Jomboy has me scared to ever get seats behind the plate. I would hate to be immortalized on a breakdown failing to eat popcorn or something like that
Speak for yourself that’s a dream
@@kookmissile69 facts, I’d be like look mom I’m on jomboy lmao
Nah that's my goal for every MLB game I attend
Nah I want the Jomboy smoke😤
Jimmy sees all fans , not just behind the plate
Not really the point of the video, but I'm 100% behind the Umpire's response when Gallo was arguing strike 3. "I heard you, now walk away" acknowledges the player's disagreement while giving him a fair warning to sit down before he gets tossed. Could have easily thrown him out on the spot, and I can think of several umpires who would have. And, kudos to Ump, he got the right call on two close outside corner pitches.
Yup. Actually Alfonso Marques is one of the few good umps out there. He was also cool not to throw him out.
I thought he tossed him when he threw the ball to the mound, but he didn’t😂 He definitely gave him a longer rope when he was arguing that call.
I don't understand this culture of disagreement with umpires. You do this in cricket; you get suspended and fined. I'm not American though and didn't grow up with baseball.
@@SouL1Jacker I think you just got it. If baseball really cracked down on it like you described with cricket, guys wouldn’t do it. Players/managers/umpires can get fined and suspended if their conduct is over the top, though.
@@SouL1Jacker I don't really know cricket well, but there is nothing similar to balls and strikes yes? Calling balls/strikes is a hard thing to do accurately and everyone knows this. Also there are lots of umpires well known for being bad at it. I think this leads to more disagreements in baseball, whereas in cricket I'm assuming there aren't nearly as many calls by umpires that can so easily be wrong.
I was there at the game in person. Yu Darvish did take warm-up pitches, which explains the "extra" pitches that the broadcasts accidentally listed
How was the popcorn
@@poltronafrau I’m doing keto so I just had 2 super dodger dogs with no buns
@@bartonallenlewis6012 rip kidney
@@bartonallenlewis6012 uhhh ok
That makes sense, the 2 extra cutters were listed as 70 and 71 mph which is way to slow to be a cutter. Pitchers normally throw warm up pitches about 3/4 full speed just to loosen up the arm
Its amazing how much more you see at a single at bat than the average person such as myself. Appreciate the layers to the game you are bringing to light!
Jomboy, more of these types of breakdowns. I'm a 20+ year baseball fan, but pitch sequencing and tendencies always elude me when I watch games. I love watching the breakdowns that you do of tunneling and especially these ones, where you breakdown the sequence but also Gallo's tendency to lay off outside. Excellent job!!!
Just keep watching and you'll start to pick up on it. It's like a really complex matrix, but will start making sense once you know what to look for.
What this guy said
Yes! I love these sequence breakdowns.
The more you follow baseball, like me for 40+ years, the more you understand. It also helps if your local broadcasters do the same as they should do to educate their audience. I was lucky enough I guess to have good broadcasters that explained this stuff at times. It rubs off on you. I remember many years ago at a minor league game, talking with a fan cheering the other team, I predicted exactly the kind of pitch and location that was going to be thrown, outside low and away, the hitter (on my team) will swing and miss for strike three. The guy must have thought who the heck is this Canadian who knows so much about baseball. To be fair, I was kind of lucky with that prediction but knowing the hitter, and the pitcher probably did too, I just thought, what would I throw if I was him?
Same. I'm more concerned with the result to focus on that.
Yu Darvish is a stand up guy, respect to him for checking up on the umpire and apologizing.
Dude struck out twice and still complained to the Ump... Ridiculous
Strike four, you’re out
Hey I’m a Yankee fan and I’m glad they got this Dude off the team. That’s all he did in New York just strike out
Yeah, I know. Dude, chill out. You got extra batting practice after you *should* have been out. Stfu.
It’s Joey Gallo, he complains and cries.
If you strike out in 50% of your at bats you probably shouldn't argue balls and strikes even if you are right.
I do so enjoy Jomboy's breakdowns, he adds an element to the game we otherwise do not see!
Yeah I agree. His observation with humor not only with the plays and players but with the fans as well is what attracts for sure.
Jomboy needs to be in the Hall of Fame.
Hall of Game. Jomboy makes the game better.
