  • I got my wrecker stuck! I guess I jinxed myself when I said I never had to chain up my outside tires after installing the @onspotnorthamerica22 automatic tire chains..
    We headed up the mountain during a blizzard to winch out a couple of stuck trucks. The first one was a loaded set of doubles spun out and slid into the snow bank. I had to winch, move forward, winch again, and repeat a for about a hundred yards and the @zackliftinternational4841 never hesitated! I finally got to the point where I would drag him up the mountain with the two trucks. After that we headed down to get another set of doubles, and being empty I thought I would just be able to drag him without winching. That was a huge mistake and caused me to slide to the inside of the turn and get stuck as well. I had Ethan try to pull me out, but he got stuck as well.
    ODOT stopped bu in their Autocar plow truck and were able to pull me out with my @YankumRopes, then I was able to get back to work and pull both trucks out.

    That’s a 7/8” 28,500lb rope doing the job of a 1-1/2” 74,000lb rope!!

      What is the Working Load Limit (WLL) on those 7/8" ropes. Also what is the WLL on the 1.5" 74,000 rope.

      @@cclngthr we recommend a FOS of between 4 and 5 much less than 4 and it’s too stretchy and risk damaging the rope or total failure and anything above a 5 the rope will not offer the stretch required to be a good kinetic ropes that being said on a 7/8” 28,500lb MBS you have a recommended WLL between 7,125 and 5,700 lbs at a 5mph running start pull your kinetic energy becomes almost equivalent to the static resting weight of your recovery vehicle.

    The UPS folks you were dealing with over the phone are typical of folks in an office that are trying to meet time constraints and don't care about the conditions out on the road. I have worked with folks like that and they are arrogant and demanding and are thinking only of themselves. Good on the UPS driver for being careful and helpful. Having Ethan helping out in many ways and with the camera has truly enhanced this channel.

      I as a manager only dealt with UPS when a customer said they want us to use them and they paid for the transport.

      If you understand how UPS works you'll know a great deal. UPS fines it's customers for holding up time schedules, they are so vane I wouldn't be surprised for them to send Casey a bill instead of the other way around.

    Perfect example of why the old school halogen warning lights work for you. Halogen bulbs build heat in the housings and help keep the lenses clear of snow. LED's don't build as much heat and tend to get covered while operating. Great job on the tow's

      I remember getting home after lousy drive in heavy snow and slushy areas. Looked at the headlights and the only part that didn't have an inch of ice on it was the centre of the lens due to the heat from the bulbs. LED's are great but not in winter conditions with lots of road spray of all sorts.

    One advantages of having halogen lamps in the rotating beacons (as opposed to putting non strobing LEDs in) is that they're much more likely to melt the snow that can build up!

      This is the exact reason I won't switch to led head lights. I know my lights will never fit snow covered, at least the ones I'm running now. I've had halogen head lights even get snow covered before, I couldn't imagine led. Not common though, but I've been out in white outs and blizzards. I don't know why I just don't stay home.

    When I’m running plow truck I’ll almost always stop and pull out another plow or working truck like Casey’s. Mostly because, like Casey, they already have a strap connected and are ready to go. The civic with no chains and no plan? They made a choice.

    Rod and Gun is a tricky corner for sure. Chains sometimes are useless on this corner. I can tell you how many wrecks I have work on Hogg Rock over the years.

      Yeah that’s a terrible place to be working in the snow. That’s why we left the pickup hooked up for the pull the top. I wanted to make damn sure we made it without spinning out again until we were out of there

      I have seen more wreaks on that corner than anywhere else on the pass. It’s always shaded so it can be icy even when the rest of the drive is clear.

    I worked for WSDOT on White Pass in the 80’s we tested on spot chains on one of our plow trucks. They were a help but for what we were doing regular chains were better. I noticed the ODOT truck that gave you a pull had German chains on. The nice thing about them is you are always on chain due to the diamond pattern. They are also case hardened so they last a lot longer. You can wear halfway through the links then turn them over and use the other side. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.

