  • The MAGA vs. Mitch McConnell battle heats up with Trump’s return to public life, Joe Biden and progressives debate how much student debt to cancel, and Texas suffers from freezing storms and rolling blackouts while Ted Cruz jets off to Cancun. Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer discuss Donald Trump calling into Hannity after Rush Limbaugh's death. Then, they break down President Biden's CNN Town Hall. Last, they discuss the climate crisis in Texas, including the Green New Deal, wind energy conspiracies and how we can fix energy grid problems.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

Has any one considered cancelling interest on federal student loans permanently if cancellation can’t happen? Interest makes up for a huge portion of most peoples loans and this last interest free year has been extremely helpful to people who were able to continue paying.

this! I believe that's what's really holding people back, yes the loans are high but the interest??? you might as well not pay the loans at all because it feels like you'll never finish paying off your loans if the interest just keeps adding up. Cancel interest if canceling student loan debt isn't on the table, I feel like that's fair.

Regarding student loans, has anyone proposed eliminating interest on the loans instead? As someone with $220k still pending in student loans, 10k or 50k doesn't really change things much. But eliminating interest, or bringing the interest down to something really low like 1% would really help. That way, we're still responsible for paying off what we borrowed without interest snowballing.

    2. If the goal here is to make tuition free long-term, better to align your student loan debt relief with how you plan to manage future cost.

Look, why do we have to discuss canceling "student Loan Debt"? The root cause of the cumulative student loan debt is the "Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act" past in 2005 which was voted for by Biden when he was a senator. This act exempted government backed student loans from being included in bankruptcy filings which is why middle age and younger people have had to carry this debt damaging their credit ratings and limiting their employment prospects for years. This is why we have to engage in conversations about cancelling "Student Loan Debt".

The President's student loan comments sadly just reveal the ignorance of the upper class when it comes to making policy for the "rest of us." His kids went to "a Harvard and a Yale," but did they need loans? Did they pay outright? Have a legacy? If you've taken out loans, whether that be at "a Harvard, or a Yale" or a College of the Canyons, you've borrowed money that you (presumably) didn't already have and needed to pursue an education. I've bussed tables with a Columbia med student because they knew they needed to pay their loans while in school or they'd never have hope of paying them. Dan's comparison to the bullshit behind the "homes they can afford" argument is very applicable. There is absolutely zero guarantee you'll earn an income after school that will allow you to pay back your student loans (even in an essential field), but having worked in financial aid, thaaaaat isn't advertised or earnestly discussed when students are clicking through the student loan "counseling" slideshow. Having been through it, and ushered others into it, the student loan game, be it federal or private, is predatory. As a young person, immigrant, or parent who wants the best for their kid, you're sold a loan, promised a dream, and left with a nightmare.

Someone needs to show Biden the current numbers on what it costs to go to school now. One has to be very well off indeed to get through college with only $10,000 worth of loans. It would be only a small percentage of my debt, and I've been paying on it for 16 years.

The cost of college should be addressed-not student loan debt. I went to a state school that I could afford, worked full time and had a credit load of over 15 credits each semester. I graduated debt free. So, now I’ll be penalized and will pay for people who didn’t think about graduating (or not graduating) with student loan debt. No, thanks! OR I can go back to school and get $50K paid by taxpayers. OR we can try to make up for racist federal housing policy by wiping all school loan debt for minorities ONLY regardless of whether they graduated or not. Sick of the entitled angle of cancelling student loan debt. Her face at 16:17. She went to a private university. Her eyebrows gave it away when President Biden brought up private vs. state. That was her choice. So, while you’re being braggadocious about going to a private university, you can pay the entire bill for that private university.
