Steve Wright was without doubt the best DJ on any radio station.

Steve Wright passing on has actually affected me in a way I really didn't expect. I remember driving long hours as a delivery driver waiting for his show to come on. Sometimes working a Saturday I would tune in and be gutted realising what day it was with no Steve. Serious Jockin on a Friday was the best like a signal that the weekend was finally here. His show ending 2 years ago was a terrible decision especially being replaced by Scott Mills of all people. R.I.P Steve. A true legend gone too soon.

In the mid 1980's I was part of a small Royal Marine ships detachment onboard HMS Brazen. We were returning to Plymouth across the Atlantic after a 6 month tour away from home in the Falkland Islands. We were about 300 hundred miles out at sea when one afternoon our small transistor radio picked up Steve Wright's radio show... It was a great moment as we knew we were almost home. I have never forgotten that moment, very emotional. Sleep well Steve, you were simply the best. RIP.

1986 - I was part of a medic team (RAF) in Dartmouth Moor waiting 14 hrs for a Hercules aircraft to make an air drop - that never happened. This guy kept us entertained whilst we froze to (almost) death. Him and Capital Radio (Chris Tarrant) , in its day was all we had.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, the BBC pander to the young listeners. What they haven't twigged is that most young people don't listen to the radio these days. They drove brilliant talent away for no reason.

I’ve read lots of comments along these lines and they are very understandable. And they may be correct. But I disagree somewhat. I’m not here to spin the bbc manifesto but what the beeb has done over the years is given birth to, or accelerated, loads of talent. We’d all like our favourite presenters and personalities to be on forever but that won’t foster new talent or help others learn from these masters. It seems trite to say it so soon after Steve’s passing but we need new presenters eventually. Personally I loved that Steve was still presenting on R2 but that I also get to hear lots of other presenters - the bbc made room for lots of them.
Meanwhile, RIP Steve, you won at life 😢

He did have his equals, really only two in fairness. The great Kenny Everett and the brilliant Terry Wogan. The only DJ remaining today I'd mention in the same breath as the three geniuses above is Ken Bruce. Back in the 80s,Steve Wright in the afternoon was compulsory listening. His zany characters and sketches were hilarious. Wrighty's ask Elvis sketches on radio 2 were beyond brilliant. I'd often be stuck in traffic, and I'd notice other motorists in fits of laughter. I knew they were listening to wrighty. If god exists,I hope he throws a few virgins in the direction of the marvellous,Steve Wright. RIP

In 1988 I got my first job, which I hated, and would listen to Steve Wright in the afternoon as I sat at a bench doing soldering, and honestly that show used to get me through it. The sound of him and the Posse stayed with me for years. Proper talent. Unlike the likes of Helen Thomas and the BBC rotten management who everybody will forget as soon as their ambition shuffles them away, we will all remember the likes of Steve Wright.

I know I’m probably one of many, I’m finding the shock of Steve’s passing is really quite hard deal with. I am 64 and spent most of my working life listening to Steve Wright in the afternoon, the 80’s shows were just unforgettably brilliant. Hard to find the words, feel profoundly sad that I will never hear his voice live again. Never met him but will miss him hugely, a unique talent who didn’t deserve to pass away at that young. To his family, all you need to know is that he was loved by millions.

I once saw Steve Wright, in a pub, sat on his own in the New Forest. I was really tempted to just go up to him say hello and thank him for the brilliant radio show that he was doing on radio one as he helped me get through several hours a day of some really crappy jobs that I did and just didn’t want to be there, but he really helped me to have a good laugh and pass the time.
I could see he looked like he was enjoying his pint . I think the place was called “The lamb “ and I’m pretty sure it was in a place called Bransgore. I decided that it would be a bit strange for him and he looked like he was enjoying his quiet time . Caught his eye once gave him a little nod, and I walked away. He probably was fed up for people coming up to him in the street and other places and came to this pub to get away from it all so made sense to me to leave him alone.
I grew up, listening to him on Radio One, and all the funny sketches, and then when he moved to radio two, a continuation of funny sketches, brilliant radio presenting he had that warm aura that relaxing way of coming through the airwaves
My mum liked listening to him as well, and I even got my son to listen to some of his funny sketches from radio two, and he laughed as well .
He seemed like a lovely person, great aura, gentle, sincere, and really funny .
I was heartbroken when he got asked from his long-term radio two show .
A true legend, who will go down as one of the great, if not the greatest in my eyes, radio presenter and idea maker in his shows . Love to you, Steve on the other side and condolences to all his fans and family. He’s left behind. ❤

