- BBBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine was close to tears on BBC Radio 2 today following the announcement that Steve Wright has died aged 69. The beloved DJ presented programmes for BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 for more than four decades.
Steve's family confirmed his death "with deep sorrow and profound regret" in a statement today. The sad news was included in the 5pm bulletin on BBC Radio 2 today, with presenter Sara sounding emotional as she responded.
She said: "It's really hard to know what to say about the news of Steve Wright's passing, except that we are all absolutely devastated and shocked and blind-sided by this news. Steve was an extraordinary broadcaster and a really, really kind person.

I remember hearing his announcement when radio 2 dumped him and feeling so shocked that Radio 2 would even think that anybody could possibly replace him. What on earth were they thinking about? Steve was such a talent, he connected us to our past. We took him for granted until he wasn't there anymore and now he's gone. RIP Steve ❤
He was irreplaceable
Brilliant well said friend 😢
I remember when he came back to do an afternoon show as a one-off on a Bank Holiday last year, filling in for his replacement, Scott Mills. My god, he was SO good. It made me properly realise for the first time what I'd always taken for granted. He sounded like he enjoyed it so much and twitter went wild with calls to 'bring back Steve'. He was the best.
An absolute master of his craft, taken too soon. RIP Steve you brought so much joy to so many people for so many years.
Definitely
Couldn't agree more
Hear-hear. You will be missed very much, Steve.
As any teenager in the 80s like myself will agree, Steve was our DJ. Timeless in his presentation and love for his job of making us laugh, smile or just bring a little joy to everyone who listened to his show. Through 40 years of my life he was always there adding a little sparkle to every day. Rest in peace Steve, you will be a hard act to follow.
When radio was still radio
Totally shocking. After listening to your show for 30yrs and now no more is going to feel strange. Rest in eternal peace Steve and thanks for brightening up my days.
God Bless Steve, it really feels like we've lost a friend
Steve Wright was Radio 2. No doubt. He had the best voice, the best show and the most fun. I listened to the afternoon show daily and Sunday morning wasn't Sunday morning without Love Songs. I emigrated 15 years ago yet every Sunday morning we still listen to Love Songs via the net or Spotify. I am deeply saddened. I loved the guy.....
Mr Angry, Sid the Manager, the Dude, The Newsagent (‘scuse me !), the Professor, Elvis, and of course “…get the geese off..” etc……. We’ll never hear the like again. I’ll never forget the strangely haunting air to the music he ended his show with, it was especially sad on a Friday, only because we wouldn’t hear him again until Monday. He kept me and my office entertained every afternoon during the 80’s , so that’s a real mark of the number of years he entertained us all so magnificently. RIP Steve.
I agree
I think the end music was lifted from a Glen Cambell track, two songs for me that Steve played mainly on a Friday were ‘Jessie and Babylon will always remind me of him and those Friday afternoons 😢
All the truckers in the country are gutted he's got us through are journeys every day for years won't be the same without Steve 😔
he sure did
He had a lovely voice for radio, and helped millions in there dark days.not something you can say today
RIP Steve, loved your shows from the 80’s to present day. You will be sadly missed.
I have listened to Steve for many many years, from radio 1 then radio 2, he kept me going every afternoon, what a talent he had, just so funny, know we have some younger boring chap, I don't listen anymore, it's not the same, the BBC should never have removed him, what a sad loss, will miss him so much, thank you Steve for all the fantastic years😢😢
Real talent
Steve wright...What can i say..if you had a bad bad day at work, Driving home pissed off, listen to wrighty by the time you get home you are happy..Some went to the pub to drown their sorrows before facing their family.
Me i'd listen to Mr Wright and go home happy and sober!
A true music fan and a radio friend from 16 to nearly 60!……God speed Steve.
Spent the 80s working in a garage and Steve’s show was the best for every afternoon am so privileged to have had the pleasure to enjoy his wonderful hilarious shows RIP 😢😢😢🌸🌺💐
Building site for me in the 80s. Steve Wright in the afternoon, highlight of the day, every day.
