- Radio presenter Ken Bruce has led tributes from Oxfordshire residents to BBC Radio 2 broadcaster Steve Wright after his death aged 69.
The legendary BBC Radio 2 DJ died aged 69 on Monday - four years after his ex-wife passed away during Covid which made him 'completely shut down'.
Presenting a special episode of Wright's Sunday Love Songs show this morning, Tarbuck said the show was going on but 'without the chief'. She also read out heartfelt tributes from listeners to the much-loved DJ.
Tarbuck, 59, opened the 'Remembering Steve Wright' episode by saying: 'This is Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs but without the chief, without our genius friend.'
Her voice shaking, she added: 'So while you're getting a tissue, I think it would be lovely if you lit him a candle. I make no apologies if I get upset over the next two hours and I don't think you should either.'
Wright's final show was last Sunday, when he hosted a pre-recorded edition of his programme for Valentine's Day. Wright told listeners in his final sign-off: 'I'll be back for more love songs next Sunday, ta-da then.'

R.I.P. Steve Wright, a man who entertained his audience and did his job brilliantly.
Agree
That's a lovely tribute to Steve. He was and always will be the best of the best in radio presenters. RIP to a wonderful person who will never ever be forgotten
Steve was a friend for millions .
Thanks for everything Steve 🎙️
Yes he was
The fact that old fans & new fans alike, chased him across the stations & time slots throughout his career tells you how good & popular he was. Worked hard, gained loyalty.
Lovely tribute from the amazing Ken Bruce i dont listen to radio 2 anymore since ken left ❤
Wow
Me neither, tuned in a couple of times in a desperate search for something to listen to, and rapidly gone elsewhere.
Seems like the management can't comprehend how in countless, homes and business throughout the UK, everything stopped, breaks both official & unofficial were timed to coincide with bits and pieces in the roadshow days or Popmaster with Ken Bruce
Same here.... followed Ken to greatest hits....so hoped they'd get Steve for the 1 to 4 slot...not to be
Me 2..
@@chrisjones2224 we always put the kettle on at 10:20
It's a shame that Steve didn't join Ken and Co on Greatest Hits Radio 😢 it would have been the tonic that station so needed RIP Steve......everyone s Radio best friend XOXO
I really hoped for that too .... can you imagine GHR cloning radio 2 .... Dam Shame !
Agree
A truly ,clever , creative and progressive D.J. whose show was never boring ever .
When you listen to his voice and upbeat manner its hard to believe he has died
I know hun my teenage years his voice has always followed me god im gonna miss him
His voice was always calming and reassuring somehow. Loved his shows I will miss him.
Radio 2 will never be the same .
It's finished for me.
And for me . Radio 2 was the place for radio for years but it has slowly declined over the years .. when Wrighty went so did I .
At 44 I’m supposedly part of the demographic that Radio 2 is trying to target, yet truthfully I’ve barely tuned in since Steve was axed from his show. He’d been part of my life from my child and teen years listening to Radio 1 in the 80s and 90s. How on earth could they not think he was relevant to people of my age?
@@pipoo1 I think the demographic is the unthinking these days.
Very well said Ken
He had such a beautiful smile. Radio two has lost an amazing DJ. He was truly a one off. RIP Steve. Gone but never forgotten 😍💝
Yes he did
My father was a radio 2 listener for years and i grew up listening to swita, becoming a radio 2 listener myself the great sir terry wogan on the breakfast show, ken bruce and pop master also tracks of my years, bit of jeremy vine then steve in the afternoon regularly getting me through my work day, radio 2 has sadly went down hill and unfortunately talented presenters such as steve wright and terry wogan are very few and far between and sadly a talent tht will not be repeated. Rip steve.
A true legend
Love you, Steve. My all time favourite radio man.
i'll never EVER forget the happiness, laughs, fun, huge smiles steve wright brought to my days in my first job after id left school...radio 1 on all day with simon bates, gary davies etc....but...ive never before or since heard any dj who connected in every way the way he did with his listeners....as a 15 / 16 year old in his first job in liverpool, 1984 5...i just loved the man, his characters, jokes EVERYTHING...he honestly was the greatest 😥
Forever Steve
Steve got me through my very long days at work, 7.7 when he came on at 2pm i knew my shift was going to be fine
I couldn’t work without him
Steve and Kenny Everett best DJ’s in their style for over 50yrs! RIP.
Yes they were
RIP Steve. You will be sorely missed and always a part in many of our lives.
