    • @Arkryal

That's not what "squatter's rights" mean. It is just a colloquialism for "Adverse Possession" which, depending on jurisdiction takes 10-25 years and a lot of very specific criteria needs to be met. This is "Hostile Tenancy" (though it may be called different things in different jurisdictions, "Delinquent Tenancy" is common... there are a multitude of terms for the same thing).
What he was attempting was to establish temporary residency, meaning after a period (7 days in OP's jurisdiction, apparently), he would need to be legally served an eviction. That would take 30 days minimum, and he could drag it out for 90 days beyond that in many cases. So 4 months of free rent is the most he could have hoped for. If this was during the Covid eviction moratorium or if the courts were still backed up from that, it could have taken even longer, but that depends on a lot of factors not included in the post. But it's a douche-bag move, especially since he has the money to get his family an apartment.
Sorry if that's pedantic, a lot of people mention "Squatter's Rights" in this context, when it's actually something very different. I'm just clarifying because it makes a big difference in how the issue is resolved.
Actual "Squatter's Rights" (Adverse Possession) can be exploited, but it's extremely difficult to do so, and it does serve a useful purpose. It's not as crazy as it sounds.
Adverse possession requires you to occupy a residence in an "Open and Notorious" manner (you can't hide the fact that you're there), and you have to remain there for a very long time, uncontested by the owner. In the US, Texas is the shortest term, 10 years of continued residency. Most states are much longer than that. You can't pay rent in this time as any part of a lease etc, it has to be "hostile occupancy". If the owner contests the occupancy at any time in that term, the claim is immediately nullified. There are a lot of other hoops to jump through. It's very hard to exploit squatter's rights.
As for why squatter's rights are "useful", and not such a bad idea, I like to explain with an example. Imagine your great, great, great grandfather was in the California Gold Rush. He had a claim of land. He owned the land. But there was no gold on his claim, so he packed up his shit and went back east, abandoning the claim. He still owned it, but never did anything with it. The Title in theory is conveyed down through the generations, and now that useless plot of land is half of Downtown San Fransisco, valued in the tend of billions, conservatively.
Would you have claim to it now, or would the people who live there, have built homes (purchased in good faith with clear title) have a stronger claim? Legally they would. The people that came before them may have been squatters on your ancestor's land, but as it was abandoned, and the claim to the land was never defended over decades, any rights from the original owner were nullified.
What this guy is doing is more akin to a deadbeat rental tenant. You're a landlord and you rent to some meth head who simply refuses to leave or pay rent. You can get them out of there, but the legal process takes time. The deadbeats drag out that process for as long as they can to stay where they aren;t wanted. It's not exactly the same as squatting, and there are different legal remedies in such a situation.

Because once they have kids, they try to act like they're more important than you. And they try to use their kid as an excuse. Why they're lying because they think you won't say anything. Basically, bad parents act like this.

It goes both ways though also. My husband (we have 2 kids) recently got broken up with by one of his good mates (child free) because he never went to many parties and things even though my husband went out with them as much as he could. my husband even hung out with them when I was having a miscarriage because it was a planned event. This couple though kept pulling the 'use a babysitter' card meanwhile they often brought their dogs along like get a dog sitter 😂 the thing is with people with kids, we know what its like to be cf because we were single before haha but cf people have no idea. I have friends who are cf but they have nieces and nephews and common sense so our relationship is fine.

I've got a friend who has a young child and we don't hang out much anymore just because its hard to accommodate each other's lifestyles. I don't wanna come over to her place because she's got two large barking uncontrollable dogs that she never trained before she had kids and she can't bring her kid over to my place for long if at all because the dogs have to be kenneled while she's gone because they live in an apartment, so they can't just go out and pee. It definitely true that it's more convenient for her if I visit her, but it just isn't PLEASANT for me to visit at her place. And since I have limited free time out of work, why would I choose to spend it being miserable, especially when her poor life management is the reason its miserable? I love her, but paths diverge and people have to move in different directions sometimes.