Jomboy needs their own hall of fame
2:40 was neither a foul ball or a “ball”. It was a strike because he swung and missed… Gallo got 4 strikes in this AB and still had the audacity to argue the last one. Padres get screwed over by shit like this all the time, it’s annoying.
That last game was pretty bad. Lot of missed calls for Padre pitchers.
For sure. I'm surprised that wasn't the subject of the breakdown.
So confused, why isn’t the pitch at 3:12 a strike as well…
@@spamerrific1 it probably would’ve been if Gallo got a hit or got on base. But since he struck out anyway, it didn’t affect anything other than there were a couple of extra pitches thrown
Gallo major crybaby
Love these breakdowns. They're full of everything. A slight injury that's walked off. Random fan things like missing her mouth, and a breakdown within the breakdown of the hitter tendencies
How about the fan reaching for the ball 20' away, lame.
Two pieces of technology used in Australian cricket are an IR camera known as hotspot that shows the slight warming as a ball hits the bat or glove and an audio feed known as snicko (mounted at stump level, about a metre from the bat), that gives a really sensitive reading of any noise as the ball passes the bat. Used for years, virtually faultless. Maybe MLB should watch one of your cricket breakdowns. One of the cool things about hotspot is the way it shows the exact spot on the bat for a pure clean hit
We ‘Murikens like our traditions.
@@nettles89 Yeah! You can keep that tech along with your scientifically superior metric system!
Sounds like a good idea. Good technology. Good benchmark for MLB to examine and perhaps adapt.
Sure beats those whistles getting blown in Japan everytime the ball is in play💯
@@nettles89 Good to see the classic America bad comments from the recyclers
"100% that's off!" Ahh, so you're one of *those* guys. Also complaining after getting a break earlier in the at-bat with that strike 3 being called a foul.
gallo does what gallo wants
It's Joey Gallo... There's a reason why he has the worst K% and Whiff% in baseball.
@@runningwithcat6195 hes not doing bad rn
@@yuy389 He is doing better than what he did with the Yankees, but he's still bad. Hovering around .200 BA with absolutely no productions, and just classical stats don't do him justice.
Gallo is hitting .169 BA and .633 OPS with runners in scoring position. With 2 outs and RISP, he's hitting .097 BA and .623 OPS. Late and close game situation, he's hitting .043 BA with .394 OPS, having 2 hits (both home runs) in 58 plate appearances.
Have the MLB suits ever watched a cricket game? They use infrared heat imaging science stuff to determine if the ball grazed a wicket, bat, or batsman on to close to tell situations. It sure would come in handy for foul tips, hit batter, or did the tag miss or not situations.
Definitely would help.
Hotspot (the infrared camera system) has also been augmented by RTS which uses directional microphones synced to the video feed to determine if there is a sound as the ball passes the bat. Together they're pretty good at getting the right decision.
Not much innovation going on in the MLB with Manfred as commissioner unfortunately
@@chuchaftw They are using automatic strike zones in AAA this season. At the Major League level Manfred isn't able to just unilaterally implement things like that. Any major rule changes have to be ironed out with the MLBPA and get their approval. Jomboy investor and podcast host Ian Happ is one of the members of the rules committee for the Players Association.
nahh MLB too broke.
Only Joey Gallo could strike out twice in the same at-bat.
Genius baseball for Machado to recognize the signs needed to be changed, could've been a breakdown on it's own
Machado is one of the smartest players in the infield, no doubt.
@@lousassle9387 For as much as he's hated, it can't be denied he's a great player.
@@SallyStangler I totally agree. I think more people should enjoy how much he's matured from the hothead everyone remembers

@@westcoaststacker569 that’s a nasty team lol bro is so analytical
I feel like when a pitch is that close, you can’t complain about that. That was just a sore loser thing to do.
Absolutely. He had better swing at that.
Its one of those things where in the moment it probably looked like it was more off to him than it was to us because baseball is that way sometimes.
@@bmac4 but it literally was over the plate so it’s a really bad look to say 100% it’s off when it was 100% on. I bet the ump watched the replay after the game and had a nice chuckle
@@terdfergeson23 My bet is Gallo looks at it as well and apologizes to him tomorrow. This isn't amateur baseball, he thought the umpire missed the call. In this case, the umpire was correct. However, a missed 3-2 count pitch is the most frustrating thing for a hitter at any level. It is the difference between a walk and a strikeout. For an amateur hitter, just keep playing. For a professional hitter a missed call is literally taking money out of their pocket in their next contract.
