  • House Democrats use video footage of the Capitol attack to make a powerful case against Donald Trump, Republican Senators look for excuses to acquit, and the Republican Party has been losing voters since January. Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer discuss the latest on the impeachment trial in the Senate, including the new footage from January 6th, Bill Cassidy's defection, and what the trial means about our politics. Then, they break down the future of the GOP and the MAGA movement.

    Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

    It’s been almost twenty years since Sep. 11, 2001. On that day, 44 Americans made the ultimate sacrifice: the passengers on United Flight 93 gave their lives to bring down that plane and prevent it from reaching its intended target, the US Capitol. 44 patriots died defending that building, the people in it, and all that it represents. Twenty years later, 44 cowards in the US Senate sacrificed nothing - except their dignity, their legacy and any right to call themselves patriots. Rather than defend the Capitol, they voted to defend the people who attacked the Capitol, and to prevent a trial of the man who incited that attack. How far we have fallen in twenty years.

      A personal note: I had to fly to NYC for work, and my secretary booked me on Flight 93, but it left at 6:30 am, and I didn’t want to get up that early. So I had her switch me to a later flight that left at 10:00 am. That’s the only reason I didn’t die that day.

    I can relate. I didn’t want to watch the trial because I know he’ll be acquitted, but listening to Raskin ask if they’re willing to bet their lives, their family’s lives, and the lives of all the governors of each state, on betting that the former president won’t repeat this awful behavior. Powerful stuff.
    They’ve done a great job presenting the evidence.

    • @pakde8002

      Censure is an option after conviction rather than removal if I remember correctly. Censure within a party for a party member is possible without the impeachment process, otherwise I suppose a two thirds vote in either respective body could also do the job if it's a member of Congress.

    What Caster said about the hearsay exception is technically true. However it is completely irrelevant, because rules of evidence don't apply here. Virtually everything said at this 'trial' would be considered hearsay in an actual court. Which is fine, because this is not a trial court. I'm just really not sure why he's talking about the present-sense impression exception to hearsay when they aren't using the rules of evidence in the first place. It's a senate impeachment trial, not an evidence course in law school.

    • @pakde8002
      @pakde8002 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's typical of the Republicans to try to apply rules of a judiciary hearing to the impeachment process. They did the same in the first impeachment. It's disingenuous but sounds good to the uninformed people who make up their constituents.

    There is a chance that we can convict Trump if the 15 GOP who skipped out on today's Senate hearing don't vote. The Dems can hold a vote that they don't get to vote. If we can get one more GOP to vote to convict, we will have 57/85 = 67, as it stands 56/85 =65.8 so it's not a clean 66%.

    The house team did an historic job. Faced with known corruption and, thus, low likelihood of meeting the goal of 67 votes to convict, they proceeded with superb work, not the least bit dispirited, because they knew the immeasurable value of communicating the truth. Their exceptional work is an eternal flower: it will continue to bloom as we collectively continue to seek information, justice, solutions, healing, and eventually solid, lasting progress. Bipartisanship has already begun to revitalize in the hearts and minds of the people, thought not yet evident in the vote numbers and behaviors of certain GOP lawmakers.
    It is the people and country that matter, so.... Thanks to every open mind and especially to the GOP of both the House and the Senate who had the courage and integrity to stand by our Constitution, and their oaths.

      The min wage increase doesn't happen overnight. It would increase yearly till it reaches $15. We've had min wage increases before. It doesn't crash the economy. That's GOP BS that exasperates income inequality and left the economy in recessions after Reagan, and Bush, and Trump.

    Without Trump on the ballot, if we can keep up the same enthusiasm and hard work that we brought to the 2020 election, how big of a majority will we be able to get? I think that this is a turning point that will allow Democrats to have a super majority that will enable even more progressive policies if we can get SOME BIG things done. I would like to get to the point that ALL Democrats do not make being "bi-partisan" a goal. It is a worthless goal as it is self-defeating. To Republicans, being bi-partisan means letting them have their way.
