      @chrisjohannes179 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nick Paul Sometimes I think all of this just gets in the pitcher's head and instead of getting in a rhythm, he is over-thinking -- literally the worst thing a pitcher should be doing. Just have the catcher giving signs with an initiate/indicator and confirmation sign... This is why sometimes three football coaches will give offensive/defensive calls (not so much in the NFL because each team has one player on the field with an audio receiver.) Similar to how third-base coaches give signs.
      Bumping the pitch could also be hard to decipher: 2 fastball, 3 offspead, 4 other fastball/slider, 1 changeup/other special pitch. Just keep it easy for a pitcher to stay in rhythm.

Giants, Astros, Red Sox, Mets, Phillies, Brewers. How Atlanta and Cardinals were supposed to win their divisions. Cubs and Nats sold their championship team. I remember a clip of Jake Peavy pitching for the Giants a few years ago. He was a veteran at the end of his career, known for being "intense" on the mound, and his catcher was an emergency rookie callup (at least one of the regulars was injured, maybe both).
    He got so exasperated with the rookie not calling the right pitch that finally he just yelled it to him.

      I recall that, prior to Buster Posey, the Giants had a game where BOTH of their catchers had to come out of the game due to injury, so Pedro Feliz, normally at third or moved to left when Bonds wasn't playing, strapped on the gear and caught a few innings. Supposedly Pedro had some experience as a kid behind the plate, so he wasn't completely lost.

    My team used a cool sign method. Catcher lays first sign and then you add 1 for every sign he shows after that. Say I throw 3 pitches: 1 = fastball, 2 = curve, 3 = change. Catcher flashes 2, 2, 2. The pitch is fastball. Start at 2, then there are 2 more signs shown. So go from 2 to 3 and start back over at 1. So simple, but so hard to crack.

      Catcher: ok I want him to throw a curve ball, I’ll show 4 signs, and he has to land on 2, which means I need to start on, ummm, hm, let’s see here, if I start on 1, thats 2,3,1, ok that’s not it, that means I need to start 2, ok so my sequence will be 2,3,1,1. Fascinating breakdown of not just the cerebral "game within the game" stuff, but also the way pitchers and catchers communicate. I had never noticed how complex those systems of signalling pitches are, you really have to respect all the work catchers must have to put in to master that part of the game. Great stuff.

    When I played in college we did “follow the 1 mod 5” which was after the 1, you add up the next numbers until you get 5, and then the next number is the pitch. It was so complicated we had many cross ups, and pitchers doing math on the mound instead of focusing on pitching, so I think it did way more harm than good. Glad I was a position player because I’m not sure I could have done mental math on the mound haha.

      I agree. Im personally not a huge baseball fan, but the non verbal communication that they do is slick. The pressure of being a pitcher is nuts and if you let someone in your head it would be so easy to come unraveled trying to throw a ball in various ways accurately and often as hard as they can. Then as a batter to swing I image you have maybe a 1/2 second or so to commit to it and/or stay unflinching if the pitcher buzzes you. Ive never batted at anything like that can the batter read the deliveries as they throw?

    I attended a Padre game back in the late '70s in which Randy Jones threw a complete came in 92 minutes. In the modern game, one inning can take 40 minutes. 4-hour baseball games with most of the MLB team batting averages below .230 and billion strikeouts has made the game unwatchable

      really because there was a sub 1 hour game not even that long ago. Get your golden age fallacy crap outta here lol. Also one inning taking 40 minutes is extremely rare, that hasn't happened in like 20 years

      @@YourHeroA Football and basketball games on TV take ad breaks, not baseball. Baseball doesn't need to provide ad breaks it's inherently built into the game with inning changeovers and bringing in a new pitcher. Thanks for posting the average times. Royals and Rangers played a game last year 4 hours 26 min for 9 innings that's an average of 30 minutes an inning.