Edit: It also wasn't over the plate. That pitch was a perfect pitch that barely caught the black. It caught the EDGE of the plate. A pitch over the plate is on the white.
@@brianeleighton Apologizes?! No chance. It was a run of the mill baseball disagreement, nothing personal. The ump would certainly not be apologizing tomorrow if he was wrong.
Mad respect to Darvish. Theres a reason his teammates love him.
As a Cubs fan, I was bummed to see him get traded. He's a great pitcher.
And the reason is Yuuuuuu
THANK YOU JIMMY FOR ALL THAT YOU DO
I absolutely love these breakdowns. You find the most interesting shit to do them on as well. It's good to see that a journalist can report actual sports related content still. I no longer get my information from ESPN or anywhere else except for here on TH-cam
definitely , the attention the detail is second to none
Yes but jomboy only does like a few of these videos a week and many of them crowdsourced. He also fills up the video with crowd reactions which aren’t really good for a professional media (e.g. someone that is looking to keep their game credentials or broadcasting rights).
@@stephenbeck7222 at least it isn't fake bullshit. And it isn't like this dude can do a hundred of these a week, he has a family and other things to take care of. A lot of editing goes into this crap

Darvish looked good that game. I think it was a two-hitter over seven. Dodgers fan but it's good to see him to show some command. Always liked how he played.
He got his 3000th MLB strikeout that game what a career he’s had and continues to have
I watched his games when he was with the Cubs and he could be downright nasty with his pitches. Staying healthy was his main issue. The break on his pitches and then having a nasty fast ball are great when he has it going.
This is how you deal with an ump/player discussion. Too many umps would've followed Gallo and essentially goat him into getting ejected. Telling him "I heard you, now walk away" is almost perfect.
Really admire the great assortment of pitches Darvish has...love that curve ball.
Imagine eating and missing your mouth using your HAND and having your uncoordinated mistake immortalized on a jomboy vid
That 3rd strike pitch was NASTY holy crap
As a Yankees fan, I approve of him essentially striking out twice.
darvish look like he throwing some filthy cut fasbtalls
I'm really not a baseball fan or sports in general outside of frolf, but i watch your content because you make things fun. What I am very interested in is pitcher/ball dynamics and the physics behind ball manipulation. Its absolutely fascinating, and to see side by side pitches doing differsnt things is amazing. Cheers!
Unfortunately, cameras don't really do that justice. You really can't appreciate just how much a ball breaks or moves unless you are in the batters box. A knuckleball does not seem like anything other than a slow pitch from a standard camera angle. But if you are at bat, it looks like someone is using a joystick to control the ball. A curveball or sinker will be easier to see, but it is really hard to simulate what the hitter sees. Especially when a pitch looks like it is headed straight for your shoulder and suddenly yanks right over the middle of the plate. It really is amazing.
Missed that popcorn at the perfect time to get a jomboy breakdown
Jomboy does this like no other, so many things going on that would be lost on the average eye, but Jomboy breaks it down with accuracy and humor everytime. We are so lucky to have Jimmy do this.
This guy breaks down baseball better than anybody and makes it very entertaining to watch.
What does Jomboy mean when he says he “crossed him up”? 1:50
he meant the catcher was expecting low/mid inside and got mid/high outside so he crossed up the catcher
Sometimes there is miscommunication between the catchers signs and the pitcher reading the signs. So catcher drops signs for a curveball and pitcher may accidentally misread and throw a fastball, and there can be a 20-30mph difference between the two pitches and placement is different. So catcher gets crossed up, as in cross signals and possibly loses the ball behind him causing a runner to advance onto the next base. PitchCom is used a lot now which is a switch on the catchers knee or wrist typically that sends signals to the inside of a pitchers hat that lets him know the pitch. I assume it’s a vibration or it may be audio, im not sure. This eliminates the error in sign reading and also protects from the other team stealing signs. Hope this helps, stick with baseball it’s a great game and much strategy in it
the lip reading, the sepcuation, the roasting of the fans...awesome
Jomboys video breakdowns are one of my most highly anticipated things on TH-cam, and I watch a lot of TH-cam
The best part of these breakdowns is the pitching analysis. It's my favorite part
I know this isn't the main focus of the video, but I like the part when Darvish comes over to apologize for something that wasn't his fault and the ump pats him on the shoulder and waves it off as no big deal, because it wasn't. It's something any decent person on both sides would do but I like these little moments of sportsmanship when players and umps let their better selves take precedent in the heat of the moment.