Is amazin ( no g steve, loved this little quirks and games) , how just over the airwaves he could convey so much warmth , laughs and genuinity.
You only have to look at the tributes that have come from so many people from all walks of life which is a huge testimony to the incredible human being that he was . Love you Steve miss you ( Friend ) as he often used to say . RIP and really hope I can bump into you on the other side one day only next time I will say hello 🙏 And buy you a pint over there…😢

i was truly gutted to hear of Steve Wrights passing on the radio on my way home yesterday evening, his innovation and humour always made the program very special, he was like a best mate in so many ways
it seems funny to say all these years later, he was part of my childhood, wow we are aging rapidly, listening to the afternoon show, i listened to most of the DJs back then on Radio 1 but as with myself, we all change direction, jobs etc and Steve went to some station called Radio 2 (where i think all aging DJs went to die, i mean in a funny way) and i continued to listen to that Radio 1 for some time, some chap called Mules or Miles took over, oh Chris something or rather (what ever happened to him) oh yes he left and i stopped listening to Radio 1 completely (their loss)
but i was still aware of Steve on Radio 2 and sadly never got the chance to hear him again - RIP Steve we all loved you very much, you brightened our days as does that Smoyles now
the one thing that made me smoyl, smile on the news is they played Gambaccini doing his Chris Moyles impression, 'I remember when Steve Wright and I . . . ' - i just creased up OMG
who will they play when Gambo goes, perhaps Chris you can do that, 'I remember Gambo like it was yesterday

I just want to say Thanks Steve for the laughs on Radio 1 during the 1980's. I had no clue you were still around on Radio 2 until my wife mentioned it a few years ago. Thankfully I listened again for a year or so until your show ended. We should also thank the BBC for giving you the platform to keep us all entertained. RIP Steve ❤

Chris, you are a true gent, for entertaining us and being Moylsey..... and today for the first time a softy, that was lovley, listening to you talk about steve who for the most of us felt like a best mate in the afternoon.
I remember you first when i was a kid listening to Signal Radio (I live in Stoke) when i heard you later on Radio 1 as a truck driver you and the team were like my best mates joining me for the afternoon, i never once heard you be as heartbroken as you are now. Thank you so so much for entertaining us all for years and now showing us a glimpse of your softer side.
    Thankyou my friend. Wayne.

Still to this day when I meet old friends I shout in a northern Irish accent Hellooooo😂. The man was a genius. If there is an afterlife I know who I’ll be listening to on the Radio . god bless and rest your soul .❤️👍🏻

I met Steve for the first time about 15 years ago and saw him pretty much every time he'd come into New York. That was quite often because his ex wife, Cyndi, and his daughter, Lucy, lived and went to school here. I can't say enough good things about Steve. He really was a genuinely great person. Nothing was fake or for show about him. Same for Cyndi and Lucy, but i didn't know them as well as I did Steve. Last time i saw him was about 3 months before he died. He didn't look great then. You could see he had health problems, but was still his same old upbeat self. RIP Steve.

I never really viewed him as a typical celebrity or someone in the limelight and he always seemed to be a genuine bloke to me. When you’ve spent so many years listening to him in the afternoon, it was almost like you’d tune in to be uplifted. Thanks for providing that comfort blanket Steve and may you rest in peace. Legend!

The BBC used to be home to many greats, it used to be home to us too, you could always rely on the BBC for great content, great people and great media (or at least we thought!). Those old enough to remember the great stuff and people at the BBC feel as though our home is broken now, the BBC are desperately scrambling around trying to save itself, but they shot themselves in the foot when they got rid of all the greats, and I'm including you in this too Chris Moyles, but Ken Bruce and Steve Wright were two of my favourites, since ditched. I grew up listening to Steve Wright on Radio 1 working in a garage, I was grown up listening to Steve Wright on Radio 2 and now in my 50's it scares me to think of all the greats now gone, all the people who influenced me, all the people who I admired, and all the people who I listened to through the fab and not so fab times. Steve was a credit to his profession, a credit to his fans and a credit to what a great human being should be. Sadly missed.

A true perfectionist at his job '' A lot of people could learn so much by Steve Wrights work and life ethics. Sadly, gone but His voice will resonate through my brain until my end day. Thank you Steve for your positive, funny, sometimes serious radio shows you made my days and sometimes boring workload go so fast while chuckling away listening to you. Oh, and on a footnote, I still got an email address dating back from late 1990's named after one of his caricatures ''Ravingnutter'' which I give out to people from time to time, so funny seeing the look on their faces when I say Ravingnutter . Shall be missed, thoughts go out to his family and friends. Thank you Steve.

As you get older, you begin to see your life becoming less and less relevant, because each year brings new heartache as you notice the people you grew up with, friends, relatives and of course celebrities becoming frail and in some cases they pass away. This is part of all our lives sadly, it’s just the way things are.
Steve Wright was a huge part of my younger self and to know he has gone, well it saddens me greatly. As a young working man in the 80’s, I listened to Steve every day in the factory where I did my apprenticeship. I remember how we would all be in hysterics listening to him and his crew take on the many zany characters that brought tears of laughter to my eyes so often. Then in later years, his afternoon show on BBC2, a ‘slightly’ more matured Steve, but with all the warmth and humour intact. Just a wonderful guy in every sense.
I know he was a bit of a tortured soul, as are many who open their hearts so freely and who give so much of themselves to others. I hope he has found peace now, and if there is a god, a heaven, I know Steve will be playing all his favourite hits there for eternity.
    God bless you Steve Wright.