Amen
I can understand Steve referring to Helen as a friend despite the fact she gave him the elbow after all those years. As a business owner I have worked for individuals and companies for twenty or thirty years and then reached the end of the road with them. The folks I have worked for are acquaintances rather than friends but I know I owe them thanks for using me and I have enjoyed perks along the way working for them. Dear old Steve was a consummate broadcaster and a decent kind man. We will miss his input into our lives.
Mr Steve Wright the legend of radio. You will be solely missed as I have listened to you from your 1st time on radio 1 then over to radio 2 and the airwaves are definitely not the same without your personality and your brilliant voice and making us feel better no matter how low we felt you always put a smile on our faces and for that I thank you with all my heart : Rip Steve Wright In The Afternoon
A true King
He came, he lived his life,he has passed. Treasure the memories he has left us.As the great comedian Max Miller said of himself: " they'll never be another " a baton handed to Steve Wright. There can have been only one.Rest in Peace & blessings be with you ❤Allan&Family
Before his death i was Hopping when he left Radio 2 he'd join his friend at GHR for yet another hit show. Thanks for the Laughs you Special Man. God Bless.❤😢
Well said Ken !
🙏
My Sunday morning will never be the same
The best ever DJ,, lovely man,,rip Steve
🙏🕊🕊
Get the geese off 😂😂 ❤❤ . We all loved you Steve. Will miss you and your humour forever, nice tribute
🙏🕯🕊🕊
Strange that if you're incredibly talented AND truly care about other people you get called eccentric. I wouldn't call him eccentric, I would call him brilliant, a master at what he did and there will never be another. ❤
So why was he axed
Given all the compliments and tributes from those who axed him as well ironic isn’t it?
I always think being called eccentric is a compliment it's usually means you are unique a one off and that makes you interesting and wonderful company...and that was Steve will miss him
But the Brits are masters of eccentricity
Steve was a broadcasting genius RIP
I agree
Absolutely devastated by the news this man was a broadcasting legend, listened to this genius of a DJ all my working life, his humour, his style and inventiveness made me cry with laughter got me through some dark days.Radio will never be the same, there isn't a DJ to come near him
🙏😥😥🙏🕯🕯
Love love love Steve Wright and all his work . He was passionate and dedicated to his craft . Will miss his beautiful and intelligent voice . God bless you Steve Wright . 💛
🙏🙏🕊🕊🕊
Great tribute to a great DJ from a great DJ heartfelt true and sincere, I’ll say no more RIP👍
Amen
The Beeb hired a real cabbage with Helen Thomas.
Steve Wright was always an entertainer, our trips out on the road on tour his programs made the endless trips on motorways a pleasure. He was such a real genius talent. Of course people of no talent, usually the Management, can’t stand that. Radio is an empty place without his super positivity and humour. RIP
That era of radio is sadly almost at an end.
Remember when they said that about. Vinyl and that's all turned around 🤫
Maybe we'll have underground radio listener's 😁
Rip steve i car'nt beleive it we want hear his voice again..great tribute mr bruce xxx
🙏🕯
A beautiful soul, a true professional and gentlemen God bless him.
Amen
Still find it hard to think he’s no longer with us 😢r.i.p Steve ✌🏻
Unfortunately
In the words of Tina turner he was simply the best and will be greatly missed by many RIP steve
He was very gracious to the woman who DUMPED him shame on her
So sad wrighty was with me all through my teenage yrs I actually felt upset when his show finished at 5 I just wanted more lol R.I.P Wrighty old friend the nations friend ❤
Just really hitting home now that we will never hear his funny, warm and friendly voice again 😢💔💔
😥🙏🕊
Excellent piece, thanks Sean.
🙏🙏
God bless you Steve, amazing talent, his show was like a breath of fresh air every day, brand new. I was lucky enough to be on Ask Elvis.
Yes he was
When he started to look like Big Keith you knew the game was up. RIP Steve.
Steve Wright , was a man of his people , he was our man he was our people , no one even Ken could even compare with Steve. There are few that I think of as a friend Steve was my friend even though he didnt know me I knew him and loved him as a friend . The BBC I kmow now as my enemy , Bruce as complitict in my enemies arsenal against my friend.
Yes he was
Great DJ Steve was RIP
Steve was a legend he will be greatly missed
🕯🙏
I can't believe what the BBC did to steave wright and Brian Matthews two fantastic Djs I grew up listening to steave in the afternoons with all his characters I was so sad to hear of his passing I think we will all agree and say we will miss him amensly God bless you steave
Agree and well done for mentioning the wonderful Brian Mathews
Steve says his friend and boss wants to take him off the airways after 24 years, Steve reluctantly agrees he has had a good run at it, ??