    I know some are not bothered at being out in shorts in the winter but consider getting stuck outside not to mention windchill on skin can frost bite fast. I am glad the plow truck helped. I don't think they stop here even after smashing something.

      Wearing shorts there ln the winter is beyond stupid I'd say unless he has more clothes in his truck.
      He's essentially climbing a mountain and if his truck fails and his night heater it's going to be next stop hypothermia.

      Plow truck drivers do take care of tow truck drivers, the tow trucks get things out of the way, making the plow truck drivers jobs easier.

      ​@asddddddd6821 this driver was in a daycab, so likely an in town driver not going more than 300mi. I'd hope he had some more clothes in the cab tho. It's one thing as long as the engine runs and you got heat. She dies, and you become a driver-sicle pretty quick!

      Being a service Bratt and my father a Airforce person in charge of the motorpool. He had big azz Oshkosh rigs with huge plows and blowers to keep the flight line cleared. 😮

    Casey as a wife of a UPS driver thank you for telling whoever was on the phone off, unfortunately though it doesn't matter I'm positive that they will somehow try to blame the driver on ending up in the ditch. Not the conditions or the fact that they sent the driver out in it

      @@permaquilter9111 I don't work for UPS but the same BS takes place at other companies. Our best dispatchers were drivers first. The companies are slow to put good drivers in dispatch because then they are short a good driver.

    What's with all the doubles? Crazy video and you guys are awesome! As a former first responder for a utility company I have been in those extreme conditions where one step forward matched with two steps backward is going to happen alot! Great job Casey and Ethan.

      The LTL doubles, the two he pulled out, are typically too light to have great traction. the double that passed them tarped looked like lumber and probably was max gross weight, so great traction

      They're too light on the drive axles (or axle) with enough weight behind them to make it really easy to spin. I used to haul wood chips, sawdust, and construction demo in 53 foot possum belly chip trailers at 105,500. We're allowed 42,500 pounds on the drives and drop axle combined. But when the weather gets bad that drop axle comes up and disperses almost 10,000 pounds of weight to the steer and drives. 15 thousand on a steer and 38-40 thousand on drives makes for great traction.

    Im outside digging mud out of post holes for work today and its snowing. Huge props to Ethan and you casey.
    As a concrete worker, butcher, and now a framer you have to have a hard boss side. You were strict to the point but still respectful as you could.
    I know ethan was freezing his nutz off but awesome job bringing us this video.
    I also 100% respect that safety in an emergency or weather conditions are a much bigger priority than logged hours. Im willing to bet that even the sheriff's department will make you pull off even if you have maxed hours for the day. Pray for more safe recoveries.

    Hey Casey !! As NOT enough to get the "UPS" unit to the top, but have to drop the driveshaft & pull it to town !!! With the other unit ,, have to get down & free the brakes too !! Then get ALL stuck in the snow !!! WOW !! What a day to ""PLAY "" in the snow !! Good that "GRUMPY" wasn't with you too !! 🙃😉😊👍👍👍👍👍

    Nicely done Casey. It just shows that things don’t always go according to plan and you have to adapt to the new situation. Heavy snow like that standard tire chains are better. Kudos to the drivers you pulled out. To chain before being told to (although they got stuck) knowing they typically struggle to make the pass.

    great video Casey/Ethan , those are crazy conditions, dispatch Mgrs are people who are control freaks and don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, less than 5% are good people and know the job, i have dealt with my share over the years, Ethan did an awesome job filming, we just went through a bit of a cold spell hitting almost -25 here in the prairies , now heavy snowfall warning for the next 24 hours and then a deep freeze again come Friday night down to near -30 , gotta love prairie life truckers that don't chain up are accidents waiting to happen and the fine should be $2000 not $1000, keep them in check 👍

    I started as an apprentice mechanic in 1979 up in northeastern Ontario Canada on Heavy Equipment , Truck / Coach . Watching these vids sure brings back some memories . Towing and service calls in the winter can sure have their moments .