I have a sweet older lady family friend who's like a grandmother to everyone. She wasn't able to live in her three story house for roughly 2 years due to her husband passing and being taken care of since she's legally blind (80%). She loves to work and stays very, she's a very classic Christian life style living woman in a good way. Anyway, she invited her houseworker she's known for some years to live in her house until they can get situated with moving and finding a home. Well, fast forwards to many months of her family living there and it seems they for some reason, got the bright idea that the sweet grandma wasn't coming home so they started renovating her home. The tore up a few walls, tore down one and some were in the process of being torn down. I don't remember why they left but they had left this lady's beautiful home in a mess. It was terrible to discover. It's since then been repaired but man, why do some people think they have more than they do in these situations? For context, this family didn't even have to pay for utilities, just small rent fees. That's it.

No babysitter? I helped. Fell homeless. I helped. To say the least. She got a man and came at me with the " I'm in a relationship, and have kids. I should hang with people who are in relationships. People who have kids and can do couples things and family things. Her relationship fell apart. Guess who she called? Yea. No. Go get one of your friends in a relationship to take you and your kids in or give you rides and do favors for you. Unfortunately the oldest son died and she abandoned the second kid.

@beatrizmedeirosnoleto9391 Really, it's sad. She did some stupid shit now that I look back. Last I knew, she moved in with her mom and met some guy online that was in prison....living in a gated community. Get it. She was talking about how wonderful this guy was, and she was gonna marry him. I said to her, "Why don't you wait until he gets out, travel back and forth from his state to ours for visits, introduce the kids to him to see how they get along first before you marry him. When I tell you, she all but cussed me out. "HOW DON'T I KNOW THAT!?! HOW DON'T I KNOW THAT?! Him and the kids talk on the phone! They like each other! They're excited to have a dad!!" On and on. She married him ONE WEEK after he got out of prison. She met him face to face on a Friday and married him that same Saturday. Paid for the wedding out of her welfare money. Talkin bout "HE better give me a daughter or he's fired!" I got an invitation to the wedding, but didn't go. I'm friends with her brother. Well...5 mos after they were married, her brother moved back to the state of California. He was staying at their moms house until he got a place of his own. He asked me to come visit. Her youngest son was 6 or 7 at the time. I hadn't seen him since he'd started walking. My friend brought the boy to me. He remembered me, too. The left side of his head was baby ass smooth. The rest of his hair was in patches! I asked. "WHAT HAPPENED?!?" All the uncle would say to me was "Abuse." NOBODY would tell me what this man had done to this boy! She came out the back of the house, saw me, and started laughing. Talkin bout "Girl I had to fire that nigga." I just looked at her. She had been diagnosed chemically imbalanced. The oldest son died at 18 like his dad. Hit by a train. She met some guy on a bus who was fresh out of prison. Took $5k from their mom, stole half a pound of some smoke from her brother (a friend gifted it to him when he moved back), and took the youngest son in the middle of the night on greyhound with this dang felon to another state. Now, she and the youngest son have no relationship, and nobody knows where she is. They boy asked his uncle (my friend), "Is my mom crazy?" I have no idea what that boy saw. He's in Vegas feeling unloved. It's crazy. My friend and his mother told that boy if he wanted to live with one of them he could. He braves it on his own. That's a long story short.

I had a similar scenario: a friend got red pilled, shortly after marriage, (understandable), but he turned so paranoid and hostile that he pushed all of his single and non-child bearing friends away. The fallout occurred when he didn't want a couple around because they were "worldly" and child free. The couple found out, and the lady tried taking her life. They had 4 early stage pregnancies fail within the last three years. They told no one. The husband came to confront the friend for shaming his wife and the friend said to the husband, "that's what you get for harboring sin in your life." The man never said another word. Just left. A few days later it was found out that she tried to commit suicide. Our red pill christian domionist loudly proclaimed that they were living in sin and that this was the 4th miscarriage. The guy was cut off immediately. Cursed, blocked, and couldn't figure out why no one didn't want anything to do with him. We comforted our friends who miscarried.