If I was Steve’s boss I’d have given him another contract for an additional 24 years so good his shows are, I’m sorry this speaks volumes about the management at the BBC,
RIP Steve, like Queen, Elton, Rod, and QE2 you have been part of the fabric of all our lives,
From Radio 1 till he died I listened to him, he was great!
Legend
Only ever 'met' Wrighty through the radio, from the golden days of Radio 1 to his days on Radio2, and trying to work out why his death has had such an impact in me and countless others.
Is it because he was warm, funny, entertaining and part of our lives for almost 7 days a week?
Is it because is yet another unwanted reminder that the clock never stops ticking and our golden days are behind us.
Either way, RIP Wrighty thanks for the memories
🙏🕊🕯
So sad to lose steve will always be a legand along with ken bruce rip steve
I agree
He called Helen Thomas a friend, yet she stabbed him in the back by taking his show away from him.
Well I guess given the culture in the BBC its a degree of self preservation....I mean they cut him off at the legs there's no need for himself to take his head metaphorically speaking....if he'd have said the truth well we all know....bless you Steve ❤❤....listened to you every day during my working days.....Well NEVER engage with the BBC again....a d certainly won't be paying for the privilege.....
He did ?
He praised the BBC bless him.❤️
BBC use, abuse then throw away, they should be utterly ashamed of what they did to Steve.
@@maggiesamuels2937They'd given him a job for over 40 years and paid him a fortune & were continuing to do so, so yeah of course 🤦
They were also going to give him entire new radio station to play with, so great deal I'd have thought 🤷 His R2 show had got tired anyway, not a patch on the R1 days, if you won't move on you have to be pushed or helped along, he had a good run.
Lovely tribute... in every way... Ken! -- Keith
Very clever and creative man .❤

My 1st job after training for 18 months as a Radar engineer in the RAF , was at RAF Locking in 1981.
In 1T hangar where Radio 1 would be playing, Steve Wright came on who I'd not heard before. I was instantly hooked.
He would go right up close to the microphone and say
"C'mon touch your radio and feel the warmth of my sincerity " 😎
I could not believe it when BBC bosses axed his show in 2022
I cannot listen to Steve's replacement Scott Mills instead I listen to my own music collection instead.
Too young to go Steve RIP 💜
Strange this tragedy has happened in the same week BBC are dismantling Wogan house.
Nobody has mentioned this butmy belief is Steve couldn't face seeing his studio dismantled and basically destroyed.Dacades of memorabilia GONE.Did Steve died of a broken 💔?RIP Steve.
You have been my afternoons since 1981 x
Such a gift
R I P to the man who got me through my teenage depression and made me laugh again TOP BLOKE
🙏😥
I lived in Coventry for a while in the 80s and have to say never to this day have I heard a Dj presenter whatever To come close to Steve Often talked about him an entertainer of the highest calibre. I have missed hearing him for many years. And I know the Uk will be a lesser place without him RIP legend
Real one
Miss you Wrighty.
🙏🙏🕯🕯
Steve Wight, the most Nobel DJ on air. Not a bad bone in his body and despite being stabbed in the back, didn’t throw that woman under the bus! Ironically she came out, all praise for in my opinion one of the best ever. He and Ken Bruce on a par. Paul Ogrady a close second. All three treated appallingly by BBC! Shame on that organisation!
Totally agree
R. I. P Steve Wright
Steve was the best.
Yes he was
To be fair to Scott Mills no one could have replaced Steve Wright. It was an impossible job, oh how we miss him.
I agree
A sad loss
Very nice tribute!
I thought he would have jumped ship to GHR. Who knows what would have happened if he did. R.I.P Steve.
aw I love ken bruce!it's amazing how ken got back into broadcasting immediately,he even did it on television!Steve Wright's show gave so much atmosphere to the afternoon his team were with me ,every day, over all of those thousands of days, during all those mountains of jobs that I did.he was just mister radio.it just seemed effortless.i still cannot believe the news, even now!all of those memories, records, guests, conversations since early 2006.i just can't take it in.radio two used to be brilliant never ever change a winning formula.imagine axing Steve Wright,Paul o Grady and ken bruce on the basis that their shows are so brilliant and popular, about seventy years between the three of them, that we can't wait any longer to get rid of them, otherwise we could be waiting until they die because their shows will not get axed for any possible valid reason.imagine getting rid of chocolate, indian curry, beautiful women and music because they are so good, that they have gone on for so long, there is never going to be a time when the public will ever want rid of them.so what could you possibly replace them with.radio two has now been totally ruined, just like england, great britain and the world!
Agree
@@SeanMusaCarter good man!good man!what are they teaching them in these schools, colleges and universities eh?