You bring so much more depth to the game. This addict needs more. 😃😃😃
I love when I'm watching a game and I see a moment and I immediately think "This is definitely gonna be a breakdown." Love your content Jomboy I literally started watching baseball because of you and now I watch every other day. I even got tickets to see a game. The MLB better have you on payroll
And it's dope how you make me see things I wouldn't understand! So cool. Please announce a game someday lol
What game are you going to? I truly hope your 1st ever game isn't two scrub teams....for your sake
You might have the best channel on TH-cam man. You are super entertaining, keep it up!
Those extra cutters were in at 70 and 71 mph, had to be warm up pitches.
Love that JomBoys face was just floating on the bottom of the screen the entire time
As a Yankee fan, I can't believe that Gallo was utterly abysmal in NY... the fans and media destroyed him... we get rid of him and now he will get the last laugh when he gets a championship with the Dodgers. 🤦🏻♂️
I keep thinking, "why did they trade him??" 😅
The ump didn’t deserve his temper tantrum, that was a hell of a pitch
I'm with you brother, I can't believe how poorly the Yankees have played since the AS break. And don't forget about Montgomery, he hasn't lost since being foolishly traded to the Cardinals. It'll be him or Gallo that'll say, thanks for trading me to a winning team Brian. 🤦🏻♂️
What? He's been poor with the dodger too batting .190
Same with Jesse Chavez, elite with the Braves, so bad everywhere else that the Braves pick him right back up off waivers after trading him lol

When Darvish was with the Cubs, he had an inning where he started throwing harder than he ever had. He managed to throw his fastest pitch ever and managed to hit both the catcher and the ump.
Yu Darvish has even hit the batter, catcher and ump with a single pitch, the infamous triple kill
Love the breakdowns, do not miss his face showing up

Nice pitch that last one. Say that caught the corner for sure
1000% that was a perfect pitch, ump didn’t deserve the temper tantrum especially after getting dinged
Deepest of dives into this baseball moment. Thanks JB
Gallo should’ve used his practice swing on that last pitch
Coach Jomboy with the signal tipping, I love it.
To be fair to Gallo that last pitch was as dotted as you could get. Pretty nasty stuff from Darvish
To Dr. Jomboy, Regent Professor of Baseball:
Thank you for another amazing class!
That first foul ball was an absolute piss missile.
That’s all he does.Hits balls hard foul than strikes out or just smokes one directly into the shift. If Gallo played pre shift he could be an Adam Dunn type player
@ like 3:03 its zoomed in on the catchers sign hand, and it kinda lights up a bit brighter for a second, i thought it was maybe just jomboy editing, but then it happens again before the next pitch @ about 3:16, but this second time it wasnt zoomed in so much.. its further away, and you can still see his hand light up.. so with the camera being zoomed out more, it doesnt seem like it really makes any sense to edit that light onto his hand again before the second pitch, but it still lights up, so now im confused, was the first time an edit, were they both edits, or did his hand _actually_ just get brighter on its own somehow prior to both pitches?? anybody got any ideas on what that was? thanks in advance.
This video taught me Gallo doesn’t swing at strikes
Actually of 6 strikes thrown in this at bat. Counting fouls of course. Gallo Swung at 4/6. So like in school you clearly learned nothing.
Hey Jomboy could you do a breakdown on the blue jays vs oriole’s game on September the six, and the the bench brawl.
He’s not an all-time great and I’m not a Padres fan (I like them, but not fav team), but Yu Darvish is so fkn good and so enjoyable to watch. His pitches are mesmerizing. Would watch him pitch any time
Back in the 90s when I was a kid I use to love watching ESPNs Sportscenter every single morning cause not only was I obsessed with baseball, I was just as obsessed with all the anchors (I think thats what they were called) cracking hilarious jokes one after another! Anyways, long story short....you & your sense of humor should've been an anchor on it too! That would've been great!
