
      I will get one of those holders soon as they look very good!!

    I’ve used this method but I do one more step with a 600grit wet and dry disc which really polishes it up,been doing it for years and never had any call backs. Also a few seconds with the 600 on the face brings it up ultra smooth. Would love you to try it and let us know what you think 👍,enjoy all your videos btw👍

      Amazing I'll make sure I do a video of this pretty soon!!
      What would you say are the upsides of using 600 last (so I can add it to the video 😁)
      Cheers maty!

      Its just a much smoother finish Ryan,not that your finish isn’t great anyway, but I can see you like doing a proper job,it’s something I learned from a woodcarver years ago,he used to go up to 2000 grit on his pieces ! Same principle as car body work finishing I suppose 😊. Anyway thanks for the reply and I’ll look forward to the video 👍

      @stevedennis352 ahh I see!
      The thing I've learnt from using an airless sprayer is that the grain raises after the first coat no matter how smooth you sand it (face of the board).
      The edges always have no problem though. 👍

      @steve.-007 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I know exactly what you mean Ryan ,the 600 between coats helps too👍

    You really need finsa hidrofugo mate, hit it with 240 or 320 straight off the saw and its paint ready! £60 for 18mm sheet ls from falcon timber in high Wycombe, and they deliver to residential workshops like ours 👍👍

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop
      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate!
      Maybe next time I have some handles ot mouldings to do I will. I have used it before but its ridiculously expensive! I get standard mdf for 25 a sheet, so if I have a large project with 20 or more sheets I can imagine the hydro can hit the pocket. But 100% on smaller jobs though! Thanks for the heads up and hope you're doing well 👍👍👍

      @thelondoncraftsman2026 £25 for standard MDF? it wasn't that long ago we could buy medite MR for less than that 😪 our costs are killing us at the moment 😔

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop
      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @bespokedfurniture yep it's an absolute rip at the moment, especially birch ply! £160 for a sheet of 18mm what is the world coming to??? 😪😪😪

    • @bespokedfurniture
      @bespokedfurniture ปีที่แล้ว

      @thelondoncraftsman2026 it's crazy! I've stopped doing sprayed internals on big jobs now, I just offer MFMDF or veneered mdf oiled, it works out cheaper for me. Birch ply is another level, I'd want to hand sort my sheets through the whole pack if I was paying that much for them!!

  • @2sanchezloco

    If I understood correctly, the method is simply to finely sand the edge of the mdf and then apply primer?
    If that's it, we all know that putting primer will straighten the grains of the mdf and that we must therefore add a step which is sanding after the primer.
    (or else I missed something in the video, my English is not perfect)

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop
      @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, so a smooth sandpaper to polish the edge, then primer, then a light sand with p240 after the primer to give you the smoothest surface possible before you add your top coats 👍

    Do you still use edgebanding for MDF or have you returned to the bulk, sand and fill method? Thanks for the great videos!

    The trick is to get a moisture resistant mdf. Will this technique work will crappy normal mdf?

      Yes all I ever use is standard mdf and it comes out perfectly every time 👍

    Out of interest and curiousity, can ironing the bear edge with a little heat, have the same effect?

    • @thelondoncraftsmanworkshop

    • @McMonkeyful

      Interesting. I'll experiment with some scrap MDF. Not convinced it would work as with the sander method you're combining the heat with the sanded particles & smoothing with the sanding pad all at the same time, not just melting the resin flat.
      Even if it did work in theory, I suspect it would take longer to transfer into the MDF. I can't see anyone else ironing, other than to attach edge banding. I would have thought others would have tried this idea.
      Does no harm to give it a try. As long as I don't destroy my iron ;p