Lovee ❤
🙏🕊
Unfortunately we have ended up with the terminally dull Stott Mills
And dreadful music
What
Scott Mills 😴
R.I.P Steve x ❤
🙏🕊🕯
He should have had that afternoon slot on radio2 until he wanted to go his self no one could replace him.
Totally
BBC Radio 2 is absolutely crap now, all the talent has gone
Completely agree.....it went downhill when the likes of Simon Mayo,Ken Bruce and of course Steve Wright were passed off to make way for younger presenters who let's face it don't match up
Wow
Well I never
Listend to radio 2 again after the changes so well done bbc2 😂 may Steve rest in peace ❤
Amen
Miss him,
🙏🙏🕯🕯
Both Ken Bruce and Steve were treated very badly by the BBC after years of loyal service. It's no wonder that radio two has lost over a million listeners. I stopped listening directly after Steve's final afternoon show and will never return..
I only listen to jez vine
No doubt he’s in their sights too!
@@jcw9539 If your over fifty the BBC doesn't want you if your a DJ or a listener after fifty you are surplus to requirements.
You'd have thought they would have learned from when they done the same to radio one. The BBC is a spent force.
Simply gutted😢
😥🕯🙏🕊
The man was a genius unlike most of the so called presenters on the radio at the moment....l mean Scott Mills for gods sake...how it that different its a bloody travesty.
Such a run of the mill 10 a penny presenter with nothing to offer...and the BBC think that this is a step in the right direction!!! Rip Steve you were the best and certainly irreplaceable.
Talented
As far as i am concerned , the BBC tributes by its corporate
employees are worthless, especially to Steve Wrights massive fan base and most of all to him! The BBC thought so much of him to brutally end his radio career in one fell swoop ! Now we get the gushing of BBC tributes to him , but along with that we will definitely still get Scott Mills, whether you like it or not ! Absolutely disgraceful!
What a big mistake to elbow Steve and the other presenters out. Nice tribute from Ken.
🙏🙏🕊🕊
The greats are all gone wouldn't listen to the new ones if you paid me .
Ok
Gone to Greatest Hits now like everyone else . Not tuned to Radio 2 since . Their loss.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Steve always used to overplay his own, amusing ,sound effects , whenever he played , Come Up & See Me, ( Make Me Smile), by Steve Harley and Cockney Reject.
I never knew what that was all about, Perhaps someone relse knows the story behind that?
Sure
He's 'raving dead'!
Helen Thomas or if you like, madam no marks !!
Helen Thomas has a lot to answer for! She clearly hasn’t got a clue how to run a radio channel. And his death is on her hands
Why say so
CRIMINAL .. to let a complete legend in his craft disappear without a trace. BBC be ASHAMED
No one will be able to equal steve wright i dont reckon.
Agree
Helen Thomas has totally screwed up RADIO 2... 😢
I agree. I only listen to Liza Tarbuck on a saturday night otherwise done with radio 2. She gave a nice tribute to Steve.
Wow
Helen thomas is no friend of anyone that listened to radio 2, shes ruined it
Wow
You are 💯 right 👍
What a shame, let's give someone else a go??? Like who????? RIP Steve the BBC are clueless
No clue
Afternoons is crap 😞
Agree
2 words!!!!!!Zoe fucking Ball!!!!!!
Huuu
All the reasons why I listened to Radio 2, Terry Wogan, Jonny Walker, Steve Wright, Mike Smith and Ken Bruce have all gone, either elsewhere or gone for good only to be replaced by non-entities that can't stimulate or entertain. They're crude, shallow and the very epitome of exclusivity dressed up as diversity and inclusion.
Jonny Walker is still on Radio 2 on a Sunday afternoon between 3pm and 5pm.
Unbelievable
Johnny Walker is also on Friday nights at 11 with the rock show
Helen broke him
He should have just gone to America, a country he loved on many holidays. He was a wealthy person he could have lived out his time, instead of a poignant Sunday program as being contemptible.
Radio 2 has gone down the pan, the only radio station who gives a pay raise to someone who loses 1 million listeners, these presenter's now really are useless RIP Steve, and keep doing what you are brilliant at Ken GHR. ps can't stand radio 2 now.
It already did
Maybe Helen Thomas could have got another job if she wanted to do something different, something worthwhile for a change, just a thought.
Possibly
Great in his day. Think he got a bit long in the tooth tbh
I hope his so called friend didn't have the edge to attend his funerl. RIP Stove
It was private
I don't know why he stayed there after they stabbed him in the back .
Love for radio
@@SeanMusaCarter he would have been welcomed with open arms at another station , easily .
Helen Thomas killed BBC Radio 2.
why
@@SeanMusaCarter You REALLY need to ask? Just listen to the wreckage, if you can bear it.