I never really thought about it, but it’s kinda crazy to have a super high paying job, fly off the handle and get to clock out early. Umpiring has been terrible (relatively) recently in terms of conduct. But I wonder what it would be like if someone returned the beer I poured them, when I know for a fact it was the correct pour, and I just threw the glass on the floor, stormed off, and was paid my last six hours lol.
I like the pitch chart that you showed with the break info.....but it says the sliders and curves broke to the right and fb broke left? Are we watching in a mirror, or have I been mixing up my rights and lefts my whole life???
We need a Kyrgios and Karen tennis breakdown. It was intense, lots of broken rackets and cursing
Who notices someone missing their mouth with popcorn? You guys are next level.
Aw yes another Jomboy breakdown 😎
As someone who doesn’t watch or care much about baseball, I’m happy it’s baseball season again so I get jomboy videos
God I miss Darvish. Go cubs go
As a Padres fan it's always nice when I see he's starting.
I'm a Cubs fan and I know he had health issues, but that trade was terrible for the Cubs
@jomboy I can’t believe you made a blitzball reference 🤯😂 awesome
Those cutters were 70 mph, definitely warmups
@2:57 that "cutter away" looks like a floppy sinker, he calls it the flounder.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Gallo is a starter for the best team in baseball.
He's starting and hitting .197/.310/.426. Still sucks, just slightly less so than when with the Yankees.
Life’s fair ain’t it?
This made my day! Oh man public stonings must’ve been great back in the days of JC
When it was 1-2, I was shocked there was going to be "a lot of weird things about to happen" when obviously the only thing that could happen is a strikeout.
Good to see I was correct. He struck out twice. That's believable.
Why does the part at 3:05 make no sense to me? What am I missing? He swung at it. Why wasn't that strike 3?
Foul ball
Did Darvish throw his own pitch? The catcher got up out of his stance quick like a catcher would in case of a dirt ball off speed
Edit: Machado confirmed this
When
@@jesse8028 he threw a 97 mph fastball right into the umps chest b/c the catch was expecting curve/slider. That’s why Machado was kind of upset at Darvish. In SD they must switch sign sequences every AB and he didn’t switch from the last batter.
Keep it up these are always amazing
Weirdly the umps did a good job this time.
That 3rd strike call was insane because that pitch was amazing
They often do, we're just really really good at noticing the bad ones

Amen, right back atcha. God bless you.
2:42 looks like a ball? Didn’t the batter swing making that a strike?
So confused at 2:51. Bottom right says the count is 1-2. Jomboy says "1 and 2 is the count, the next pitch...that was like a cutter... away... ball." So the count should now be 2-2. But the the graphic on the bottom right never updates. It continues to say 1-2 all the way through the next pitch where the batter swings and appears to miss. So that should be strike 3 and batter out. But no he's still up there. Now maybe he fouled and I'm just missing it. But in any case, the weird thing is that whatever happened there, the count at the bottom right gets updated to 2-2. But this should have happened the previous pitch.
this reminds me of the Argentinian Hollow Swallow mating with C-Beams atop a volcano at Tannhäuser Gate as attacks ships glitter afire off the shoulder of Orion
😄 Gallo should be thankful on that one
jimmy could you please do the orioles blue jays game earlier tonight, there was a lot of dumb calls, lip-reading opportunities and general headassery
I like the added two pitches - wonder if that would ever happen with an automated strike zone system?
Also - good ex here where Gallo thinks it’s a ball on strike 3 and the zone shows a strike. These aren’t usually highlighted like the reverse but serves as a reminder that hitters don’t have perfect strike zone recognition either and an automated zone isn’t automatically benefitting them. It’ll likely involve more strategy to get hitters to shift their perceived zone like we saw here.
Good breakdown Jomboy! You’re right, there was a lot of stuff going on there!
Whats with the 3rd out ticker for this broadcast. lol does it just light up real quick or flash?
This breakdown had everything.
Is that pitch diagram at the end wrong? It looks like it has the called strike at the end in green ... as a foul ball.