    Easy to tell you how to do your job from the safety of an office! "Just tow him down" sounds easy enough from your office in sunny Florida, but out in the real world in the middle of a blizzard it is actually an awful idea... always take the advice from professionals on site who have eyes on the situation and actually understand and have to deal with the risks involved.

    When I worked wrecker recovery, back in 70's-80's we used 3 railer chains; dang they were heavy. "Don't go in the ditch," great advice. LOL

      I'm due west of where it was working and down in the rain. This was a beast of a storm, it absolutely poured and blew all day. I ended up with 1.9" of rain in one day. That's about 2 feet of snow.

      Drove in crappy conditions yesterday, by the time I got home we'd had very little snow here . . . then it started to rain and by this morning there was no snow left. Had to go back where I'd been yesterday and pretty well all of their snow was gone too . . temp was sitting at +4 C/40 F.

    Thank you, Casey and Ethan you all show just how bad it, can be. The shots that Ethan took it is like one smooth video without seeming chopped up. You are now a team with Ethan there and he is an asset to your business. Casey you are not afraid to ask for help when needed and then to help out the UPS driver that is awesome. Cannot say too much for the dispatcher but there is a karma out here for them. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

    Been up that mountain many times. It gets pretty bad up there at times. Have hauled many trucks off of it also. Gotta love the big company drivers that refuse to Chain running super singles. They are special. Lol. Great job to the drivers that chained up.

    Holy heck those conditions seem super gnarly! I've been in some serious blizzard conditions here in Finland, but nothing like that. Seems the weather is just below freezing, since the snow seems to be sticking to every and all surfaces.
    That's when the snow and/or ice is the most slippery. Minus 2C (28F) is way way, way more slippery than say minus 10C (14F). And at least in the mid/southern parts of Fin there is not even CLOSE to those kinds of elevation changes.
    Even if your visibility is zilch from the snowfall, and the highway has so much snow that here and there it blows over your hood and windscreen, I'd take that in -10C anyday over less snow and -2C. Even if our law requires winter tires on the winter months and every sensible person uses them.

      They nickname the snow "Cascade Concrete". It will come down sopping wet, and then when the storm is over it will drop to a deep freeze. It is in between snow and ice. Even with a metal blade plow, they can't get it off the roads.

      Up in my part of northern Canada there's good traction at -25 to -45 C . The snow gets nice and dry then . Side note : My grandparents came from Finland to Canada in 1908 . We might be related , LOL

      @@robertrosicki9290 When people move here from the upper plains, there are plenty of them who have more confidence than brains.
      We have two significant differences: 1) Something called hills. On the ice when it is flat isn't the same as trying to go up a hill, only to lose it and slide backwards with little control. 2) We don't get deep freezes. We get wet snow and ice. And the absolute worst - we'll get rain over ice. When everything is covered in ice with a layer of water on top, all texture of the ice goes away and it is absolutely smooth. Any salt goes away. You can't even stand up.
      I've known many over the years who are mouthy about how the locals "don't know how to drive in the snow" to only have them quite humble after their over-confidence results in an expensive bad experience.

    The more I watch the more I’m impressed with your choice of equipment! When I first saw it I was surprised as I had not seen anything like it before! From the first time I watched you I was impressed with your work ethics and your ability. Thanks for taking us along. P.S.     If I need to I use spades on the highway. I try to be gentle but in winter conditions gotta do what ya gotta do. I had to yank a bus out of the ditch couple days ago and it wanted to pull me into the ditch with it lol.
    Potholes suck. But kinda a cost of doing business for a roadway.

      I hear you say at one time "hours of service in these conditions don't matter". So very true and the law makes exceptions in situations like this.
      Good on Ya Casey to tell that dispatcher where he could go!