I worked in a huge warehouse with a great group of mates, and had the radio playing on the speakers throughout the building and Steve's show was the best. One day licensing people turned up and the company didn't have a licence and got a fine. Boss said no more radio and there was almost a mutiny. Stopped doing overtime, worked to rule and as lowed down as much as we dare. Boss got the message. Got a licence, radio came back on and happy days. It was only a warehouse job but some of the best years of my life 100 of us in that warehouse and we were all good mates with one another and with the office staff as well, a great company and happy times. Rip Steve Wright.
Gave up with radio 2 years ago apart from Steve, Bob Harris and Johnny Walker.
Even though radio 1 has about 5 stations they still try to force us to listen to autotuned computer generated rubbish muzac.
They should have learnt a lesson when they kicked out Ken Bruce...rant over (for now)
As my mum used to say.... "give me flowers when I'm alive, not when I'm dead".
Such a genuine, heartfelt tribute from another first class broadcaster. I love Jeremy Vine and haven't missed a show in 6 years; the same for Steve Wright in the afternoon and Sunday love songs - the level of grief I'm feeling is very deep. R.I.P. dear friend xx
Truly sorry 😞 🕊🙏
It's strange how I feel so sad for the loss of someone I never met. Yet he was a part of my life, like a true friend, for so long. RIP Steve......
I totally agree with your comment just how I feel
Jeremy Vine is a journalist, not a DJ. Hardly fair to compare the two of them. RIP Steve, we'll never see your like again, thanks for the memories.
No one's comparing them
Journalists should read the news only not be DJs. Proper DJs like Steve Wright should be only be air, they are music radio people
Best DJ I heard listened to him from 80s he literally was a friend on the radio loved his oldies slot at 3 pm put me onto music I wouldn't know about absolutely gutted he's passed Steve was the best ever RIP old friend
His was the first show I would always tune into when returning to the uk through the 90s and 2000s. My favourite show during the 80s on Radio 1. Thank you Steve for entering our home, our car, our workplace and brightening them all up with your humour, characters, music, chat and ‘all the stuff’. Listening to one of these TH-cam segments, I came across the Showbiz Gossip feature. And it reminded me of another thing he was good at: the background music. Does anyone know what that funky music is Steve used for Showbiz Gossip? RIP Steve Wright. I’ve still got your single with the Afternoon boys, I’m Alright. Thanks to you, we’re alright.
Lovely tribute for a lovely man a great loss rip Steve 😢
Totally agree
Will never tire of this irreplaceable man's voice. Steve was as life affirming and creative as the incredibly creative music that illuminated the 80s and 90s 🎧❤🎶 A beautiful eulogy Jeremy....
🙏😥yes he was
This is the first time I’ve ever heard JV ACTUALLY say something decent about someone, especially someone like steve was, we’ve all lost a great friend of our working day. RIP STEVE 🙏🙏
For real
And they gave us Scott Mills ffs most boring presenter kicking around
Your not wrong should be called Sterile Scott
I would have preferred Gary Davis to replace Steve. It’s like what they did to Simon Mayo with his drive time slot , his show was brilliant too with the confessions slot , nearly crashed the car laughing.
painful to listen to.
@@stuartkeen5234 always thought Gary Davis was a poser back in the day but would have him any day now to replace Steve W in the afternoon, hes way above the standard of today's tedious non entities
Can send a glass eye to sleep can mills....RIP Steve!
Steve I'm gutted, you are a legend. Jeremy no time for you x
That wasnt necessary was it?
He was a absolutely fantastic DJ been listening to him for years, always brightened my day. Rip Steve wright
A legend
You were so loved Steve. I hope you knew how much.
Sleep very tight❤
What a fabulous tribute
Haven’t listened to Radio 2 since they sacked off Steve, disgusting behaviour from the bbc. They killed him.