I chose not to have children and focused on my education and career. I built the life I wanted and I’ve had to put folks out of my house that were supposed to be there temporarily. Inevitably, the stay lasted well beyond the “getting their life together” and they tried to turn it into a permanent situation. I’ve had to put the last 2 folks in need on their feet and out of my house. I worked really hard to meet some major milestones in my life and I don’t feel guilty for not allowing anyone else to play house in my house with the family they created. It’s insane to ask relatives or friends for a short stay only to try to turn it into a permanent living situation. I won’t do it again, it’s too stressful and not worth spoiling the relationship.

People like this Dave person are burdens. Also... having a broken water heater doesn't mean he gets to move his whole family in for a couple of days. They could have just used the bathroom and returned to their house. He just wanted a new house at op's expense.
Squatter rights shouldn't even be a thing. A lady lost her house for 2 years because some lunatic moved in while she was temporarily overseas helping family. Imagine coming back to find out you lost your house because of some stranger breaking in and just staying there.

I am a mother of 2. Don't let people use their kids to use you. People will use their kids to pull on your heartstrings and try to manipulate you into doing things that you would not have done if it wasn't for the children.

Facts ! My brother did this to our mom to convince her to disinherit me since I don’t have kids and my mother gave in.

A friend once made the mistake of letting his borderline estranged younger brother and his family come stay for a while, while they were "between homes". The younger brother had been a mess his whole life. Not criminality, just laziness and entitlement.
My friend had heard from other people that his brother had started fixing his life up when he became a father, so he decided to let him move in for a little while. At first the brother and his family were fairly well-behaved and didn't cause any major trouble. It was originally supposed to only be a few days, then turned into a couple weeks, and before you know it more than a month had passed.
At that point, when more than 30 days had passed, by state law the brother and his family were considered residents and they couldn't be forced to leave anymore, without an official eviction. And that's when they stopped to even try to behave. They trashed the house (they didn't damage anything, but they trashed it through neglect and never cleaning up after themselves).
It was 100% deliberate and planned. They behaved for long enough to get tenant's rights after 30 days, then they stopped caring, stopped trying, and just did whatever they wanted. My friend had to go through an official eviction process, which was made even more difficult because of the young children his brother and his wife had. It took almost three months to get them out, and it cost a lot of money to file and then enforce the actual eviction.
The brother laughed when he finally left, escorted by police. He won. He and his family got to live for free in a nice house with all the amenities for a total of four months, and then they got to leave without cleaning up after themselves. A few things from the house went missing too after they left, almost certainly taken by the brother/wife/kids, but it was impossible to prove.
Never let anyone stay in your house for an extended period of time unless you trust them completely and absolutely, or unless the local laws where you live doesn't grant the guests tenant's rights after a certain amount of time.

If someone can afford the medical bills for having a baby, then they shouldn't. Your kids shouldn't suffer for your poor money management

it was the father's responsibility to not piss off allies. pissing off allies and then coming into an emergency when you may potentially need said allies, that is just being a failure as a parent. Not only is it not your responsibility to not take care of kids that aren't yours, it can be argued that it is your responsibility to society to actively not help someone that spurns their allies especially if it means the suffering or death of the offspring. basic darwinism. those unfit should not survive. spurning allies makes one unfit.

A well-stocked pantry is a God send. it helps you even out financial ups and downs. Water heater broke down and money's going to ne short? Cut back on huying groceries and use the pantry to make up the shortage. Got a little extra money? Restock the pantry.

I'm only a minute in and this boggles me. I don't have kids and for various reasons don't plan to have any, I'm single, but I'm Auntie to my bff's kids and we're family. I love their kids, but not 24/7/365. That's a lot of work, and screaming... I've already warned them that I'm going to really need support when my dad dies, and we don't know if it's months, or years, but I know that they will be there for me. I already feel so bad for OP...

Since when does not having hot water quantify as an emergency!? Take a cold shower... you'll still get clean.
I consider myself to be a wimp, but I can't imagine how soft of a life you must have lived to try and pull this stunt! O^O
EDIT: Ohhh, it's a scam. Yup. XD

His children and family are not her responsibility. Her cats are her responsibility. The audacity and entitlement. He better for buy some thermal pjs, socks and electric blankets to stay warm. That water heater is a personal problem. He doesn’t want to pay for it and wants to bully her and I’m glad she didn’t let them come stay as it turned out to be a bogus story to begin with.