R. I. P Steve had many many happy hours listening on my tractor, some great laughs over the years...... God bless and Thank you 😥
He was incredible
We need Gary Davis to replace Scott
He is a massive miss on our radios never to be replaced
You are blessed to have known him as a listener Steve bought me joy and can't stop crying god bless you
😥🙏🕊🕯
BBC Radio lost a lot of listeners when they screwed about with the format that people loved, there was Simon Mayo, Ken Bruce, and then moving Steve Wright who was THE best that BBC had. I was hoping that Steve would join Greatest Hits Radio with Ken and Simon, but sadly we will no longer hear our friend Steve Wright on the radio, but he will always be in our hearts!
Yes they did
Me too! I was hoping he'd show up on either Boom after David Hamiltons 12-2 slot or GHR ❤
He created a world that drew you in , I doubt we will see his like again
Steve was THE BEST.. end of, irreplaceable
Yes he was
Sunday mornings have gone, loved you steve wright x
My top top choice of best dj ever. I’m gutted 💔💔
🕯🕊🙏😥
Just like Jeremy to ride on the wave of talent hoping it'll carry him somewhere, rip Mr angry❤
Really?
If he hadn’t been axed he would still be here. BBC radio shame on you. You got it so so wrong
Rememberin. Without the G. RIP Steve you’ll be sorely missed 😢😢
I hope you are in a better place Steve. Listened to you from Mr. Angry days till now. Sundays will never be the same. And to the bosses at Radio 2. Shame on you.
Thank you Steve I was a high mileage driver and without you the old woman Sid the manager gervais all the others including the geese factoids etc I couldn’t have done it without you ….you were always our best friend we never met and we will miss you dearly r I p
Rip Steve loved hearing your voice on the radio
🙏🕊🕯
Removed Steve Wright and kept Jeremy poxy vine. You couldn’t make it up.
For real,?
Jeremy is what Americans call a grifter
@@michaeladams2644 Either way the bloke is an oxygen thief.
Absolutely agree. He is a disingenuous fraud, nothing that comes out of his mouth has real meaning, he doesn’t believe in anything except furthering himself. Get him off the BBC
I honestly can't stand the man. So self indulgent. I switch stations when he comes on because I find his slot incredibly boring and he makes everything about him.
Loved steve as funny as hell 🏴🇬🇧
Brilliant words
Loved listening to STW in the afternoon back in the 80s sleep well my dear friend x
Is there a cause and effect here? Stripping all Steve had built over his career for no reason, then possible heart attack? Literally heart ache😟.
Awww Jeremy that was truly heart felt and so moving. Thank you for those lovely words and for the insight into Steve's studio. RIP Steve 😢
End of an era of fantastic radio.😔
Lets be Honest shall we ? Helen Thomas has completely Ruined Radio 2 , It was a Station for the Adults to listen too , We were SO LUCKY to have this Great Station to listen too . We heard the Station started to drop in Popularity , First Paul Ogrady , then Steve Wright ! . Now this Poor Chap has died ,He did Not deserve the rough treatment Ms Thomas metted out . Happy Now are we Helen Thomas !
Steve you were and still are legend so so sadly mist . R.I.P ❤❤ condolences to your family ❤ love always .❤❤❤❤
Amen
Part of my life 😞
The impressionist that did Jeremy Vine’s character was more like Vine than Vine. It was always a laugh.
Ask yourself, who is there that can make you actually laugh aloud in the same way as Steve Wright could do? I honestly can’t think of anyone. RIP Steve and thanks for decades of smiles.
Thank you Jeremy, that must have been hard to do. Listened to Steve everyday on the roads all over the country, both on radio1 and then on radio2. RIP Steve Wright.
Breaking 💔🕊🙏
Thanks JV ❤ Your turn to be the best sir
Personaly i think that Vine was one of the first people forced onto listeners after the ousting of the most listened to Jimmy Young. I don't care what Vine say's, he's part of the rot.
With you there. Vine is vomit material.
The anger here.. 😂😂🙌🙌
@@SeanMusaCarter Seconded, thirded or whatever. Vine appears on my radio or tv, it's off, straight away! Loathsome creature. Restin' in Peace now, Steve Wright, no G.
Greatest DJ ever
Stamped
I remember where i was when i first hear him he was replacing somebody of Friday afternoons and we thought this sound like a great guy we listened through Radio 1 and 2 right up to the last show (what was radio 2 thinking) we will miss you Steve as we still do with Terry god bless
As far back as i can remember mum and dad listening to wrighty then when i started working listening to his shows back in radio1 days but I was sad when Steve left radio 2 but thought he semi retired by choice can't believe radio 2's bosses cut him that's insane!!, I used to listen to Chris Evans in the morning then it would be Ken Bruce then Jeremy vine talky bit then Steve Wright I listened every day at work and still do Monday to Friday so since last year you have the changes like zoe ball took over after Chris Evans departed r2 then which was not a bad replacement ,then Steve was replaced eventually by Scott Mills what a shite choice I try to listen still but find it so drab then the great Ken Bruce left, then like when Steve left felt gutted to be replaced by Vernon kay which is OK but don't hold a light nowhere near Ken the only one left that is a warm reminder of the way it was is Jeremy Vine but I can't believe that they thought in there infinite fx#king wisdom that taking Steve off air and replacing him with Scott Mills was a good move Twats well this goes to prove you give muppets power and they run with it and destroy what was a Fab line up from 8am when I started work till 4pm when I finished I would always leave radio on if I finished early when or had time off to listen to Steve he was a radio god and felt like he was one of the boys at work and since last year listened even more if Steve was on a Saturday or his Sunday love song slot just feel so gutted ,,he has always been there he will be missed hugely
RIP Steve😢
A true legend
RIP Steve
I texted Jeremy to say don’t apologize your only human.
Ohh
Scott mills is soooo boring. Should of stayed at radio one.😖
I will never listen to radio 2 again.
Fairm play to Jeremy, he can be annoying but what a fabulous tribute to a radio legend.
Woww
What Helen Thomas done was the biggest own goal in the history of the BBC. Steve wright made radio 2. Helen do the the right thing and resigned before you do more damage
True
All the Shearings Holidays drivers listened intently to Steve we laughed until we cried. I don't know how the Radio 2 manages sleep at night after they stopped his show.Sleep well Wrighty.😢
Real talent
Lovely Tribute Jeremy Vine 👏
Brilliant DJ.
Well said Jeremy
RIP Steve you will be sadly missed ❤
J.Vile.. nuff said. Not fit to even sweep out Steve's studio!
Ahh come on man, he was really emotional here and singing Steve's praises, as he should of course¡
Look you can’t compare they are/were excellent at their job!
Jeremy Vine should be Jeremy Vile. And his name shouldn't be in the same sentence as Steve Wright.
Jeremy Vine , boo 👎 he doesn't even deserve to talk about Steve . He was a legend , and Vine is an insincere fraud 😮
Why so angry
@@SeanMusaCarter not angry at all 😄
My 1st job after training for 18 months as a Radar engineer in the RAF , was at RAF Locking in 1981.
In 1T hangar where Radio 1 would be playing, Steve Wright came on who I'd not heard before. I was instantly hooked.
He would go right up close to the microphone and say
"C'mon touch your radio and feel the warmth of my sincerity " 💜
All the possie and characters like
Sid the Manager
Linda Lust
Gervais the hairdresser
Hopeless Weather girl
Damian the Social Worker
The Pub singer would keep us entertained.
It was all very silly but definitely made the working afternoon pass quicker !!
I could not believe it when they axed his show in 2022
I cannot listen to Mills instead I listen to my own music collection on Spotify now.
Too young to go Steve RIP 💜
Steve wright said Jeremy vine London has
The March deadline
2:30
Blood is on Helen Thomas hands .. live with it
Vine is less than the slime on the bottom of a shoe that Steve walked through in a very muddy winters walk. He has all the gravitas of a great cover on a shit product. Steve was gold plated rolls Royce worderfulness and marked our lives with his life his love and his laughs ....fuck the BBC.
Nauseating, you were silent when he was sacked
For real
Friend and boss helen Thomas,i dont think so!!,she has not got a clue about what listeners wanted and totally shows no respect for long serving presenters, even ken was booted out, totally unbelievable!!!
As usual mr vine it’s not about you! Steve was simply in a different league and simply engaging and funny,🙏will be missed massively
Should never have been removed from the slot!!He'd still be alive without a doubt 😢
Wow
All this "stepping down for youth" is blatant age discrimination when many of us still consider ourselves to be quite youthful.
The mlck jagger thing... hilarious 😂
@russellwilson6388. Apparently - and I don’t know if it’s true, but the real Mick Jagger heard himself on Steve Wright’s show being brilliantly mimicked by Phil Cornwell. Real Mick said to his manager/P.A. that he “didn’t remember doing that show”! How good is Phil Cornwell. Have you seen “Stellar Street” where Mick and Keith (Phil and John Sessions RIP) run a corner shop? Hilarious. Stay safe and well.
@@markmiwurdz2248 I didn't know that... cheers👌
Jeremy being false again, Wednesday evening out partying, Jeremy you will never be respected or ever as loved as Steve Wright
Surely we cant live without his wedding updates? To a man!
It's a HUGE shame that the likes of the BBC and THAT OBTUSE MINDED WOMAN (driven by a 'Certain agenda') kicked him out from doing what he loved and what we, the masses, so dearly loved him doing. May you rest in peace, with MANY laughs, giggles, jokes and much merriment 'Wrighty', YOU WERE 'A LINEMAN FOR OUR COUNTRY' 🎤 (End of show music) - you will ALWAYS be in our minds and hearts 👌👍👍
😎🇬🇧
Wow
Thanks Jeremy for your tribute to Steve . We all love so much and Steve IS going to be miss so so much by so very many
Definitely
I e not listened to the DJ after Jeremy anymore, used to love Steve. That new guy is pants, can't remember his name. I only listen to Vernon and Jeremy.
Steve was/ is a legend with oodles of talent, wit and wisdom. Vine is a talentless Walloper not fit to utter Steve’s name.
Steve Deserves at the Least Respectful Comments as he made the working day for a few generations (mums, dads etc) a bit lighter.Millnells/Gen Z should Respect that too ;)
Completely agree, his family could Read these too, that is Horrible to think how it might upset them
Vines hypocrite bosses sacked this brilliant DJ from his treasured afternoon show but then spend the whole week saying how great he was after his death
Steve Wright was radio..and Ken Bruce there is drivel now talking over songs.
Very self indulgent Jeremy
Bollocks. They were friends
I am utterly horrified at these comments a person has just died
People are angry
He was a talented Dj who made us laugh and made the days fun when working etc he will be missed
Lovely Stevie Wright... left the building much to early... love you man xxx
Jeremy VILE
Jeremy Vine is a worm.
Stop these nasty comments about other radio presenters.
They are all good in their own RIGHT, but STEVE WRIGHT was the master of radio art.
Steve Wright left the building far too early.
RIP MY RADIO FRIEND XX
Sid the Manager
Keith Richards
Mick Jagger
Steve's interactions with these characters and more 😂
Woke BBC for you hopefully they'll close down soon I doubt
He was up there with Kenny Everett.
Indeed
Paul o grady got the push from radio 2 and he departed the planet weeks later. Now its happend to our mate steve. These funny guys the job keeps em on the planet keep us entertained. The job taken away from them BAH they have nothing left to live for. Radio is their life and now they taken away from us. You gotta start lookin after folks.
